ClubFloyd Transcript:
Return to the Stars by Adrian Welcker
As played on ifMUD on July 18, 2021

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Return to the Stars written by Adrian Welcker. Return to the Stars was released as part of the 2021 ParserComp, in which it took 11th place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing these games, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played these games, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Jacqueline asks, "So, people okay with Return to the Stars, then?"
Knight_Otu says, "Sure, sounds good."
MoyTravis says, "Mrmyep."

CF |
CF | With his back against the proverbial wall, your commander ordered a
CF | somewhat daring raid on a Shwabolian outpost to break out of the
CF | strategic stalemate. Naturally, things didn't quite go as planned.
CF | Several members of your platoon were killed, and you were separated,
CF | captured, sedated, and taken to this prison... somewhere.
CF |
CF | Initially, you settled into a sort of routine: sleep, shower, eat,
CF | reconsider your life choices, the occasional questioning impeded by
CF | language barriers, and back to sleep again. But it has been three days
CF | since your captors last fed you – or given you any attention, really.
CF | If you are to leave this planet alive, you better find a way before
CF | you starve...

CF | Your Cell
CF | This is the room you have spent most of your time in, ever since being
CF | taken captive. To be honest, you've kind of lost track of how long
CF | that has been. A cot stands in one corner of the room. An air duct
CF | covered by an old grate is mounted in the wall near the cot, exuding a
CF | constant stream of cool, fresh air (and the occasional drop of
CF | condensation, which falls to the ground with an annoyingly loud
CF | plink). A sanitary station – a sort of hybrid
CF | toilet-shower-sink – is built into a corner of the room. A metal door
CF | lies to the north, keeping you securely in the cell.
CF |
CF | On the cot are some neatly folded bedsheets.
CF |
CF | A small camera hangs above the cot, keeping a watchful eye on you.
CF |
CF | > DavidW says, "oh dear. Gore and violence was not what I was expecting at all."

CF | than you'd care for to verify that it does make for a passable

CF | claim to the test.
CF | You jump into the water, spreading your arms and legs to slow your
CF | descent...
CF | About ten seconds later, you come to an abrupt halt as you land
CF | faceplate-first in the silt at the bottom of the sea.

CF | > NOTES
CF |
CF | Thank you for playing "Return to the Stars"!
CF |
CF | The general premise of needing to escape from captivity on an alien
CF | world occurred to me in early 2018, but as things often go in life, I
CF | was busy with other projects, so the idea was set aside and mostly
CF | forgotten about. The announcement of ParserComp 2021 brought the
CF | concept back to my mind, I reduced the scope somewhat, and in April
CF | '21 I finally sat down and started working on the implementation in
CF | earnest – partially out of sheer boredom, some five months into
CF | Germany's second COVID lockdown. Its release marks the first time I
CF | actually finish and publish a piece of IF.
CF |
CF | With the minor history lesson out of the way, it is time for some
CF | acknowledgements. While it is often said in writing circles that
CF | "everything has been done before", and that it's all about the
CF | individual author's take on a certain concept, I think it is only fair
CF | for me to acknowledge the major source of inspiration for "Return":
CF | Marko Kloos' Frontlines novel series. (And probably half a
CF | dozen others, subconsciously, but that's usually the one that comes to
CF | my mind when I think "military SF". I highly recommend it.) As such,
CF | the appearance of certain names or phrases, such as space-borne
CF | infantry, is no coincidence. (Rest assured, however, that this is
CF | not just a barely-concealed fanficion.)
CF | And, last but not least, a huge THANK YOU to my playtesters, who
CF | helped catch a number of larger and smaller issues in the game: Lucas
CF | Beringer, Erik Schwejda, Edo, and Peter M.J. Gross.
CF |
CF | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, QUIT, or read some
CF | author's NOTES about this story?

Jacqueline says, "Well, thanks everyone."
