ClubFloyd Transcript:
Foreign Soil by Olaf Nowacki
Navigatio by P. James Garrett
As played on ifMUD on August 16, 2020

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Foreign Soil written by Olaf Nowacki, and Navigatio written by P. James Garrett. Both of these games were released as part of the 2020 IntroComp. Navigatio took third place, and Foreign Soil received an Honorable Mention. You can learn more about the games, including how to download them, by visiting the IFDB pages: Navigatio, and Foreign Soil.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing these games, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played these games, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF |
CF | Puffing and roaring, the ship slowly touched down on the orange sand.
CF | Then the engines died, it became quiet again and only the sand under
CF | the engines, which had melted into glass, still bubbled and smoked.
CF | Inside the caravel were cool dark passages with small lights here and
CF | there, and the ship's distributed processors eventually found the
CF | conditions were met to wake a pilgrim.
CF |
CF | The displays on the pilgrim's sarcophagus began to light up and showed
CF | measured values from the sensors inside. Nobody was there to read
CF | them anyway. The cervix at the bottom of the sarcophagus opened and
CF | the escaping liquid disappeared bubbling and gurgling in the drain
CF | below. The cervix opened further and further, the body of the pilgrim
CF | behind it slowly sank down and finally sliped out on the floor in
CF | front of the sarcophagus, feet first. The limp, wet body seemed
CF | lifeless, but then it began to twitch, choke and cough. The pilgrim
CF | gasped and eventually she raised her torso and leaned on her shaky
CF | arms.

CF | Undefinable blurry brown
CF | You are coughing and gasping for breath, struggling to keep your torso
CF | upright. Your mind is foggy and your sense of balance is so confused
CF | that it feels like you are falling all the time.
CF |
CF | You can hardly see anything around you, everything just looks blurry
CF | brown.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x me"
CF ] Undefinable blurry brown
CF | >
CF | > X ME
CF |
CF | You feel dizzy, cold and naked.
CF |
CF | You feel the nausea rise in you and without being able to do anything
CF | about it you vomit your stomach contents onto the floor. In addition
CF | to all the unpleasant sensations, there is now the bitter and sour
CF | taste in your mouth. But at least your sense of balance is gradually
CF | normalizing.
CF |
CF | > Roger says, "oww my torso"
Jacqueline says (to ClubFloyd), "i"
CF ] Undefinable blurry brown
CF | >
CF | > I
CF |
CF | You are carrying nothing.
CF |
CF | Slowly, really, very slowly, your vision improves a little. In the
CF | brown mass in front of you there appears to be a bright, pulsating
CF | spot.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x spot"
CF ] Undefinable blurry brown
CF | >
CF | > X SPOT
CF |
CF | Your hand gropes for the shining spot and feels a smooth, firm
CF | surface. With the touch of your fingers, a pale, seemingly old memory
CF | comes back: Under the pulsating spot there must be something good,
CF | important.
CF |
CF | Another sensation suddenly comes to your mind: cold. Your wet skin,
CF | goose bumps and the shivering fit that runs through your body in
CF | recurring waves.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "look under spot"
CF ] Undefinable blurry brown
CF | >
CF | > LOOK UNDER SPOT
CF |
CF | Your hand moves to the edge and pushes it up. The pulsating light
CF | folds up and your hand gropes down into the hollow below. There is
CF | something in it, something that is rough and soft at the same time ...
CF |

CF |
CF | You take the rough and soft thing out of the hollow and pull it
CF | towards you. Your mind is still sluggish and cannot grasp what it is,
CF | but your body already seems to know and is pressing it against you.
CF |
CF | With both hands you press the thing into your face, against your nose
CF | and the thing exudes a familiar smell. It smells good, it smells
CF | fresh, it smells fresh ... fresh ... fresh laundry! It is a terry
CF | towel.

CF | acting on its own, holding the pen to your upper arm, and then
CF | pressing the button. You feel the sting, the burning in your arm and
CF | how the tingling immediately spreads all over your body. Your ears

CF | Inside the caravel were cool dark passages with small lights here and

CF | Frozen Northern Bank
CF | It is the third of a series of strange mornings. Lauds was late, but
CF | time has been misbehaving. So have the monks of this community. With
CF | Abbot Brandan missing now for three days, discipline is slipping.
CF | Chores go undone. The daily offices are in danger of blending into one
CF | another.
CF |
CF | You stand now upon the spit of land between the crumbling monastery
CF | wall and the river. The ground here is a disaster of rutted, frozen
CF | mud. This is a gray March, locked in ice after the tease of a late
CF | February thaw. There are no tracks or roads, but you can walk north
CF | back to the monastery. Lines of hedges--puzzles of bone-like sticks
CF | and thorns--render travel in other directions too exhausting to
CF | consider.
CF |
CF | Brother Tuan, your master, is standing by the river. He is looking
CF | toward the far bank. He does not seem to have noticed you.
CF |

CF |
CF | Brother Tuan is your master. You are his servant. It is important to
CF | say these things so plainly, because it is easy to forget these
CF | things. After all, he treats you as an equal, to the point that the
CF | other brothers regard you as a member of the order even though you
CF | have had no formal training as a monk. Tuan is tall and strong, as big
CF | as a bear. He is raucous with his laughter, stern in his admonishment,
CF | full in his passion. Were it not for his tonsure, or the wisdom with

CF |
CF | Diarmat is a short, portly brother who typically moves with a jerking,
CF | nervous energy. He sits at a scriptorium desk, scratching at a scrap
CF | of vellum with a quill with a fervor that is rare even for him. He
CF | mutters and shakes his head as if making errors. Sweat beads upon his
CF | bald head, trails down through his tonsure, and drips onto his
CF | shoulders . You wonder in the moment whether you should disturb him,

CF | spin in the round currach, which almost tips more times that you care
CF | to remember. But you made it across to the southern bank.
CF |
CF | Tuan stands in this new land as if he is an inhabitant, bracing
CF | against the wind and looking toward the slope.
CF |
CF | "We have crossed the river and we look for Abbot Brandan," he
CF | says.
CF |
CF | But you are not sure whom he is addressing. Is it you? Is it the
CF | land, or the ruins that sit in the basin beyond the ridge? Or is it a
CF | declaration in the face of time that you feel has begun to misbehave?
CF | It was morning a moment ago. Now, the sky darkens and it is evening.
CF | But it could not have taken you that long to cross the river.
CF |
CF | Yes, he declares the intention as if time has become misordered,
CF | and his delcaration is all that establishes what had come just before,
CF | and what is coming next.
CF |
CF | Chapter 2, and the rest of Navigatio ... coming soon!

DavidW says, "It has promise, yes."
DavidW says, "Some spellchecking would be nice."
DavidW says, "The writing is better than average, for sure."
MoyTW says, "Yeah. Very well-written but, like, clearly not edited much."
Knight_Otu says, "That was the weak point of the game, yeah."
benzene asks, "Did we 'about' this one?"
DavidW says, "I don't think so."

DavidW says, "Well, credits/about will come, I'm sure."
Jacqueline asks, "So... I guess for next week I should set us up for chatting with a screen share for some choice-based stuff?"
Jacqueline asks, "This is all the Floydable stuff, right?"
DavidW says, "That or we play non-intros."
DavidW says, "yeah, there were only three Floydable entries."
Knight_Otu says, "There was one executable, and the rest are all html-based, I believe."
Jacqueline nods.
Jacqueline says, "Okay. Well, see you all next week, then. Take care, and stay safe."
DavidW says, "thanks. You too."
MoyTW says, "See you all around."
MoyTW disappears through an invisible gap in the MUD. You think you may have heard the sounds of chatting before the gap closed again.

CF |
CF | "Tell me," he says.
CF |
CF | "Brandan took one of the currachs across the river. He crossed the

CF |
CF | "Well," Tuan says, sighing. "We must cross the river."
