ClubFloyd Transcript:
Homecoming by Carolyn VanEseltine
As played on ifMUD on August 11, 2019

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Homecoming written by Carolyn VanEseltine. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | In Planetary Orbit
Floyd | A pretty red star shines over the edge of the closest planet, painting
Floyd | all the clouds and land masses and things with a spectacular crimson
Floyd | hue.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "oh, this author. I like her."
Jacqueline says, "Same"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x planet"
Floyd ] In Planetary Orbit
Floyd |
Floyd | > X PLANET
Floyd |
Floyd | Which do you mean, the closest planet or the other planets?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
zarf arrives, full of fun, but no funk.
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x closest"
Floyd ] In Planetary Orbit
Floyd |
Floyd | > X CLOSEST
Floyd |
Floyd | It's a planet orbiting the pretty red star! One side looks hot and
Floyd | one side looks cold, and there are swirly clouds. You can't tell much
Floyd | else about it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says, "Yeah, she knows what she's doing."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x star"
Floyd ] In Planetary Orbit
Floyd |
Floyd | > X STAR
Floyd |
Floyd | It's pretty and red! You don't know much else about it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x other planets"
Floyd ] In Planetary Orbit
Floyd |
Floyd | > X OTHER PLANETS
Floyd |
Floyd | You can't use multiple objects with that verb.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd ] In Planetary Orbit
Floyd |
Floyd | > X ME
Floyd |
Floyd | You're in space.
Floyd |
Floyd | You have memory banks.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x banks"
Floyd ] In Planetary Orbit
Floyd |
Floyd | > X BANKS
Floyd |
Floyd | Examining the memory banks, you discover that you are the colony ship
Floyd | Vocation -
Floyd |
Floyd | Wait. That's a terrible, boring name. You can't stand it a moment
Floyd | longer and you must rename yourself immediately.
Floyd |
Floyd | What new name should you take?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni asks, "Clubfloyd?"
Jacqueline says, "Traditionally, we have answered -- yes"
Knight_Otu says, "Well that's the traditi... right."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "ClubFloyd"
Floyd ] In Planetary Orbit
Floyd |
Floyd | > CLUBFLOYD
Floyd |
Floyd | The colony ship Clubfloyd... it's got a certain ring. But
Floyd | does it have the right ring?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "YES"
Knight_Otu says, "Yes."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "yes"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > YES
Floyd |
Floyd | Excellent! What a perfect name.
Floyd |
Floyd | Digging into the memory bank further, you break a mental bottle of
Floyd | champagne over your bow (it seems to be the thing to do under these
Floyd | circumstances) and learn a bit more about your situation.
Floyd |
Floyd | Hey, you have crew! That's an exciting discovery. You also have
Floyd | colonists - not as surprising, since you're a colony ship. And you
Floyd | have some damage to your systems and hull, which helps explain why
Floyd | everyone aboard is in cryogenic sleep.
Floyd |
Floyd | in fact, it explains why you're alive at all. Venture-class ships
Floyd | operate in high FTL under human control, but they carry backup AIs in
Floyd | case of catastrophe. According to the logs, the colonists and crew
Floyd | activated their backup AI and entered cryosleep approximately 36 hours
Floyd | ago.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your mission, should you choose to accept it (ooh, more shiny bits in
Floyd | the memory bank!) is to return everyone safely to Earth.
Floyd |
Floyd | Maybe it's time to get on that.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni nods.
Guenni says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > L
Floyd |
Floyd | Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd | A pretty red star shines over the edge of Gliese 581 G, painting all
Floyd | the clouds and land masses and things with a spectacular crimson hue.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "Oops, broke a mast, better go back."
Knight_Otu says, "(Okay, this is severe.)"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x banks"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X BANKS
Floyd |
Floyd | Examining the memory banks, you confirm that you are the colony ship
Floyd | Clubfloyd. You're carrying some 500 colonists and 30 crew
Floyd | back to Earth after an asteroid impact interrupted the colonization
Floyd | mission and damaged the hull and other systems.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x hull"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X HULL
Floyd |
Floyd | Your hull is scorched, and some of your sections are depressurized,
Floyd | including the cockpit, the medical bay, and several unimportant
Floyd | corridors. However, the cryosystems are in good shape, so you're not
Floyd | at risk of losing any colonists or crew, and the cargo bays are also
Floyd | nicely pressurized, in case you encounter anything interesting on the
Floyd | way to Earth.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x crew"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X CREW
Floyd |
Floyd | 30 crew members are in cryosleep.
Floyd | 0 crew members are awake.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
wordsmith says, "'Gliese 581 is a star of spectral type M3V at the center of the Gliese 581 planetary system, about 20 light years away from Earth in the Libra constellation. Its estimated mass is about a third of that of the Sun, and it is the 89th closest known star to the Sun.'""
wordsmith says, "(quoting from Wikipedia)"
Guenni says, "Ah."
Knight_Otu nods.
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x systems"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X SYSTEMS
Floyd |
Floyd | (the systems damage)
Floyd | After a quick diagnostic, you confirm significant damage to your high
Floyd | FTL drive, general life support systems, external sensor grid, and
Floyd | logic circuits, plus lesser damage to the low FTL drive and
Floyd | communication web. Interesting.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to wordsmith), "Damn. I was hoping you were just saying all that off the top of your head."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x web"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X WEB
Floyd |
Floyd | There's no one to talk with out here, so the communications web damage
Floyd | doesn't matter too much.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "High and low FTL drives. Interesting."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x low drive"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X LOW DRIVE
Floyd |
Floyd | A properly functioning low FTL drive allows a ship to skip through the
Floyd | cosmos like a stone skipping across the water. (A quick query of your
Floyd | memory banks produces a rather unlikely image to go with this phrase.
Floyd | Rocks are denser than water, and therefore, rocks sink. This must be
Floyd | an analogy to comfort sprouting humans.)
Floyd |
Floyd | >
wordsmith says, "I *did* recognize the Gliese (star catalog) designation and figured it was probably real..."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x high drive"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X HIGH DRIVE
Floyd |
Floyd | A properly functioning high FTL drive is good for hopping from point A
Floyd | to point Z without worrying about all that pesky space in between.
Floyd | Your high FTL drive, by contrast, is all but entirely slagged. It
Floyd | might be good for roasting marshmallows.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to ws), "Nice"
Guenni says (to Floyd), "repair high drive"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > REPAIR HIGH DRIVE
Floyd |
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x planet"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X PLANET
Floyd |
Floyd | Which do you mean, Gliese 581 G or the other planets?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "I guess if we don't believe in skipping stones, we're in no danger of awakening eburnean pond krakens."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "other"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > OTHER
Floyd |
Floyd | (Gliese 581 G)
Floyd | Gliese 581 G is a tidally locked planet maybe 4 times as large as
Floyd | Earth, whirling around Gliese 581 once every 37 Earth days. If it has
Floyd | a better name than Gliese 581 G, no one put it in your memory banks.
Floyd |
Floyd | There are signs of a significant atmospheric disturbance affecting the
Floyd | planet.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x atmosphere"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X ATMOSPHERE
Floyd |
Floyd | As you train your sensors on the wildly roiling storm clouds of Gliese
Floyd | 581 G, your memory banks inform you that the atmosphere has been
Floyd | affected by a recent asteroid impact. The arriving object was
Floyd | approximately 5 km in diameter, and its impact produced a seismic
Floyd | effect of 9.5 on the Richter scale at the Clubfloyd's
Floyd | location, accompanied 5 seconds later by a massive fireball, 7 minutes
Floyd | later by a rain of ejecta, and 40 minutes later by 127 m/s winds and a
Floyd | 97 dB thunderclap. It must have been very exciting.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x disturbance"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X DISTURBANCE

Floyd | later by a rain of ejecta, and 40 minutes later by 127 m/s winds and a
Floyd | 97 dB thunderclap. It must have been very exciting.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu asks, "We might need the sensor grid for the other planets?"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x grid"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X GRID
Floyd |
Floyd | Which do you mean, the internal sensors or the external sensor grid?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "external"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > EXTERNAL
Floyd |
Floyd | You request the external sensor grid to examine the functionality of
Floyd | the external sensor grid. The external sensor grid reports that the
Floyd | external sensor grid might be damaged, but it's hard to be sure due to
Floyd | the significant damage to the external sensor grid.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says, "Well..."
Jacqueline says, "heh"
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x internal grid"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X INTERNAL GRID
Floyd |
Floyd | You see nothing special about the internal sensors.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "Heh."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x life support"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X LIFE SUPPORT
Floyd |
Floyd | The life support systems are responsible for providing
Floyd | human-breathable air, human-potable water, human-edible food,
Floyd | human-tolerable temperatures, human-acceptable atmospheric pressure,
Floyd | human-approved radation levels, and a safe disposal system for human
Floyd | wastes. Of these, the radiation shielding and waste disposal system
Floyd | are still functioning correctly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x pressure"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X PRESSURE
Floyd |
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x waste disposal"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X WASTE DISPOSAL
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "fix life support"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > FIX LIFE SUPPORT
Floyd |
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says (to Floyd), "search it"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > SEARCH IT
Floyd |
Floyd | You find nothing of interest.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x shielding"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X SHIELDING
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "hm. I'm not sure how to evoke agency yet."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "land"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > LAND
Floyd |
Floyd | If the colonists activated the backup AI, it's probably a bad idea to
Floyd | land here. But you could find a different planet and land on that
Floyd | one!
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "I assume that we'll need to eventually wake key crew members, but probably not immediately."
wordsmith says (to Floyd), "x gliese a"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X GLIESE A
Floyd |
Floyd | There are six planets around Gliese 581, imaginatively named a, b, c,
Floyd | d, e, f, and g. They actually show up in your memory banks that way,
Floyd | with lower case letters. You are spectacularly unimpressed. None of
Floyd | them hold any interest for you except the originally intended
Floyd | colonization site of Gliese 581 G, which you are going to think of
Floyd | with a capital letter.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x banks"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X BANKS
Floyd |
Floyd | Examining the memory banks, you confirm that you are the colony ship
Floyd | Clubfloyd. You're carrying some 500 colonists and 30 crew
Floyd | back to Earth after an asteroid impact interrupted the colonization
Floyd | mission and damaged the hull and other systems.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says, "Well, we need to make the ship habitable at first, I guess."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x robot"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X ROBOT
Floyd |
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu asks, "The question is how, though. Do we have some androids or something?"
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > I
Floyd |
Floyd | You have cargo bays, hull damage, systems damage, frozen colonists,
Floyd | frozen crew and memory banks.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your memory banks advise you that the cargo bays used to contain
Floyd | machinery, foodstuffs, nutrient supplements, seeds and frozen ova, and
Floyd | all the other things necessary to launch a colonization mission.
Floyd | You're not completely sure what happened to all that stuff. You don't
Floyd | have any of it now, in any case.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your cargo bays currently contain nothing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
wordsmith says, "Maybe wake one crew member."
DavidW says, "It's too soon, I think."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "x crew"
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "SAVE"
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "cf3"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G

Floyd | %% Enter a save filename to write:
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd | Ok.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
wordsmith says, "I assume they could wear a spacesuit and initiate repairs."
Jacqueline starts to have Suspended flashbacks.
Jacqueline starts twitching a little.
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "repair hull"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > REPAIR HULL
Floyd |
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
wordsmith asks, "Save here first?"
Guenni says (to Floyd), "wake crew"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > WAKE CREW
Floyd |
Floyd | You access the cryosleep system and activate the revival routine for
Floyd | the frozen colonists. The revival routine works perfectly, but the
Floyd | revived crew members only stagger around for a few minutes before
Floyd | falling over and ceasing to display life signs.
Floyd |
Floyd | A subroutine linked to the cryosystems notifies you that you have no
Floyd | more crew members in cryosleep.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "I think maybe if we can land somewhere with a good atmosphere, we can then wake someone to make repairs."
DavidW says, "ACK!"
Knight_Otu says, "Oops."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "undo"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > UNDO
Floyd |
Floyd | Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd | [Previous turn undone.]
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "I didn't want to wake anyone yet!"
Knight_Otu says, "At least we have a save."
Guenni says, "I just wanted to test if the command worked. They're snoring again."
Jacqueline says, "hahaha I'm glad that we saw that though."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x crew"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X CREW
Floyd |

Floyd | 0 colonists are awake.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x logic"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > X LOGIC
Floyd |
Floyd | You conclude that there's nothing seriously wrong with your logic
Floyd | circuits.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "That does demonstrate that waking the crew and making them don space suits isn't a thing."
wordsmith says, "True."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "fly"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > FLY
Floyd |
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Guenni says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd ] Orbiting Gliese 581 G
Floyd |
Floyd | > N
Floyd |
Floyd | Going north isn't meaningful in space. You can go in toward
Floyd | Sol, out away from Sol, down toward a local planet, or
Floyd | up away from a local planet.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "Nothing seriously wrong? Oh dear."
DavidW says, "I suppose we can at least try visiting the other planets one by one, to see if any are useful."
Guenni says, "Well, at the moment I can't think of anything better."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "out"
Floyd ] Near Gliese 581
Floyd |
Floyd | > OUT
Floyd |
Floyd | You orient yourself, fire up the low FTL drive (after running a quick
Floyd | diagnostic - you wouldn't want to do anything unsafe, after all!), and
Floyd | head away from the planet.
Floyd |
Floyd | Near Gliese 581
Floyd | There's a pretty red star nearby, with a whole bunch of planets, and a
Floyd | great big galaxy beyond it.
Floyd |
Floyd | You are approximately 22 light years from the Sol system. You can go
Floyd | down toward Gliese 581, in toward Sol, or out toward the rest of the
Floyd | galaxy.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW asks, "hm. Maybe we should just go in towards Sol?"
Knight_Otu asks, "Maybe?"

Floyd |
Floyd | You adjust your heading and accelerate in toward the Sol system.
Floyd |
Floyd | Near Kapteyn's Star
Floyd | Your memory banks immediately inform you that the class M1 red dwarf
Floyd | here is Kapteyn's Star. Sparkling asteroids ring the star, producing
Floyd | a pretty halo effect.
Floyd |
Floyd | You are approximately 13 light years from the Sol system. You can go

Floyd |
Floyd | > D
Floyd |
Floyd | You orient on local landmarks and approach the most interesting
Floyd | orbital body, which happens to be a whole lot of orbital bodies, in
Floyd | this case.
Floyd |
Floyd | Kapteyn's Asteroid Belt
Floyd | Thousands of asteroids wheel around the blazing red disk of Kapetyn's
Floyd | Star. While many are inconveniently small, you could certainly make a
Floyd | landing here with careful maneuvering.

Knight_Otu says, "Just watch, they'll just deactivate us rather than thanking us."
Guenni says, "probabbly."
Guenni says (to Floyd), "land"

Floyd |
Floyd | You pick out your favorite asteroid, a nice big one, and designate it
Floyd | yours. It's too big to take home, but you can train your sensors over
Floyd | here and feel happy about it whenever you want.
Floyd |
Floyd | You orient yourself from orbit, fire your engines, and settle to the
Floyd | asteroid's surface on your thrusters.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your Personal Asteroid
Floyd | It's a spectacular view - thousands of massive asteroids whirling
Floyd | across the sky, with Kapteyn's Star at the heart of the cosmic ballet.

Floyd |
Floyd | Kapteyn's Star sets in a glorious blaze of color.
Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd | Digging into the memory bank further, you break a mental bottle of

Floyd | case of catastrophe. According to the logs, the colonists and crew
