ClubFloyd Transcript:
Birmingham IV by Peter Emery
As played on ifMUD on November 11, 2018

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Birmingham IV written by Peter Emery. This game placed 69th in the 2018 Interactive Fiction Competition. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | The Phil's Bedroom (on the Phil's bed)
Floyd | Sprawled face down on the bed, the Phil is snoozing quietly in the
Floyd | bedroom of his house in Birmingham. This - certainly - is no palace.
Floyd | The room is plain, painted magnolia, and quite empty of furniture
Floyd | other than the bed itself. A Grand Prix '87 poster hangs limply from
Floyd | the wall. Rain beats at the window. Lime green doors lead in and
Floyd | out.
Floyd |
Floyd | Lying on its side on the floor is a large mug.
Floyd |
Floyd | The Phil can also see a little card here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Roger says, "Not a good start"
DavidW asks, "hm?"
Guenni says, "Something in third person. Can't remember coming across that so far."
Roger says, "Between the spacing weirdness on 'a large mug' and 'The Phil'"
Roger says, "the latter might be style, sure"
DavidW says, "Inform 7 authors often miss spacing errors."
DavidW says, "'The Phil' might be a title, like 'the Duke'."

Floyd | Music Room
Floyd | The Phil is in the music room, plain and whitewashed with dark
Floyd | floorboards. It is is as unadorned as all the rooms in the cottage,
Floyd | but dappled light reflected from the river dances on the ceiling. An
Floyd | open window looks out over the river and the rolling West Midlands
Floyd | countryside beyond. There are no exits other than the doorway the
Floyd | Phil came in by, to the west.
Floyd |
Floyd | Dominating the room is a substantial bentside spinet, which sits along
Floyd | one wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | On the window sill are a potted plant and a letter.
Floyd |
Floyd | A Magpie is dancing on the keys of the spinet, obviously enjoying the
Floyd | noise. As the Phil enters the room, it startles, and grabs a shiny
Floyd | brass key which was lying on the lid of the spinet. Instead of flying
Floyd | out of the open window, it goes straight over his head and into the
Floyd | study - panicked no doubt. There is some banging and crashing as it
Floyd | makes its way through the cottage, but then it must have found a way
Floyd | out, because there is silence.

Floyd | > X LETTER
Floyd |
Floyd | The letter evidently came with the potted plant. The letter is from a
Floyd | sea-captain called John Nisbet. Captain Nisbet presents his
Floyd | compliments and is pleased to forward this specimen of a plant he
Floyd | encountered in His Majesty's Virginian colony, which, as he believes
Floyd | the Phil is a natural philosopher, may interest him.
Floyd |
Floyd | The Phil tries to remember who Captain Nisbet is. The Phil thinks he

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | This game is based on a true story. The protagonist is a
Floyd | real person and lived in Birmingham for several years.
Floyd |
Floyd | The game was originally written circa 1988 on a BBC microcomputer,
Floyd | using The Quill ([LINK]). This was a
Floyd | program for writing what were then called adventure games. The Quill
Floyd | was an elegant piece of software, and much could be done with it, but
Floyd | both the program and the game had to fit simultaneously into the tiny
Floyd | RAM of the BBC micro. Without exaggeration, every byte was precious,
Floyd | and the descriptions and responses ended up quite terse as a result.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Birmingham IV" was rewritten and expanded using Inform 7 in 2014-16.
Floyd | My thanks to Lili for beta testing and helpful suggestions.

DavidW says, "I doubt it. I think the cat ate the shepherd, honestly."
Guenni asks, "And who tied it up?"
DavidW says, "The shepherd. He just got too close one day."
Guenni says, "Hmm, perhaps."
jaccarmac asks, "i wonder if we could untie it and lead it?"
Guenni says, "Perhaps we need to be able to grab the axe and hit it."
jaccarmac says, "also i remember reading a review of the game and going back to it it mentions needing an item from the first bedroom"
jaccarmac asks, "did we grab everything from that room?"
Guenni says, "We have the card."
jaccarmac says, "that's right"
Guenni says, "And we know where the mug is."

jaccarmac says, "double checked the starting room in-browser and it seems that was it so we should not be locked out of anything"
Guenni says, "Let's get the smock anyway."
jaccarmac asks, "any new ideas on how?"
DavidW asks, "Does the smock wear itself down, or just keep flying to random places or what?"
Guenni asks, "It's lying around near the oak, or did you try to get it and I missed that?"

Floyd | fire was burning - it has recently gone out - although it seems the
Floyd | chimney doesn't draw very well, because the air is full of smoke.
