ClubFloyd Transcript:
Dynamite Powers vs. the Ray of Night! by Mike Carletta
As played on ifMUD on November 4, 2018

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Dynamite Powers vs. the Ray of Night! written by Mike Carletta. Dynamite Powers vs. the Ray of Night!, a superhero/space adventure parody, was an entrant in the 2018 IFComp, where it took the 25th place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | You stare lasers through the bars of your prison door at Lord Infamy.
Floyd |

Floyd | control panel. Instantly, your cage drops a meter toward the frigid

Floyd |
Floyd | Infamy strides to the edge of the lake. "You're about to make the

Floyd |
Floyd | "I intend to savor the experience. Every minute, you will be lowered a

Floyd |
Floyd | A uniformed minion hurries into the room and whispers into Infamy's
Floyd | ear. He looks pained. "It seems I shall have to forgo that pleasure

Floyd |
Floyd | Abruptly, the cage drops again. It sways slightly as it is jerked to a

Floyd | good riddance!" With a swirl of his cape, Infamy sweeps from the room.

Floyd | whoosh! The shattered pieces are swept past you like a whirlwind of
Floyd | razors. They disappear into the landscape, leaving you with only minor

Floyd |
Floyd | With victory in your grasp, you smile, contorting your frost turtle

Floyd | escaping to the Martian surface. It rapidly increases to gale force,
Floyd | forcing you to cling to the button pedestal to avoid being dragged

Floyd | reverses and the wind diminishes, ending with a hiss as the intact

Floyd |
Floyd | The Acme Mark III Deluminator lets you turn light into darkness as a
Floyd | fun, family-friendly activity!
Floyd |
Floyd | It works in three steps:
Floyd |
Floyd | 1) The chromatic disintegrator at the bottom of the Acme Mark III
Floyd | Deluminator separates natural starlight into its seven component
Floyd | beams, each of a different color.
Floyd | 2) Each of these beams passes through a different colored filter,
Floyd | transforming the beam to black.
Floyd | 3) The chromatic integrator at the top of the Acme Mark III
Floyd | Deluminator recombines the seven identical black beams into a ray of
Floyd | pure darkness!

Floyd | Technical Information
Floyd |
Floyd | Hello, gearhead!
Floyd |
Floyd | Eager to dig into the details of how the Acme Mark III Deluminator
Floyd | works? Let's start with a little background about light.
Floyd |
Floyd | If you've ever seen a rainbow, you know that light is composed seven
Floyd | different colors: white, red, violet, blue, green, yellow and black.
Floyd | Natural starlight can be separated into these component parts using a
Floyd | chromatic disintegrator.
Floyd |
Floyd | The fun starts when you transform the colored beams in different ways.
Floyd | For instance, when you filter blue light through a red lens, you'll
Floyd | get violet!
Floyd |
Floyd | Why is this? Well, the colors are arranged in cycles of seven, called
Floyd | septaves. They're a lot like the octaves you find in music. You could
Floyd | number the colors like this:
Floyd |
Floyd | 0 = White
Floyd | 1 = Red
Floyd | 2 = Violet
Floyd | 3 = Blue
Floyd | 4 = Green
Floyd | 5 = Yellow
Floyd | 6 = Black
Floyd |
Floyd | Filtering disintegrated light is like subtracting their numbers. So,
Floyd | filtering blue light (3) with a red lens (1) gives you violet light
Floyd | (2)!
Floyd |
Floyd | But what if you filter red light (1) with a blue lens (3)? They
Floyd | subtract to (-2), and there's no color for that! Well, after you reach
Floyd | the bottom of a septave, another one begins, just like an octave in
Floyd | music. So, (-1) is the same as (6), and (-2) is the same as (5). So
Floyd | red light (1) filtered through a blue lens (3) creates yellow light
Floyd | (5)!
Floyd |
Floyd | Finally, seven identical beams can be recombined and amplified into a
Floyd | coherent ray using a chromatic integrator.
Floyd |
Floyd | Of course, you don't need to keep track of all these details. Acme
Floyd | makes it simple by labeling each lens aperture with the color of the
Floyd | lens that should be placed in it. As long as you're careful to follow
Floyd | these instructions, the Acme Mark III Deluminator will always emit a
Floyd | ray of pure darkness.

Floyd | Safety Instructions
Floyd |
Floyd | Hello, fussbudget!
Floyd |
Floyd | Please follow these safety precautions when using your Acme Mark III
Floyd | Deluminator:
Floyd |
Floyd | 1) Do not immerse the deluminator. There is a small danger of
Floyd | chromaticution.
Floyd | 2) The Acme Mark III Deluminator is designed only for use with type G
Floyd | white starlight. Do not use with other star types.
Floyd | 3) Never look directly into the chromatic integrator.
Floyd | 4) Do not use on inhabited planets. This may cause the extinction of
Floyd | life on the deluminated planet.
Floyd | 5) Never use the deluminator to generate anything other than pure
Floyd | darkness. This may cause the deluminator to overheat. (For other
Floyd | colors, try the new Acme Mark IV Illuminator!)
Floyd | 6) Do not use the deluminator in the vicinity of a gas leak.
Floyd |
Floyd | Failure to follow these safety precautions will void the warranty for

Floyd | the choking black smoke billowing from the jet igniters, you make a
Floyd | running dive through the hatch and roll into the steel compartment.
Floyd | Behind you, the hatch springs shut, and locking pins seal it in place.
Floyd |
Floyd | Leaping to your feet, you seek desperately for the ladders that will
Floyd | take you forward to the crew compartments. Then you realize: this is
Floyd | no cargo compartment! You've entered the combustion chamber for the
Floyd | spaceship!
Floyd |
Floyd | Looking up, you see Lord Infamy peering through a hatch into the
Floyd | engine compartment, far out of reach. He gestures to unseen workers
Floyd | and commands "Fire the jets!" With a smile seeping malice, he slams
Floyd | the hatch shut, and you hear the wheel spin and lock.
Floyd |
Floyd | With only moments before the jets fire and incinerate you, you spin
Floyd | around, looking for an escape route. The crew has obviously been using
Floyd | this chamber as a recreation area. In their haste to prepare for
Floyd | takeoff, they've left a half-finished game of Monopoly on the floor in
Floyd | the center of the chamber. A pile of Mars Bars is nearby, as are
Floyd | several cans of Krueger's Special Beer, each with a bendy straw
Floyd | protruding from it. A "Frying Pan" electric guitar leans against a
Floyd | wall. An unopened can of Nescafé freeze-dried coffee and a half-empty
Floyd | tube of Burma-Shave lie discarded on the floor. A standing lamp with
Floyd | an ultraslate bulb casts an un-Earthly glow over the area.
Floyd |
Floyd | Fuel jets begin to spew finely-divided coal dust. With a whoomp, the
Floyd | jets ignite, illuminating your upturned face and casting harsh,
Floyd | shifting shadows. You stare into the flames of imminent death. Then…

Floyd | Ignoring everything else, you head for the only escape route!
Floyd |
Floyd | You scramble across the fallen crane, then stumble down the northern
Floyd | catwalk as it convulses beneath you, lurching from railing to railing
Floyd | like a broken-field runner avoiding tacklers. Behind you, the platform
Floyd | itself falls into the abyss with a howl of tortured steel.
Floyd |
Floyd | At the end of the catwalk is Lord Infamy's mighty imperial
Floyd | dreadnought, Conquest. Its powerful coal-fueled engines are
Floyd | already warming up, and sparks are spitting from the jet igniters.
Floyd |
Floyd | The ship's heavy steel mooring lines are falling free, and, far above,
Floyd | you can hear sirens sounding and hatches clanging shut as Infamy's
Floyd | minions prepare the spaceship for takeoff.
Floyd |
Floyd | Desperately, you cast about for some way to stop the departure - you

Knight_Otu says, "The estimate was "Longer than two hours"."
Knight_Otu says, "I don't think that's quite accurate."
DavidW says, "And we took 2 and a half."
Knight_Otu says, "And CF usually takes longer than a standard playthrough."
DavidW says, "well, a bit less than that. We didn't start immediately at 2pm"
DavidW says, "I guess we were expected to make the wrong choices at the first machine."
DavidW says, "Or not escape the cage so quickly."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah. That's a possibility."
Knight_Otu says, "And die a few cruel deaths in trying."
DavidW says, "It turns out that the cage has to be fully down at the pool for there to be enough cable to swing to the shore."
Knight_Otu says, "Makes sense."
DavidW says, "anyway congrats to our victory!"
Knight_Otu asks, "Now where did we put our fireproof underwear?"
DavidW says, "Darned if I know."
DavidW says, "We'll have to ask Rosalind."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Anyway, horray!"
DavidW says, "I'm glad the pure white light didn't blind everyone on Earth."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah. I'm guessing the other colors give a slightly different text."
DavidW says, "oh, yeah. We could, in theory, bathe the Earth all in red light or all violet light or whatever."
Knight_Otu says, "But I'm fine with the white light."
DavidW says, "yeah"
