ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Day I shot Alex by Marius Müller
The Horste by Roger Carbol
As played on ifMUD on January 15, 2017

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Day I shot Alex written by Marius Müller, and The Horste written by Roger Carbol. You can learn more about the games, including how to download them, by visiting the IFDB pages: The Horste, and The Day I shot Alex.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing these games, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played these games, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

ANOTHER WARNING! A lot (most!) of the transcripts contained on this site are, shall we say, family-friendly. This is not one of those family-friendly transcripts. Just so we're clear.

Floyd | CONFUSING PROLOGUE

Floyd | The emergency siren wakes you from uneasy dreams.
Floyd | What's going on? You dimly recall the scientists are examining the

Floyd | You are in the sleeping quarters. This room is very white and very

Floyd | THE EMERGENCY SIREN BLARES!

Ellison says, "how confusing"
Jacqueline says, "Okay, do we need a refresher on what's happened thus far, or will that be revealed? I've slept almost 365 times since the last game."
Roger asks, "Oh is this part of a series?"
Taleslinger says (to jacqueline), "It will come up in game"
Jacqueline says, "The eternal series, judging by the title. But maybe I'm wrong."

Floyd | This holo is full of minute details. It depicts a gargantuan space
Floyd | battle. You can't make out a clear winner, but it looks like one of
Floyd | them is a ragtag bunch of diverse ships, and the other is a bunch of
Floyd | ugly, organic looking ships. The plaque confirms what you suspected,

Floyd | You are a host who appears to be a horse. You are a horste.
Floyd |
Peregrine says, "Oooey."
Ellison says, "interesting premise"
Peregrine's mind expands.
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | >You're not really that sort of horste.
Floyd |
Peregrine asks, "Whaddyamean?"
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "take"
Floyd | >(the stall)
Floyd | You would have to get out of the stall first.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "eat francis"
Floyd | >He's plainly inedible.
Floyd |
Floyd | The stable doors open and you can see it's Dolores, right on time.
Floyd | Wearing that same damn blue dress she always wears. Your respect for
Floyd | the park's laundry and costuming department knows no bounds.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "eat dolores"
Floyd | >The stall isn't open.
Floyd |
Floyd | Dolores walks up to your stall and opens it. "Good morning, Trigger,"
Floyd | she says. "Time to get ourselves to Sweetwater."
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "x dolores"
Floyd | >Poor old Dolores. She's losing her mind before she's even found it.
Floyd |
Floyd | Francis snickers again. "Have fun in Sweetwater, "Trigger"," he says.
Floyd |
Floyd | You roll your eyes. "Easy with the slave names there, "Buttercup".
Floyd | That shuts him up.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | >Stables (in the stall)
Floyd | This large building, which despite what the all the city-slickers seem
Floyd | to think is not a barn, is where you and the other horses, donkeys,
Floyd | mules, and so forth, hang out when you're not on stage. It's pretty
Floyd | charming as far as stables go.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see Dolores here.
Floyd |
Floyd | In the stall you can see Francis.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "go out"
Floyd | >Dolores mounts up and it's an uneventful trot over to Sweetwater.
Floyd |
Floyd | You reach the train tracks, dutifully-looking both ways before
Floyd | crossing. You don't need to turn your head to do this.
Floyd |
Floyd | Dolores rides you over to the General Store and ties you up while she
Floyd | goes inside.
Floyd |
Floyd | Outside the General Store
Floyd | Virtually the only place Dolores, and hence you, visit in Sweetwater is
Floyd | the general store. It's, well, it's pretty general. It's still early
Floyd | enough that the sun hasn't really started to beat down yet, but you
Floyd | know it will.
Floyd |
Jacqueline says, "Actually, hrm."
Peregrine asks, "Hrm?"
Jacqueline says, "Maybe I should also avoid."
Jacqueline asks, "You have enough people to play without me, right?"
Roger says, "sure"
Jacqueline says (to Roger), "I guess you can pester me, too."
Jacqueline smiles.
Jacqueline says, "Thanks for understanding."
Peregrine examines the company, chewing his mustache with on hand on his Colt.
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "shoot dolores"
Floyd | >That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Jacqueline disappears through an invisible gap in the MUD. You think you may have heard the sounds of chatting before the gap closed again. Peregrine says, "right. we're a horse. doh."
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | >Outside the General Store
Floyd | Virtually the only place Dolores, and hence you, visit in Sweetwater is
Floyd | the general store. It's, well, it's pretty general. It's still early
Floyd | enough that the sun hasn't really started to beat down yet, but you
Floyd | know it will.
Floyd |
Floyd | One of the fattest humans you've ever seen staggers down the street
Floyd | towards you. It must be drunk of its face -- maybe it was drinking all
Floyd | night? You start to have a bad feeling about today.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "x humans"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "x human"
Floyd | >You've seen literal pigs (well, literal pig-robots (porsts)) with a
Floyd | lower BMI than this guest. You suspect it only came here for a good
Floyd | excuse to wear a poncho.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your worst fears are confirmed as the guest manages to get a foot into
Floyd | a stirrup and haul its enormous bulk onto your back.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "kick"
Floyd | >(the fat human)
Floyd | To pull that off you'd need to be a lot more flexible than even you
Floyd | are.
Floyd |
Floyd | The human starts kicking you in the ribs and shouting "Yaa! Yeehaw!
Floyd | Giddyup!" and then later "Horse! Commence locomotion! Begin! Start!
Floyd | Resume all motor functions!" It doesn't stop kicking you throughout,
Floyd | but at least it is weak and didn't even have the sense to wear spurs.
Floyd |
Peregrine asks, "Commence locomotion???"
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "bite"
Floyd | >(the fat human)
Floyd | It's tempting, but it's likely to just get you shot somewhere
Floyd | important.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "eat human"
Floyd | >That's plainly inedible.
Floyd |
Floyd | The human stops and you have the sense it may have noticed that you are
Floyd | still tied up.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | >Outside the General Store
Floyd | Virtually the only place Dolores, and hence you, visit in Sweetwater is
Floyd | the general store. It's, well, it's pretty general. It's still early
Floyd | enough that the sun hasn't really started to beat down yet, but you
Floyd | know it will.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a fat human here.
Floyd |
Floyd | With enormous effort, your rider dismounts in the least graceful way
Floyd | possible and ends up flat on its back.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "kick human"
Floyd | >Very tempting, but it's too likely to just get you shot in the head.
Floyd |
Floyd | The human tries to undo the reins with its fat stumpy fingers, but
Floyd | cannot manage it.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "go"
Floyd | >You'll have to say which compass direction to go in.
Floyd |
Floyd | The human pulls out a knife and with a vicious slash severs the reins
Floyd | entirely.
Floyd |
Peregrine says, "Good Lord."
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "run"
Floyd | >You'll have to say which compass direction to go in.
Floyd |
Floyd | A push and a shove and somehow the guest has clamoured back aboard.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your rider begins kicking, wailing, whining, and cajouling again. He
Floyd | must want to get out of here badly. Not so badly as to actually walk
Floyd | himself, but pretty badly. Through the door of the general store, you
Floyd | can see Dolores is finishing up with paying for her tin of condensed
Floyd | milk.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "x dolores"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "go n"
Floyd | >You can't go that way.
Floyd |
Floyd | Dolores walks back out the general store. "Now what in tarnation do
Floyd | you think you're doing?" she asks indignantly. You shrug as only
Floyd | horses can.
Floyd |
Peregrine says, "Heehee."
Peregrine says, "I suspect this is one of these games where you don't do much besides spectating."
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see Dolores and a fat human here.
Floyd |
Floyd | The fat human doesn't even say anything. He just shoots Dolores in her
Floyd | purty mouth.
Floyd |
Peregrine says, "Ouch."
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | >Outside the General Store
Floyd | Virtually the only place Dolores, and hence you, visit in Sweetwater is

Floyd | enough that the sun hasn't really started to beat down yet, but you
Floyd | know it will.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see Dolores and a fat human here.
Floyd |
Floyd | The bloodshed is predictable but no less tiresome for it. Before you
Floyd | get shot in the head yourself, you decide maybe it's time to get
Floyd | underway.
Floyd |
Floyd | You canter away at the most tooth-rattling, groin-crushing pace you can
Floyd | manage. The fat human astride you alternates trying to get you to
Floyd | speed up to a gallop or to slow down to a walk for about a mile or two
Floyd | before giving up. You have free rein, perhaps under the notion that of
Floyd | course you'd be a self-driving horse.
Floyd |
Floyd | You head off into the hills and into some terrain that most humans find
Floyd | picturesque. Your rider seems happy enough with that, being content to
Floyd | on occasion laugh, babble, cry, smoke, vomit, weep more, shake its fist
Floyd | at the sky, and other quaint human pre-occupations.
Floyd |
Floyd | Eventually the day turns to dusk, and you can't let the human just
Floyd | freeze to death out here, so you head off towards a camp narrative that
Floyd | you're aware of.
Floyd |
Floyd | Camp
Floyd | Some cattle-driving robots have set up camp here. They seem to be
Floyd | arguing about something.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a fat human and some robots here.
Floyd |
Peregrine asks, "Oh, so Dolores wasn't a host?"
Peregrine asks, "Or do they bleed?"
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "listen"
Floyd | >You hear nothing unexpected.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "robots"
Floyd | >That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "x robots"
Floyd | >They seem to be stuck in a loop for some reason; they can't proceed
Floyd | until they eat, but they can't eat without a fire, but they can't make
Floyd | a fire without some chopped firewood, and the woodcutter seems to have
Floyd | wandered off somewhere.
Floyd |
Peregrine says, "Hahaha."

Peregrine exclaims, "!"
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "xme"
Floyd | >That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | >You are, to all external appearances, a palomino mare, perhaps ten
Floyd | years of age, standing fifteen hands high at the withers, of calm
Floyd | temperament and unusual intelligence.
Floyd |
Floyd | This, of course, is all a lie. You are a robot, extruded in a factory
Floyd | some thirty years ago, and possessing one of the most advanced
Floyd | artificial brains on the planet. Like all the other robots here, you
Floyd | are a host, existing for the amusement of the human guests.

Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a fat human and some robots here.
Floyd |
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "d"
Floyd | >You wander up a nearby hill. It's getting pretty dark, but your
Floyd | eyesight is far superior to the average mammal.
Floyd |
Floyd | Atop a Hill
Floyd | The view from here is spectacular, even for a robot with your jaded
Floyd | tastes. A lone tree is silhouetted against the darkening sky.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a woodcutter here.
Floyd |
Peregrine exclaims, "!!!!!"
Peregrine exclaims, "I try to go down and the horse goes up!"
Peregrine asks, "Bug?"
Roger says, "maybe"
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "x woodcutter"
Floyd | >He stands upon the very edge of a precipice, his right arm extended to
Floyd | the heavens. He is completely motionless. A slightly twinkling in the
Floyd | motes over him indicate... something. He's shining a laser up there?
Floyd | You follow the trajectory and spot a star that shouldn't be there,
Floyd | moving slowly (but not slowly for a star.) He's broadcasting to a
Floyd | satellite, apparently. That can't be an approved activity; no wonder
Floyd | his mates down at the camp got stuck.
Floyd |
Peregrine exclaims, "Espionage!"
Peregrine says (to Floyd), "kick woodcutter"
Floyd | >He doesn't notice you at all, so it's easy to give him a little kick.
Floyd | He loses his footing and tumbles into the crevasse below; you get a
Floyd | laser in the eye for your troubles. It doesn't damage you, though.
Floyd |
Peregrine says, "Ooops."
Peregrine asks, "Is the game unwinnable now?"
Roger says, "no"
Peregrine says, "oh good"

Floyd |
Floyd | In the morning, you run back to your stables and let yourself in.
Floyd | Dolores won't remember anything was ever amiss, of course.
Floyd |
Floyd | Later, you hear through the grapevine that some poor robot went crazy
Floyd | and threw himself down a crevasse, then smashed his own head in.
Floyd | That's a shame.

Peregrine says, "And the description of the camp was too sparse for me to figure out the exits."
Roger asks, "Ellison, any comment?"
Peregrine exclaims, "Okay, so time for goodnight. Seeya!"
Peregrine exclaims, "And thanks!"
Peregrine hops into the DeLorean and heads off to the future. Ellison says, "sorry, I missed partaking in the gameplay since I had to help my grandmother with something, but, yeah, interesting approach to give the animals so much awareness and I liked the woodcutter story approach"
Roger says, "Thanks"
Ellison says, "was it possible to leave without Delores getting shot? it seemed Peregrine wasn't trying any traveling verbs"
Roger says, "It is, yeah"
Roger says, "Anyway if you want to try playing it yourself right now, feel free"

Floyd | The human pulls out a knife and with a vicious slash severs the reins
Floyd | entirely.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "s"
Floyd | >You seize your opportunity and gallop off. "Hey! Horse!" you hear
Floyd | someone yelling behind you. A moment later, you hear a more-feminine
Floyd | voice yell "Hey, my horse!"
Floyd |
Floyd | You should probably just go back to the ranch. And you will,
Floyd | eventually. But now you've got a day to do whatever you please, and
Floyd | you intend on taking advantage of it.
Floyd |
Floyd | Eventually the day turns to dusk, and you don't want to break a leg out
Floyd | here, so you head off towards a camp narrative that you're aware of.
Floyd |
Floyd | Camp
Floyd | Some cattle-driving robots have set up camp here. They seem to be
Floyd | arguing about something.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see some robots here.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x robots"
Floyd | >They seem to be stuck in a loop for some reason; they can't proceed
Floyd | until they eat, but they can't eat without a fire, but they can't make
Floyd | a fire without some chopped firewood, and the woodcutter seems to have
Floyd | wandered off somewhere.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x fire"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "cut wood"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "u"
Floyd | >You wander up a nearby hill. It's getting pretty dark, but your
Floyd | eyesight is far superior to the average mammal.
Floyd |
Floyd | Atop a Hill
Floyd | The view from here is spectacular, even for a robot with your jaded
Floyd | tastes. A lone tree is silhouetted against the darkening sky.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a woodcutter here.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x sky"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x tree"
Floyd | >A good tree for hangings.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "hang woodcutter"
Floyd | >That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x woodcutter"
Floyd | >He stands upon the very edge of a precipice, his right arm extended to
Floyd | the heavens. He is completely motionless. A slightly twinkling in the
Floyd | motes over him indicate... something. He's shining a laser up there?
Floyd | You follow the trajectory and spot a star that shouldn't be there,
Floyd | moving slowly (but not slowly for a star.) He's broadcasting to a
Floyd | satellite, apparently. That can't be an approved activity; no wonder
Floyd | his mates down at the camp got stuck.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x laser"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x satellite"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x star"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "kick woodcutter"
Floyd | >He doesn't notice you at all, so it's easy to give him a little kick.
Floyd | He loses his footing and tumbles into the crevasse below; you get a
Floyd | laser in the eye for your troubles. It doesn't damage you, though.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x crevasse"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "x woodcutter"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Ellison says (to Floyd), "d"
Floyd | >You wander back down to the camp, almost breaking your ankle several
Floyd | times. You'd better stay put for the night.
Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, QUIT or UNDO the last
Floyd | command?
BrianK goes home. Roger says, "Yep that's pretty much everything"
Ellison says, "anyhow, I like the idea of them being slightly more aware as that makes narrative sense (in terms of them taking people to different narratives and such). not sure I love how far in that direction you've gone, but I'm happy to see Westworld fanfic just the same... and being responsible for the woodcutter being in the crevasse was a cute touch."
Ellison says, "thanks for writing it!"
Roger says, "Thanks for playing! It was a fun thing to write."
Roger says, "So that makes my last two works both fanfic. Uh oh."
Roger says, "I guess I could expand it so that this horste fills all the plotholes from the entire season"
Roger says, "Just pulling stuff in the background"
Ellison says, "haha"
