ClubFloyd Transcript:
Introduction to Beyond Division by Joseph Geipel
As played on ifMUD on September 13, 2015

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Introduction to Beyond Division written by Joseph Geipel. It took first place in the 2015 IntroComp. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | Conversation in this game works by keywords. When you see some text in
Floyd | the story that isn't a room name bolded, like apples or
Floyd | house, that likely means that it is a conversation topic. To
Floyd | talk about said topic, simply type in the topic with no verb. All
Floyd | currently available topics will also be shown below the command line
Floyd | if you are in conversation. You may also want to answer yes or no
Floyd | questions asked by other characters by simply typing YES or NO. TALK
Floyd | TO (PERSON) can be used to setup a conversation if one is not already
Floyd | going on.
Floyd |
Floyd | You will switch between different characters in this game: to see what
Floyd | character you are currently playing as, check the top right of the
Floyd | screen. Examining yourself (X ME) can give further information about
Floyd | who you are currently playing as. Also, not all characters are
Floyd | primarily reliant on sight for information, but even if they aren't
Floyd | LOOK and LOOK AT will retain their usual roles for the sake of
Floyd | gameplay.
Floyd |
Floyd | There will also be several footnotes in this game, observed by numbers
Floyd in brackets like [1] in the middle of the prose, which can be referred
Floyd | to via FOOTNOTE #, where # is the number of the footnote. Commands in
Floyd | this game that are not part of standard IF games for the most part
Floyd | should be able to be inferred by context or by attributes of the
Floyd | current player character.

Floyd | And there's some Latin via scientific naming! Canis, canis,

Floyd | Flaukulla (flaw-cola) is a word I made up—supposedly the surname of a

Floyd | also not too relevant but is pretty interesting is that when I was

Floyd | report on an important figure in early 19th century American history.
Floyd | We all found a quote and made a trinket concerning our chosen person.
Floyd | I ended up doing a report on William Clark, with his legendary
Floyd | misspelled journal entry "Ocian in view! O! The Joy!" and a simple
Floyd | cardboard telescope. I was focused enough on the report that I
Floyd | suddenly started calling that as-of-yet-unnamed scientist in that
Floyd | as-of-yet-unnamed story I was making "Dr. Clark."
Floyd |
Floyd | Then, in late April 2010, I had a bizarre dream that gave me Dr.
Floyd | Clark's first name: the unusual name of Huncel (Hon-cell, with hon as
Floyd | in honey). I believe I came up with the name of Beyond
Floyd | Division at about the same time.

Floyd | The first thing you notice is a lack of any temporary features in the
Floyd | room this time: all that is here is the usual canine accoutrements and
Floyd | human furniture. The sleeping cell is east and the rest of this place
Floyd | is to the north.
Floyd |
Floyd | Huncel takes a seat on the recliner and gestures you to get on the rug
Floyd | below it if you want.
Floyd |
Floyd | "So, in lieu of what we normally do, how about we talk a bit? I
Floyd | believe at this point you are more willing than previously to just
Floyd | talk about you and your feelings."
Floyd |
Floyd | Query as to whether this will still lead to treats, or jump
Floyd | straight in?

Floyd |
Floyd | "Will you still give treats?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yes, this counts as an experiment. And the first part of the test
Floyd | was whether you'd question the possibility of treats due to the
Floyd | significant change. Good job, you've earned an extra eventual
Floyd | treat!" Huncel sends you a weird vision, and then, detecting your
Floyd | lack of understanding, assures you that it is supposed to represent a
Floyd | human smiling.
Floyd |
Floyd | "So, Ambassador, are you content at this moment?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Lament the lack of opportunities to tear The Tide up, or lament
Floyd | the lack of a mate? It feels like Huncel is hinting something
Floyd | more around the food end of things, though.

Jacqueline asks, "So, I guess there was some time that passed?"
DavidW says, "yes. We seem to have moved forward in time somewhat."
Jacqueline says, "Yeah."
Jacqueline says, "A considerable bit, it feels like."
DavidW says, "At least a month."
Jacqueline says, "Let's go ith opportunities - I want to learn more about The Tide."
DavidW says, "ok"

Floyd | >
Floyd | > OPPORTUNITIES
Floyd |
Floyd | You send all the messages you can that imply that you'd want to spend
Floyd | the rest of your life at war with The Tide, but Huncel sends
Floyd | exasperation and his emotional memories of the glass incident: how he
Floyd | was worried he couldn't control and that you would endanger everyone
Floyd | in the facility including yourself, plus the paternal feelings he's
Floyd | trying and failing to hide. Seems Huncel will never give that up.
Floyd |
Floyd | "That does bring us elsewhere though. We humans often ask why. Why
Floyd | is the sky blue, why do you have your abilities, why do we do what we
Floyd | do? So I ask you: why do you hate The Tide the way do you?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Well, Huncel hates The Tide because of its damage to humanity,
Floyd | and The Tide injured you. What reason do you need though? The
Floyd | Tide is an interloping force.

Floyd | >
Floyd | > INJURED
Floyd |
Floyd | You repeat your encounter with The Tide.
Floyd |
Floyd | "There's still something more, Ambassador. Maybe you don't know it
Floyd | yourself, but something unprecedented must have happened to you. In
Floyd | the entire history of humanity there is not one case of a wolf or
Floyd | anything at all with telepathy like yours, and other animals pretty
Floyd | much never get that angry at the species of something that attacked
Floyd | them."
Floyd |
Floyd | The back of your mind screams at a possible reason for it all, but you
Floyd | just can't bring it up into something concrete.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, I know you're against The Tide and all, but aren't you
Floyd | happy that you don't have to hunt anymore? This would be a paradise
Floyd | for you if your motivations were that of a typical wolf."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline asks, "no?"
DavidW asks, "A box is 'paradise'? Is Huncel kidding?"
Jacqueline says, "Right"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "no"

Floyd | > NO
Floyd |
Floyd | "It just doesn't make me that happy."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, it should. You do like treats at least. Speaking of which,
Floyd | I'll go get them now. Just stay here for a bit and maybe play with one
Floyd | of your chew toys."
Floyd |
Floyd | And Huncel leaves north and closes the door behind him. You cut the
Floyd | channel and have your mind entirely to yourself once again.
Floyd |
Floyd | Huncel is The Tide's enemy. You are The Tide's enemy. But Huncel still
Floyd | doesn't understand your actions. Next glass incident, you'll actually
Floyd | break through the glass and bite the creature beyond it. You know it
Floyd | already.

Jacqueline exclaims, "!"
Jacqueline says, "I was not expecting the end now. I expected it before this scene shift, then completely forgot this might end abruptly."
Roger says, "Hmmm so yeah that turned out on the worthwhile end of things"
DavidW asks, "seems like the Ambassador might have a touch of precognition there? Or was that just wishful thinking?"
Jacqueline asks, "Experiencing the intro, you mean? Or the actions we took?"
Roger says, "overall"
DavidW says, "I can see why this entry won. Very unusual and captivating."
Roger says, "Some errors but not the usual ones"
Jacqueline asks (of Roger), "Which?"
Roger says, "hmmm just in the way it was structured and paced, in my opinion"
Roger says, "It was unnecessarily coy about what it was about, I think"
Jacqueline asks, "The bit at the beginning? The Latin?"
Roger says, "The latin and the whole intro bit, and then all the character switching"
Roger says, "But as an early draft it stands well"
Jacqueline says, "It's good, yea."
Jacqueline says, "er, yeah."
DavidW says, "I don't object to the character switching, but I agree the emphasis on Latin at the very beginning is rather misleading."
Jacqueline says, "What David said."
