NightFloyd Transcript:
Ponderances by Roadcrosser
Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots by Benjamin Mullins
Shade by Andrew Plotkin
As played on ifMUD on June 12, 2014

Like ClubFloyd, the idea behind NightFloyd is that a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Unlike ClubFloyd, NightFloyd often takes on significantly larger works of interactive fiction, knowing going in that each one will take multiple sessions (but not always, as you'll see in this transcript). NightFloyd is also a bit more informal than ClubFloyd in that it's only announced on the ifMUD #clubfloyd bulletin board, and the time shifts around to meet player's schedules far more than ClubFloyd does. NightFloyd is organized by genericgeekgirl, aka Adri.

Below is a transcript of Ponderances written by Roadcrosser, Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots written by Benjamin Mullins, and Shade written by Andrew Plotkin. Ponderances is a new game, released in 2014. Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots is a game that was released in 2005. Shade was released in 2000, and won a number of awards. Coincidentally, Shade was played again on ClubFloyd by a different group just a few days later on June 15th, so you may wish to read that transcript as well. You can learn more about the games, including how to download them, by visiting the IFDB pages: Ponderances, Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots, and Shade.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing these games, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played these games, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd |
Floyd | Odd, how the light just makes your apartment gloomier. Pre-dawn
Floyd | darkness pools in the corners and around the tops of walls. Your desk
Floyd | lamp glares yellow, but the shadows only draw your eyes and deepen.
Floyd |
Floyd | Not much of an apartment, no. One desk, paper-piled, with a dusty
Floyd | computer shoved to the side. Your futon. Second-hand stereo sitting on
Floyd | a cardboard crate. A kitchen nook one way and a bathroom nook the
Floyd | other, with a closet to the side. A broad mirror tries to make the
Floyd | place seem twice its size; it halfway works. One window, whose shade
Floyd | is down, and the front door firmly shut.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your luggage is piled untidily by the door. A potted hyacinth sits
Floyd | beneath the window.
Floyd |
Floyd | You are sprawled on the futon, staring up into that gloom. Your eyes
Floyd | feel gritty. But it's too late -- early -- no time left for sleep,
Floyd | anyway. In a few hours your ride will arrive.
Floyd |
Floyd | On the desk are your to-do list and a travel book.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "about"
Floyd | This is a one-room game set in your apartment. ...But perhaps you've
Floyd | already gathered that.
Floyd |
Floyd | SHADE mostly uses the standard vocabulary of interactive fiction. You
Floyd | may find the command "find..." (or "where is...") convenient, though
Floyd | not critically important.
Floyd |
Floyd | SHADE is copyright 2000 by Andrew Plotkin (erkyrath@eblong.com). He
Floyd | began coding it on the morning of September 2, 2000, and raced like
Floyd | the wind to finish it in time for the Sixth Annual IF Competition.
Floyd | (SHADE placed tenth, which is pretty darn good, considering the
Floyd | overall excellence of the entries that year.) For more IF by the same
Floyd | author, see
Floyd |
Floyd | <[LINK]
Floyd |
Floyd | SHADE may be distributed for free, but not sold or included in any
Floyd | for-profit collection without written permission from the author.
Floyd |
Floyd | All hail the beta-tester: Michael Kinyon (still inevitable after all
Floyd | these years). And the people who sent bug reports after the
Floyd | competition, who include (but are not limited to): Ross Presser,
Floyd | Gunther Schmidl, Matthew Murray, Joe Mason, Nick Wolfe, Caleb Wilson,
Floyd | Neil Cerutti, Jason McIntosh, Daryl McCullough, Lelah Conrad, Jeff
Floyd | Hall. And -- this game is dedicated to Meatball Fulton.

Floyd | getting slowly more apparent for hours now.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Floyd | feels like a hangover, only without the preceding party.

Floyd |
Floyd | The task list for your impending journey is a mess of crossed-out
Floyd | items and scribbled corrections. However, everything seems to have
Floyd | gotten done. The last line reads "Call taxi", and it has its
Floyd | checkmark, and here you wait.
Floyd |

Floyd | computer shoved to the side. Your futon. Second-hand stereo sitting on
Floyd | a cardboard crate. A kitchen nook one way and a bathroom nook the
Floyd | other, with a closet to the side. A broad mirror tries to make the
Floyd | place seem twice its size; it halfway works. One window, whose shade
Floyd | is down, and the front door firmly shut.

Floyd |
Floyd | Right now, however, there's a game on the screen -- one of the text
Floyd | adventures, or interactive fictions, or whatever they are this month
Floyd | -- the only kind of game your beige antique can run, anyway.
Floyd |

Floyd | You hear a car approaching outside.
Floyd |
Floyd | The radio begins playing a reggae-Manx melody.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "x taxi"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "open shade"
Floyd | And if you see no taxi outside? What then? ...but the angry honking
Floyd | comes again. You yank hard on the windowshade, and it whips up as
Floyd | violently.
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Blazing daylight floods the room.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "x taxi"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | Sunlight cuts across the room like hot butter, blazing from the
Floyd | window. The room is nearly barren now; walls and ceiling are blank,
Floyd | but for the window, the closed front door, and the full-length mirror
Floyd | across from them.
Floyd |
Floyd | The futon sits alone in the center of the room. Next to it, askew on a
Floyd | pile of sand, rests the faithful old stereo.
Floyd |
Floyd | The computer has survived somehow, and lies in a pile of sand. A
Floyd | potted cactus sits beneath the window.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a travel book, your to-do list and hills of sand here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "x car"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "look outside"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to look.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "l through window"
Floyd | Outside, dunes roll away to the rising sun. Nothing else is visible.
Floyd | Only the sunlight that burns you, full in the face. And sand.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "x list"
Floyd | The task list for your impending journey is a mess of crossed-out
Floyd | items and scribbled corrections. It is entirely illegible.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "call taxi"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognize.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "z"
Floyd | Time passes.
Floyd |
Floyd | The radio begins playing an Antarcto-Hmong song.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "z"
Floyd | Time passes.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "open door"
Floyd | You do not want that.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "touch mirror"
Floyd | You look into the mirror. The far side is just as bright as this one.
Floyd | With the sunlight behind you, only your own face is in shadow -- the
Floyd | walls, the door, your furniture, are all full-lit. Beyond your
Floyd | reflection and the window-frame, the street outside, the houses and
Floyd | trees, are all --
Floyd |
Floyd | The street outside?
Floyd |
Floyd | You spin around.
Floyd |
diggle pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd [Hit any key...]
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Odd, how the sunlight just makes your apartment more prosaic.
Floyd |
Floyd | Not much of an apartment, no. One desk, paper-piled, with a dusty
Floyd | computer shoved to the side. Your futon. Second-hand stereo sitting on
Floyd | a cardboard crate. A kitchen nook one way and a bathroom nook the
Floyd | other, with a closet to the side. A broad mirror tries to make the
Floyd | place seem twice its size; it halfway works. One window, whose shade
Floyd | is up, and the front door wide open.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your luggage is piled untidily by the door. A potted hyacinth sits
Floyd | beneath the window.
Floyd |
Floyd | On the desk are your to-do list and a travel book.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "x list"
Floyd | You can't quite make out anything unusual.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "z"
Floyd | Time passes.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "open door"
Floyd | You take a step across the room, but a quick movement distracts you.
Floyd | Something scurried along the wall? You can't see it any more.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "x wall"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the north wall, the south wall, the east wall, the
Floyd | west wall, the northeast wall, the northwest wall, the southeast wall
Floyd | or the southwest wall?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | You see nothing special about the north wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | You survey your one small room. One desk, paper-piled, with a dusty
Floyd | computer shoved to the side. Your futon. Second-hand stereo sitting on

Floyd | Dehydration, probably.
Floyd |

diggle says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying nothing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "enter bathroom"
Floyd | You need to sit down.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "sit"
Floyd | (on top of the futon)
Floyd | You reach out and touch your hand to the futon. It feels like glass.
Floyd |
Floyd | The reflection shimmers like water, but the mirror is only heat --
Floyd | pooling among the dunes, rising from the sands.
Floyd |
diggle pushes the green 'space' button.

diggle says (to Floyd), "x futon"

Floyd | sheet-wrinkles, but it's the same old futon in the end.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "sit"

diggle says (to Floyd), "turn off stereo"
Floyd | A garbled news report comes on just as you reach for the switch.
Floyd | "Death Val... hikers... missing for... still... hope, say..."

Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd | >
diggle says (to Floyd), "figure, hi"

diggle says, "what the fuck exactly happened? .."
diggle says, "err"
diggle says, "sorry, I thought filters"
DavidW says, "Everyone asks that."
DavidW says, "Everyone wants to know what happened in Shade."
diggle asks, "but no one knows?"
DavidW says, "There are many theories."
DavidW says, "Well, the author knows, but he's letting the game speak for itself."
diggle says, "heh the game doesn't speak well, or maybe we can't listen correctly"
DavidW says, "One explanation is that the PC died before the game begins of dehydration, and was one of the people mentioned in the stereo's news report."
Zach says, "I assumed in the process of dying"
diggle says, "maybe the pc is in the afterlife and they're playing "my simulator has more sand then yours?""
Zach says, "Suffering from dehydration-induced hallucinations"
DavidW says, "But there's also this possible business where the desert and the human are played by two gods who take turns in those roles."
Zach says, "Which is a real thing"
DavidW says, "The hallucination idea is likely too, yes."
Zach says, "When I was in Boy Scouts, I guy got dehydrated on a hike and started hugging trees"
DavidW says, "Like, the PC was really lost in the desert and hallucinated he/she was in their apartment."
DavidW says (to Zach), "It's the trees that hug back that you want to stay away from."
diggle asks, "or maybe he was dying? you know? life flashing before you and all that stuff?"
Zach says, "If only we could ask the author. But he's a notorious recluse living in the wilderness of Massachusetts."
DavidW says, "Perhaps we should be asking why the game is called Shade and not Sand."
DavidW says, "A shade protects you, or tries to, but it also shields you from really seeing what's happening, keeps you in the dark."
Zach says, "Shade is also what you wish you had in the desert"
diggle asks, "maybe something bad happened, the pc's mind couldn't cope with it, and he created that illusion in his/her mind?"
diggle says, "darkness is already crawling around the edges of the windowshade. You have no desire to look night in the face"
DavidW says, "That's odd. Normally you don't want to look directly at the sun."
diggle says, ""some part of reality is still crawling in. You have no desire to look reality right in the face, hence breaking your sanity" hmm"
diggle asks, "can't anyone ask the author?"
DavidW says, "Sure. That doesn't mean he has to answer."
diggle says, "haha"
diggle says, "true"
DavidW says, "The author is zarf, by the way."
diggle says, "ah"
DavidW says, "[LINK] doesn't give anything away."
DavidW says, "One player's essay on the game is here: [LINK]"
DavidW says, "It describes the apartment as a shadow world."
