NightFloyd Transcript:
Oxygen by Benjamin Sokal
As played on ifMUD on February 13, 2014

Like ClubFloyd, the idea behind NightFloyd is that a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Unlike ClubFloyd, NightFloyd often takes on significantly larger works of interactive fiction, knowing going in that each one will take multiple sessions (but not always, as you'll see in this transcript). NightFloyd is also a bit more informal than ClubFloyd in that it's only announced on the ifMUD #clubfloyd bulletin board, and the time shifts around to meet player's schedules far more than ClubFloyd does. NightFloyd is organized by genericgeekgirl, aka Adri.

Below is a transcript of Oxygen written by Benjamin Sokal. Oxygen was released as part of the 2010 Interactive Fiction Competition, in which it took twelfth place. It went on to be nominated for a Best Individual Puzzle Xyzzy. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd |
Floyd | It's been a long day of squeezing and squirming through the corridors
Floyd | of the Aegis mining station. After four conduit repairs, three data
Floyd | integrity checks and a host of valve replacements, you're ready for a
Floyd | shower. It's work like this that could earn you a promotion...
Binder pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd | shower. It's work like this that could earn you a promotion...BANG!
Floyd |
Floyd | Suddenly, the station is rocked by an explosion.
Floyd |
Floyd | It knocks you off your feet and nearly down a jefferies tube, but you
Floyd | barely manage to hold on. Your toolbox slides into the tube and
Floyd | crashes 20 feet below. The sound echoes all around you, and then there
Floyd | is only dead silence.
Floyd |
Floyd | What the hell happened? Your thoughts turn to the striking miners, or
Floyd | turncoats as the Captain calls them. They had shut themselves off in
Floyd | the south wing two weeks ago, determined not to drill one more cent of
Floyd | ore until their terms were met: higher wages, reasonable working
Floyd | hours, more reliable drill suits.
Floyd |
Floyd | The Captain didn't bend, of course, and with the guile sure to win him
Floyd | a pay raise he shut the pressure hatches to the entire area. The 58
Floyd | workers would be completely isolated until the Empire sent in their
Floyd | negotiating squad, along with a replacement team.
Floyd |
Floyd | But what were the strikers trying to do, blow up the station?
Floyd | Something isn't right.
Floyd |
Floyd | You tuck in your technician uniform and take a breath. The Galactic
Floyd | Empire trained you to remain calm in crisis situations like this.
Floyd |
Floyd | From somewhere below, you hear the hiss of steam as a pipe bursts.

Floyd |
Floyd | Thank you for playing Oxygen. This game uses standard Interactive
Floyd | Fiction conventions, and any commands unique to this game should be
Floyd | obvious to you when you need them.
Floyd |
Floyd | Some conversational commands you may find useful are:
Floyd |
Floyd | talk to [someone] - initiates a conversation
Floyd | ask [someone] about [something] - asks someone about a topic or
Floyd | thing
Floyd | tell [someone] about [ something] or tell [someone] that [
Floyd | something] - tells someone about a topic or thing
Floyd | (note: you must use the words "about" or "that" in the above phrases)
Floyd |
Floyd | If you are in a conversation, you could also abbreviate asking or
Floyd | telling about as a [something] or t [something].
Floyd | Topics will bring up a list of topics you can discuss. You can
Floyd | also answer yes or no if you are asked a question, or
Floyd | apologize.
Floyd |
Floyd | Oxygen makes use of sound, though it is not necessary to complete the
Floyd | game. Also, typing statusbar will switch the statusbar at the
Floyd | top of the screen off or on should you choose.

Floyd | [LINK]
Floyd ask [someone] about [something] - asks someone about a topic or
Floyd | thing
Floyd tell [someone] about [ something] or tell [someone] that [
Floyd | something] - tells someone about a topic or thing

Floyd |
Floyd | "Chief here. We're showing activity from the display console in

Floyd | like trouble. Readings from your console show a slow leak from the
Floyd | primary oxygen reserves. Zanders, we've got diagnostics but can't do
Floyd | anything about the leak from here. You'll need to use the console to
Floyd | re-route the oxygen into the forward reserve tank. If you don't, we'll
Floyd | be out of air well before the next deep space transport arrives. We're
Floyd | sending a repair crew to the area, but do what you can."
Floyd |
Floyd | You turn to the now functioning console. The data does confirm a slow
Floyd | leak. This isn't your area of expertise (life support being one of the
Floyd | few systems you don't know inside and out), but you think that
Floyd | initiating the required transfer should be relatively simple.
Floyd | Inserting an override card into one of the console slots should begin
Floyd | moving the oxygen into the forward tank. It would take over 500 zPsi
Floyd | units of oxygen to save the entire station, but since the striking
Floyd | miners are sealed in the rear of the station, you should need far less
Floyd | than that to save the fore section.
Floyd |
Floyd | As for the strikers, they're gonna be outta luck. Their rear oxygen
Floyd | reserve is as empty as the forward reserve that you now depend on...

Floyd |
Floyd | The console indicates the status of the oxygen storage and transfer
Floyd | system. Oxygen can be moved from the main storage tank into either the
Floyd | forward or the aft storage tanks depending on the station's needs.
Floyd | Numbers at the top of the console indicate the amount of oxygen stored
Floyd | in the main tank, fore and aft tanks, and any overrides that change
Floyd | how oxygen is to be distributed.
Floyd |
Floyd | Beside the main display are two small slots. The left slot is labeled

Floyd |
Floyd | Time passes.
Floyd |
Floyd | You hear a whoosh as a burst of oxygen is funneled through nearby
Floyd | pipes.
Floyd |
Floyd | The sound of gas rushing through the transfer lines comes to a sudden
Floyd | stop and you hear only the hissing of the steampipe below you. In a
Floyd | moment, the hissing stops as well and you are left in silence. You
Floyd | look down the jefferies tube. There, just a few feet below and resting
Floyd | conveniently on a ledge, is your radio. It must have turned off
Floyd | accidentally when it was thrown around in the gravity shift. You reach
Floyd | down to pick up your radio and turn it back on.
Floyd |
Floyd | "...Chief, now that the oxygen has been re-routed I suggest
Floyd | sealing off the entire A-deck, including the conduit tunnels. We can't
Floyd | take any risks with the rebels."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Agreed. Zanders, get out of there and report to mechanics
Floyd | immediately."
Floyd |
Floyd | The way back to the fore section and mechanics is down the Jefferies
Floyd | tube, which is now clear. You look behind you - the southern tunnel
Floyd | leads to the aft section, and if you wished you could probably use
Floyd | your expertise to sneak into that section before the chief seals off
Floyd | the last remaining route there. Of course the Captain wouldn't be too
Floyd | happy about that.
Floyd |
Floyd | "I guess that's it then," the injured man sighs. "Time for you to go
Floyd | back to your side, and I'll just crawl down the hall back to the rest
Floyd | of us turncoats...I doubt we'll find another route across the station,
Floyd | so we'll be sealed off for good this time."
Floyd |
Floyd | You know for sure he'll never make it down the corridor before the
Floyd | entire deck is sealed off, and he'll likely be sucked out into space.
Floyd | On the other hand, he'll never make it all the way down the jefferies
Floyd | tube with that leg.
Floyd |
Floyd | Two choices surface in your mind. You can leave the injured man in the
Floyd | conduit and save yourself by going down or you can go
Floyd | south, helping him make it to the aft section of the ship. You're
Floyd | pretty sure you can make it down the tube in time, but you're not so
Floyd | sure about the southern tunnel.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says (to Floyd), "south"
Floyd | >
Floyd | > SOUTH
Floyd |
Floyd | "I'm not leaving you here," you tell the injured man. "Come on!"
Floyd |
Floyd | You help him up and the both of you stumble down the tunnel, escaping
Floyd | not a minute too soon. The A-deck hatches close behind you, completely
Floyd | sealing off the section conduits. There's no turning back now. You
Floyd | take a few more corridors, take your time helping the injured man down
Floyd | a jefferies tube (you hope you never see the inside of another
Floyd | jefferies tube again), and finally through a partially hidden
Floyd | hatchway. After hacking open a final set of pressure sealed doors, you
Floyd | reach the main aft corridor. Now it's time to find out what the rebels
Floyd | think of their new visitor...

Floyd | (press any key to continue)
Binder pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd ]
Floyd |
Floyd | Eleanor Proust, de facto leader of the miners, shakes your hand. "It
Floyd | was courageous of you to come here. You had no idea how we would react
Floyd | - and you don't know what your commanders will do once they find out
Floyd | you've defected to our side. Not that it matters - you saved enough
Floyd | oxygen for the fore section, but you forgot about us. So all the
Floyd | Captain has to do - all he will do, I guarantee you - is wait. But,
Floyd | what's done is done. Make your time with us good, won't you? While it
Floyd | lasts. I believe Andre wants to thank you as well. He's in the
Floyd | recovery room with his daughters. They're beautiful."
