ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Vanishing Conjurer by Marshal Tenner Winter
As played on ifMUD on August 25, 2013

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Vanishing Conjurer written by Marshal Tenner Winter. The Vanishing Conjurer was released as part of the 2013 IntroComp, in which it took third place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | things were Vaudeville, of course-" he begins."Better yet, start from
Floyd | sometime more recent." you say, rubbing your temples.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh, yes, of course. Well, by now, I've got a lot of great acts on me
Floyd | books, if I do say so meself. But my problem is with one of them; a
Floyd | young man named Philip Leclair." he tells you.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "hm, perhaps I should hold back a bit since I've played this before."
MTW says, "on my end, its formatted badly, but im using a web browser"
Jacqueline says, "So, since this is my first time playing, and you're here, MTW, and the TRUE PRIZE of IntroComp is feedback, I'll just say, from the perspective of someone who has spent months and months in England (and I've conferred with my husband, who is British) (and we've both actually been in this exact pub) that you really don't dwell on how old stuff is in old pubs. Like, stuff in England is just old, and that's a common thing, so you just don't dwell on it."
Tigrita says (to floyd), "ask howard about philip"
Floyd | >
Floyd | > ASK HOWARD ABOUT PHILIP
Floyd |
Floyd | "Tell me about Leclair." you say.
Floyd |
Floyd | "He calls 'imself Leclair the Great professionally." Howard
Floyd | tells you, "He'll go far if handled right and he's got a knack for
Floyd | making old tricks look new. He even invents his own, good ones at
Floyd | that, with all this new apparatus and patter and everything."
MTW exclaims, "i appreciate any and all feedback, there's going to be a general re-write when i re-release. thanks!"
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd | that, with all this new apparatus and patter and everything.""And?"
Floyd | you ask.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well," he says, "end of last month, Philip came to my office,
Floyd | plum-excited he was. Said he had plans for a new trick. Showed me
Floyd | some sketches that I couldn't make heads nor tails of. He said it was
Floyd | going to bring a whole new meaning to what we call The
Floyd | Vanish."
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd | Vanish.""Wow." you say nonplussed.
Floyd |
Floyd | He continues, "You know, making a chap disappear into thin air?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Perturbed, you reply, "Yeah, I got it."
Tigrita pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd | Perturbed, you reply, "Yeah, I got it."He proceeds again, "So he comes
Floyd | to my office saying he's having problems with his new apparatus for
Floyd | this trick. Well, I'm no magician so I suggested he approach this new
Floyd | magic club who call themselves something like the Inner
Floyd | Brotherhood of Magicians. This brotherhood had sent me a letter
Floyd | to recommend themselves to my clients. So I reckon maybe they can
Floyd | help Philip with his predicament. Being a good lad, he did so, and
Floyd | was even invited to eventually join the club. I was hearing that
Floyd | things were going swimmingly with his new vanishing trick. But then
Floyd | something happened."
MTW says, "Jacq, you and Maga should go take pics of the place for me!!! lol"
Jacqueline says, "And I'm also not entirely sure about some of the language. Douchebag, what's the skinny, stuff like that. They may well date that far back, but there are ways to determine their origin and usage through time."
Tigrita pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd ] Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Pub London 1927
Floyd | something happened."You make a twirling motion with your finger,
Floyd | inviting him to go on with his story. He says, "Well, a couple weeks
Floyd | ago, Philip comes back to my office, right excited again, he was. He
Floyd | said he was on the verge of finding a method of, as he put it,
Floyd | revolutionizing stage magic as we know it."
Floyd |
Floyd | "And?" you ask. He says, "And here's the mystery, detective. It's
Floyd | quite ironic, really. But that was the last I saw of the lad. Philip
Floyd | Leclair has vanished off the face of the earth!"

maga says, "but I'm English and we visit the UK every few years"
MTW says, "but i found some use of anachronisms as funny, they only come from the detective. sort of like woody allen in Love & Death, he's just woody allen in revolutionary russia"
Binder arrives, full of funk, but no fun. maga says, "(Neal Stephenson also does this)"
DavidW says, "There's probably some antique English epithets out there to find. But I also imagine several sound as silly as 'rum pot in a hamper'."

Floyd | The Locked Room
Floyd | This is a large room that maybe was originally meant to be a master
Floyd | bedroom for this home, but now it is being used for storage.
Floyd |
Floyd | In the center of the room is a large crate. It is about as high as
Floyd | the ceiling and wider than you can stretch your arms.
Floyd |
Floyd | Leaning against the large crate is a crowbar.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is some sort of dark burn on the ceiling.

minghua says (to DavidW), "Yeah they are very detaily described for this game."
