The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Jacqueline hollers, "ClubFloyd begins in less than ten minutes (at half past the hour). We'll be playing Spiral, by Justin Morgan." * Doug has joined the channel.
Doug asks, "was this a comp entry?"
Jacqueline says, "Yes! And we have the author here with us this morning."
DavidW says, "I think so. Also one that I missed."
Jacqueline says, "(And BRB - gotta refill the egg nog. Presidential directive, and all that.)"

Jacqueline says, "Mmkay. Back. One more minute before half past. So, Baryon, the way this works is that we have this bot who facilitates the game, and any player can enter commands, though we don't want any hints or spoilers so it's probably best that you not suggest any commands until after we've decided we need one or we've finished the game and there's stuff we missed that you'd like us to see."
Jacqueline says, "All conversation about the game will take place here, on this channel."
Baryon says, "Yes, great. I should definitely come here more often..."
Jacqueline says, "There are some other etiquette things, but they mostly apply to players, so I don't think I'll bore you with those this morning."

Floyd | And then you hear something. The low, steady rumbling of a train. As
Floyd | your eyelids slowly peel back, you feel like you're swimming up to the
Floyd | surface of a deep, black ocean. For a while, the disorientation is
Floyd | overwhelming, and you can't think about anything. But once you start
Floyd | thinking, you can't stop.

Floyd | It's dark, and the only artificial light is flickering, but it doesn't
Floyd | take much light for you to know that you're in trouble. Most of your
Floyd | body is numb. Directly opposite you is a man, plastered with fear,
Floyd | gagged. His arms are tied to his sides, his legs bound together in
Floyd | three different places. The numbness gives way to pain, as though
Floyd | needles are shooting out of all your blood vessels and you start to
Floyd | feel more than just your pounding heart: the tight ropes digging into
Floyd | you, the rigid metal floor, the stale air, the gag over your mouth.

Floyd | You can see your legs stretched out in front of you, tied together at
Floyd | the ankles, shins and thighs with thick ropes that really seem to bite
Floyd | into your skin. Just looking at it makes you shuffle in discomfort,
Floyd | but it doesn't make it any better. In the dark light you can't tell if
Floyd | you're wearing blue jeans or black ones - you think black - but either
Floyd | way they're very dusty. You look down at your similarly hue-ambiguous
Floyd | sweater, which is also marked by tight ropes around your upper and
Floyd | lower arms. Your mouth is covered by a patch that is stuck right over
Floyd | your lips: you can only make muffled, incoherent groaning noises.

Floyd | You look around again. The carriage is small and is practically empty.
Floyd | On the floor in front of you is a sea of dead wasps - there's not a
Floyd | live one to be found. You look over at your only living companion,
Floyd | tied up and leaning against the wall opposite you. Your eyes meet, and
Floyd | you try to convey sympathy, and you try to read sympathy from his, but
Floyd | that wouldn't do either of you any good even if you could
Floyd | hide the fear. The light flickers off for a second, sending you
Floyd | temporarily into darkness.

Jacqueline says, "So, we're on the train, it would seem."

Floyd | Disgustingly, there are about a hundred dead things on the floor -
Floyd | concentrated in the centre of the carriage - bobbing up and down with
Floyd | the train's movement in a grotesque dance. They're bigger than wasps,
Floyd | and they're red, with menacing needles for stinging. It's a good thing
Floyd | they're all dead.

Floyd | You look over at your only companion. He's looking as battered as you
Floyd | feel, with disheveled black hair, a grimy face and crumpled clothes,
Floyd | dusty and discoloured. He's not agitated, or nervous, but you can just
Floyd | about see a forlorn, almost despairing expression if you catch his
Floyd | eyes at the right moment. Something about him is familiar, but you're
Floyd | damned if you know what it is.

Floyd | Your legs are tied together at the ankles, shins and thighs with thick
Floyd | ropes that really seem to bite into your skin. In the dark light you
Floyd | can't tell if you're wearing blue jeans or black ones - you think
Floyd | black - but either way they're very dusty. Further ropes bind your
Floyd | upper and lower arms, and you can feel your dry skin and lips where
Floyd | the gag is stuck over them.

Floyd | Panic is setting in. Breathing getting heavy, blood pumping faster and
Floyd | faster. Thoughts and possibilities, each more frightening than the
Floyd | last, are starting to bombard you, and frankly, you'd rather die and
Floyd | be free of it forever. Each dread is coming at you, like a spectre
Floyd | from the air that wants to wrap its cold hands around your brain and
Floyd | banish you to a place of endless torment.

Floyd | For a moment, everything is blank. Tabula rasa. You could be anyone -
Floyd | a terrorist, a psychopath, a drug addict, a prostitute, a mugger. But
Floyd | then memories flood in all at once, as if you'd asked to borrow a
Floyd | lighter and got your house set on fire instead. You're Helen Wright.
Floyd | You can picture the faces of your mum and dad and your older sister
Floyd | Mary in your house in London; you can see the bright white walls of
Floyd | that house - everything white and pristine, like a hospital; you can
Floyd | see yourself playing with dolls at the foot of your bed; you can see
Floyd | yourself telling Mary to leave you alone; you see the park, you're on
Floyd | the swings, you're down the slide, you're on your own, playing with
Floyd | the playground grass; you're at school, you're scribbling in your
Floyd | book, you're the last one out of the classroom, and the first one in.
Floyd | You're eight years old, and the memories are still coming...

Floyd | Faster and faster, your memories are coming back, and you can't keep
Floyd | up with them. Then, suddenly, they stop. The last one is just an
Floyd | ordinary day on the London Underground and you're going to lectures.
Floyd | How did you get from there to here? That can't be the end - that can't
Floyd | have been the last thing that happened. Unless perhaps some random
Floyd | madman came along, beat you up and locked you in here. But who would
Floyd | want to kidnap you? There's nothing special about you - far from it.

Baryon says, "I know - surely every game implements that one these days"
DavidW says, "There is more than this one room. I hope that's not a spoiler."
Zach arrives, ready to play with the toys. Jacqueline says, "There will be more than one room if we don't die, you mean."
DavidW says, "no comment"
Baryon says, "In my original design, this was going to be the only room. But this isn't the original design..."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "remember"

Floyd | There's a sudden clanging noise, and the room flashes momentarily red.
Floyd | Your heart rate goes up. Something's happening. The red light keeps
Floyd | flashing in a regular cycle, and two small vents opens on the wall,
Floyd | just little circular holes. There's the sound of rushing air, and you
Floyd | fear what might come out of those dark tubes. You feel a certain
Floyd | warmth in the air as it hits you, and a vile, acrid smell. It's
Floyd | certainly not the ventilation. Then the flashing light suddenly stops,
Floyd | the vent covers slide back into place, and the train rumbles on along
Floyd | as though nothing happened at all.

Floyd | When you look around again, the most striking thing is the floor:
Floyd | dozens of dead insects are scattered around it, and you can't see a
Floyd | single living one. What does that mean? That you've been here for
Floyd | ages? Or is there a fly trap? You try not to dwell on it, and look
Floyd | around the whole carriage. It's not big, and it doesn't take long to
Floyd | realise that there's nothing else here, except the other captive and
Floyd | the flickering light. The shadows are deep, oppressive. The noise of
Floyd | the train's movement is a dull but constant clanking. The air is
Floyd | stale.

Floyd | You try to think about what happened. But nothing is coming.
Floyd | Literally, nothing. And who is that over there?
Floyd |
Floyd | Since it doesn't seem like anything is happening, you wonder if it
Floyd | might be OK to get some sleep.

Floyd | Who are you? The question bounces around in your mind for a moment,
Floyd | with no answer forthcoming. But then it's as though someone opens a
Floyd | tap, and things start trickling back. Your name is Ross. You can see
Floyd | your flat in London, your mum and dad, arguing, doors slamming,
Floyd | crumpled pieces of paper on the floor. There's your brother, hitting
Floyd | and kicking you, and you trying to fight back. You can see yourself,
Floyd | six or seven years old, looking at a large rash, going to the
Floyd | hospital. But then the memories stop, and you feel drained. For God's
Floyd | sake, why is this so hard to remember? It's there, and it's coming
Floyd | back, but it's just so much effort to get it.

Floyd | As your mind begins to wake up, thoughts and possibilities start
Floyd | whirling around, bombarding and confusing you. Your limbs feel so
Floyd | stiff, but are slowly getting better.

Floyd | It really is as bad as it feels. Your arms are bound to your sides
Floyd | with one rope that crosses your chest and one over the stomach, and
Floyd | both are hurting like hell as they dig into your skin through your
Floyd | shirt. You wouldn't rate your chances of being able to wriggle free,
Floyd | and you don't think you could even move anywhere: three more ropes are
Floyd | bound tightly around your ankles, shins and thighs. The worst thing,
Floyd | though, is the thick tape covering your mouth. If it ever does come
Floyd | off, it'll probably rip off your lips with it.

Floyd | She looks frightened, of course. Her eyes are wide and she's looking
Floyd | around everywhere, presumably trying to see a way out. There's
Floyd | something familiar about her, but you don't know what it is.
Floyd | She's quite tall. Very, very pale. Shoulder-length brown hair. You get
Floyd | the impression that it's only as tangled as it is because of the
Floyd | situation - knocked out, gagged, tied up and thrown into this place.
Floyd | You flinch just thinking about it. You hope this isn't your fault. You
Floyd | don't know why it would be.

Floyd | You're feeling quite sleepy.

Floyd | You're not getting anywhere by being awake, so you don't think it will
Floyd | matter to try getting some sleep. It's hardly comfortable, but it
Floyd | isn't noisy - in fact it's far quieter than London. You push yourself
Floyd | over onto your side and shut your eyes.
Jacqueline says, "Wonder if that's the gas or just trying to remember or we're just the sort that gets sleepy when things seem scary."
Doug says (to Floyd), "wake"

Floyd | The beast hisses. Something rips through you, wrenching out your soul,
Floyd | which floats through the vacuum of space to become part of the
Floyd | machine. There's the Earth, with a whirlwind of nature being sucked
Floyd | into one end of the machine, and there's a big tube running along the
Floyd | top of it, until it gets to the beast at the other end. The beast
Floyd | snarls. It wants more, and then more still, and then more and more,
Floyd | and the machine has to go faster and faster. It has your soul now too.
Floyd | You're being pulled in towards the machine, and you don't want to go
Floyd | there, you don't want to! The beast roars.

Floyd | You're on a ledge jutting out from the machine, a metal platform. You
Floyd | get a real sense of the enormity of the machine from this perspective,
Floyd | as it stretches as far as you can see in both directions. The Earth
Floyd | and the beast themselves are just out of sight.

Floyd | There's an unusual archway in the east wall, which is doing something
Floyd | to the light so that you can't see through it.
Floyd |
Floyd | You're not going to sell yourself to the machine. You've got to get
Floyd | your soul back.

Floyd | The archway in the east wall is an unusual shape, and is distorting
Floyd | the light so much that you can't see through it. The edges are very
Floyd | clearly defined though, so that the whole thing looks a bit like a
Floyd | sticker.

Floyd | Suddenly the vision disappears as you shoot into a cloud. The cage
Floyd | keeps on moving up, and you see the clouds changing colour: the first
Floyd | ones red and fiery, the next ones gradually cooler, whiter, bluer.

Floyd | shapes, but it's mostly just a kind of tangled mush. Bits of it escape

Floyd | pulsing mechanisms and gizmos. A trapdoor in the floor leads into
Floyd | darkness via a ladder. Emanating from it is a symphony of slicing,
Floyd | cutting and crashing sounds, and there's a machine up here that's
Floyd | buzzing and shaking in time with it.

Jacqueline says, "No, doesn't look like it."
Doug asks, "anyway, shall we pause?"
Jacqueline says, "But is the column solid? Or can we put things in it to give them to Helen, or is it just the pipe that does that."
Baryon says, "It's just the pipe that does that"
Jacqueline says, "We could pause, I guess. Though with Baryon several hours ahead of us, he may have to wait for the gripping conclusion via transcript."
Jacqueline says, "I have to work out, and I have to visit a friend in the hospital."
Jacqueline says, "So I'm not sure what my schedule will be."
Doug says, "I should get lunch,"
Baryon asks, "When did you want to continue?"
Jacqueline says, "But if you and David pick it back up later I would be fine with that. I'll leave the transcript log going."
Jacqueline says (to Baryon), "I think we were thinking of resuming fluidly when David returned. That might only be half an hour to an hour, or it might be tomorrow. Not exactly precise, I realize. Unless we want to set a time. I'd be fine with playing tomorrow at the same time."
Doug says, "I'm fine waiting for DavidW, or whenever."
Baryon says, "OK, I don't mind. Sorry the game wasn't comp length"
Jacqueline says, "No worries - it's an interesting dynamic, and I've been wanting more dream games."
Jacqueline asks, "Why don't we just say same time tomorrow, Doug, if you're off of work and around and such?"
Doug says, "I think we're unstuck, for now"
Doug says, "I won't be around tomorrow until 3 or 4. having a late lunch with family"
Doug says, "but you can play wthout me, of course."
Jacqueline says, "Okay, well, I will leave the transcript running. If you and David are both on, feel free to continue. I may be away quite a bit today."
Doug says, "okey doke. seeya."
Jacqueline says (to Baryon), "I'll let you know when the transcript gets posted, and of course feel free to leave your mudwindow open and see if they pick it back up."
Baryon says, "Yeah, OK. Thanks Jacqueline"
Jacqueline asks, "Has it been at all interesting to watch other people play it in real time?"
Baryon exclaims, "Yes, it's been amazing!"
Jacqueline says, "Well, there's that, at least. Yay. Thanks, Baryon."
Baryon says, "See you"

Miseri arrives, full of fun and funk. Miseri says, "Aw, I missed Justin Morgan? I wanted to give him the third degree on What Does It All Mean."

DavidW asks, "So, I'm awake again. (It's 8pm now.) How did it go?"
Doug says (to DavidW), "good morning!"
Doug says, "we played a little more, then decided to pause"
Jacqueline says, "We broke it off not long after you went to lie down."
Amanda asks, "what are you guys up to right now?"
Doug says, "I just ordered dinner, but I'd be up for resuming after 30 mins or so"
Jacqueline says, "I was about to play something, but the transcript is still going and I would be watching."
Jacqueline says, "I wasn't contributing too much, but am interested in where it goes."
Amanda says, "I heard ya'll were doin the comp games"
Jacqueline says, "Oh, yeah. We were doing Spiral."
DavidW says, "I was hoping that once you guys figured out how to pass objects between the PCs that the rest of the game would be a lot easier."
Jacqueline says, "Oh, we really didn't play much longer."
Jacqueline says, "Like, at all."
Amanda says, "Oh, Spiral is an interesting one"
DavidW says, "hi Amanda"
Jacqueline asks, "Amanda, have you finished it?"
Jacqueline says, "Spiral, I mean."
Amanda says, "I have! I was in the comp, so, I won't spoil anything"
Amanda says, "Though I will say, without spoiling, that I found the ending moves a little buggy"
Jacqueline says, "Okay. Yeah, we don't want spoilers... though I can't say as I think we won't eventually want them. . o O (How's that for crazy sentence construction?)"
Amanda exclaims, "Makes sense!"
Amanda says, "I need to get out a post-comp release of my buggy game"
Doug says, "me too! :("
DavidW says, "Sorry that I had to crash, but I really did fall asleep shortly after I stopped talking."
Ellison says (to DW), "I think the point is, while you sleep, there's supposed to be another person trying to solve things (or is it vice versa?)"
DavidW asks (of Ellison), "uh, everyone should be trying to solve things, no?"
Jacqueline says, "heh"
Jacqueline says, "Well, we didn't want him to MISS ANYTHING"
Ellison says (to DavidW), "I was trying to make a joke about the game mechanics"

Jacqueline narrows her eyes. "... but ... we're helpless and self-doubting (either player, take your pick)."

DavidW says, "uh, hope people won't be too upset with me, but I continued Spiral on my own last night."
Jacqueline asks, "How did it go for you? Did you finish, David?"
DavidW says, "I finished, but I got one of four unsatisfactory endings. The game said there's two satisfactory endings."
DavidW says, "I know how to acquire all 7 soul parts for both PCs."
Zach says, "How was the session? I ended up being too busy to follow or play."
DavidW says, "The session was good until the point I had to lie down because of exhaustion."
Zach says, "No wonder you've been so hungry."
DavidW says, "I was quite pleased that the mechanic of exchanging items was discovered just before that point, because I was sure that was a major breakthrough."
Baryon says, "The item-exchanging mechanic has been rightly criticised..."
DavidW says, "oh? I rather liked that part. It just took ages to discover it."
Baryon says, "Because it feels like destroying the items"
Baryon says, "It was hinted, but still"
DavidW says, "hm. Yes, I can see that being confusing for some players."
DavidW says, "IF players are trained to be hoarders and kleptos. They don't like destroying their hard-won booty, it's true."
DavidW says, "Anyway, once item exchange was possible, it wasn't too difficult to find most of the soul parts. I was a bit stuck getting into the church, but that's because I forgot something discovered much earlier."
DavidW says, "And then some of the game rules, uh, changed, so I'm still puzzling out the endgame, thinking of possible options."
Jacqueline says, "Well, I suspect I should probably just wrap up the transcript as is, as we probably won't continue it, but that happens from time to time - less because of the game's quality than just because of its length (and CF always goes through games far slower than a single person generally would)."
Baryon says, "OK, that's all fine"
Baryon says (to DavidW), "Finding a successful ending shouldn't be too hard now, if you wanted to"
Jacqueline says, "So I guess I should say, while you're here, that I thought the dream sequences were very well done. Perhaps a bit more randomization on dialog and bodies rolling by, but really well done."
DavidW says, "I've updated my maps and added rough notes: [LINK]"

Jacqueline asks, "For the CF transcript, is that a temp link, or one of those 'tmp' links that will stay there for ever?"
DavidW says, "That's temporary. I'll want to rename it to spira12.html later."

Baryon says, "It was the only I6 game in the comp"
Baryon says, "I tried to learn I7 but I didn't like it"
Jacqueline says, "I used to code in I6, but don't go back to it very much at all these days..."
Jacqueline says, "Ah, okay. Fair enough."
Baryon says, "It's funny I seem to be the only one who hasn't switched to I7"
Jacqueline says, "I don't think you're entirely alone."
Jacqueline says, "For some people it just feels like too big a deviation from code to still be code even though it's very much code."
Baryon says, "That's my feeling exactly"
Jacqueline says, "I don't know if that's your reason for not liking it, but I've -- well there you go."
Jacqueline says, "heh"
DavidW says, "I7 is a different *type* of code. It took me ages to figure out how to think that way for it. But it does get easier over time."
Baryon asks (of DavidW), "Have you written games in it then?"
DavidW says, "Still, I6 has its good points too."
DavidW says (to Baryon), "uhhhh, I haven't written any new games in I7, but I did port an ADRIFT game to I7."
Baryon says, "OK"
DavidW says, "And I have some WIPs that I'm also porting from I6 to I7."
Baryon says, "I7 has some attractive features, for sure"
DavidW says, "I suspect two of the pushes behind I7 was to get rid of parse_name and objectloop from the syntax."
zarf says, "I know Emily specifically asked Graham to never have to write a parse_name again"
DavidW says, "yes, I remember Emily saying that very thing once."
Baryon says, "I can certainly appreciate that"
zarf says, "(unfortunately we occasionally get coding questions to which the answer is 'well, you could do that in I6 by writing a parse_name routine, but not in I7'"
Baryon says, "Oh, that's interesting"
DavidW says, "Although I have to say, I found parse_name and your (zarf's) parse_name examples extremely helpful in writing 69,105 Keys."
DavidW says, "I wrote 69,105 Key in I6 because I didn't see how it could be written in I7. Emily suggested that a Before parsing the player's command rule could be a way I could've written it in I7."
zarf says, "If I had to write it in I7, I'd write an I6 function and manually change the objects' parse_name routine to that address at startup time."
DavidW says, "heh. Some might call that cheating, but of course all is fair behind the curtain."
zarf says, "the first rule of IF coding is: get it to do what you need and move on."
DavidW says, "mmhm. Wise words."
