ClubFloyd Transcript:
For A Change by Dan Schmidt

As played on ifMUD on August 20, 2011

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of For A Change, written by Dan Schmidt. For A Change was released as part of the 1999 Interactive Fiction Competition, where it took second place. It was nominated for Xyzzies for Best Game, Best Individual Puzzle, and Best Setting, and won a Xyzzy for Best Writing. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | Under the High Wall (on the resting)
Floyd | Sweetness fills the shade of the High Wall to your east. Under this
Floyd | sweetness lies a small expanse of fod. A mobile releases mildly to the
Floyd | west; far in that direction a tower proudly plants itself, while the
Floyd | ground rises more slowly to the south and relaxes to the north.
Floyd |
Floyd | Spread on the resting is a guidebook.
Floyd |
Floyd | Sleep gradually departs from your eyes. A small stone has been
Floyd | insinuated into your hand.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "All right."
genericgeekgirl exclaims, "Yay, a rock!"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x rock"
Floyd | It is a small smooth stone, the size of a small gland, a size to roll
Floyd | between your fingertips, nothing more than a pebble.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | You are faded and silent.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x guidebook"
Floyd | This tattered book describes itself quietly but firmly as an
Floyd | indispensable guide to the plain.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "take guidebook"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x sweetness"
Floyd | The sweetness slowly shortens and expands.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x fod"
Floyd | The fod, shaded and unseeded, has neither light nor life.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x mobile"
Floyd | The mobile is made of dirt and twine and extends along the ground,
Floyd | beckoning.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take mobile"
Floyd | The mobile is to be traversed, rather than to be held.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take fod"
Floyd | The fod is, and remains, where it is.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "x shade"
Floyd | That is either not here or not anywhere.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "read guidebook"
Floyd | The guidebook inflates itself with numerous definitions.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says (to floyd), "look up fod in the guidebook"
Floyd | 'FOD is the substance of earth.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "look up mobile in guidebook"
Floyd | 'The MOBILE is laid for the provision of movement with additional
Floyd | ease.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x tower"
Floyd | The tower, immense anywhere else, is nothing to the High Wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up tower in guidebook"
Floyd | 'The TOWER of the plain admits a view of all that may be seen. Our
Floyd | standard flies proudly from its height.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "look up sun in guidebook"
Floyd | 'The fabled SUN, it is said, will rise in our lifetime to bring
Floyd | brightness and warmth, though to date it has remained hidden.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "look up rock in guidebook"
Floyd | That is no subject.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says, "Hmm."
eu says (to Floyd), "look up sweetness in guidebook"
Floyd | That is no subject.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "darn"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up high wall in guidebook"
Floyd | 'The HIGH WALL divides the sunrise from its setting, and ensures the
Floyd | shade of the plain.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up guidebook in guidebook"
Floyd | 'This GUIDEBOOK explicates the statements of the plain. It may be
Floyd | consulted and carried. No finer guidebook can be found within reach.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl asks, "pick a direction?"
eu says, "Sure."
genericgeekgirl asks, "east?"
eu says, "Sure."
genericgeekgirl says, "to the sweet sweetness"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd | The resting must first be departed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x resting"
Floyd | The resting sits on five wooden legs and slopes gradually.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "depart resting"
Floyd | The resting sighs at your departure.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "look up resting in guidebook"
Floyd | 'The RESTING is a device made for that selfsame purpose.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "sigh"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says, "n, s, w"
genericgeekgirl asks, "we can't enter the shade?"
genericgeekgirl asks, "All right. West?"
eu says, "Okay."
Rotonoto says, "Everything this side of the wall is in the shade."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd |
Floyd | In the Shade
Floyd | The land increases towards your head to the south, and decreases away
Floyd | from your feet to the north. Mobiles lead accordingly in both
Floyd | directions. The High Wall may also be approached to the east. A long
Floyd | walk to the west is a tower, dwarfing your form, and dwarfed in turn
Floyd | by the wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | It is clear, after a time, that all things are shaded, everywhere.
Floyd | Thus the Wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | Inscribed on the brown grass is a toolman.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x toolman"
Floyd | The toolman is bright and misty. Thoughts and uses hang from his
Floyd | shoulders like birds.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up toolman in guidebook"
Floyd | 'The TOOLMAN is the grower and keeper of tools. He takes with a hand
Floyd | and likewise provides.'
Floyd |
Floyd | The toolman smiles softly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x thoughts"
Floyd | The thoughts and uses of the toolman glimmer in the shade.
Floyd |
Floyd | The toolman smiles softly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "talk to toolman"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "toolman, hello"
Floyd | The toolman understands.
Floyd |
Floyd | The toolman jingles in the breeze.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "ask toolman about thoughts"
Floyd | The toolman shakes his head.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "ask toolman about uses"
Floyd | The toolman shakes his head.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "toolman, tell me about thoughts"
Floyd | The toolman expresses a soothing regret.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "give rock to toolman"
Floyd | The toolman gently misunderstands.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | In hand:
Floyd | a guidebook (loquacious and proud)
Floyd | a small stone (humble and true)
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "show stone to toolman"
Floyd | The toolman is unmoved.
Floyd |
Floyd | The toolman jingles in the breeze.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "punch toolman"
Floyd | You restrain from such an action.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu asks, "Direction, I guess?"
eu asks, "Shall we continue west?"
genericgeekgirl says, "Sure"
eu says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd |
Floyd | Before the Tower
Floyd | A stone tower rises high and west above you, surrounded by a ring of
Floyd | stamped dirt. An archway faces the wall, strangely small compared to
Floyd | the tower's bulk; one must almost duck to transcend it. A plaque is
Floyd | set above the archway, approaching its size.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x plaque"
Floyd | Faded but surviving, the words TO OBSERVE lie on the plaque.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "observe"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x dirt"
Floyd | It lies below, and dreams of the sky.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x archway"
Floyd | That is either not here or not anywhere.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu asks, "Shall we enter the tower?"
genericgeekgirl says, "Sure"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd |
Floyd | Base of Tower
Floyd | The inside of the tower is completely void, nothing remaining but a
Floyd | long spiral staircase rising through the ceiling far above. The plain
Floyd | awaits to the east.
Floyd |
Floyd | A few scraps of wood lie without pride on the floor, all that remains
Floyd | of the original construction.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x wood"
Floyd | Potential and kinetic energy both lost forever, these timbers look
Floyd | helplessly upon the heights.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take wood"
Floyd | The wood is too heavy to move from its final place.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl asks, "Up?"
eu nods.
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "up"
Floyd |
Floyd | Halfway Up Tower
Floyd | When viewed, as now, from four stories above the ground and an equal
Floyd | distance from the top of the tower, these stairs are the whole of the
Floyd | universe. Far above, they penetrate an opening in the stone ceiling.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "up"
Floyd |
Floyd | Observation Room
Floyd | For an observation room, the view disappoints; it is provided only by
Floyd | four small windows, perhaps two feet by two, long bare of glass, one
Floyd | in each of four directions. A slight breeze is redolent of altitude.
Floyd | An abandoned flagpole vainly gestures outward beneath the southern
Floyd | opening. Stairs descend from the bare stone floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | A glass-encased model landscape squats on the floor near the east
Floyd | window.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x model"
Floyd | The model is the size of a small desk. Spread across its top is the
Floyd | landscape you have traversed, down to the tiniest detail, including,
Floyd | of course, this tower. The structure is set flush against the east
Floyd | wall of this room so that the wall of the room functions as the High
Floyd | Wall. The scene is covered by a pane of glass.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x glass"
Floyd | The pane of glass covers the landscape at a modest height.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x north window"
Floyd | The window describes the wilds to the north, free of mobile and
Floyd | structure. Even there, with no elements to protect, the High Wall
Floyd | holds.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x south window"
Floyd | The window describes the hills of the south. Blue with silence and
Floyd | age, they straddle the ground where once they sought the sky. Just
Floyd | below the window, a flagpole extends from the tower.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x flagpole"
Floyd | It extends perhaps ten feet from the tower, and is long bare of any
Floyd | clothing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up flagpole in guidebook"
Floyd | That is no subject.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x east window"
Floyd | The window describes the High Wall of the east. Its bulk impresses
Floyd | even more from a location of altitude itself. The plain maintains
Floyd | itself before the High Wall, cowering beneath its span.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x west window"
Floyd | The window describes the desert to the west. The brown is dark to the
Floyd | edge of your sight, covered to all directions by the shade that
Floyd | extends without cease.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x tower"
Floyd | The tower is one of the few landmarks visible in the model. For all
Floyd | you know, you are inside it as well.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says, "Hint alert."
eu says (to Floyd), "take model"
Floyd | The model is, and remains, where it is.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "break glass"
Floyd | The glass resists all force.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up model in guidebook"
Floyd | That is no subject.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "can we reach the flagpole? "Why?" "Why not?""
genericgeekgirl says, "More to the point, can I try, and quickly undo if I kill us"
eu says, "Sure. I doubt that you will kill us."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "s"
Floyd | You'll need to drop whatever you're carrying before you can crawl out
Floyd | on the flagpole.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | In hand:
Floyd | a guidebook (loquacious and proud)
Floyd | a small stone (humble and true)

Rotonoto says, "It's safe."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "drop all"
Floyd | guidebook: Dropped.
Floyd | small stone: Dropped.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "s"
Floyd | You force yourself through the small window and crawl out onto the
Floyd | flagpole.
Floyd |
Floyd | On the Flagpole (clinging to the flagpole)
Floyd | The whole of the land is visible from here, though you are in no
Floyd | position to appreciate it. The tower deepens far below you, and the
Floyd | High Wall looms off to the east.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x flagpole"
Floyd | It extends perhaps ten feet from the tower, and is long bare of any
Floyd | clothing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "up"
Floyd | Movement fails in that direction.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "down"
Floyd | That would be suicide.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | With relief, you back up through the window.

Floyd |
Floyd | You can also see a small stone and a guidebook here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take all"
Floyd | small stone: Taken.
Floyd | guidebook: Taken.
Floyd | model: The model is, and remains, where it is.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "push model"
Floyd | It is fixed in place.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "All right."
eu asks, "Down and explore?"

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "ask toolman about tools"
Floyd | The toolman beams with pride.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu asks, "Any way sounds fine to me. How about north?"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |
Floyd | By the Hole
Floyd | By the mobile south, a rounded hole, five times as wide as you are
Floyd | tall, deepens through the earth. Its dark is deeper than that around
Floyd | you. The east is also passable.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x hole"
Floyd | The hole funnels thinly. Far below crouches a narrow pool, in which
Floyd | something slowly circles.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x something"
Floyd | That is either not here or not anywhere.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x pool"
Floyd | It lurks far below. Moving deliberately through it is a handle.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x handle"

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take handle"

Floyd | Before the Cube
Floyd | The wall to your east continues to gain out of sight. To your north is
Floyd | a massive transparent cube, perhaps five of your heights on each side.
Floyd | Retreats lie west and south.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says, "Er, sure."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "lookup cube in guidebook"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up cube in guidebook"
Floyd | 'It portends poorly to extend a CUBE by other than artifical means; it
Floyd | must be constructed deliberately if at all.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x cube"
Floyd | The cube is featureless in all respects. There appears to be something

Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x cube"
Floyd | The cube is featureless in all respects. There appears to be something
Floyd | small on the ground inside, perhaps a manner of cup.
Floyd |
Floyd | A shower of crystal clatters down on the cube and the dirt around you.
Floyd | Shards shoot past your face and embed themselves in the ground.
Floyd |

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x shards"

Floyd | sweetness lies a small expanse of fod. A mobile releases mildly to the
Floyd | west; far in that direction a tower proudly plants itself, while the
Floyd | ground rises more slowly to the south and relaxes to the north.

genericgeekgirl says, "south again"
eu nods.

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x spinster"

Floyd |
Floyd | Outside Cave
Floyd | The mobile from the north ends as the land's slope increases too
Floyd | greatly. Dirt glistens blue. To the south, amid the land, a way opens
Floyd | into darkness, while more ground lies to the east.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x dirt"
Floyd | Void of even grass, the blue of the underworld pokes through.

Floyd | Inside the Cave
Floyd | A dark volume, curried from the surrounding stone, fills your eyes and
Floyd | ears. To the north a passing opens into dimness; from further inside,
Floyd | to the east, a slight glow weakly straggles into the room.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto asks, "It's not a very good guidebook, is it?"
genericgeekgirl says, "haha"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x glow"

Floyd | Lantern Room
Floyd | This subsection of the inset brightens and flickers. The shadows
Floyd | belong to the air more than you do, it seems. They walk the cordstone
Floyd | walls; they move and excite. The shadows look to a wall, to bars in
Floyd | the wall, and the songlantern behind them. Further in is east, further
Floyd | out is west, and a slope obtains up to the south.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Floyd | A stone tower rises high and west above you, surrounded by a ring of
Floyd | stamped dirt. An archway faces the wall, strangely small compared to
Floyd | the tower's bulk; one must almost duck to transcend it. A plaque is
Floyd | set above the archway, approaching its size.

Floyd |
Floyd | A stream of water rushes swiftly to the north.
Floyd |
Floyd | Inscribed on the brown grass is a toolman.

Floyd | By the Hole
Floyd | By the mobile south, a rounded hole, five times as wide as you are
Floyd | tall, deepens through the earth. Its dark is deeper than that around
Floyd | you. The east is also passable.
Floyd |
Floyd | A stream of water flows in from the south, filling the hole with a
Floyd | pool.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Floyd | You now see what fell outside the window; a boulder has smashed
Floyd | through much of the cube.
Floyd |
Floyd | Before the Cube
Floyd | The wall to your east continues to gain out of sight. To your north is
Floyd | what remains of a massive transparent cube, perhaps five of your
Floyd | heights on each side.
Floyd |
Floyd | A large boulder squats on one corner of the cube's remains.
Floyd |
Floyd | The ground is covered with glass dust and shards, threatening your
Floyd | footing.

Floyd | In the Cube
Floyd | The land, free of its former boundaries, is bare, save for the perfect
Floyd | square of grass, untrod for years until now, formerly within the
Floyd | constraints of its walls.
Floyd |
Floyd | A wooden cup broods upon the grass.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x cup"
Floyd | In the cup is a lie establisher.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take cup"
Floyd | The cup is fastened to the earth.

Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up lie establisher in cup"

Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "take establisher"
Floyd | The cup reluctantly yields the lie establisher.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "look up lie establisher in guidebook"
cyberskunk says, "yay. now we can make the water float"
Floyd | 'The LIE ESTABLISHER is a device utilized to enhance and fix the
Floyd | untrue. When squeezed, it sustains all immediate lies.'
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says, "Huh."
eu asks, "Were those words portable?"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x lie establisher"
Floyd | It is remarkably like a lemon in every respect.
Floyd |

Rotonoto says, "Skunk has it right."
genericgeekgirl asks, "Back to the cave?"
eu says, "Sure, let us investigate this lie."

Floyd | Under the High Wall
Floyd | Sweetness fills the shade of the High Wall to your east. Under this
Floyd | sweetness lies a small expanse of fod. A mobile releases mildly to the
Floyd | west; far in that direction a tower proudly plants itself, while the
Floyd | ground rises more slowly to the south and relaxes to the north.
Floyd |
Floyd | Almost touching the High Wall is a resting, firm and soft.

Floyd | Outside Cave
Floyd | The mobile from the north ends as the land's slope increases too

Floyd | A stream of water rushes swiftly to the north.

Floyd | Inside the Cave
Floyd | A dark volume, curried from the surrounding stone, fills your eyes and
Floyd | ears. To the north a passing opens into dimness; from further inside,
Floyd | to the east, a slight glow weakly straggles into the room.
Floyd |
Floyd | A cold knee-deep stream rushes out to the north.

Floyd | A cold knee-deep stream rushes to the west.

Floyd | End Of Passage
Floyd | A cylinder heightens out of sight, a steady stream of water descending
Floyd | it and splashing about your knees.
Floyd |
Floyd | Gray words hang lifelessly in the air.

Floyd | >
cyberskunk asks, "whats a resting?" eu says (to cyberskunk), "It's the bed we woke up on."

genericgeekgirl asks, "squeeze the lemon?"
eu says, "Sure."
Rotonoto says, "Do it."
eu says, "I'm not sure what purpose it will serve yet, though."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "squeeze lemon"
Floyd | You squeeze the lie enhancer. The dim words slowly waken and glow. For
Floyd | one moment the water is still. Then it heeds the words and floods up
Floyd | the tube, taking you with it.
Floyd |
Floyd | In The Cylinder
Floyd | Bouncing upon a spume of water, you can make out little of the scene
Floyd | around you. A hollow cylinder rises immensely far, a pinprick of light
Floyd | staring from its end.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says, "Oh."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "z"
Floyd | Time passes.
Floyd |
Floyd | You are buffeted upward for an eternity, rising at an unimaginable
Floyd | speed toward a spot of light at the top of the cylinder. You lose
Floyd | consciousness and regain it after an unknown delay.
Floyd |
Floyd | Top Of Cylinder
Floyd | You bob at the top of a hollow cylindrical column with walls of fitted
Floyd | stone, filled almost to the top with water, clean and cold. A ladder
Floyd | ascends from the water's height to a bright opening perhaps twenty
Floyd | feet directly overhead. Below water level is fastened a narrow opening
Floyd | in the east wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl asks, "up?"
Rotonoto says, "Good time to save."
eu clears the save counter.
eu says (to Floyd), "SAVE"
eu says (to Floyd), "cf1"
Floyd | Enter saved game to store: Ok.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "up"
Floyd | You hoist yourself up onto the ladder and climb up to the open air.
Floyd |
Floyd | As you ascend, the sunlight strikes you fully for the first time with
Floyd | almost physical force. You are stunned by warmth and light.
Floyd |
Floyd | On The High Wall
Floyd | The surface of the wall is as wide as you are tall, and unimaginably
Floyd | high above the land to the west. The stones themselves fit each other
Floyd | perfectly, with no mortar between. It is unclear how they barricade
Floyd | the vast ocean to the east, an easy dive of perhaps twenty feet.
Floyd |
Floyd | The handlefish blinks in alarm.

Floyd | >

eu exclaims, "Down!"
genericgeekgirl asks, "I presume we want to blow up the wall? And let the sun in?"
Rotonoto says, "Yes."
cyberskunk says, ".floyd x fish"
Floyd | The handlefish is in obvious pain.
Floyd |
Floyd | The handlefish gulps with dismay.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says, "Oh. I thought we were going to put the songlantern by the model."
genericgeekgirl says, "It won't explode until we put it in water. It'll just suffer for a bit. I think."

eu says, "We've saved, so it doesn't hurt to try."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "throw fish in ocean"
Floyd | The handlefish protests silently as you toss it into the vast ocean.
Floyd | As it submerges, a plume of water extends towards the sun and
Floyd | relapses. Then there is a moment of loudness and shock.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a short trembling, as if the ground becomes slightly unsteady
Floyd | for a moment, but it passes.
Floyd |
Floyd | Looking down, you spy a trickle of water emerging from the west side
Floyd | of the wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x trickle"
Floyd | The trickle of water is steadily growing.
Floyd |
Floyd | A violent shock throws you to your knees. You clutch at the broad
Floyd | stones as best you can, releasing your possessions.
Floyd |
Floyd | The wall is falling.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "let's uh, get off this wall"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "d"
Floyd | Gravity is taking care of that.
Floyd |
Floyd | The entire wall slides down towards the land to the west. Water soaks
Floyd | you from behind. Ancient chunks of rock fly past you in all
Floyd | directions.
Floyd |
Floyd | Some great mass hits you in the back, knocking you into the rush of
Floyd | water.
Floyd |
Floyd | In The Water
Floyd | The world is a mad mixture of rocks, water, and too little air. Waves
Floyd | and stone madly buffet you about, as you periodically go under and
Floyd | resurface.
Floyd |
Floyd | During a brief period above the surface, you catch sight of a rock
Floyd | just by your head.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take rock"
Floyd | You clamber up out of the water onto the rock.
Floyd |
Floyd | Rocks and water thunder down on the plain, you atop them. Soon they
Floyd | will overtake the observation tower now looming in front of you.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x tower"
Floyd | The tower rushes at you from below.
Floyd |
Floyd | The roiling mass of stone and water overwhelms the tower. Its flagpole
Floyd | is just in front of you.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "grab flagpole"
Floyd | You reach out with one hand and barely grasp the flagpole, then manage
Floyd | to pull yourself up.
Floyd |
Floyd | On the Flagpole (clinging to the flagpole)
Floyd | Amidst the chaos around you, this flagpole and the tower to its north
Floyd | are the two things stationary. Just underneath you, huge chunks of
Floyd | stone whip past, unleashing a lifetime of energy.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "Wheee"
genericgeekgirl asks, "into the tower?"
eu says, "Sure."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | You crawl through the window.
Floyd |
Floyd | The model landscape lies on the ground, slightly askew and quickly
Floyd | filling with water.
Floyd |
Floyd | Water rushes in through the open window and up through the stairway.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x model"
Floyd | The model has been dislodged. Its cover has disappeared, and water and
Floyd | sand stream in from a chink in the east wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | Water rushes in through the open window and up through the stairway.
Floyd | It's now up to your knees.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take model"
Floyd | Stretching your arms to their limit, you groan and lift the model just
Floyd | off the floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | The ground shakes.

Floyd | >

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "dump water"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says (to Floyd), "empty model"
Floyd | You strain to upset the model and the flood therein. In response to
Floyd | your desperate lift, the entire tower in which you stand begins to
Floyd | tilt as well, ages of stone and rock sliding through the air with a
Floyd | sickening lack of reluctance. You slip across the newly displaced
Floyd | floor, its angle yawing further with each moment, barely retaining
Floyd | your grip. Water pours in without cease, all denial useless, from all
Floyd | portals, whether windows or stairs. Flung against a wall suddenly
Floyd | turned floor, you flicker, your world narrowing to nothing but your
Floyd | fingers, their hold on the model, on the world, as you meet the wall
Floyd | with a crack that engulfs your consciousness. Water rushes past you
Floyd | and the sky.

Floyd | "I'm not sure whether your language is
Floyd | deliberately VERY off-centre, or whether
Floyd | you are from a non-English speaking
Floyd | background." -- A beta tester
Floyd |
Floyd | I had wanted to write a game in a really odd environment for a while.
Floyd | Many of those ideas will have to wait for future games, but one that
Floyd | stuck with me was a vision of the player on top of an infinitely high
Floyd | wall, looking down at the world unimaginably far below. And then the
Floyd | wall begins to crumble...
Floyd |
Floyd | I didn't know how I wanted to present the world, or how to rationalize
Floyd | the introduction of the player character - who in these games usually
Floyd | has supposedly somehow come there from the real world - into it. Then
Floyd | I read a book called The Age of Wire and String, by Ben Marcus, and it
Floyd | blew me away. It used what was ostensibly precise language, but in a
Floyd | way that was very difficult to make sense of, and a glossary that just
Floyd | added to the confusion. I immediately wanted to write something with a
Floyd | similar feel, in which objects are described in terse languge that
Floyd | assumes the player character understands the terms used, though of
Floyd | course the player does not.
Floyd |
Floyd | I ended up having to back away a bit from the original plan, as it was
Floyd | just too weird (for one thing, it involved the player using verbs that
Floyd | she couldn't understand), but I still like the rather dreamlike
Floyd | quality that resulted; everything has some sort of internal logic,
Floyd | even if you don't know what it is.
Floyd |
Floyd | While I was deep into development, I read The Book of the New Sun, by
Floyd | Gene Wolfe, which turned out to have some weird things in common with
Floyd | For A Change. It's also about bringing the sun, in many ways, and uses
Floyd | a strange (though English) vocabulary that the reader has to pick up
Floyd | on the fly. While I didn't imitate it in any way, it was an
Floyd | inspiration in that it showed someone successfully using the same
Floyd | kinds of elements.
Floyd |
Floyd | The main problem with destroying the immensely high wall was figuring
Floyd | how to get rid of it without destroying the world in a huge cataclysm.
Floyd | My happiest moment of developing was realizing the way in which I
Floyd | could solve that problem using the objects I already had in my world.
Floyd |
Floyd | Thanks again to everyone involved in the Interactive Fiction
Floyd | Competition for providing me with the motivation to finally finish a
Floyd | game.
