ClubFloyd Transcript:
All Things Devours by half sick of shadows

As played on ifMUD on July 16, 2011

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of All Things Devours, written by half sick of shadows. All Things Devours was released as part of the 2004 Interactive Fiction Competition, where it took third place. It was nominated for Xyzzies for Best Puzzles and Best Use of Medium, and won the Xyzzy for Best Individual Puzzle. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Firion asks, "No Jacqueline today?"
genericgeekgirl says, "She's in Seattle."
Rotonoto says, "Apparently there are no computers in Seattle."

eu says (to DavidW), "We owe you one."
eu clears the save counter. DavidW says, "You'll forgive me if I don't play; I really need to go get lunch."
lunasspecto says (to Firion), "I was at the last meeting, and I'll be at the next. I'd be a more regular member if I actually lived in Boston or something."
lunasspecto exclaims, "Ooh, game's working!"
Rotonoto says (to floyd), "x desk"

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | Dark hair frames a warm face. Despite the anxiety written now in your
Floyd | tense brow, the confidence of youth and vibrancy of intellect are
Floyd | clear. There is a depth in your clear green eyes.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says, "My understanding is that this is one where play is short, but you have to learn by messing things up a few times."
Rotonoto says, "Female PC. Nice."
Gunther asks, "Metal Gear!?"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "press basement"

Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "um, It belatedly occurs to me that this particular game might be difficult or impossible to play via Floyd because you constantly need to know the exact time when everything happens."
Rotonoto asks, "Do we think the alarm button turns the alarm off or turns it on?"
inuredbyheavyrain asks, "Does this game have a command to see the time?"
eu says (to Floyd), "time"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto asks, "Oh, we need a status line, in other words?"
inuredbyheavyrain says (to Floyd), "see time"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.

eu says (to Floyd), "about"
Floyd |
Floyd | All Things Devours is a short piece of interactive fiction, leaning
Floyd | strongly towards the text-adventure end of the spectrum. It explores
Floyd | an all-too-familiar science fiction paradigm in what I hope is a
Floyd | rather refreshing and satisfying manner. However, due to the intrinsic
Floyd | nature of its subject matter, it is not as fair as one might hope for
Floyd | a modern piece of interactive fiction. In particular, any move you
Floyd | make may put things into an unwinnable state. You are therefore
Floyd | encouraged to save frequently, and also to realise that you will
Floyd | probably have to start over several times to find the most
Floyd | satisfactory ending.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
inuredbyheavyrain says (to Floyd), "look watch"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |

eu says, "Hold, on let me try locally."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x timer"

Floyd | the job.

Rotonoto says (to floyd), "time"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
eu says, "I'm not seeing a suitable command. FWIW, play begins at 4:17 and advances 5 s/turn. Hmm."
eu says, "Also, I fail at typing today."
Rotonoto says, "Well, somebody play it in Frotz or whatever & keep track of the time."
lunasspecto has trouble finding any typographical errors.
eu says, "Okay. I will mirror locally."
eu asks, "Since we haven't gone anywhere, can we restart so that I can sync?"
Rotonoto says, "Feel free."
eu says (to lunasspecto), "``To'' rather than ``too'' and ``hold, on'' rather than ``hold on.''"
eu says (to Floyd), "restart"
Floyd | Are you sure you want to restart?
eu says (to Floyd), "y"

Rotonoto says (to floyd), "turn card over"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to turn the ID card.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
djfletch asks, "if you can't blow up your own lab, whose lab _can_ you blow up?"
genericgeekgirl says, "Fair enough."
Rotonoto says (to genericgeekgirl), "Yes."

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto asks, "Time to go find door controls. Basement, anyone?"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "look under desk"
Floyd | You find nothing of interest.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
djfletch says, "yeah, go for it"
Rotonoto says (to floyd), "d"
Floyd |
Floyd | Basement Landing
Floyd | A cramped space at the bottom of the stairs. A corridor can be seen to
Floyd | the north through the automatic door, and the stairs lead back up to
Floyd | the foyer.
Floyd |
Floyd | To the north is a closed automatic door.

Floyd |
Floyd | Basement Landing
Floyd | A cramped space at the bottom of the stairs. A corridor can be seen to
Floyd | the north through the automatic door, and the stairs lead back up to
Floyd | the foyer.
Floyd |
Floyd | To the north is an open automatic door.
Floyd | The automatic door softly slides closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "Hmm"
eu says, "We might try going north, to see if they open for us anyway."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | (first inserting your ID card)
Floyd | You swipe your card through the slot, and hold your breath.
Floyd | The door slides open with a soft rattle.
Floyd | Perfect. Just as you'd hoped. The bastards hadn't even thought to
Floyd | disable your card.
Floyd |
Floyd | Basement Corridor
Floyd | A long north-south corridor, much the same as those on the other
Floyd | floors. Three gray doors line the eastern wall. The first two have
Floyd | small glass windows, peering into darkened laboratories. The third is
Floyd | plain. All three are closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | At the north end a fourth door leads to the Deutsch lab.
Floyd |
Floyd | To the south is an open automatic door, leading back to the landing.
Floyd | The automatic door softly slides closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "yay"
djfletch says, "so maybe another button would have let us through the first door"
Rotonoto says, "We seem to be basement-cleared."
eu says (to djfletch), "Right."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x windows"
Floyd | You can't see anything of interest through the glass.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x eastern doors"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x doors"
Floyd | There are three doors on the eastern wall of the corridor, the first
Floyd | two (to the south-east and east) lead to the Bostrom and Wallace labs.
Floyd | The third (to the north-east) leads to a small equipment room. At the
Floyd | north end is the door to the Deutsch lab. To the south, the plate
Floyd | glass automatic door to the landing stands closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says (to floyd), "n"
Floyd | (first opening the door to the Deutsch lab)
Floyd | (first unlocking the door to the Deutsch lab)
Floyd |
Floyd | The Deutsch Laboratory
Floyd | The lab is order and chaos. By the dim blue-green light of a few
Floyd | swirling screen savers, you can see the cluttered benches of your
Floyd | colleagues, frozen in the mess of academic creativity. Frozen exactly
Floyd | as they were when badges were flashed, when we looked on in disbelief
Floyd | as they took control of the lab. Yours however, is clean. The books
Floyd | and papers are in neat stacks. They have been working here.
Floyd |
Floyd | Nearby, against the north wall is the prototype, a six foot cylinder
Floyd | of brushed steel cladding. The door has been taken off and is nowhere
Floyd | to be seen. They have been working on it too. You wince at the sight.
Floyd |
Floyd | To the south, the door to the lab lies open.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a battery, a flashlight (which is empty) and a worn brass
Floyd | key here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "take all"
Floyd | battery: Taken.
Floyd | flashlight: Taken.
Floyd | worn brass key: Taken.
Floyd | door to the Deutsch lab: The door to the Deutsch lab is locked in
Floyd | place.
Floyd | your bench: your bench is too heavy for that.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "put battery in flashlight"
Floyd | You put the battery into the flashlight.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x cylinder"
Floyd | You had built the prototype to get a strong negative result, to show
Floyd | that the standard model of Quantum Mechanics led to demonstrably false
Floyd | claims involving reverse causation. You were mistaken. One by one,
Floyd | your experiments showed your preliminary calculations to have been
Floyd | correct. When the military removed you from your project, only one
Floyd | aspect remained untested -- an aspect you had been loath to test
Floyd | before you could predict the results -- inconsistent observation.
Floyd |
Floyd | What would happen if anomalies were observed by those in the original
Floyd | time-line? Your prior experiments had heavily shielded the prototype
Floyd | from outside interaction to avoid the very possibility. And as the
Floyd | calculations came out time and again, that is the only reason you are
Floyd | alive today. When an observer in the original time-line has an
Floyd | anomolous observation, the wave function of the temporally relocated
Floyd | object collapses and the relocation retrospectively fails, preserving
Floyd | chronological consistency. There is just one side effect: total
Floyd | transformation of the object's mass into a burst of photons -- pure
Floyd | energy.
Floyd |
Floyd | You tried to tell them over and again. They assumed you were merely
Floyd | jealous of the takeover. Now, the night before their scheduled 'first
Floyd | main experiment', you have come to put an end to it all. To destroy
Floyd | your prototype and avoid tomorrow's nightmare.
Floyd |
Floyd | The prototype itself a six foot tall, four foot wide cylinder, clad
Floyd | with brushed steel. The frame and door were fitted with quantum
Floyd | shielding to prevent decoherence of the wave function, but now the
Floyd | door has been removed and any use of the machine is potentially
Floyd | disastrous.
Floyd |
Floyd | On close inspection, it appears that an attempt is in progress to move
Floyd | the control panel so that it can be operated from the inside. As it
Floyd | is, the protoype is currently not functioning, but you think you could
Floyd | probably complete the modification within a minute or two.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "eu, tell me if I need to slow down"
genericgeekgirl says, "Also, meh. Wall of text."
eu says, "You can keep going. I will catch up."
Rotonoto says, "What's cladding? :)"
inuredbyheavyrain says, "I also support the Copenhagen interpretation."
Rotonoto says, "This will probably involve changing the past at some point. Yummy."
inuredbyheavyrain says, "I do not support the magical time-traveling particles idea, though."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x control panel"
Floyd | You cannot see the control panel clearly from here, and would need to
Floyd | enter the protoype.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x books"
Floyd | A few texts on Quantum Mechanics and String Theory that have served
Floyd | you very well.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "read books"
Floyd | A few texts on Quantum Mechanics and String Theory that have served
Floyd | you very well.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x papers"
Floyd | A collection of photocopied journal papers that you had been reading a
Floyd | few weeks ago.
Floyd |
Floyd | You suddenly notice that your research notes are not here. You were
Floyd | sure they would be -- and would thus be destroyed in the blast. This
Floyd | is bad. Very bad.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says, "Just what I was about to suggest. Open & enter it."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "enter prototype"
Floyd |
Floyd | Inside the prototype
Floyd | The interior of the prototype is cramped and dark. On the wall you can
Floyd | see the half-installed control panel. Through the open hatch you can
Floyd | see some of the Deutsch lab.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x panel"
Floyd | A brushed steel control panel with a blue LED timer, set to 0 seconds,
Floyd | and a shiny silver button.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says, "Secondary mission: locate & destroy my notes."
genericgeekgirl asks, "Let's see what something small does? Like 15 seconds?"
eu says (to Rotonoto), "Indeed."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "close hatch"
Floyd | You cannot do that from here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "set timer to 15"
Floyd | (the timed explosive device to that)
Floyd | Time until detonation: 15 seconds.
Floyd | (you probably don't want to be carrying the device when that
Floyd | occurs...)
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "undo"
Floyd | Inside the prototype
Floyd | [Previous turn undone.]
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "wrong timer"
eu says, "Also, it turns out that we're playing the original comp entry, which has objects in different locations than v2. But I'm resynced."
lunasspecto laughs.
inuredbyheavyrain says, "I have a theory that our minds manipulate the potential states of electrons like programmers manipulating bits in binary, but I have not the slightest clue how to test that."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "set blue led timer to 15 seconds"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to set the flashlight.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to set the control panel to
Floyd | that.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x timer"
Floyd | (the timed explosive device)
Floyd | A length of steel pipe filled with powder and fused with a digital
Floyd | timer. Not your most elegant piece of work, but it will hopefully do
Floyd | the job.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "x blue timer"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to examine the flashlight.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says, "Damn bugs."
eu asks, "Just ``panel,'' maybe?"
eu says, "Oh, you tried that."
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "set panel to 15 seconds"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to set the control panel to
Floyd | that.
Floyd |

Rotonoto says (to floyd), "set panel to 15"
Floyd | You won't be able to set the control panel until you complete the
Floyd | modifications.

genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "set panel"
Floyd | You won't be able to set the control panel until you complete the
Floyd | modifications.
Floyd |

genericgeekgirl says, "ah"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "fix panel"
Floyd | You would achieve nothing by this.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says, "it didn't like the 'seconds'"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "complete modifications"
Floyd | After a few moments, you realise that completing the modification will
Floyd | require a ribbon cable to connect the components. You know the type of
Floyd | cable well, but don't have any in the lab right now. Still, the
Floyd | equipment room in the corridor should have one.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Rotonoto says, "See if you can just MODIFY PROTOTYPE"
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "fix panel"

Floyd | Basement Equipment Room
Floyd | It is almost completely dark. Some faint light spills in from the west
Floyd | through the open door, allowing you to just discern the outlines of a
Floyd | series of shelves. By the door is a light switch.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "turn on light"
Floyd | The fluorescent lights flicker hopefully, strobing rapidly across the
Floyd | scattered equipment. Then darkness. Nothing but a few fleeting

Floyd |
Floyd | >
genericgeekgirl says (to Floyd), "turn on flashlight"
Floyd | The switch clicks, but no light is forthcoming. It looks as if you

Rotonoto says, "lol"
djfletch asks, "can we get into the other labs here?"

Floyd |

eu says, "2:40 after that to work with."

eu says, "The one elsewhere. Sorry."
genericgeekgirl says, "Can we break the window while she's being, uh, zapped? So she doesn't hear it."
eu says, "Uh, maybe."
djfletch says, "I wonder if the alarm button can turn off the alarm too"
djfletch says, "so if you exactly synchronize breaking the window with hitting that button"
genericgeekgirl says, "When we hit the alarm button earlier, it triggered the alarm. But didn't cause death."
genericgeekgirl says, "The alarm itself *might* not be an issue? Just that she shouldn't be hearing an alarm when we didn't."
lunasspecto says, "Wow, yeah."
genericgeekgirl asks, "Although. Hm. Let's see about breaking the window when she's in the machine, but if she presses it when we break it that *would* work, too, right?"
genericgeekgirl says, "Because she'd be hearing it anyway."
genericgeekgirl says, "In any case, there are two or three more doors up here to explore =)"
djfletch says, "that sounds good - the button wouldn't have to turn it off in that case"
eu says (to genericgeekgirl), "I think that's the right idea. But yeah, exploration."

Floyd | At precisely 4:20 am this morning a catastrophe of unprecedented scale

Floyd | The lab is order and chaos. By the dim blue-green light of a few
Floyd | swirling screen savers, you can see the cluttered benches of your

Floyd | working here.

Floyd | Nearby, against the north wall is the prototype, a six foot cylinder

Floyd | has been taken off and is nowhere to be seen.
