ClubFloyd Transcript:
The People's Glorious Revolutionary Text Adventure Game
by Taylor Vaughan

As played on ifMUD on January 29, 2011

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The People's Glorious Revolutionary Text Adventure Game, written by Taylor Vaughan. The People's Glorious Revolutionary Text Adventure Game was originally released as part of the 2010 Interactive Fiction Competition, where it took seventh place. At the time of posting this transcript, it has been nominated for a Xyzzy Award for Best Puzzles, though the winner has not yet been announced. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Nitku says, "well funk me"
Jacqueline pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd | Today is the day you've been waiting for! Today is the day when the
Floyd | Revolution arrives to sweep over this entire town, converting it to a
Floyd | worker's paradise! Your heart beats with trepidation and excitement
Floyd | and you can almost taste victory!

Floyd | But victory's not here yet. You still have a lot of work to do. After
Floyd | all, it's like Marx said: It's one thing to interpret the world but
Floyd | the point is to change it. And today, change will come!
Floyd | Now if only you could find your Revolutionary To-Do List...

Floyd |
Floyd | Revolutionary Headquarters
Floyd | In future generations, this building may well be a museum, for this is

Floyd | where the People's Committee for the Revolution made their glorious
Floyd | plans to liberate all who are oppressed! The red light that
Floyd | illuminates the room might cause eye strain and make it hard to work,
Floyd | but it is truly inspiring.
Floyd | You can exit the headquarters to the west (how appropriate!) and a
Floyd | staircase leads downwards to the lab.

Floyd |
Floyd | A giant workers' flag hangs on the back wall, filling your heart with
Floyd | Revolutionary Pride.
Floyd |
Floyd | Underneath the flag sits the committee's desk, upon which all
Floyd | Revolutionary Managerial Work is accomplished.

Floyd | >
Ellison arrives, ready to play with the toys. Ellison says, "w00t. I'm here!"
dsimon says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | You've known since you were 12 that it's fate that you share a name
Floyd | with the late, great Karl Marx. You've also been trying to grow out a
Floyd | beard like his but so far that hasn't gone very well.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your head itches beneath your papakha.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Ellison says, "oh yeah, this game"
Jacqueline says (to Ell), "You just missed the introtext - might want to recap the room."
dsimon says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying:
Floyd | your papakha (being worn)
Floyd | a WWTD Bracelet (being worn)
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "salute flag"
Floyd | You salute the workers' flag.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "(And hooray that you are here.)"
dsimon asks, "What would... trotsky do?"
Gerynar says (to Floyd), "x bracelet"
Floyd | A small bracelet with the words "What Would Trotsky Do?" as a reminder
Floyd | to always do the Revolutionary Thing.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "(And we might be playing your speed IF after this is done, Ell.)"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "scratch head"
Floyd | You swore a solemn vow not to remove the papakha from your head until
Floyd | the Revolution is achieved!

Floyd | Well, on the other hand, your hair is getting really greasy and itchy.
Floyd | It probably wouldn't hurt to take your hat off for a minute or two.
Floyd | Tucked into the hollow of your papakha is your to-do list. So that's
Floyd | where it went!
Floyd |
Floyd | You scratch your hair.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says, "Hehe, one point"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "read list"
Floyd | You look over your to-do list.

Floyd | steps to glorious Revolution:
Floyd | ( ) win hearts of proletariat
Floyd | ( ) win minds of proletariat
Floyd | (-) win bodies of proletariat (don't do. that is disgusting.)
Floyd | ( ) get parts for comrade semenov
Floyd | ( ) ruin the good name of a major corporation

Floyd | ( ) cripple capitalist government infrastructure
Floyd | ( ) find supplies to throw a communist party!

Jacqueline exclaims, "I never saw this list!"
Ellison says, "did the walkthrough that came with this game spell out all of the alternate solutions? I can't remember how much of this game is still undiscovered country for me"
Jacqueline exclaims, "That might have been helpful!"
dsimon says, "Let's party like it's a glorious 1999 revolution"
DavidW asks, "'parts'?"
dsimon says, "Comrade semenov maybe is a robot, or maybe just a tinkerer"
DavidW asks (of Jacqueline), "My head was itchy. I scratched. Seemed a obvious thing to try, no?"
dsimon says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | Revolutionary Headquarters
Floyd | In future generations, this building may well be a museum, for this is
Floyd | where the People's Committee for the Revolution made their glorious

Floyd | plans to liberate all who are oppressed! The red light that
Floyd | illuminates the room might cause eye strain and make it hard to work,

dsimon says (to Floyd), "x flag"
Floyd | A glorious red flag emblazoned with a yellow hammer and sickle. Just
Floyd | looking at it swells your heart with pride and anticipation.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "x work"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Ellison says, "whoa, I don't think I ever took off my hat, either"
DB arrives, ready to play with the toys.
Gerynar says (to Floyd), "x desk"
Floyd | A fine wooden desk, carved out of solid wood, no doubt by an oppressed
Floyd | worker. Luckily his work was turned to good use when the Committee

Floyd | liberated this desk from the basement of a nearby office building
Floyd | where it was wasting away as an example of capitalist decadence.
Floyd |
Floyd | The desk has a single large drawer. The drawer is closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "open it"
Floyd | You open the drawer, revealing some borscht.
Floyd |
Floyd | Guiltily, you quickly put your papakha back on.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "x borscht"
Floyd | An bowl of old, rancid borscht. Who knows how long it was in that
Floyd | drawer?
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Lionheart says (to Floyd), "find supplies"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

DB says, "Hey"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take borscht"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "take it"
Floyd | You already have that.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says, "Ack"
DavidW says, "hey DB"
dsimon says, "Perhaps we should pick a driver for a while"
dsimon asks, "DB?"
Alex says (to dsimon), "Awwwk! Word on the street is that a DB is a database."
Lionheart says (to Floyd), "eat borscht"
Floyd | The borscht has really gone bad. There's no way you're going to even
Floyd | taste it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

DavidW says (to dsimon), "I was saying hi to Duncan."
DB asks, "Can you fill me in on what's happened in the game?"
DavidW says (to DB), "We found a to-do list and some borscht."
dsimon says (to Floyd), "smell borscht"
Floyd | It smells terrible.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Ellison says, "hey DB"
dsimon says (to Floyd), "x desk"
Floyd | A fine wooden desk, carved out of solid wood, no doubt by an oppressed
Floyd | worker. Luckily his work was turned to good use when the Committee
Floyd | liberated this desk from the basement of a nearby office building
Floyd | where it was wasting away as an example of capitalist decadence.
Floyd |
Floyd | The desk has a single large drawer. The drawer is open. It contains

Floyd | nothing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Gerynar says, "we started, scratched our head and found our to-do list, saluted the flag and found some old borsht"
DavidW says, "spoiled borscht."
Jacqueline says (to DB), "Also, you can now recap the room, fwiw."
Lionheart says, "There's a recap command but I forget what it is"
Ellison says, "@recap #clubfloyd 100000"
Gerynar says, "but maybe not that many lines"
dsimon says (to Floyd), "look under desk"
Floyd | You find nothing of interest.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | Revolutionary Headquarters

Floyd |

Floyd | Underneath the flag sits the committee's desk, upon which all
Floyd | Revolutionary Managerial Work is accomplished, drawer opened.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "x light"
Floyd | A red light. It makes it a little difficult to read or write, but the
Floyd | Revolutionary Ambiance it provides is worth it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "take flag"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "d"
Floyd |
Floyd | People's Laboratory
Floyd | This room is filled with all sorts of machines and inventions for the
Floyd | betterment of the lives of the proletariat.
Floyd | The only exit is up the stairs back to the rest of the Headquarters.
Floyd |

Floyd | Comrade Semenov sits at his workbench, hunched over an undoubtedly
Floyd | miraculous device.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can also see Semenov's workbench (on which are the Marxist
Floyd | Ventriloquator Mk II, the Communistic Converter and some sleeping
Floyd | serum) here.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x semenov"
Floyd | Comrade Semenov is a diligent worker, his life devoted to science. He
Floyd | is currently fiddling intently with the circuit board of his latest

Floyd | creation, his eyes hidden behind his impenetrably thick glasses.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says, "where does he find such wonderful toys"
dsimon says, "Ah, the Q to our proletarian james bond"
Lionheart says (to Floyd), "ventrilo"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x mk"
Floyd | The Ventriloquator is a long plastic tube that widens at one end into
Floyd | a curved speaker.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "x device"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the Marxist Ventriloquator Mk II, the Communistic
Floyd | Converter or the miraculous device?
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "miraculous"
Floyd | The device is currently in many small pieces. That, along with the
Floyd | fact that you have little to no knowledge of electronics, means you
Floyd | have no idea what it is or what it does.
Floyd |

Floyd | The miraculous device is currently switched off.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DB says, "The Converter looks useful."
dsimon says (to Floyd), "turn it on"
Floyd | You can't turn on the miraculous device while Comrade Semenov is
Floyd | holding it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "x converter"
Floyd | The Communistic Converter is a rather small cylinder with some nasty
Floyd | looking spikes coming out of one end.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "take it"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's the Communistic Converter, Commissar," Semenov says. "It's a
Floyd | very powerful piece of technology. Put it on someone and it will
Floyd | inject pure Revolutionary Spirit into them, instantly converting them
Floyd | to our side. Be very careful with it though, it can only be used

Floyd | once."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about miraculous device"
Floyd | "What's that you're working on now, Comrade Semenov?" you ask.

Floyd | "This is going to be the greatest piece of Revolutionary Technology
Floyd | known to man, Commissar! It's so exciting I can't find ample words to
Floyd | describe it," Semenov jabbers as he pokes at the device with even more
Floyd | excitement.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

DB says, "Ooh... one use only..."
dsimon says (to Floyd), "take ventriloquator"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | "The Marxist Ventriloquator mark II is an amazing device," Semenov

Floyd | says. "Simply point it at a person or object and he, she or it will be
Floyd | forced to shout out a glorious Marxist quote!"
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says, "HA"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take serum"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's a super-potent (but safe and nonaddictive!) sleeping serum,
Floyd | Commissar," Semenov says. "I invented it so that a Revolutionary can

Floyd | get the sleep he or she needs in order to function for a full day's
Floyd | worth of Revolutionary Work. It tastes pretty bad by itself, though.
Floyd | You should probably put it into a food or drink if you want to have
Floyd | some."
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "point ventriloquator at semenov"
Floyd | You point the Ventriloquator at Comrade Semenov.
Floyd | Comrade Semenov suddenly swells up with Revolutionary Pride and shouts
Floyd | "Workers of the world, unite!"
Floyd | "I'm trying to work here, Commissar," Semenov frowns.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Gerynar says, "point ventriloquator at jacq"
Lionheart says (to Floyd), "point ventriloquator at me"
Floyd | You point the Ventriloquator at yourself.

Floyd | You suddenly swells up with Revolutionary Pride and shouts "Outside of
Floyd | a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to
Floyd | read!"
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about parts"
Floyd | "What do you need for me to get for you?" you ask.
Floyd | Semenov glances at the parts strewn across his workbench. "I think
Floyd | that all I need to finish the device is a computer's motherboard,
Floyd | Commissar."

Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "point ventriloquator at flag"
Floyd | You point the Ventriloquator at the workers' flag.
Floyd | The workers' flag suddenly acquires a voice. "I never forget a face,

Floyd | but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception!" it shouts.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about motherboard"
Floyd | "Tell me about the motherboard you need, Comrade Semenov," you say.

Floyd | "It's fairly simple," Semenov says, "I just need a regular motherboard
Floyd | like you can find in any computer."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says, "guess all Marxes are equal in the revolution."
eladnarra says, "hahaha"
dsimon says, "Hehehe"
Ellison says, "#juvenile heh, Semenov. I missed that last time"
Gerynar says, "I'm thinking that it's the wrong kind of marx quotes"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about himself"
Floyd | "How are you doing, Comrade Semenov?" you ask.
Floyd | "I'm fine, Commissar," Semenov says. "Right now I'm excited to finish
Floyd | this device."
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "l"

dsimon says (to Floyd), "x workbench"
Floyd | The workbench is cluttered with all manner of half-assembled gizmos,
Floyd | assorted electronic parts, tools and incomprehensible blueprints.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "show flag to comrade"
Floyd | Comrade Semenov doesn't seem interested.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

DavidW says, "gasp"
dsimon says (to Floyd), "search workbench"
Floyd | There is nothing on Semenov's workbench.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Lionheart says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about revolution"
Floyd | "Tell me, Comrade, how do you feel about the Revolution?" you ask.
Floyd | Semenov looks at you, smiling. "I'm ready for the Revolution to arrive
Floyd | as soon as possible, Commissar. I can't wait for the day when I can
Floyd | turn science to peaceful ends for the good of the proletariat."

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Ellison says (to Floyd), "get semenov"
Floyd | I don't suppose Comrade Semenov would care for that.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Lionheart says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about proletariat"
Floyd | Semenov shrugs and silently continues working.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

DavidW says (to Floyd), "ask semenov about name"
Floyd | Semenov shrugs and silently continues working.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says, "Hm, that's a slight bug, there's nothing on the cluttered workbench"
Lionheart says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about science"
Floyd | Semenov shrugs and silently continues working.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Binder asks, "it's an abstract clutter?"
dsimon says (to Floyd), "ask comrade about me"
Floyd | "What do you think of me as a Commissar, Comrade Semenov?" you ask.
Floyd | Semenov looks up at you seriously. "I think you're quite capable, and
Floyd | I'm glad to be working alongside you to bring about the Revolution,"

Floyd | he says.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Gerynar asks, "or meta-clutter?"
DavidW says, "still, there ought to be mention of the clutter."

Floyd | You are standing on the street outside of the Committee's

Floyd |
Floyd | Comrade Jetski is here, reading a comic book.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Gerynar says (to Floyd), "x book"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "x comic"
Floyd | The comic colorfully details the adventures of Captain Freedom as he
Floyd | fights the Red Menace. What garbage.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Lionheart says (to Floyd), "point ventriloquator at jetski"

dsimon says (to Floyd), "point ventriloquator at comic"

Floyd | The comic suddenly acquires a voice. "Religion is the opium of the
Floyd | masses!" it shouts.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "x jetski"
Floyd | Jetski may talk like an idiot and look like an idiot, but don't let
Floyd | that fool you. He really is an idiot. Luckily he seems to have a

Floyd | ridiculous amount of blind luck, avoiding both injury and arrest
Floyd | despite how out of his league the missions he usually attempts tend to
Floyd | be.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "ask jetski about revolution"
Floyd | "Comrade Jetski, how do you feel about the Revolution?" you ask.
Floyd | Jetski grins a dopey smile at you. "I tell ya, Commissar, I just can't

Floyd |

Floyd | >
dsimon says (to Floyd), "take comic"
Floyd | That seems to belong to Comrade Jetski.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

dsimon says (to Floyd), "ask jetski for comic"
Floyd | "I need to requisition that comic book, Comrade Jetski," you say.
Floyd | "But Commissar," Jetski whines, "I'll get bored and fall asleep and
Floyd | then I can't guard the HQ! You can have it but first I need something
Floyd | else to keep me from getting bored..."

dsimon says (to Floyd), "give borscht to jetski"
Floyd | "Are you hungry, Comrade Jetski?" you ask. "Would you like this

Floyd | borscht I found in the desk drawer?"
Floyd | "Oh hey, that's where that went!" Jetski says, slapping himself in the
Floyd | forehead. "Sure thing, Commissar, I'm pretty hungry." He grabs the
Floyd | borscht and gobbles it down, then lets out a hearty Revolutionary
Floyd | Belch. "Wow, that's even better when it's a few days old," he says.
Floyd | "I'm full of energy now, no chance of getting bored. Here, you can

Floyd | take the comic book I was reading."
Floyd |

dsimon says (to Floyd), "take comic"
