ClubFloyd Transcript:
Awakening by Pete Gardner

As played on ifMUD on January 2, 2010

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Awakening, written by Pete Gardner. Awakening was originally released as part of the 2009 Saugus.net Halloween Ghost Story Contest, where it tied for first place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd |
Floyd | An ear-shattering crash shocks you into wakefulness as a bolt of
Floyd | lightning splits the dark sky in two. The downpour begins abruptly,
Floyd | pelting exposed soil with enough force to create pockmarks resembling
Floyd | the surface of the moon. You realize that your eyes are open and the
Floyd | fat raindrops strike them relentlessly. Another searing bolt assaults
Floyd | your senses, followed again by the thunderclap, but less quickly now,
Floyd | as the center of the storm moves away from your location.
Floyd |
Floyd | Something deep inside you begins to grow restless. Perhaps, at last,
Floyd | it is time to move. Your tongue slithers dryly in your mouth. You
Floyd | are thirsty.

Floyd |
Floyd | In Awakening, you play the role of someone who finds himself in a
Floyd | strange situation and is unable to remember anything. As the game
Floyd | progresses, it becomes more and more apparent what may be going on.
Floyd |
Floyd | This game is not meant to be taken seriously. It is a light-hearted
Floyd | attempt at spookiness -- the sort of thing many of us may be looking
Floyd | for around Halloween time.
Floyd |
Floyd | If you have never played interactive fiction before, you may want to
Floyd | explore the help available in these menus to get you started. There
Floyd | is, however, a few things about Awakening that you should know from
Floyd | the start:
Floyd |
Floyd | If you encounter any characters in the game, you can talk with them by
Floyd | typing "talk to " and then the name of the character. For example,
Floyd | were you to encounter someone who was a doctor, you would say: "talk
Floyd | to doctor" to begin a conversation. Doing this more than once in a
Floyd | row may get additional responses from him.
Floyd |
Floyd | Another thing you can do with other characters in the game, is get
Floyd | them to do the same things you might do yourself. For example, if the
Floyd | doctor was willing to obey you, you could type: "doctor, go north" and
Floyd | he would walk out of the room (assuming there really was an exit
Floyd | leading north). Or, you could say "doctor, take the scalpel",
Floyd | "doctor, go north", "doctor, drop the scalpel" and so on. Just
Floyd | remember that if you were to tell the doctor to go out of the room you
Floyd | are in, you may have to follow him into the new location to continue
Floyd | telling him what to do. This may not be necessary, however, in a
Floyd | collection of rooms that are grouped together in one large, open
Floyd | space.
Floyd |
Floyd | That should be enough to get you started. Here's hoping you enjoy the
Floyd | ride!

Floyd | Gateway
Floyd | An iron-wrought gate lies askew on rusted hinges, no longer able to
Floyd | prevent external access to the churchyard during late hours. The
Floyd | muddy path leading past them and southwards into the church grounds is
Floyd | being churned by the heavy rain, but not quite enough to completely
Floyd | obscure a faint impression therein.
Floyd |
Floyd | Standing alone a little to the west is a small gatehouse, its narrow
Floyd | entrance and a pane-less window little more than dark smudges in the
Floyd | prevailing gloom.
Floyd |
Floyd | After taking a few steps, you are overcome with nausea and drop to
Floyd | your knees in a dry retch. Your head spins for several fevered
Floyd | moments. You need to drink badly...
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "BLOOD"
Jacqueline says, "Just kidding."
Jacqueline asks, "Can we drink rain water?"
djfletch says, "BOOZE"
DavidW says, "Try"
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "drink rain"
Floyd | You throw your head back and allow the water pelting down on your face
Floyd | to enter your mouth. Once enough has gathered, you swallow
Floyd | desperately. Instead of satisfying your thirst, even minutely, your
Floyd | insides begin to boil and you are forced to bend over and spew it back
Floyd | out.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "woohoo"
Jacqueline says, "oh wait"
Jacqueline says, "okay, blood then."
DavidW says, "See if there's a dead guard in the guardhouse, I guess."
Jacqueline says, "I have been reading too many vampire books, it would appear."
Nitku says, "There might be some wine and holy water in the church"
Nitku says, "Although I don't think we can hold holy water any better"
Jacqueline says, "Holy water would, I think, kill us. But I'm up for finding one of the cool game endings, so."
Jacqueline says (to Nitku), "Go fer it."

Floyd | Church Grounds
Floyd | The gravel path you are on passes by a plot of manicured land upon
Floyd | which resides a small church building. It is fashioned of dark river
Floyd | stone, stained all the darker from the downpour. Its steeple rises
Floyd | suddenly into the gloom, so that the belfry up top is partially
Floyd | obscured. Through the barred windows a glimmer of yellow light
Floyd | issues, flickering like candlelight. The front entrance is to the
Floyd | east, while the path continues south.
Floyd |
Floyd | Some unexplainable attraction pulls your attention to the old church
Floyd | building to the east...

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x windows"
Floyd | Marvelous works of stained glass, they depict several famous
Floyd | individuals from scripture, namely Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, Joseph,
Floyd | Issac, Jacob, David, Solomon, Daniel and finally Christ Himself.

Floyd | and bas-relief carvings worked into the wood.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Hey look, Bible Celebrities!"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x carvings"
Floyd | They are a crude native rendering of something that appears to be a
Floyd | Kraken swallowing a dinghy. Or perhaps that is a larger vessel. It
Floyd | is difficult to tell.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says, "woo kraken"
Jacqueline says, "hooray kraken"
Jacqueline says, "Now let's go inside and find the astrolabe."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x handles"
Floyd | Massive and shaped from solid brass, they are sculpted into the shape
Floyd | of a lion's head.
Floyd |

Floyd | to find something to drink.

Floyd | Here is where parishioners must have parked their vehicles, be they
Floyd | wagon or automobile, before proceeding north to the church building.

Floyd | Small Shack
Floyd | A small shack rises out of the overgrowth in a clearing at the end of
Floyd | the winding path. It looks quite old, but has not fallen into
Floyd | disrepair, as has the coach house and the other small buildings on the
Floyd | church grounds. Along the front is a wooden door, and a small square
Floyd | window to its right, which flickers with a pale yellow light issuing
Floyd | from within.
Floyd |

Floyd |

Floyd | that relief to your torment lies within the little structure standing
Floyd | before you.
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says (to Floyd), "look through window"

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says (to Floyd), "knock on door"
Floyd | There is some shuffling behind the door. Its knob turns slowly and it
Floyd | opens a crack. A bloodshot eye peers at you, assessing you quietly.
Floyd | Then, the door opens a little further and framed there, his back to
Floyd | the crackling flames of a fire within the shack, stands an old man,
Floyd | probably the caretaker.

Fang says, "maybe we should ask him to find a phone"
Fang says (to Floyd), "bite me"
Floyd | Not here... Not like this. You feel as though you must first gain his

Floyd | dryly deep inside your chest...
Floyd |

Jacqueline says (to djfletch), "Dammit, I was eating and nearly choked on my eggs."
Gerynar says, "like I could stop you, I'm the neophyte, you folks are the old ones"

djfletch says, "probably need to find something better to give him"

DavidW says (to Floyd), "talk to man"
Floyd | "If you've nothing to tell me, then I'll be telling you something.
Floyd | Good day!"
Floyd |
Floyd | You stagger and drop to your knees, the strength fleeing your body.

Floyd | feet.

DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd | Entryway
Floyd | The entryway to the church leads north to the nave. You can see the
Floyd | entire ground floor of the church from here: North of the nave is the
Floyd | chancel and east of the nave is an alcove.

DavidW says, "I'm lost now. I don't know what you guys did."
Nitku says, "Nobody did anything."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "man, east"
Floyd | The caretaker arrives at the Alcove from the west.

smartgenes says, "he has to come back towards us that's all"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |
Floyd | Nave
Floyd | The nave is where parishioners would gather to sit in the pews and
Floyd | hear the preached message. The walls are paneled with aged cedar and
Floyd | the high, vaulted ceiling fades away into darkness above. An altar
Floyd | stands at the front of the room, before a raised area called the
Floyd | chancel. Arched stained-glass windows line the east and west walls.
Floyd | Access to the chancel is north of the nave and south leads to the
Floyd | entryway. To the east is a small alcove containing an organ. A
Floyd | narrow doorway up by the chancel leads to the northwest.

Floyd |
Floyd | Chancel
Floyd | A raised area providing a clear, elevated view of all of the pews in
Floyd | the nave and the stained glass windows lining the walls. A threadbare
Floyd | rug covers part of the chancel floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "finally"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x windows"
Floyd | Marvelous works of stained glass, they depict several famous
Floyd | individuals from scripture, namely Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, Joseph,
Floyd | Issac, Jacob, David, Solomon, Daniel and finally Christ Himself.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x rug"
Floyd | It is faded and threadbare, having seen a lot of use. There was a
Floyd | pattern on it, but it is so faded now as to be indistinguishable.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "move rug"
Floyd | You pick up the rug, revealing a trapdoor beneath!
Floyd |
Floyd | Chancel
Floyd | A raised area providing a clear, elevated view of all of the pews in
Floyd | the nave and the stained glass windows lining the walls. In the
Floyd | absence of the threadbare rug, a trapdoor has been revealed in the
Floyd | chancel floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open trapdoor"
Floyd | It seems to be locked.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "unlock trapdoor with key"
Floyd | You might want to try prying it with something, instead.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
smartgenes asks, "your plan was to move the rug?"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "pry trapdoor with wrench."
Floyd | Using the lug wrench as a crowbar, you jam it under the latch and
Floyd | wrench it apart. The latch is thoroughly destroyed and springs open.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "My plan was to have the man take the cruciform to the alcove."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open trapdoor"
Floyd | You open the trapdoor.

Floyd |
Floyd | Dark Chamber
Floyd | Illuminated only by the dim light issuing through the trapdoor, this
Floyd | unexpected chamber is bare, damp and cold. The walls and the floor
Floyd | are fashioned of black stone. Your ears detect the scratch and scurry
Floyd | of vermin hidden from sight in the dank and dingy corners of this
Floyd | place. In other words, you feel right at home.
Floyd |
Floyd | Situated squarely in the center of the room, upon a moldering velvet
Floyd | rug, is a large, black coffin. The lid stands open and the silk
Floyd | interior beckons to you.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
smartgenes says, "home sweet home"
Ellison says, "huh, ok, maybe this is a new-to-2009 game (he says after looking it up). still, it's a very similar plot as the 1998 'The Awakening' by Dennis Matheson, it seems"
smartgenes says (to Floyd), "enter coffin"
Floyd | You crawl slowly into the black coffin, feeling the silk interior
Floyd | against your skin. Yes, this will do. This is right. You can feel
Floyd | sleep tugging at you--blessed sleep.
Floyd |
Floyd | The caretaker comes into view over you. He looks down, with mindless
Floyd | love in his red-rimmed eyes. "I will look after you while you sleep,
Floyd | Master. Please don't worry."
Floyd |
Floyd | With that, he reaches for the lid and cautiously, respectfully, closes
Floyd | it over you. At last you feel a strange peace begin to settle in.
Floyd | Your mind begns to drift...questions arise as sleep takes you over.
Floyd | Why was this coffin here? Why even this dark chamber, for that
Floyd | matter? And more importantly, who are you? What is going on?
Floyd |
Floyd | But those are questions to be answered at another time. You will
Floyd | sleep now. You will gather strength. This is not finished. In fact,
Floyd | it has only begun....

Floyd | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game or QUIT?
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Ellison), "I haven't played the earlier one, but if they're very similar,... I guess I should check it out."
smartgenes says, "we have wonm eternal life as a vampire"
Jacqueline says, "Huh. Pretty cool."
Jacqueline says, "Good job, you guys."
Nitku says, "This was good, too"
Jacqueline says, "I suspect that, unlike the last game, that's probably the only ending."
DavidW says, "yeah, I suspect that also."
Ellison says (to DavidW), "well, you start off in a graveyard and there's a church, and I'm pretty sure you do something with a caretaker"
Jacqueline says, "So I'm up for the next one, unless people aren't up for running long, in which case we could save the third for another time. Up to you guys."
DavidW says, "I'll check out the other Awakening, see what it's like."
Jacqueline says (to Ellison), "And it has the same name. huh"
smartgenes says, "wow it's really fast with all these minds"
smartgenes says, "we were trying to make it more complicated with the cross thing"
Jacqueline says (to sg), "Yeah, if it weren't for CF I wouldn't see nearly so much IF."
Nitku says, "I'd like to play the last one too"
DavidW says, "hm. It's not identical. The other game has a dog on long leash puzzle."
ParserGirl says, "I think I remember that one."
DavidW says, "And a belfry. A red book."
ParserGirl says, "We played it here."
Nitku says, "Oh yeah, I remember that. We played that on CF."
DavidW says, "They have similiarities because of setup and locale, but they aren't the same game."
Ellison says, "actually, this doesn't seem to be the game I'm thinking of. I guess I'm wrong. maybe I *did* play the new one at some point. huh! there I go, assuming I never play any newer games again..."
DavidW says (to Ellison), "Some tropes do repeat themselves."
Jacqueline says, "heh"
