ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Lighthouse by Marius Müller

As played on ifMUD on January 2, 2010

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Lighthouse, written by Marius Müller. The Lighthouse was originally released as part of the 2009 Saugus.net Halloween Ghost Story Contest, where it tied for first place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd |
Floyd | What a way to end a holiday.
Floyd | First you slipped in the shower and broke your arm, and now you've
Floyd | lost your way on a remote "must-see" like Buwch Island. Then the
Floyd | rain. When you set out on your trip, it was a drizzle. When you
Floyd | realized you took a wrong turn, it was pouring. And, now, as you are
Floyd | back on track, it's a full-blown thunderstorm. Lightning hits the
Floyd | roaring waves in the distance, like screaming giants at war. The wind
Floyd | claws at your face and clothes, making you stagger. The cast doesn't
Floyd | help with that, either.
Floyd | But you promised yourself that you'd see the famous St. Cafasso
Floyd | lighthouse. The way back to town is too long now anyway.
Floyd |
Floyd | You shield your eyes once more and finally see the damned thing, a
Floyd | mile or two in the distance, its light circling the horizon, the only
Floyd | sign of human life in the raging inferno.
Floyd |
Floyd | The Lighthouse
Floyd | An Interactive Fiction by Marius M?ller The release number is 2
Floyd | Release 1 / Serial number 091027 / Inform 7 build 5Z71 (I6/v6.31 lib
Floyd | 6/12N)
Floyd | (FIRST TIME PLAYERS AND THOSE NEW TO IF SHOULD TYPE ABOUT)
Floyd |
Floyd | On the road
Floyd | The path has turned into inch-deep mud, and only with the help of the
Floyd | glaringly white lightning can you distinguish it from the soaked
Floyd | meadows all around you. It snakes its way upwards, towards the
Floyd | lighthouse on the cliffs, some miles north.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
smartgenes says, "remind me of the etiquette"
Nitku says, "No spoilers, don't solve puzzles if you have played before and know the answers to them, don't go too fast so people have time to read."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x lighthouse"
Floyd | Hidden by the curtain of rain, and sparsely illuminated by the
Floyd | occasional lightning, it stands tall and lean on the edge of the
Floyd | cliffs, providing light in eternal circles, unhindered by the
Floyd | elements. You know that it's made of brick and that the light is
Floyd | provided by an old lantern, for historical purposes. Shipping traffic
Floyd | in these waters has ceased a long time ago.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Well, unless there's a puzzle that's timed or something, or we otherwise designate a single driver, we can all enter commands, though it's best to agree as a group before we leave a location."
Jacqueline says, "And all those good things Nitku said as well."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying:
Floyd | a cast (being worn)
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "remove cast"
Floyd | Your arm isn't healed yet.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x cast"
Floyd | It's a white cast, reminiscent of a half-awake shower, a sudden slip
Floyd | and an embarrasing call to the front desk. It's, sadly, unsigned.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Gerynar says, "and no constantly shouting "kill him/her""
Jacqueline says, "Aw"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | You are a young tourist, determined on seeing the St. Buwch
Floyd | Lighthouse, to give this last day of your vacation some dignity.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
smartgenes asks, "huh, how is a cast like a shower?"
Jacqueline says, "I meant 'aw no signatures' not 'aw no killin'"
Jacqueline says (to smartgenes), "It reminds us of our fall in the shower."
Jacqueline says, "Which is how we broke our arm."
smartgenes says, "oh it reminds him, not quite right use of word.."
Jacqueline says, "Man, I wish I could write in a second language as well as Marius does. Envy."
Jacqueline says (to smartgenes), "I admit I had to read it twice myself."
DavidW asks, "north?"
smartgenes says, "this is 2nd language of someone.. crikey"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Sure."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |
Floyd | A fork in the road
Floyd | A path snakes off to the southeast, trickling lines of mud ebbing into
Floyd | the grass. The northbound path leads further upwards, against a small
Floyd | current of dirt and debris, to the crest of a small mound. The rain
Floyd | taps on a metallic roadsign by the fork with a strangely industrial,
Floyd | almost urban sound.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to smartgenes), "Yes, he's German."
djfletch arrives, full of funk, but no fun.
Gerynar says (to Floyd), "read sign"
Floyd | It's printed black on grey, and therefore almost impossible to make
Floyd | out in this weather. But by shielding your eyes, squinting, and moving
Floyd | your head to catch the reflections, you can decipher "BUWCH ISLAND
Floyd | RING PATH 12km" -to the southeast and "BUWCH ISLAND VILLAGE 3km" - to
Floyd | the south. "ST. CAFASSO LIGHTHOUSE - 500 mtrs north" looks the most
Floyd | promising.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
smartgenes asks, "lighthouse then?"
Jacqueline says, "This is sort of reminiscient of the Fire Tower."
Jacqueline says, "heh"
smartgenes says (to Floyd), "get sign"
Floyd | That's hardly portable.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "turn sign"
Floyd | It is fixed in place.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Aw."
DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "Not *quite* like Fire Tower."
Jacqueline says, "heh"
DavidW asks, "north again?"
Jacqueline says, "Yeah, toward the lighthouse."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | You fight your way up the slope. Muddy water, black like tar, slops
Floyd | around your ankles. It's hard, going against the wind and being almost
Floyd | overbalanced. You manage it, but upon reaching the crest, your shoes
Floyd | and socks are soaked.
Floyd |
Floyd | Crest of the mound
Floyd | You're almost blind here. Every few moments this area is bathed in
Floyd | harsh white light, leaving shadowy after-images in your sight.
Floyd | From here, you can see the lighthouse on top of the cliffs, maybe 200
Floyd | meters further north, and hear the cannonading waves against their
Floyd | base, deep and old, gnawing at the island.
Floyd | There is a picnic table, a few steps from the path, and someone is
Floyd | sitting there, head on his hands.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "This is like something I did on my last vacation."
Gerynar says (to Floyd), "x man"
Floyd | You take a few steps towards the man at the table, and then shudder.
Floyd | Reflexively shielding your eyes from the passing of the light, your
Floyd | stomach clenches as you realize what your mind just blocked out: He's
Floyd | dead. His arms lie too limp, his body lacks all the subtle movements
Floyd | of life. The hood of his yellow oilskin jacket is pulled back,
Floyd | revealing tousled black hair. He looks vulnerable and young,
Floyd | touchingly out of place. A residue of foam still lingers around his
Floyd | mouth, the rest washed away by the rain.

Jacqueline says, "A person? In this weather?!"
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "x person"
Floyd | The dead man is sitting at the table, in a yellow oilskin jacket, dead
Floyd | and wet and helpless.
Floyd |

DavidW says, "dead person"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x foam"
Floyd | The dead man is sitting at the table, in a yellow oilskin jacket, dead
Floyd | and wet and helpless.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Oh, so that's why - yeah."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x jacket"
Floyd | You'd expect a fisherman to wear one of those. It's waterproof and
Floyd | bright-yellow.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "search it"
Floyd | You search the the big pockets guiltily. You find a small pill bottle.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x bottle"
Floyd | A small white plastic bottle. Seems to be a lorazepam substitute, some
Floyd | sort of sleeping pill. It's empty.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says, "sorry, I checked the about and it rolled the description off the screen"
smartgenes says, "get bottle"
smartgenes says (to Floyd), "get bottle"
Floyd | You already have that.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "No worries. It's hard to ever know if about will just be a paragraph or a menu system."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "take coat"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.

Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "take jacket"
Floyd | You don't want to disturb him.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
smartgenes says (to Floyd), "examine picnic table"
Floyd | The table and the bench are bolted together. Both are actually made of
Floyd | wood, dark and wet. You glimpse a hint of countless carved names,
Floyd | dates, obscenities.
Floyd |

Floyd | I didn't understand that sentence.

Gerynar says, "sure"
DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "You sound unsure."
Fang says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying:
Floyd | a pill bottle
Floyd | a cast (being worn)
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Nah, I'm sure."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |
Floyd | At the foot of the lighthouse
Floyd | The brickwork of the tower itself is dark like an underexposed black
Floyd | and white picture. It looms high above you, like a faceless giant
Floyd | standing eternal guard.
Floyd |
Floyd | The stainless steel entrance door looks modern in comparison. It even
Floyd | has an electric bell.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang asks, "shouldn't we do something about the dead guy?"
Fang asks, "instead of continuing our vacation?"
Jacqueline says, "We took his pill bottle."
Jacqueline says, "We'll call from the lighthouse"
DavidW says (to Fang), "We don't have a cell phone."
Fang says (to Floyd), "x bell"
Floyd | It's a small, round, red button.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says, "We took the pills so he can't get any deader"
Fang says (to Floyd), "push bell"
Floyd | You hammer your cold fist on the bell and hear a faint shrilling sound
Floyd | somewhere inside.
Floyd |
Floyd | A woman in a thick woolen sweater and oilskin pants opens the door.
Floyd | She seems to be in her late forties, and has friendly wrinkles around
Floyd | her eyes. For a moment she blinks with an almost comical expression of
Floyd | surprise, then she pulls you inside and slams the door.
Floyd | "Hello, stranger" she muses, studying you through squinted eyes. "I'm
Floyd | Laura Davidson, the lighthouse keeper."
Floyd | She smiles. You instantly feel at home.
Floyd |
Floyd | In the Lighthouse
Floyd | This circular room is dominated by the red brickwork and the circular
Floyd | stairs leading upwards, rusty metal like the door. The furniture seems
Floyd | to be an afterthought.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a trapdoor in the floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | The stainless steel entrance door looks modern in comparison.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is an antique wooden cupboard in the corner.
Floyd |
Floyd | Mrs. Davidson stands her, slightly squinting, and smiling.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says (to Floyd), "tell davidson about corpse"
Floyd | [Use TALK TO to interact with characters.]
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says (to Floyd), "talk to davidson"
Floyd | "Hello, Mrs. Davidson. Nice to let me in."
Floyd | She squints at you again. "You aren't the Johnson boy, are you?"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] "That must be the young man I found ... outside. He's dead. At the
Floyd | picnic table. He committed suicide."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | Her eyes are suddenly wide with shock. "Sui- Suicide?" She shakes her
Floyd | head. "That coward." Then she sighs - "Nevermind, there is a telephone
Floyd | at the top. We have to call the cops."
Floyd |
Floyd | You climb what feels like a hundred clanking, metal stairs. The cold
Floyd | metal of the railing bites your hand, rust flakes sticking to your
Floyd | white, waxy skin.
Floyd |
Floyd | At the top of the lighthouse
Floyd | The light of the big lantern blinds you every few seconds. Nothing but
Floyd | a rusty railing keeps you from plunging headfirst into the roaring
Floyd | sea. In the distance, the thunderstorm is raging ceaselessly, as if
Floyd | ancient gods roar war at civilization.
Floyd |
Floyd | Mrs. Davidson arrives behind you, resting at the top of the stairs for
Floyd | a moment to catch her breath.
Floyd |
Floyd | The wind picks up for a moment, almost throwing you off balance, rain
Floyd | drops hitting you in painful volleys.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says, "the woman is suspicious"
Nitku asks, "Did the pills mean he killed himself?"
Jacqueline says, "I thought that."
Gerynar says, "we might be assuming it's suicide"
Jacqueline says, "But who knows."
Gerynar says, "The shadow knows"
Fang says (to Floyd), "l"

Floyd |
Floyd | For a moment, you think you hear the fog horn of a ship, somewhere out
Floyd | at sea.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Also, there're some very nice touches here. The carvings in the picnic table description, her having to catch her breath. Things you wouldn't think of by default that add to the feel."
Fang says (to Floyd), "x davidson"
Floyd | Laura must be in her late forties, with the first grey streaks in her
Floyd | black hair. She has a friendly, wrinkled face, fitting perfectly for a
Floyd | lighthouse keeper who spends a lot of time at the sea and with
Floyd | tourists.
Floyd | She is hiding something in her hand - you catch a glimpse of metal.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku clears the save counter.
Nitku says (to Floyd), "SAVE"
Nitku says (to Floyd), "cf1"
Floyd | Enter saved game to store: Ok.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "oho"
DavidW asks, "I don't see a telephone, do you?"
smartgenes says (to Floyd), "ask her to open hand"
Floyd | I didn't understand that sentence.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x metal"
Fang says (to Floyd), "x hand"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline asks, "Also, um. Did you say these were supposed to be scary?"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Is she about to stab us? THAT IS NOT VERY NICE."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "talk to laura"
Floyd | You turn to her and open your mouth, but she looks at you as if she's
Floyd | been caught red-handed. You notice a flash from her hand - as if she's
Floyd | carrying something made of steel.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
djfletch says, "quick, push her over the rail"
Jacqueline asks, "What?"
smartgenes says, "do aikido on her"
Gerynar says, "with our pale, waxy skin, we might be a vampire, so we're hard to kill"
Fang says (to Floyd), "talk to her"
Floyd | You turn to her and open your mouth, but she looks at you as if she's
Floyd | been caught red-handed. You notice a flash from her hand - as if she's
Floyd | carrying something made of steel.
Floyd |
Floyd | Suddenly, Mrs. Davidson jumps at you. At first you think she fell, but
Floyd | then you feel a sudden, burning pain in your side. Almost immediately,
Floyd | your body goes limp and numb with shock. Your legs falter under you,
Floyd | and the woman holds you gently, as you both sink to the ground, almost
Floyd | like lovers.
Floyd | Her grey eyes are dark with sorrow, as she whispers: "I'm sorry, I'm
Floyd | so sorry, it had to be..." You look at her, feeling perplexingly
Floyd | guilty at the motherly look in her eyes. Then color fades from the
Floyd | world, slowly, and above you the light circles and circles.
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | *** You have died ***

Floyd |
Floyd | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game or QUIT?
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "GAH"
DavidW says, "I don't want to kill her."
Fang exclaims, "too late!"
Jacqueline says, "So, um, she's one of those nice looking but really crazy people."
Jacqueline says, "Well, that was fun."
Fang says (to Floyd), "undo"
Floyd | At the top of the lighthouse
Floyd | [Previous turn undone.]
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Just kidding. Let's try again."
Fang says (to Floyd), "duck"
Floyd | I didn't understand that sentence.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "push woman"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "go down"
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "push davidson"
Floyd | You tackle her with your good shoulder - she screams, more surprised
Floyd | than scared, as she falls down the stairs flailing. Her head makes a
Floyd | sickening sound, and you wince at the muffled sound her body makes as
Floyd | it hits the ground below.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Gerynar says, "yeah...what DW said"
DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "well. Now you're in trouble."
Jacqueline says, "Oh, um. We can undo if you want."
smartgenes asks, "disarm her?"
Fang says, "nvm, Jacq has already picked the violent solution"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "I had a premonition that she was gonna kill us!"
Fang shakes his head at Jacq.
Gerynar says, "snrk"
DavidW says, "A likely story. Tell it to the judge."
Jacqueline says, "I have a mystic psychic ability tied to the magic word undo."
smartgenes says (to Floyd), "we'll have the knife ready for the judge later"
Floyd | I didn't understand that sentence.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Well, since I've killed her, let's go check her out."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "d"
Floyd | As you arrive at the foot of the stairs, Laura looks up at you from a
Floyd | pool of blood. "Listen kid", she whispers, "it had to be... I'm so
Floyd | sorry. It has to be fed. It's our pledge. To keep the mother away.
Floyd | Please understand" - she's wheezing now, something important inside
Floyd | her broken. Her eyes are dark with death - "we had to." She doesn't
Floyd | roll her eyes. There is no sudden lightning. The thunderstorm just
Floyd | wails at the lighthouse walls, as if it were you conscience, trying to
Floyd | get in.
Floyd |
Floyd | In the Lighthouse
Floyd | The stainless steel entrance door looks modern in comparison.
Floyd |
Floyd | A weird dagger lies here.
Floyd |
Floyd | Laura Davidson lies here, twisted and dead.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a trapdoor in the floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is an antique wooden cupboard in the corner.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can also see a keyring (on which are a steel key, a crystal key
Floyd | and a bronze key) here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Or HAVE I? Watch her come back to life, as horror movie murderers so often do."
Fang says (to Floyd), "x dagger"
Floyd | It's a short, double-bladed dagger. It looks incredibly old, but the
Floyd | point is still sharp.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says, "Stab her a couple of times just to make sure"
smartgenes says, "lol Laura D lies here, twisted & dead... like an afterthought"
Fang says, "IT WAS ONLY AN ACCIDENT"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take dagger and keyring"
Floyd | dagger: Taken.
Floyd | keyring: Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "search laura"
Floyd | You find nothing of interest.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Gerynar says (to Floyd), "x keys"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "I just meant to push her away, not to sacrifice her to the whatever it is."
Jacqueline says, "Honest, judge."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x cupboard"
Floyd | You can't see inside, since the cupboard is closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open it"
Floyd | You open the cupboard, revealing a wooden box.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x box"
Floyd | You can't see inside, since the wooden box is closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
smartgenes says (to Floyd), "open box"
Floyd | You open the wooden box, revealing a flare gun.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x gun"
Floyd | It looks old, but is in good shape. It seems to be loaded.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take it"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says, "let's look for a phone"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x furniture"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x crystal key"
Floyd | This is a sight to behold. The crystal substance makes it luminous,
Floyd | and the sheer beauty of it makes it seem unreal.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline asks, "You want to turn us in?"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x bronze key"
Floyd | It's a thick bronze key, tarnished and scratched.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x steel key"
Floyd | It's a modern, steel key.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Fang says, "IT WAS ONLY AN ACCIDENT"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x trapdoor"
Floyd | This is clearly a trapdoor - the wood is different from the
Floyd | surrounding floor, and it has big metal hinges. The small lock on it
Floyd | looks amazing; it's made of crystal and has strange carvings on it -
Floyd | human figures and some sort of sea monster. It's too tiny to make out
Floyd | properly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "That is true."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x carvings"
Floyd | This is clearly a trapdoor - the wood is different from the

Floyd | human figures and some sort of sea monster. It's too tiny to make out
Floyd | properly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "You're right. Best not to get nervous and anticipate that we won't be believed."
DavidW says, "hm. If we fed the sleeping pill suicide guy to the sea monster, that might make the sea monster sleepy as well. Might be useful."
Fang says, "so are we going to do the smart genre aware thing"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Heehee"
Fang asks, "or the standard horror protagonist thing?"
Nitku says, ""It's too tiny to make out properly" is a that's what she said -joke just waiting to happen"
DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "I'm serious. Go get the body."
Jacqueline says, "Um, ok."
Jacqueline says, "I'm not that strong but I'll try."

Floyd | Recess in the Cliff
Floyd | You are standing in a small recess. This small space feels old and
Floyd | inhospitable.

Floyd | The stainless steel entrance door looks modern in comparison.

Floyd | As you step outside, you hear a roar behind you, audible above the
Floyd | thunderous storm - filled with fear and pain and rage. A behemoth,
Floyd | some unthinkable monstrosity from the lightless depths, has taken to
Floyd | land. Car-sized hand grab the lighthouse and shake it, screaming
Floyd | questions at it in a language worthy of giants. You fall to the ground
Floyd | and cover your ears, babbling in terror as the building starts to
Floyd | fall. You scramble back to your feet, clothes and face muddy, and
Floyd | start to run.
Floyd | You run for a long time.

Jacqueline says, "I guess we should have played these at Halloween, except we're always on hiatus then. Maybe we should make an exception on the closest weekend to Halloween this coming year."
DavidW says, "perhaps, yeah"
smartgenes asks, "we broke the pact?"
Jacqueline says, "There are some good scary games out there."
Jacqueline says (to smartgenes), "Yeah, the pact to feed bodies to the child to appease the mother."
Jacqueline asks, "So, search for another ending, or play a different one?"
DavidW asks, "I'm not sure what other ending to try. Shoot the guy at the picnic table?"
Nitku says, "Let's move on to the next one"
smartgenes says, "there must be more to the lighthouse"
DavidW says, "I'm okay with going to the next one"
Gerynar says, "me too"
Jacqueline says, "I am as well."
