ClubFloyd Transcript:
Rover's Day Out by Jack Welch and Ben Collins-Sussman

As played on ifMUD on December 12, 2009

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Rover's Day Out, written by Jack Welch and Ben Collins-Sussman. Rover's Day Out was originally released as part of the 2009 Interactive Fiction Competition, where it took first place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Jacqueline says, "Right, but I don't think there is on this game for some reason."
DavidW asks, "It's when the > doesn't appear that we... what?"
Jacqueline says, "If memory serves from our test last week."
Touchy asks, "Does anybody want to drive?"
DavidW says, "That's gonna be awkward."
DavidW asks, "No prompt?"
Benjor asks, "did we do something odd, jack, to prevent a prompt?"
DavidW says, "We might still be in prologue."
dhakajack says, "I don't think so, unless it was something specific to our mods for this version"
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd | >I beg your pardon?
Floyd |
Benjor says, "nope, there's a prompt showing now. there should be."

DavidW says, "That's really weird."
Benjor says, "sure is."
Touchy asks, "What did you write this in?"
DavidW says, "So it's no longer >GET WRENCH, it's GET WRENCH >"
DavidW says, "It's in I7."
Touchy says, "Let's call it PIF for prefix IF."
Benjor says, "gotta be a floyd bug. straight up i7 with no changes to the prompt."
Touchy asks, "That's odd. Isn't IF usually compatible with floyd?"
DavidW says, "I've never seen this effect before."
Benjor says, "could be a glulxe thing"
jnc arrives, full of funk, but no fun. DavidW says, "We've played Glulx games here too."

Benjor says, "is there really confusion about when it's okay to give a command? floyd spews the whole response at once."
jnc asks, "Have I missed 15 min or 1:15?"
jnc says, "I see in scrollback somebody said 'we moved it up an hour'"
Benjor says, "you've missed 4 mins"
Touchy says, "No, that was from earlier this year."
Touchy says, "We didn't do anything yet."
DavidW says (to Benjor), "The confusion is that we can't tell, yes. Normally, absence of a prompt means we should just press space."
Touchy says, "so..."
jnc says, "Cool"
Touchy says (to Floyd), "wake up"

Floyd | ACU -> INITIALIZE : TRUE
Floyd |
Jacqueline says, "Hm, yeah. Normally Floyd prints the text, then skips a line and says >"
Jacqueline says, "But hopefully that's not a big deal for you guys."
DavidW asks, "I'm a bit lost in what's happening in game, also. We're inside Janet's game and we are -- who?"
Jacqueline asks (of jnc), "You've not played this either, right?"
jnc asks, "Never done one of these before - can anyone jump in with a command or do we all suggest things to Touchy?"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "That'll become apparent, I think."
Touchy says (to jnc), "Usually we only designate a driver if it gets to confusing."
DavidW asks, "And what;s all the ACU biz?"
DavidW asks, "Air Conditioner Unit?"
Benjor says, "or you can all just start over, to let the newcomers read the intro text." Jacqueline says, "Although, now, with a couple poeople showing up late, perhaps it wouldn't hurt to restart. Just a suggestion."
Touchy says, "And I'm at a total loss at what's going on I'm just following the games' suggestions."
Benjor says, "you're only a few commands in." Touchy says, "Alright, hit it."
DavidW says (to Touchy), "I wanted to read the help. As suggested."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "restart" Touchy says, "(the reset)"
Jacqueline says, "Oh, well, that'd work, too."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "help" Jacqueline asks, "Wait, where is Floyd, guys?"

DavidW says, "Something tells me that the metacommands aren't standard in this game."
Jacqueline says, "Anyway, just play through until you get a prompt (there's a few 'green button'/spacebar moves first) and then go for >HELP"
Nitku says, "I remember there was at least one game before where the > jumped there"
Jacqueline says (to Nitku), "I seem to remember that as well."
Nitku says, "Something to do with glulx and Floyd not playing nice together"
Benjor says, "after the beep beep beep you should have your first prompt, and 'help' should work"
DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "Except we don't see prompts unless we type in a command."

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Most adventure games are turn-based, rather than timed. Take as long
Floyd | as you want to think about your actions. The game gives you some
Floyd | information, such as a description of the room that you are in and

Floyd | what objects it contains, and then it is up to you to say what you are
Floyd | doing. You can enter your "move" by typing it at the command prompt,
Floyd | which looks like a "greater than" sign: >
Floyd |
Floyd | For example, let's say you are in the kitchen, and there is an avocado
Floyd | on the counter. To get more information about the avocado, you could

Floyd | say "examine avocado", and learn what it looks like.
Floyd |
Floyd | Not every command that you can think of will work, so you might need
Floyd | to try some rephrasing. In general, you should not use punctuation.
Floyd | The only exception is when you want to direct a question or command to
Floyd | someone or something else. In such cases, you can say the name of the

Floyd | person or thing to whom you are addressing your remark, followed by a
Floyd | command and then the question or command. For example, you could say:
Floyd | "Eugene, give me the axe".

Floyd | This game is designed to run on a virtual machine, some flavor of
Floyd | Glulx interpreter. You are, no doubt, using some implementation of the
Floyd | Glulx interpreter written for your specific hardware -- it could be
Floyd | your entertainment corner, hologoggles, dishwasher, cortical implant

Floyd | -- whatever. Even if you are using some old silicon-semiconductor
Floyd | clunker from the International days, it should still work. We've made
Floyd | every effort to test it on a number of platforms, but these tests are
Floyd | far from comprehensive. So far as we know, there are no
Floyd | interpreter-specific issues. However, if the game doesn't run right
Floyd | for you, you could try another interpreter and see if that fixes the

Floyd | situation.
Floyd |
Floyd | Whether you think the problem is the interpreter or the game itself,

Floyd | Help us splotch bugs! In this case, we're not referring to the
Floyd | plastic-eating cockroaches responsible for so many dome failures in

Floyd | the last few years, but to errors in the game itself. This game was,
Floyd | in part, written by humans, so eras are all but certainly present. The
Floyd | more freedom you have in your actions, the more likely it is that
Floyd | you'll expose some unknown weakness in the game. What should you do if
Floyd | you elicit such an error? First, you can gloat for a reasonable
Floyd | amount of time (this is a judgement call) about how very slick you are

Floyd | to have uncovered the hitherto unknown fault. Then, you can be a good
Floyd | citizen and us know about it so we can fix it in the next update, and
Floyd | spare the next several billion people the same painful experience.
Floyd | There's no monetary reward for finding errors, but your name will

Floyd |
Floyd | David: Is the static charge neutralization part of the script?

Floyd | Janet: No, that's the point of the ACU -- it isn't a set
Floyd | script. As we throw malfunctions at it in these simulations,
Floyd | the ACU responds appropriately. We can't, for instance,
Floyd | know that Valkyrie will accumulate a static charge
Floyd | in a particular area, so the ACU has to be flexible

Floyd |

Floyd | Your late fianc? gave you the photo when you began working on the
Floyd | Valkyrie Project as a graduate student -- a happier time before the
Floyd | Independence War with Earth, and the attacks on Mars by Earth's
Floyd | Myomita Corporation. Back then, Valkyrie's experimental Casimir Drive
Floyd | was an exciting technological adventure, rather than a military
Floyd | priority. Now the Valkyrie is Mars' only chance to recover data from a

Floyd | recently discovered space probe marooned in deep space. For whatever
Floyd | reason, MARSpace feels that probe could hold information that could
Floyd | finally give Mars the upper hand in its competition with Earth.
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |

Floyd | David: Why did we lose audio?
Floyd | Janet: I've muted the ACU's memories -- they are, after all,
Floyd | a bit personal. We don't need to hear them, but
Floyd | they may be useful for the ACU to come up to speed.
Floyd | David: That's fine. How much can the ACU remember, though?
Floyd | Janet: It's based on my own synaptic scan, so it can willfully

Floyd | remember a wide variety of subjects -- almost any
Floyd | major component of my life, important events, and
Floyd | so on. It adds depth to its decisions.
Floyd | David: If you say so. I'd hate to know what it remembers

Floyd | when Martian missiles struck Luna City, Beijing and S?o Paulo. Under
Floyd | terms of the treaty, the Martian government was granted autonomy, but

Floyd | Mars remains economically dominated by Earth, except for MARSpace.

Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "remember marspace"
Floyd | >MARSpace began as an extension of the Myomita corporation space
Floyd | program but was absorbed by the People's Government of Mars after the
Floyd | War of Independence. Before the war, MARSpace serviced almost all

Floyd | condensate drive vessels engaged in commerce between the Solar System
Floyd | and Earth's Interstellar Territories. Since the war, MARSpace has

DavidW says (to Floyd), "remember valkyrie"

Floyd | commercial exploitation. The Valkyrie is the first ship to incorporate
Floyd | the Casimir Drive, giving it unprecedented speed and range. It is

DavidW says (to Floyd), "remember casimir drive"

Floyd | ten years. By doing largely incomprehensible things to time/space, the
Floyd | Casimir Drive can translate a ship incredible distances in a fraction

Floyd | of the time and energy that would be required by a ship equipped with
Floyd | condensate drive.
Floyd |
Floyd | The one drawback to Casimir technology, at least in its current
Floyd | implementation, is that such trips are lethal to biological organisms,
Floyd | hence the need for the ACU. Human test subjects exposed even briefly

Floyd | to Casimir gradients experienced intense dreams and nightmares; those
Floyd | with longer exposures died during a state of heavy REM activity. Even
Floyd | the ACU is not immune to the quantum distortions responsible for this
Floyd | effect and is expected to experience dream states while in hibernation
Floyd | mode during Casimir jumps.

Floyd | Rover sniffs the air and tears away from the picnic blanket. You and

Floyd | Rover bounds over the hedges, howling wildly, and spooks a xihuahua
Floyd | that had been playing with a tiny red ball. The so-called "shaved rat"
Floyd | gulps an oversized portion of air, extends its membranous ears, and
Floyd | flies across the park into the arms of a stooped grey-haired woman

Floyd | with a cane. Rover picks up the ball triumphantly, ignoring the
Floyd | piercing wavetrain of yips and indignant scolding coming,
Floyd | respectively, from the xihuahua and its owner. Shaking her cane limply
Floyd | towards Rover, she admonishes in a strong Earth accent "That mongrel
Floyd | should be on a leash!" Her own, unleashed, uncollared neodog stares
Floyd | accusingly from the safety of her arms, its distensible ribs
