ClubFloyd Transcript:
Sam Fortune - Private Investigator by Steve Blanding

As played on ifMUD on July 25, 2009

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Sam Fortune - Private Investigator, written by Steve Blanding. Sam Fortune - Private Investigator is a mystery game presented as a radio play sponsored by Muskrat Cigarettes. It was released in May 2009 and you can visit its homepage here. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

DavidW arrives, full of fun and funk. DavidW says, "Hi everyone. Thanks for waiting."
Nitku says, "I've played this one a little bit."
DavidW says, "Today's game is Sam Fortune - Private Investigator by Steve Blanding."
DavidW asks, "I've only seen the intro. Shall we begin?"
Nitku says, "It's definitely cruel and has timed puzzles, so we should expect to do the save/restore dance quite often."
DavidW says, "ooh, Cruel, huh? That could be tricky."
DavidW clears the save counter.
DavidW says (to Floyd), "load samfortune"

Floyd | information about this game.)
Floyd |
Floyd | Tonight's drama: The Case of the Missing Playboy!
Floyd |
Floyd | Sponsored by Muskrat Cigarettes.
Floyd |
Floyd | Folks, do you know that four out of five doctors recommend Muskrat
Floyd | Cigarettes for their patients who smoke? It's true! That's because
Floyd | Muskrat Cigarettes have been clinically proven to taste better, smoke
Floyd | smoother, and improve respiratory health! So the next time you crave a
Floyd | good smoke, choose Muskrat Cigarettes! You'll be glad you did.
Floyd |
Floyd | And now for Act I of tonight's drama....
Floyd |
Floyd | It was an afternoon much like any other afternoon. I was alone in my
Floyd | office. It seems I was always alone.
Floyd |
Floyd | Business had been slow. I was reduced to practicing my witty banter
Floyd | with my friends Jack and Daniel. Unfortunately for me, they weren't
Floyd | very much for conversation. We'd been conversing just long enough that
Floyd | I was beginning to feel that my banter really WAS witty. But not so
Floyd | much that I was beginning to think they'd talk back.
Floyd |
Floyd | Sam's Office
Floyd | You are Sam Fortune, a private investigator who, at the moment, has
Floyd | very little to investigate. Your office is on the fifth floor of a
Floyd | crummy old office building in the lower east side.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a single dingy window in the west wall, directly opposite the
Floyd | only door.
Floyd |
Floyd | The sun streaming throught the Venetian blinds traces bars across the
Floyd | desk that sits in the middle of the room. Bars like the bars of a
Floyd | prison cell.
Floyd |
Floyd | On the wooden desk are a bottle of whiskey and a telephone.
Floyd |
Floyd | A battered old filing cabinet stands in the corner.
Floyd |
Floyd | An old desk chair sits behind the desk.
Floyd |
Floyd | A plain guest chair is strategically placed in front of the desk.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "Unfortunately, inky and Jacqueline both couldn't make it to today's session."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | Sam Fortune, private investigator and all American sap, is a pretty
Floyd | nice specimen if you do say so yourself. Six feet tall with broad
Floyd | shoulders and a jaw that could have been cut from a block of stone.
Floyd | It's no wonder that the dames go for you. If you were a dame, you would
Floyd | too.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying nothing.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look through window"
Floyd | Peering through the filthy grime reveals very little. Just the same old
Floyd | lonely street in the same old lonely part of town.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x bottle"
Floyd | Tennessee's finest. Comfort in a bottle.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "I didn't see any exits listed."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "exits"
Floyd | The obvious exits are east and outside.
Floyd |
Floyd | (Use EXITS ON to enable the status line exit lister and EXITS OFF to
Floyd | turn it off.)
Floyd |
Nitku says, "It said door is opposite to the window to the west"
Lucea arrives, full of fun and funk. DavidW says, "ah. So it did."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x desk"
Floyd | (the wooden desk)
Floyd | It's a very plain wooden desk with a single shabby drawer. Someday
Floyd | perhaps you'll be able to afford mahogany.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open drawer"
Floyd | (the desk drawer)
Floyd | It's locked. Now if only you could remember where you put that key.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "remember key"
Floyd | I didn't understand that sentence.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "think about key"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to think.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look under desk"
Floyd | (the wooden desk)
Floyd | You find nothing of interest.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x cabinet"
Floyd | (the filing cabinet)
Floyd | The filing cabinet stands in the corner of the office. It has two
Floyd | drawers: a top drawer, and (you guessed it, pal) a bottom drawer. This
Floyd | is where you keep all your important files. In other words, it's mostly
Floyd | empty.
Floyd |
Lucea says, "only mostly"
DavidW says, "We probably filed it under K for key."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open top drawer"
Floyd | You open the top drawer of the filing cabinet, revealing some file
Floyd | folders marked A to M.
Floyd |
Fang arrives, full of neither funk nor fun.
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x folder k"
Floyd | You see several file folders marked A to M in nearly alphabetical
Floyd | order.
Floyd |
Floyd | Thumbing to the file marked "K" you look inside and retrieve a small
Floyd | key which you place in your pocket.
Floyd |
Fang asks, "what are we playing? Have we started?"
Lucea says, "nice"
DavidW says, "ha. I was right!"
* Gunther has joined the channel.
DavidW says (to Fang), "yes. We just started."
DavidW says, "We're playing Sam Fortune - Private Investigator."
Fang says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | Sam's Office
Floyd | Your office is on the fifth floor of a crummy old office building in
Floyd | the lower east side.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a single dingy window in the west wall, directly opposite the
Floyd | only door.
Floyd |
Floyd | The sun streaming throught the Venetian blinds traces bars across the
Floyd | desk that sits in the middle of the room. Bars like the bars of a

Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd | A battered old filing cabinet stands in the corner.
Floyd |
Floyd | An old desk chair sits behind the desk.
Floyd |
Floyd | A plain guest chair is strategically placed in front of the desk.
Floyd |
Nitku says, "The game seems to have every cliche of the genre there is. Not sure if that's intentional."
Lucea says, "looks like a job for >get all"
DavidW asks (of Nitku), "I think it's probably intentional. Wouldn't it be difficult to accidently use every cliche?"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "unlock drawer with key"
Floyd | (the desk drawer with the small key)
Floyd | You unlock the desk drawer.
Floyd |
Nitku says, "It would fit the radio show theme"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open drawer"
Floyd | (the desk drawer)
Floyd | You open the desk drawer, revealing a revolver.
Floyd |
Lucea says, "you'd expect so"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x revolver"
Floyd | Your best friend. It's just a shame that you don't actually have any
Floyd | bullets. Still, it's amazing how people can react to the mere sight of
Floyd | a heater.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take it"
Floyd | Just as soon as you pick up the revolver there is a quiet rap at the
Floyd | door. You quickly put the revolver in your pocket.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. Come on in. The door's unlocked."
Floyd |
Floyd | The door opens and in walks a tall redhead with a knockout figure in
Floyd | the kind of outfit that shouts class.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Are you Sam Fortune?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's what it says on my birth certificate, doll. And just who might
Floyd | you be?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "My name is Irene Scarlet."
Floyd |
Floyd | "It's a pleasure, sweetheart. Why don't you have a seat?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Thank you, Mr. Fortune."
Floyd |
Floyd | [Your score has just gone up by one point.]
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "SAVE"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "cf1"
Floyd | Enter saved game to store: Ok.
Floyd |
Nitku says (to Floyd), "give seat to woman"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "x irene"
Floyd | Irene Scarlet is quite a dish. Her red hair cascades about her
Floyd | shoulders in gentle waves. She wears a fashionably cut dress which
Floyd | shows off her delicious figure in a most delightful way.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "sit on desk chair"
Floyd | You get onto the desk chair.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "close door"
Floyd | That's already closed.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "I'm glad Miss Scarlet isn't a fish."
Fang says (to Floyd), "ask irene about irene"
Floyd | [Use TALK TO to interact with characters.]
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "talk to irene"
Floyd | Turning to Irene you say, "Hello there."
Floyd |
Floyd | She gives you one of those looks that makes you think she likes what
Floyd | she sees.
Floyd |
Floyd | Self-consciously you slide the bottle inside the desk drawer before
Floyd | getting down to business.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask her to have dinner with you.
Floyd | [2] Ask her what she wants.
Floyd |
Fang says, "smooth"
DavidW says, "hee"
Lucea says, "1 can lead to nothing but failure"
Nitku says, "Gotta have priorities"
Fang asks, "so, how professional is Fortune going to be?"
DavidW says (to Fang), "Go ahead and drive.. a hard... bargain."
Fang says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "So, sweetheart, I hope I'm not being too forward but perhaps sometime
Floyd | you and I could get together over a nice hot meal. You interested?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Irene smiles just a little and says, "Perhaps some other time, Mr.
Floyd | Fortune, but just now I'm afraid that I'm here on business."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask her what she wants.
Floyd |
Lucea says, "told you"
Fang says, "now, now, there's still hope"
Fang says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "So what brings a nice up-class dame like you to my little office?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "You're a private investigator aren't you?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's what it says on my license."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, I was hoping that I might use your services. You see, a friend
Floyd | of mine has gone missing."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask Irene about herself.
Floyd | [2] Ask about her friend.
Floyd | [3] Tell Irene your rates.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "So tell me a little about yourself. How do you fit into this picture."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, Mr. Fortune, my father is James Scarlet, the founder of Scarlet
Floyd | Herring, one of the more successful fishing operations in this town."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh THAT Irene Scarlet!"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yes. That Irene Scarlet. Anyway, I've been friends with Bob for a very
Floyd | long time and when he didn't show up for our lunch appointment today I
Floyd | got worried. That's why I came to see you."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about her friend.
Floyd | [2] Tell Irene your rates.
Floyd |
Fang says, "geez, I would have no idea who runs successful fishing operations in my town"
Fang says, "er, if Oxford wasn't landlocked"
DavidW says, "heh heh"
Lucea asks, "how about unsuccessful?"
Fang says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Well, Red, tell me about this missing friend of yours."
Floyd |
Floyd | "His name is Bob Watterson. He and I go way back. He's one of the local
Floyd | society set. Anyway, we were out dancing at the Top Cat Club last night
Floyd | with some of our friends. Toward the end of the evening it looked as if
Floyd | something was bothering him but he wouldn't say what it was. I didn't
Floyd | think much of it until today. We had agreed to meet for lunch but,"
Floyd | stifling the merest hint of a sob, "but he never showed up!
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh, Sam, I know you think I'm probably being silly but I'm worried
Floyd | about him. He never misses a lunch date and I'm just sure something has
Floyd | heppend to him. Say you'll help me find him."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask if she's gone to the police.
Floyd | [2] Tell Irene your rates.
Floyd | [3] Agree to take the case.
Floyd | [4] Decline the case.
Floyd |
Fang says, "oh, she's got a boyfriend"
Fang says, "4"
Lucea says, "eh, at least try 2"
Lucea says, "this calls for a bit of extortion"
Fang says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | "I charge $25 a day plus expenses. But I don't suppose that would be a
Floyd | problem for a dame like you."
Floyd |
Floyd | Irene says rather gravely, "No. That will be fine."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask if she's gone to the police.
Floyd | [2] Agree to take the case.
Floyd | [3] Decline the case.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "So, sister, something's puzzling me. Why come to me? Why not just go
Floyd | to the cops?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, Mr. Fortune, first of all, it's only been a few hours and I was
Floyd | afraid that they wouldn't take me seriously with him only being missing
Floyd | for such a short time."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah, I guess that figures. Go on."
Floyd |
Floyd | "And I was hoping to keep this kind of quiet. My family gets enough
Floyd | exposure as it is. That's what comes from having money. If I were to go
Floyd | to the police, well, I was afraid that the papers might catch wind of
Floyd | it."
Floyd |
Floyd | "And you'd find your name plastered all over the society pages...
Floyd | again."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Precisely."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Agree to take the case.
Floyd | [2] Decline the case.
Floyd |
Fang says, "exposure, eh? I guess fishing is a high impact business. Lands you in lots of hot water"
DavidW says, "yeah, those oceans are boiling."
Lucea says, "this isn't suspicious on her part at all!"
Gunther says, "oo, decline"
Fang says, "I guess we don't have a choice"
Gunther says, "just so we see"
Fang says (to Gunther), "you do it"
DavidW says, "well, I bet if we decline, the game ends. Or maybe not. One can try and see."
Gunther says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | After considering the matter you decide that you'd rather not get mixed
Floyd | up in all of this. "No dice, Red. I'm afraid that I'm just too busy to
Floyd | get mixed up with the upper crust these days. You see, I'm strictly a
Floyd | meat and potatoes kind of guy and all that champagne and caviar just
Floyd | doesn't agree with me. So if you'll kindly close the door on your way
Floyd | out, I'll return to my business."
Floyd |
Floyd | Irene looks shocked and for a minute a look of panic crosses her face
Floyd | before she...
Floyd |
Floyd | Your mother reaches over and switches off the radio. "I think that's
Floyd | enough radio for today. It's bed time and besides, all of that junk
Floyd | just rots your brain anyway."
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | *** You have lost. ***
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | In that game you scored 1 out of a possible 15, in 27 turns, earning
Floyd | you the rank of Drip.
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, QUIT or UNDO the
Floyd | previous turn?
Gunther says (to Floyd), "undo"
Floyd | Sam's Office
Floyd | [Previous turn undone.]
Floyd |
Gunther says, "BOring"
Fang says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | [You're still in the middle of a conversation. I need some kind of
Floyd | reaction from you to continue the scene. Enter a number, or say REPEAT
Floyd | to reacquaint yourself with your options.]
Floyd |
DavidW says, "aw, mom! Just when it was getting good!"
Fang says (to Floyd), "repeat"
Floyd | The available options are:
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Agree to take the case.
Floyd | [2] Decline the case.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Sure, sweetheart. Don't worry, kid. I'll find him. You run along and
Floyd | I'll be in touch."
Floyd |
Floyd | Irene gets up and says "Thank you so much, Mr. Fortune." before giving
Floyd | you a small wad of bills for expenses and telling you her phone number.
Floyd | Then she gracefully heads for the door. On her way out she pauses and
Floyd | looks over her shoulder for a second, giving you a brief look at her
Floyd | misty blue eyes. Then, she closes the door and she's gone.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, Sam," you say to yourself. "Looks like you're gonna be dining at
Floyd | the Top Cat Club tonight."
Floyd |
Floyd | [Your score has just gone up by one point.]
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying:
Floyd | expense money
Floyd | a revolver
Floyd | a small key
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "x money"
Floyd | A small roll of money which Irene gave you with which to pay your
Floyd | expenses. It's not a lot but it should be enough for now.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | Sam's Office (on the desk chair)
Floyd | Your office is on the fifth floor of a crummy old office building in

Floyd |

Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "stand"
Floyd | You get off the desk chair.

Floyd |
DavidW says, "I suspect we must go to the Top Cat Club next."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open bottom drawer"
Floyd | You open the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet, revealing some file
Floyd | folders marked N to Z.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x folder t"
Floyd | You see a handful of file folders marked N to Z in mostly alphabetical
Floyd | order.
Floyd |
Floyd | You thumb through a few of the folders but nothing really catches your
Floyd | interest at the moment. Perhaps if you knew what you were looking for
Floyd | this would yield better results.
Floyd |
inky arrives, full of fun, but no funk. DavidW says, "hey, inky"
inky says, "here I am at last"
inky asks, "how is the game going?"
DavidW says, "We haven't gone far in."
Fang says (to Floyd), "x folder s"
Floyd | You see a handful of file folders marked N to Z in mostly alphabetical
Floyd | order.
Floyd |
Floyd | You thumb idly through a few of the folders before deciding that there
Floyd | really isn't anything helpful to your current situation.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "x folder w"
Floyd | You see a handful of file folders marked N to Z in mostly alphabetical
Floyd | order.
Floyd |
Floyd | You thumb through a few of the folders but nothing really catches your
Floyd | interest at the moment.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "We have a revolver and a case: Irene Scarlet's 'friend' has gone missing, last seen at the Top Cat Club."
Fang says (to Floyd), "look for scarlet"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Fang asks, "is there a look up command?"
Nitku says (to Floyd), "look up top cat club from bottom drawer"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to look up.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Fang), "I'm not sure."
inky says (to Floyd), "look up scarlet in folder w"
Floyd | You discover nothing of interest in the file folders marked N to Z.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "consult folder w about scarlet"
Floyd | You discover nothing of interest in the file folders marked N to Z.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look up watterson in folder w"
Floyd | You discover nothing of interest in the file folders marked N to Z.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look up herring in folder h"
Floyd | You discover nothing of interest in the file folders marked A to M.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "take folders"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the file folders marked A to M or the file folders
Floyd | marked N to Z?
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "N"
Floyd | You had better leave those there. It took you nearly a full day the
Floyd | last time you had to sort them and you'd hate to have to do it again.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "I think we've done all we can with the folders for now. They might be useful later, though."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "phone Top Cat Club"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to phone the top drawer of the
Floyd | filing cabinet.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "phone club"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take phone"
Floyd | Picking up the telephone you pause to consider your options.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Call Clancy at the 21st precinct.
Floyd | [2] Call the Times.
Floyd | [3] Call Irene.
Floyd | [4] Call the Top Cat Club.
Floyd | [5] Hang up.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "4"
Floyd | You pick up the reciever and ask the operator to connect you to the Top
Floyd | Cat Club. In a minute you hear the whiney voice of the French ma?tre
Floyd | d'. "Ziz is zee Top Cat Club. Can eye help you, monsieur?"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask when they're open.
Floyd | [2] Ask about a reservation.
Floyd | [3] Hang up.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | Hey, pal. Can you tell me when you're open tonight?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oui, monsieur. We are open from seven until two am."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Thanks."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about a reservation.
Floyd | [2] Hang up.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Listen. I'd like to book a table for tonight."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh non, non, non. I am very sorry, monsieur, but we are very busy
Floyd | tonight. We do not take any more reservations for tonight. But if
Floyd | monsieur would care to come to zee club, I am sure zat zere will be
Floyd | space at zee bar."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. I may do that. Thanks."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Hang up.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | You put the receiver back on its cradle.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "hm. Is there a clock in the status bar? I hope not."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "time"
Floyd | I didn't understand that sentence.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd | The door is in the east wall, opposite the window.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Please press SPACE to continue.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | I left my office, walked down the four flights of stairs, headed
Floyd | outside and hailed a cab. I figured that if I wanted to get to the
Floyd | bottom of this, I'd need to go to where it all started.
Floyd |
Floyd | A few minutes later, the cab pulled up in front of a gleaming white
Floyd | high-rise building with one of those awnings over the revolving door.
Floyd | You know the kind. The kind that makes it seem like you're walking into
Floyd | the snout of an extremely large anteater. I took the elevator up to the
Floyd | 15th floor and found myself standing outside the entrance to Tony
Floyd | Gabriele's famous Top Cat Club, the most upscale dinner club in town.
Floyd |
Floyd | It was time to earn my daily bread.
Floyd |
Floyd | [This might be a good time to save your game.]
Floyd |
Floyd | Top Cat Club Lobby
Floyd | The waiting area is done up in the art deco style, all white and
Floyd | silver. Beside the club entrance is a lectern where the ma?tre d' is
Floyd | greeting customers and checking reservations. On the lectern is a round
Floyd | white logo with the silhouette of a cat wearing a top hat. Peeking
Floyd | through the crowd, it's clear that the joint is jumpin' tonight.
Floyd |
Floyd | When you're ready to leave, the elevator awaits you to the south. The
Floyd | club itself is to the north.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see some customers, the ma?tre d' and a lectern here.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "push save"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Fang says (to Floyd), "SAVE"
Fang says (to Floyd), "cf2"
Floyd | Enter saved game to store: Ok.
Floyd |
inky says, "hmm, characters didn't get rendered properly"
inky says, "wonder if that's a bug in the game source or a bug in floyd's terp"
inky says, "or a bug in floyd"
Nitku asks, "which characters?"
DavidW says, "ma?tre"
inky says, "in maitre d'"
inky asks (of DavidW), "oh, is that how you saw it?"
Nitku says, "I see them correctly."
inky says, "for me it's like maC.tre d'"

DavidW says, "I never see accented characters probably on ifmud."
DavidW says, "er, properly"
inky says (to Floyd), "x maitre"

Floyd | called "Jean Claude".

Floyd |
Floyd | You can see some customers, Jean Claude and a lectern here.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "'Johnny'"
Nitku says (to Floyd), "talk to jean claude"
Floyd | "Oui, monsieur. My name is Jean Claude. 'Ow may I 'elp you?"

Floyd |
Floyd | "I'm looking for a man named Bob Watterson. Do you know him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oui, monsieur. I know 'im very well. 'e comes 'ere most frequently."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask for a table.
Floyd | [2] Ask when he saw him last.
Floyd | [3] Ask if he knows anything about him.

Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd | "Thanks. Can you tell me any more about him? Do you know where he
Floyd | lives? What he does?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Non. Pardon me. I do not meddle with ze affairs of ze customers."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. I get it. Thanks anyway, bub."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask for a table.
Floyd | [2] Ask when he saw him last.
Floyd | [3] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Nitku says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | "When did you last see him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I saw 'im just last night, monsieur. It was with Miss Scarlet I think.
Floyd | Zat is usually who 'e is with."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask for a table.
Floyd | [2] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
crumple has had his fill of playing for now, and goes back to the Lounge. DavidW says, "yeah, I thought it unlikely the maitre d' would give us any new info."
Nitku says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "I'd like a table for one."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh non, non, non. I am very sorry, monsieur, but we are very busy
Floyd | tonight. We do not 'ave any more tables for tonight. But we do 'ave
Floyd | space at ze bar.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "Shame we can't ask about Irene or Tony or the club or anything else."
Nitku says, "The funny thing about French, German, Russian and Italian people is that they can never learn the words "yes" and "no" in English"
DavidW says, "On the other hand, we waste less time with the guy."
Nitku says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Thanks, bub."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Eet is my pleasure, monsieur."
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "x lectern"
Floyd | Aside from the cat-in-a-top-hat logo, there's really nothing all that
Floyd | interesting about the lectern.
Floyd |
Nitku says (to Floyd), "get it"
Floyd | That's fixed in place.
Floyd |
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x logo"
Floyd | Aside from the cat-in-a-top-hat logo, there's really nothing all that
Floyd | interesting about the lectern.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "Let's go inside the club."
inky says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |
Floyd | Top Cat Club
Floyd | You have to admit that this place is pretty swank. Like the lobby, it's
Floyd | all done up in art deco white and gleaming silver. The cavernous room
Floyd | is filled with tables, which in turn are filled with the
Floyd | upper-crustiest crumbs in this crummy city. There are so many tuxedos
Floyd | it looks like a penguin convention, and enough feathers to defrock a
Floyd | flock of ostriches.
Floyd |
Floyd | The central focus of the club is the dance floor, just south of the
Floyd | stage, which fills the entire north wall of the room. There is a small
Floyd | backstage door in the north wall, just to the side of the stage. A guy
Floyd | about the size of Mt. Rushmore guards the door.
Floyd |
Floyd | The bar is to the east. The lobby is south.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see the backstage door, the stage, some customers, some tables,
Floyd | some dancers and a guard here.
Floyd |
Floyd | Someone at one of the far tables sings Happy Birthday.
Floyd |
Floyd | You hear the sound of someone opening the backstage door.
Floyd |
Floyd | The band stops playing and the bandleader steps up to the microphone.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Ladies and gentlemen. Once again, the Top Cat Club is proud to present
Floyd | the star of our show, Miss Ginger Andrews!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The crowd erupts into applause, the lights go down, a spotlight
Floyd | illuminates the stage door and the most stunning blonde you have ever
Floyd | seen steps into the light, sashays over to center stage and proceeds to
Floyd | make love to the microphone.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "hello Jessica Rabbit"
DavidW says, "(A blonde named 'Ginger'?)"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x ginger"
Floyd | Wow! What a dish! Ginger Andrews is perhaps the most stunning blond you
Floyd | have ever seen. She stands about five foot seven and every inch a
Floyd | woman. She wears a glittering backless dress with a plunging neckline
Floyd | that barely conceals an ample bosom. Her blue eyes are dazzling. And
Floyd | her shapely legs... Wow!
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger's voice is heavenly as she sings a number from the Hit Parade.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x guard"
Floyd | This guy looks like someone cross-bred a gorilla with a pit bull.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger holds every man spellbound as she reaches the climax of a
Floyd | devilishly provocative number.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x bartender"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "I suggest heading east to the bar; see what the bartender has to say, if anything."
inky says (to Floyd), "x customers"
Floyd | The place is packed with tuxedo wearing men and glittering women.
Floyd |
Floyd | Brother, that Ginger dame can really sing.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "x backstage door"
Floyd | You see nothing special about the backstage door.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger brings the crowd to tears with a steamy love song.
Floyd |
Floyd | When Ginger's act comes to a close the spotlight goes out, the audience
Floyd | applauds, the house lights go back up, and Ginger begins working the
Floyd | room, moving from one fat-cat to another. It's very clear what every
Floyd | man in the room wants and she's all too happy to dangle it in front of
Floyd | them without giving them any of it.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "oh. Maybe we can talk to Ginger now."
Nitku says (to Floyd), "talk to customers"
Floyd | You strike up a conversation with some of the customers and try to
Floyd | steer it towards your missing man but it soon becomes apparent that
Floyd | this line is getting you nowhere. These guys aren't regulars.
Floyd |
Floyd | All eyes are on Ginger as she passes between the tables.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "talk to ginger"
Floyd | Prying Ginger away from her adoring public you flash her what you hope
Floyd | is your most charming smile and say, "Hello there, beautiful. My name
Floyd | is Sam. Got a minute?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger looks you over and says "Why not? Shoot, tough guy. What's on
Floyd | your mind? I mean besides that."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Compliment her singing.
Floyd | [2] Compliment her looks.
Floyd | [3] Ask her out.
Floyd | [4] Ask her about Bob.
Floyd | [5] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | The band plays something from the Hit Parade.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "You have a very healthy set of lungs there, baby. Where'd you learn to
Floyd | sing like that?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sunday school, Sam. Sunday school."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well you obviously had a first rate teacher."
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's very kind of you to say so, Sam."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Compliment her looks.
Floyd | [2] Ask her out.
Floyd | [3] Ask her about Bob.
Floyd | [4] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | Someone in the back of the club laughs loudly.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Baby, you are some piece of work. With a face like yours, I bet you
Floyd | have to circle the wagons whenever you so much as step outside."
Floyd |
Floyd | She smiles and says, "Flattery will get you everywhere, mister. You
Floyd | aren't so bad yourself."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask her out.
Floyd | [2] Ask her about Bob.
Floyd | [3] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | One of the couples in the club starts to argue but it quickly passes.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | "Hey, sweetheart, I'm looking for a friend of mine. His name's Bob
Floyd | Watterson. You know him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Who Bobby? Sure, I know him." She looks a little put off. You can't
Floyd | tell if it's because she's upset that you're not talking about her or
Floyd | if it's because she doesn't want to discuss her relationship with Bob.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Seen him around?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Not for a while. Hey, I barely know the guy. Let's talk about you
Floyd | instead."
Floyd |
Floyd | You let her steer the conversation back around to your favorite topic
Floyd | for a while: Sam Fortune. It's plain that she's an expert when it comes
Floyd | to stroking a man's ego.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask her out.
Floyd | [2] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | Someone from the crowd bumps into you and apologizes before continuing
Floyd | on.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "What time do you get off? How about you and me go somewhere for a
Floyd | drink?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I'd like that, Sam, but tonight's bad for me. Come by tomorrow and ask
Floyd | me again will ya?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sure, kid. You bet."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a brief lull in the music and the dancers return to their
Floyd | seats before the music starts and more take their places.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "See you around sweetheart."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh I'm sure you will, Sam. At least I certainly hope so."
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger flashes a brilliant smile at a portly man who is old enough to
Floyd | be her father. It looks like he'll go home happy.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "enter backstage"
Floyd | You can't, since the backstage door is in the way.
Floyd |
Floyd | Every man in the room watches as Ginger moves to another table.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "open backstage"
Floyd | Man-mountain over there doesn't say a word, but he doesn't let you open
Floyd | the door either. If you want to get backstage, you'll have to somehow
Floyd | get rid of the guard.
Floyd |
Floyd | A customer laughs at one of Ginger's jokes.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "I think we should visit the bar to the east."
inky says, "go for it"
DavidW says, "Or you can try talking to the guard, I guess."
inky says, "we can get a seat there"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x tables"
Floyd | It looks like business is booming. Not a single table remains vacant.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger briefly dances with one of the customers before returning him to
Floyd | his previous partner.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "talk to guard"
Floyd | You attempt to start a conversation with the guard but it quickly
Floyd | becomes obvious that conversation isn't his forte.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger's jewelry sparkles as she passes one of the stage lights.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd |
Floyd | Bar Area
Floyd | On the east side of the club, set back from the main area, is the bar
Floyd | area. It's almost as crowded as the rest of the joint but there's still
Floyd | enough room for you to slide up next to the bar.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see the stage, some customers, a bar (on which is a nut bowl
Floyd | (in which are lots of beer nuts)) and the bartender here.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger pauses to chat with a customer.
Floyd |
inky says, "ha ha, beer nuts"
inky says (to Floyd), "get beer nuts"
Floyd | You grab a handful of nuts from the bowl.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger's jewelry sparkles as she passes one of the stage lights.
Floyd |
Gerynar arrives, full of fun and funk.
inky says (to Floyd), "talk to bartender"
Floyd | "Hi friend. Name's Jack. What can I get you?"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask for a drink.
Floyd | [2] Ask about Bob Watterson.
Floyd | [3] Ask about Tony.
Floyd | [4] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | The band is playing some up-tempo dance number.
Floyd |
inky asks, "who's Tony?"
Alex says (to inky), "Awwwk! Word on the street is that Tony is [LINK]"
DavidW says, "The owner of the club. Tony Gabriele"
inky says, "aha"
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | You consider asking Jack for a drink but then you think better of it.
Floyd | The last time you drank on the job you nearly wound up taking out a
Floyd | reservation in the city morgue.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about Bob Watterson.
Floyd | [2] Ask about Tony.
Floyd | [3] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | Someone from the crowd bumps into you and apologizes before continuing
Floyd | on.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1" Gunther says (to alex), "wow"
Alex exclaims (at Gunther), "Awwwk! No parse found!"
Floyd | "I'm looking for a guy named Bob Watterson. Ever heard of him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. Sure. I know him. Real snooty society guy right?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's the one."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask when he saw him last.
Floyd | [2] Ask if he knows anything about him.
Floyd | [3] Ask about Tony.
Floyd | [4] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | One of the couples in the club starts to argue but it quickly passes.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "When did you see him last?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "He was here last night. He's here a lot actually. He bought a river of
Floyd | drinks for Ginger."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask if he knows anything about him.
Floyd | [2] Ask about Ginger.
Floyd | [3] Ask about Tony.
Floyd | [4] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | The band plays something from the Hit Parade.
Floyd |
inky says, "so Ginger was lying, unsurprisingly"
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "What do you know about him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I see him a lot. He hangs around with the society set. Irene Scarlett
Floyd | and her friends."
Floyd |
Floyd | "So I hear. Can you tell me any details? Do you know where he lives?
Floyd | What he does?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I think he has a penthouse apartment downtown somewhere. I don't think
Floyd | he does much of anything other than spend his old man's money."
Floyd |
Floyd | "You know who his 'old man' is?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Naw. I just assumed he had one."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. Don't we all? Thanks, Jack."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about Ginger.
Floyd | [2] Ask about Tony.
Floyd | [3] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a brief lull in the music and the dancers return to their
Floyd | seats before the music starts and more take their places.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "Ask about Ginger. Perhaps man-mountain has a nut allergy."
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "So what's the story with this Ginger dame?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Quite the looker isn't she?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. But can you tell me what she was doing with Bob last night?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Other than accepting the drinks he bought her?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, for instance, are they an item?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "What? Ginger and that guy? That'll be the day. Perhaps he thought so
Floyd | but I don't think she ever did."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about Tony.
Floyd | [2] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | Someone in the back of the club laughs loudly.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "So you been working here long?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "A few months."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Like it?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. It's alright. It pays well and I get to enjoy the floor show
Floyd | every night. I can't complain."
Floyd |
Floyd | "This place is owned by Tony Gabriele isn't it? I hear he's a nice guy
Floyd | to work for. That true?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sure. Mr. Gabriele is good people. I don't care what anybody says. He
Floyd | might be a little peculiar but he takes care of his own. But look,
Floyd | Mack, what's it to you?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Just curious. Who knows? I might want to work for him someday myself."
Floyd |
Floyd | "You thinking of taking up bar tending?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Naw. Don't worry, Jack. You're job's safe."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask what he means by peculiar.
Floyd | [2] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | The band is playing some up-tempo dance number.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "When you say Tony's peculiar, just what do you mean?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Hey. You're gettin' awful nosey. Ain'tcha?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I'm just naturally curious is all."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well Mr. Gabriele don't like people meddling in his private affairs.
Floyd | If you get any more nosey, I'm liable to get fired and you're liable to
Floyd | get worse."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Okay. I get the hint. No need to get sore. Let's talk about something
Floyd | else then."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Make with the small talk.
Floyd | [2] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | Someone at one of the far tables sings Happy Birthday.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Busy night tonight."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. Ginger really packs 'em in."
Floyd |
Floyd | You go on like that for another minute or two before running out of
Floyd | pleasantries.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Say goodbye.
Floyd |
Floyd | Someone in the back of the club laughs loudly.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Thanks, Jack."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Don't mention it."
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger pauses to chat with a customer.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "talk to ginger"
Floyd | Prying Ginger away from her adoring public you flash her what you hope
Floyd | is your most charming smile and say, "Hello there, beautiful. Got a
Floyd | minute?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger looks you over and says "Why not? Shoot, tough guy. What's on

Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger briefly dances with one of the customers before returning him to
Floyd | his previous partner.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "I could never be a detective in RL."
inky says, "hmm, no way to tell her she's lying"
inky says, "really? you seem like you'd be good at it"
inky says, "it's mostly detail work, not chatting up people, I think"
DavidW says, "hm. Maybe. I think both are important."
inky says, "ok, so I'm not sure what to do now"
inky says, "Ginger was lying to us but I don't see how to confront her"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x bowl"
Floyd | In the nut bowl are some beer nuts.
Floyd |
Floyd | All eyes are on Ginger as she passes between the tables.
Floyd |
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x nuts"
Floyd | (the beer nuts)
Floyd | Hard, round, and saltier than a sailor. These things are designed for
Floyd | one purpose only: to make you wish you had ordered a drink instead.
Floyd |
Floyd | A customer laughs at one of Ginger's jokes.
Floyd |
inky says, "I took a couple"
inky says, "hmm"
inky says, "I guess if we give them to the bouncer he might go off and get a drink"
DavidW says, "oh. yeah. That's at least tryable."
inky says (to Floyd), "w" DavidW says, "Save first, of course."
Floyd |
Floyd | Top Cat Club

Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "give nuts to guard"
Floyd | The guard doesn't seem interested.
Floyd |

Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "throw nuts at guard"
Floyd | You throw a handful of beer nuts at the guard and they scatter
Floyd | everywhere.
Floyd |
Floyd | The nuts get under the feet of the dancers and they begin falling like
Floyd | ten pins. The guard runs over to help them back to their feet.
Floyd |
Floyd | A customer laughs at one of Ginger's jokes.
Floyd |
inky says, "ha ha"
DavidW says, "haha"
inky says, "ok, I don't know why that would have worked"
inky says (to Floyd), "open door"
Floyd | You open the backstage door.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger flashes a brilliant smile at a portly man who is old enough to

Floyd | You can't go that way.
Floyd |

Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "enter backstage"
Floyd |
Floyd | Backstage
Floyd | You're in a narrow hallway that runs behind the stage. Along the north
Floyd | wall is the door to what must be Ginger's dressing room. The small star
Floyd | with the name "Ginger" written on it provides the tip-off. To the east
Floyd | is a door with the word "management" written on it. That door is
Floyd | cracked just enough that you might be able to get a peek inside. The
Floyd | door that leads back to the club is to the south.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see the dressing room door, the manager's office door, the
Floyd | backstage door and a switchbox here.
Floyd |
Floyd | [Your score has just gone up by one point.]
Floyd |
DavidW says, "close the door!"
inky says (to Floyd), "close door"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the dressing room door, the manager's office door or
Floyd | the backstage door?
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "backstage"
Floyd | You close the backstage door.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "We don't want the guard noticing the opened door."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x manager's door"
Floyd | Through the crack in the door you can just make out the shapes of three
Floyd | men. If you listen closely you might just catch bits and snatches of
Floyd | their conversation.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "listen to door"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the dressing room door, the manager's office door or
Floyd | the backstage door?
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "manager's"
Floyd | You hear the voices of three men. You can't make out everything they
Floyd | say but you are able to hear a few words here and there:
Floyd |
Floyd | "... due early tomorrow morning ... louse this up."
Floyd |
Floyd | You probably don't want to get caught back here. You should think about
Floyd | leaving soon.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "x switchbox"
Floyd | This looks like the master electrical switchbox for the club.
Floyd |
Floyd | The switchbox is currently switched on.
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger's next act is coming up soon. She'll probably be heading back to
Floyd | her dressing room to get ready. You really ought to think about going
Floyd | back to the club soon.
Floyd |
inky says, "hmm"
inky says, "presumably want to investigate her dressing room"
DavidW says, "yeah"
inky says (to Floyd), "open dressing room"
Floyd | You open the dressing room door.
Floyd |
Floyd | You really don't have much time. Get out before you're caught!
Floyd |
inky says, "I guess we're going to get caught, but oh well"
DavidW says, "darn"
inky says (to Floyd), "out"
Floyd | But you aren't in anything at the moment.
Floyd |
Floyd | Come on! Come on! She'll be back any minute! Wrap it up already bub!

Floyd | where three more thugs are waiting.
Floyd |
Floyd | "I caught this guy nosin' 'round backstage, boss. Whatdya want I should
Floyd | do wit 'im?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Thank you, Rocky. You may leave him with us and return to your post."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Duh. OK Boss."
Floyd |
Floyd | The boss pulls out a .38 and points it at your chest while one of the
Floyd | other thugs grabs your arms from behind.
Floyd |
Floyd | The one with the gun says, "Well look what we have here boys."
Floyd |
Floyd | The one holding your arms says, "Looks like a spy, boss."
Floyd |
Floyd | The thin one with a face like a weasel says, "And look what I found in
Floyd | his pocket, boss." He holds your gun.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Mickey Boy, I think you better take Mr. Nosey for a ride."
Floyd |
Floyd | Soon you find yourself shoved in the back of a black sedan. Some
Floyd | fifteen minutes later you find yourself on a dark pier being fitted for
Floyd | a new pair of cement overshoes. They're a little tight but it doesn't
Floyd | matter. You won't notice them for long.
Floyd |
Floyd | Just then your mother reaches over and shuts off the radio. "Honestly,
Floyd | Junior. I don't know why you bother filling your head with all those
Floyd | silly detective stories. Now get off to bed."

Floyd | scatter everywhere.
Floyd |
Floyd | Come on! Come on! She'll be back any minute! Wrap it up already bub!
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "turn off switch"
Floyd | With a big grin on your mug, you pull the switch and the lights go
Floyd | dark. Suddenly you hear shouting from the manager's office. "What the?
Floyd | Who turned off those lights!" Then you hear a door fly open, followed
Floyd | by the sound of little round objects flying all around the room and
Floyd | three heavy objects striking the floor and each other. "Get your fat
Floyd | backside off me, Mickey!"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sorry, boss."
Floyd |
Floyd | You had better scram quick before they regain their feet.

Floyd |
Floyd | Looks like Tony and his boys found the switchbox. The lights are back
Floyd | on.
Floyd |

DavidW says, "we might try to find Bob's penthouse apartment. We don't have an address, but..."
inky says, "well, ok, but since we're here"
inky says (to Floyd), "talk to ginger"
Floyd | Prying Ginger away from her adoring public you flash her what you hope
Floyd | is your most charming smile and say, "Hello there, beautiful. Got a
Floyd | minute?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Ginger looks you over and says "Why not? Shoot, tough guy. What's on

Floyd |

Floyd | night."
Floyd |
Floyd | Now you have her attention, "Really? And how would you know that?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Never mind how. I know. And now he's gone missing and I thought since
Floyd | you were the last one I know who might have seen him perhaps you could
Floyd | help me out. You want to tell me about it?"
Floyd |
Floyd | A brief flash of anger crosses her face for just a second before she
Floyd | smiles at you all innocent like and says, "Alright, Sam. Sure. Bob came
Floyd | backstage after the show last night and we had a few laughs. He invited
Floyd | me over to his place after closing time. I went to meet him but when I
Floyd | rang, nobody answered the bell. I assumed I'd been stood up and went

Floyd |
Floyd | "Him? Stand up a dish like you? Oh, honey, I don't think that's likely.

Floyd |
Floyd | "It's the penthouse at the Luxor building on the corner of 5th and

Floyd |
Floyd | "Thanks, sweetheart. You've been a help."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Any time, Sam. Let me know if there's ever anything else, anything at

Floyd | I was about to believe that a mug like Bob Watterson was going to
Floyd | deliberately miss a date with a dame like Ginger Andrews. Clearly
Floyd | something must have happened to him. Perhaps I could find some clues at

Floyd |
Floyd | I rode the elevator back down to the street, hailed a cab and soon

Floyd | Luxor Apartments Lobby
Floyd | The lobby of the Luxor Apartments is very posh but mostly empty,

inky says (to Floyd), "x key"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the brass key or the small key?
Floyd |
DavidW says, "You need the ID point, yes."
inky says (to Floyd), "brass"
Floyd | You see nothing special about the brass key.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "open wallet"
Floyd | You open the wallet, revealing an ID card.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "x id"
Floyd | Robert Watterson III. It's him all right.
Floyd |
Floyd | [Your score has just gone up by one point.]
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "drop tool"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "drop stool"
Floyd | Dropped.
Floyd |
Floyd | In the distance, you can hear the sound of sirens.
Floyd |
inky says, "hunh, sirens took a while to kick in"
inky says, "I wonder if we could have fled through the door in time"
DavidW says, "x'ing the ID is probably the trigger."
inky says (to Floyd), "stand on stool"
Floyd | You get onto the stool.
Floyd |
Floyd | The sirens seem to be getting louder.
Floyd |
inky says, "yeah, I guess you're right"
inky says (to Floyd), "climb wall"
Floyd | You can just barely reach.
Floyd |
Floyd | (getting off the stool)
Floyd | You climb up onto the top of the wall and look around. The view is
Floyd | fantastic from up here. It's marred only by the high tension wire that
Floyd | runs from the roof of Bob's apartment, passing over your head and
Floyd | descending to the roof of the building to the east. From up here on
Floyd | the wall, it's just low enough for you to reach.
Floyd |
Floyd | No, you're sure of it now. The cops seem to be surrounding the
Floyd | building! Well, Sam, it looks like you've been set up!
Floyd |
inky says, "ha ha"
inky says, "this is going to be awesome"
inky says (to Floyd), "climb wire"
Floyd | Try sliding down the wire instead.
Floyd |
Floyd | You'd better find a way out of here before they find you with Mr.
Floyd | Congeniality here.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "slide down wire"
Floyd | Sliding down that wire with your bare hands looks like it would be
Floyd | pretty painful. Perhaps you could try sliding down the wire with
Floyd | something.
Floyd |
Floyd | Hmm. The sirens have stopped. Perhaps they were going somewhere else.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "slide down wire with belt"

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | I looped Bob's belt over the high tension wire and slid down to the
Floyd | roof of the adjacent building.
Floyd |
Floyd | It was just in the nick of time too. I could hear the cops running
Floyd | through the apartment behind me. "He's not here, Sarge. But there's the
Floyd | body. I guess that tip-off was on the level!"
Floyd |
Floyd | One thing was certain. I didn't need to continue looking for Robert
Floyd | Watterson III. He wasn't missing any more. Although I supposed someone
Floyd | might be missing him.
Floyd |
Floyd | What had I gotten myself mixed up in? The cops showing up just then was
Floyd | entirely too convenient. Somebody wanted me out of the picture and they
Floyd | wanted it bad. But who? I tried to make it all add up but so far all it
Floyd | added up to was a lot of question marks.
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Folks, that's the end of Act I of tonight's drama: the Case of the
Floyd | Missing Playboy.
Floyd |
Floyd | In a minute, we'll continue with Act II but first...

Floyd | of five doctors recommend Muskrat Cigarettes. That's because Muskrat

Floyd | recent studies suggest that smoking just one pack of Muskrat Cigarettes
Floyd | a day can improve respiratory vitality and provide you with more pep!

Floyd | You'll be glad you did because remember:
Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | I slipped down the fire escape of the adjoining building and darted
Floyd | through the darkened streets.
Floyd |
Floyd | I had to learn what was going on. I'd been set up, that much was clear,
Floyd | and while I wasn't sure who was responsible, I had some pretty good
Floyd | ideas.
Floyd |
Floyd | I decided to head back to my office for some more information. I knew
Floyd | that it was risky, what with every cop in the city out looking for me,
Floyd | but I had to chance it. I figured I could get what I needed and then
Floyd | get out before they wised up. I should have a little time before
Floyd | Clancy's pals came looking for me.
Floyd |
Floyd | My first order of business? I had to make a few phone calls.

inky says, "it's true there's a dead guy, so maybe there's a ghost"
inky says, "oh, irene"
inky says (to Floyd), "call irene"

Floyd | John Olsen's a friend of yours. He works the society desk at the Times.
Floyd | It's very late but you're betting he's still there after putting to bed
Floyd | the morning edition. Turns out your hunch was right.
Floyd |
Floyd | "What's stewing, Sammy?"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about Irene.
Floyd | [2] Ask about Mr. Scarlet.
Floyd | [3] Ask about Bob Watterson.
Floyd | [4] Ask about the Top Cat Club.
Floyd | [5] Ask what he knows about Ginger.
Floyd | [6] Ask about recent police activity.
Floyd | [7] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [8] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "John, what can you tell me about Irene Scarlet?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Irene Scarlet! The most fashionable belle at the ball. She is the
Floyd | queen of the society set. She carries herself with the grace of a movie
Floyd | star and she mingles with all of the most fashionable men about town.
Floyd | She's been keeping me in print for some time now. Is there something
Floyd | about her that I should know?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Now, now, Johnny boy. Don't get over excited. I'm just asking."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, if you're running around with Miss Scarlet then you're in pretty
Floyd | rarified air. Her daddy's..."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah, yeah. Her daddy's a millionaire."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Right. And what's his is hers, if you know what I mean. I only wish
Floyd | that she'd give us more to print about her than just who she was seen
Floyd | with where and when. The girl's as squeaky clean as the girl next door.
Floyd | More's the pity."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well I hope I don't disappoint you when I say that's good news.
Floyd | Thanks, John. You've been swell."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about Mr. Scarlet.
Floyd | [2] Ask about Bob Watterson.
Floyd | [3] Ask about the Top Cat Club.

Floyd | [5] Ask about recent police activity.
Floyd | [6] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [7] Hang up.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "Mr. Scarlet would be Irene's father."
inky asks, "there's no relation between ginger and the scarlets, is there?"
DavidW says, "Irene and Ginger both have blue eyes."
DavidW says, "And both have been friends of Bob, I guess."
inky asks, "they couldn't be the same person, could they?"
DavidW says, "Irene's a redhead. Ginger is a blonde, somehow."
inky says, "suspicious"
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "What about Daddy Scarlet? What can you tell me about him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well I'm sure you already know that he's made millions in fish."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yes. But is there any dirt on the guy?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "No. He keeps pretty clean. The only thing fishy about him is his fish.
Floyd | His wife passed on several years back and he's devoted to his daughter.
Floyd | I hate to admit it but they actually seem to be a very nice family.
Floyd | Believe me, Sam. I haven't found even the hint of a scandal and it
Floyd | isn't for lack of trying."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Thanks again, John."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about Bob Watterson.

Floyd | "Hey, what about a guy named Bob Watterson. What do you know about
Floyd | him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Robert Watterson III. He's one of the society set. He spends money
Floyd | like it's his birthright, which it probably is. We see him a lot in the
Floyd | company of one Miss Irene Scarlet."
Floyd |
Floyd | "So they're an item are they?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Could be. You know you never can really be sure with these society
Floyd | types. They tend to flirt with everyone and when they get really close
Floyd | to someone they tend to like to hide it from people like me."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah, I can understand that."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Hey! Was that a crack?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "What else can you tell me about him?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Not much really. He doesn't seem to have a job or anything. Just
Floyd | money. He's been buzzing around the society crowd with the other drones
Floyd | for several years now but nobody's really sure where he came from."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well thanks, John."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sure thing."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about the Top Cat Club.

Floyd | "What do you know about the Top Cat Club?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "The Top Cat Club. Center for overpriced entertainment catering to the
Floyd | rich and privileged."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Quite the popular spot, I'm given to understand. But I already knew
Floyd | that. Tell me something I don't already know."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, rumor has it that the owner, one Mr. Tony Gabriele, has ties to
Floyd | organized crime. Nothing's been proven of course but it seems pretty
Floyd | likely. I'm told that the police have been watching the place pretty
Floyd | heavy these days."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Now that is interesting. Can you tell me anything about Mr. Gabriele?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Just that he's a very sharp dresser and he never goes anywhere without
Floyd | a couple of goons. I wouldn't get mixed up with him if I were you, Sam.
Floyd | People who do seem to wind up regretting it."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. Thanks for the tip, John."
Floyd |
Floyd | "My pleasure."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask what he knows about Ginger.
Floyd | [2] Ask about recent police activity.

Floyd | "John, what do you know of a dame named Ginger Andrews?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "The singer at the Top Cat Club?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's her."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Not much. She worked Atlantic City for a while before Tony brought her
Floyd | up here. Since she's been here, every sugar daddy in town's been trying
Floyd | to hook up with her."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Any succeed?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Not that I can tell. Unless you count Tony. Rumor has it that she's
Floyd | his girl."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Thank you, Johnny! Now that makes sense!"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask what he knows about Tony.
Floyd | [2] Ask about recent police activity.
Floyd | [3] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [4] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Johnny, I need you to tell me everything you know about Tony
Floyd | Gabriele."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Alright. Well you know he runs the Top Cat Club."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. Go on."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, he's also suspected of being connected with organized crime.
Floyd | Seems a lot of known mobsters like to visit the Top Cat Club whenever
Floyd | they're in town. The cops have been trying to connect him with
Floyd | operations in Chicago, Atlantic City, and a few other east coast towns.
Floyd | So far, they've been without luck, but they think it's only a matter of
Floyd | time before he slips up."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. That fits the picture, Johnny. What about legit business
Floyd | concerns?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well there's the club of course. And he also has a small warehouse on
Floyd | Pier 27 where he does some importing from the old country. He started
Floyd | the Top Cat Club with money he made through his import business."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Thanks, Johnny! That's just what I needed to know!"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Ask about recent police activity.
Floyd | [2] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [3] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says, "ah, warehouse"
DavidW says, "aha. Warehouse."
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Listen, John, I need your help. I imagine you've heard that there was
Floyd | a 'disturbance' downtown tonight."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. Not my desk but I heard something about it. Are you mixed up in
Floyd | this?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Never mind that for now. What have you heard?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Apparently some guy got bumped off and the cops got a tip-off about
Floyd | the killer. Seems they let him get away though because the radio's been
Floyd | all chatter about a manhunt going on."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Tell him Bob Watterson's dead.
Floyd | [2] Tell him the cops are after you.
Floyd | [3] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [4] Hang up.
Floyd |
Dave has had his fill of playing for now, and goes back to the Lounge.
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Listen, Johnny. I'll let you in on a scoop. That stiff that the cops
Floyd | found? It's Robert Watterson III."
Floyd |
Floyd | "You don't say? What'd he die of?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Acute back pain, complicated by severe pneumonia. They found him face
Floyd | down in his pool with a kitchen knife jammed into his backbone."
Floyd |
Floyd | "No wonder the cops are buzzing like a nest of angry hornets."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah. No wonder."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Tell him the cops are after you.
Floyd | [2] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [3] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says, "ha ha"
inky says, "ok, "acute back pain" is a good pulp detective line"
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Johnny, I got a little bit of a problem here. That guy the cops are
Floyd | after? You're talkin' to him."
Floyd |
Floyd | "What? You killed the guy?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "No. Of course not. But the cops think I did. Somebody fixed it so that
Floyd | they'd show up just as I was on the scene. Made it all nice and easy
Floyd | for them to jump to the wrong conclusions."
Floyd |
Floyd | "How can I help?"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Tell the cops I didn't do it.
Floyd | [2] Tell the cops I was with you.
Floyd |
inky says, "heh"
DavidW says, "hm"
inky says, "I can't imagine either of these options would help"
DavidW says, "yeah, I don't think either would help at all."
DavidW says, "Try 1. At least we're not asking him to lie."
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Call the cops and tell them I didn't do it. Tell them that if they'll
Floyd | give me 24 hours I'll finger the killer for them."
Floyd |
Floyd | "I don't know, Sam. They may not go for it."
Floyd |
Floyd | "I know. But perhaps it'll buy me some time."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Alright. I'll try."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Thanks, Johnny. You're swell."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [2] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says, "cool, that's not so bad"
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | You can't think of anything specific to say to John so you just chat
Floyd | for a while.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Chat with John for a while.
Floyd | [2] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | You put the receiver back on its cradle.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "get phone"
Floyd | Picking up the telephone you pause to consider your options.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Call Clancy at the 21st precinct.
Floyd | [2] Call the Times.
Floyd | [3] Call Irene.
Floyd | [4] Hang up.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "yeah. Johnny's cooler than I realized."
inky says, "hmm"
inky says, "I dunno if it makes sense to call clancy"
inky says, "I guess we should call irene first, at least"
inky says (to Floyd), "3"
Floyd | You're still not sure if you can trust Irene. After all, she got you
Floyd | mixed up in this and for all you know she could have been the one who
Floyd | set you up. Still, she seems on the level and you don't see as it
Floyd | matters much anyway. So you dial Irene's number. It rings a few times
Floyd | and eventually you're rewarded with the sound of her sleepy voice on
Floyd | the other end. "Hello?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Hiya, Red. It's Sam."
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Tell her Bob's Dead.
Floyd | [2] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says, "ha ha"
inky says, "charging right into the painful topic"
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Listen, doll, I've got some bad news. I found Bob Watterson."
Floyd |
Floyd | "But, Sam! That's wonderful!"
Floyd |
Floyd | "No. No it isn't. I'm afraid that he's dead."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Dead? Oh no, Sam! There must be some mistake!"
Floyd |
Floyd | "No mistake, sweetheart. I just got done not speaking with him. He was
Floyd | quite incommunicado."
Floyd |
Floyd | Irene starts crying and it's only with difficulty that she manages to
Floyd | say, "Oh, Sam! This is terrible! What happened?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I'm afraid that someone killed him."
Floyd |
Floyd | "He was murdered?" Still sobbing. "But who would do such a thing? Bob
Floyd | never hurt anybody!"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I was kind of hoping that you could tell me.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Listen, sweetheart. I can't go into this over the phone but we need to
Floyd | talk. We have to meet somewhere so we can sort this out. I don't think
Floyd | we have much time."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sure, Sam. Anything you say."
Floyd |
Floyd | "We have to be careful though. I've got half the city police force out
Floyd | looking for me, and whoever bumped off that friend of yours is probably
Floyd | after me as well. So we need to meet somewhere where we can be safe."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Where did you have in mind?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "We need somewhere where we can be sure that we're not overheard, but
Floyd | it's got to be somewhere public, somewhere where there'll be witnesses
Floyd | so someone will think twice before making a play for us. What's more,
Floyd | it's gotta be open at this late hour. Say! I've got it. The railway
Floyd | station! Meet me on the center platform in fifteen minutes."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sure, Sam, I'll be there."
Floyd |
Floyd | You put the receiver back on its cradle.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "so manly"
Fang has had his fill of playing for now, and goes back to the Lounge. inky says, "well, I guess that decides our next destination"
inky says, "I guess I'll call clancy anyway"
DavidW says, "oh. hm. We have 2 destinations now."
inky says (to Floyd), "get phone"
Floyd | Picking up the telephone you pause to consider your options.
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Call Clancy at the 21st precinct.
Floyd | [2] Call the Times.
Floyd | [3] Hang up.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | You decide to call Sgt. Clancy down at the 21st. You dial the number
Floyd | from memory and soon you're talking to Sgt. Clancy.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Clancy. It's Sam."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sam! Where are you? Half the cops in the city are lookin' for ya!"
Floyd |
Floyd | [1] Tell him I didn't do it.
Floyd | [2] Ask him to call off the manhunt.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | "Now listen, Clancy. You know I didn't kill that guy. Right?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh I don't know. Saints preserve us, Sam! We've got your fingerprints
Floyd | all over that apartment."
Floyd |
Floyd | "But surely you can't believe it!"
Floyd |
Floyd | "I must admit that I was rather shocked to hear you were implicated,
Floyd | Sam. You've always been a little lax with the law but you've never
Floyd | stepped over the line this far."
Floyd |
Floyd | "So call off your boys, Clancy. I was framed! Somebody set me up."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sure you was, Sam. Now why don't you just come down to the precinct
Floyd | and tell me all of the details."
Floyd |
Floyd | "No dice, Clancy. You know I can't do that. Just give me 24 hours and
Floyd | I'll get your killer for you."
Floyd |
Floyd | "You know I can't..."
Floyd |
Floyd | "I gotta go, Clancy, but I'll be in touch. But remember, just 24
Floyd | hours."
Floyd |
Floyd | You put the receiver back on its cradle.

Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "look in drawer"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the desk drawer, the top drawer of the filing
Floyd | cabinet or the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet?
Floyd |
DavidW says, "Not unless you think our folders might have new info."
inky says (to Floyd), "desk"
Floyd | In the desk drawer is a bottle of whiskey.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "get whiskey"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "drink it"
Floyd | You start to take another drink but then you reconsider. "Naw. That's
Floyd | enough, Sam." you say to yourself. "I have a feeling that you might
Floyd | need a clear head tonight."
Floyd |
DavidW says, "oh. The whiskey might be useful at that."
inky says, "this is the least drinkingest detective I have ever seen"
inky says (to Floyd), "look up ginger in folders"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the file folders marked A to M or the file folders
Floyd | marked N to Z?
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "m"
Floyd | You discover nothing of interest in the file folders marked A to M.
Floyd |
inky asks, "have we found *any* info in the folders?"
inky says (to Floyd), "x m"
Floyd | You see several file folders marked A to M in nearly alphabetical

Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "read m"

inky says (to Floyd), "read about tony in m"

Floyd | order.
Floyd |
Floyd | You thumb idly through a few of the folders before deciding that there
Floyd | really isn't anything helpful to your current situation.

Floyd | Your business concluded, you make for the door but upon opening it, you
Floyd | find yourself face to face with two rough looking thugs.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Well look who we have here, Mickey Boy!" says the one with the weasely
Floyd | face.
Floyd |
Floyd | "It looks like a rat, Flynn."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Pity he isn't caught in some trap somewhere. Isn't it?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Heh. Yeah."
Floyd |
Floyd | You step back into the room as the two thugs burst in. As you silently
Floyd | plan your next move, it occurs to you that you've heard these two
Floyd | voices before, through a door backstage of the Top Cat Club.
Floyd |
inky says, "hrm"
inky says (to Floyd), "talk to thugs"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "talk to mickey"
Floyd | I don't think you're going to be able to talk your way out of this one,
Floyd | Sam.
Floyd |
Floyd | Mickey Boy says, "You know? The boss doesn't like it when people nose
Floyd | around in his affairs." Then he drives the point home with a swift
Floyd | punch to your gut that leaves your gasping for wind.
inky says (to Floyd), "punch mickey"
Floyd | You hit Mickey Boy with your fist but he shrugs it off.
Floyd |
Floyd | Mickey Boy says, "When we're through with you, you'll wish you'd stayed
Floyd | in your office, gumshoe." He follows this with a lunge which you only
Floyd | barely avoid.
inky says (to Floyd), "hit mickey with whiskey"
Floyd | You smash Mickey Boy with the bottle of whiskey and lay him out flat.
Floyd |
Floyd | Weasel Face Flynn says, That's a pretty face you have there. It'd be a
Floyd | shame if anything were to happen to it." Then he takes a swing at your
Floyd | face and nearly breaks your jaw. You nearly stagger to the ground
Floyd | before regaining your feet.
DavidW says, "I think you might have to shoot one this lugs."
inky says, "ha ha"
inky says, "we don't have any bullets in our gun, I thought"
DavidW says, "er one of these lugs"
DavidW asks, "No buwwets left?"
Nate arrives, full of fun, but no funk.
inky says (to Floyd), "shoot gun at flynn"
Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to shoot the revolver.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "shoot flynn"
Floyd | That's really rather pointless since you don't have any bullets.
Floyd |
Floyd | Weasel Face Flynn punches you in the solar-plexus, knocking the wind
Floyd | out of you. "Had enough yet?" he asks.
inky says (to Floyd), "hit flynn with stool"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.

Floyd |
Floyd | Weasel Face Flynn says, "Don't know when to quit, do you?" Then he

Floyd | You pummel Weasel Face Flynn with the revolver and lay him out flat.

Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "search flynn"
Floyd | Weasel Face Flynn is aptly named. He's a thin guy with a face like...
Floyd | well, you know. When he's not stretched out on the floor, he nervously
Floyd | shifts from one leg to the other as his eyes rapidly dart to and fro,
Floyd | which only serves to enhance the mustelidae family resemblance.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "search mickey"
Floyd | Mickey Boy is the larger of Tony's errand boys. He's about six feet

Floyd | My encounter with Mickey Boy and Weasel Face Flynn made it pretty clear
Floyd | that Tony Gabriele was up to something. I still wasn't sure what it
Floyd | was but by now I was pretty sure that Irene had nothing to do with it.
Floyd |
Floyd | Once again, I ducked down the stairs and headed out into the dark,
Floyd | lonely streets. It was well past midnight now and the streets were
Floyd | mostly deserted. I didn't dare risk grabbing a cab; instead I walked
Floyd | the few blocks to the train station to keep my appointment with Irene.
Floyd | Along the way I had to duck into a couple of alleys to avoid the
Floyd | occasional copper. The last thing I needed was for some flatfoot beat
Floyd | cop to earn a promotion on my account tonight.
Floyd |
Floyd | It wasn't long before I found myself in front of the station. Now all I
Floyd | had to do was slip inside, get to the center platform and keep my
Floyd | rendezvous with Irene.

Floyd | Outside the Train Station
Floyd | The city train station is a big, imposing structure made by big men,
Floyd | designed to impress upon all the supremacy and majesty of the railroad.

Floyd | You are standing on the south side of the cavernous room that makes up

Floyd | would fill this room with activity but at this hour it is mostly empty.
Floyd | You can see the room stretching out in front of you to the north. Far
Floyd | to the north you can just make out the set of stairs that descend to
Floyd | the platforms. Behind you, to the south, is the doorway that leads back
Floyd | outside.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see one of the city's finest patrolling the room. As long as
Floyd | you stay here near the entrance, you can probably avoid his gaze but
Floyd | you'll need to find some way to cross the room without attracting his
Floyd | attention.
Floyd |
Floyd | The policeman is patrolling the north end of the waiting area for now

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Irene turned and left me standing alone on the platform. I waited a few
Floyd | minutes before sneaking out of the station by following one of the
Floyd | tracks.
Floyd |
Floyd | It didn't take me too long to walk the few blocks to Pier 27. It took
Floyd | even less time to find Tony's warehouse.
Floyd |
Floyd | I wasn't sure exactly what I would find but I was pretty certain that
Floyd | it wouldn't be canned herring.
Floyd |
Floyd | [This might be a good time to save your game.]
Floyd |
Floyd | Pier 27
Floyd | The pier is nearly pitch black at this early hour. In fact, the only
Floyd | light that you can see is coming from a high window in the warehouse in
Floyd | front of you. It looks like somebody must be home.
Floyd |
Floyd | Tony's warehouse is directly in front of you to the north. There is a
Floyd | dark alley to the northeast.
Floyd |
Floyd | A small sign beside the large metal warehouse door reads, "Gabriele
Floyd | Imports."
Floyd |
inky pushes the green 'space' button.

DavidW says, "I don't see how we can pass up a dark alley to the northeast."
inky says (to Floyd), "x warehouse"
Floyd | (Gabriele Imports)
Floyd | Tony's warehouse is a large, utilitarian building that hangs on the
Floyd | side of the pier, allowing goods to be transferred by truck on one side
Floyd | and boat on the other.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "ne"
Floyd |
Floyd | Dark Alley
Floyd | This narrow, dark alley runs beside the warehouse. Along the north side
Floyd | of the alley is a railing that overlooks the harbor. From the railing
Floyd | you can see a dock behind the warehouse.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see several dark figures on the dock unloading crates from a
Floyd | boat that sits almost directly below you. You quietly hide in the
Floyd | shadows while the figures finish unloading the crates and after a few
Floyd | minutes they move inside the warehouse.
Floyd |
Floyd | A ladder leads from a gap in the railing at the end of the alley down
Floyd | to the water. The bottom of the ladder is only a step away from the
Floyd | boat.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "x crates"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Nitku should've made peace with the absurdity of human existence before we started driving.
inky says (to Floyd), "x boat"
Floyd | The boat is almost directly below you. You could easily reach it by
Floyd | climbing down the ladder.
Floyd |
DavidW says, "hm. Is that ladder portable? I can't believe it would be, but we are the star of this drama."
inky says (to Floyd), "d"
Floyd |
Floyd | Boat
Floyd | You are in a small power boat which is tied up to the dock behind the
Floyd | warehouse. You can reach the dock by going west.
Floyd |
Floyd | A ladder leads from a gap in the railing at the end of the alley down
Floyd | to the water. The bottom of the ladder is only a step away from the
Floyd | boat.
Floyd |

Floyd | You open the toolbox, revealing a wrench, a hammer and a screwdriver.
Floyd |
inky says, "always handy"
DavidW asks, "We still have that brass key?"
inky says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying:
Floyd | a toolbox (open)
Floyd | a wrench
Floyd | a hammer
Floyd | a screwdriver
Floyd | a bottle of whiskey
Floyd | a brass key
Floyd | a wallet (open)
Floyd | an ID card
Floyd | expense money
Floyd | a revolver
Floyd | a small key
Floyd |
DavidW says, "oh good"
inky asks, "do you know what it opens? or just think it must be something?"
DavidW says, "I have no idea what it opens. I was hoping for a safe behind the painting, but the painting didn't move."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x ladder"
Floyd | The ladder descends several feet from the edge of the alley above down
Floyd | to the water below. The boat bumps up against it as it sways with the
Floyd | tide.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "get ladder"

Floyd | door.
Floyd |
inky says, "in we go"

Floyd |
Floyd | Warehouse Interior
Floyd | The large warehouse is filled with crates and boxes. There is a large
Floyd | metal door to the south that leads to the pier and a large door to the
Floyd | north that leads to the dock. There is also a smaller door to the west
Floyd | that appears to lead to a small office.
Floyd |
Floyd | Along one wall of the warehouse you can see a stack of crates that you
Floyd | recognize as the crates that were just recently being unloaded from the
Floyd | boat.
Floyd |
Floyd | From the next room you see a flickering shadow.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "x crates"
Floyd | You can't see inside, since the crates are closed.
Floyd |
Floyd | From the next room you hear muffled voices.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "open crates"
Floyd | The crates are nailed shut. You try to pry off the top with your bare
Floyd | hands but your grip isn't strong enough for that.
Floyd |
Floyd | From the next room you hear elevated voices arguing.
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "listen"
Floyd | You listen closely and you hear a voice coming from the next room say,
Floyd | "Did you get everything unloaded from the boat?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah, boss. We got it all."
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "listen"
Floyd | You listen closely and you hear, "What are we going to do about that
Floyd | detective, boss?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "If we find him, you're going to kill him, Mickey Boy."
Floyd |
inky says (to Floyd), "listen"
Floyd | You listen closely and you hear, "Good thing Ginger tipped you off to
Floyd | those two. Right, boss?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "And yet that detective is still making trouble, isn't he Weasel?
Floyd | Thanks to your incompetence."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Don't worry, boss. We'll get him."
Floyd |
Floyd | "You'd better."
Floyd |
inky says, "ha ha"
inky says, "well, I guess that confirms that"
inky says (to Floyd), "open crate with hammer"
Floyd | (first taking the hammer)
Floyd | You loosen a few nails with the hammer and manage to pry off one of the
Floyd | lids.
Floyd |
Floyd | Pulling off the lid you find some tightly wrapped packages containing a
Floyd | substance which appears to be narcotics.
Floyd |
Floyd | It looks like Tony has been using his warehouse as a front for a drug
Floyd | smuggling operation.
Floyd |
Floyd | From the next room you hear movement.
Floyd |
Floyd | You think to yourself that Irene should have gone to the cops by now.
Floyd | With luck they should be arriving any minute. You might as well just
Floyd | hang around and wait for them at this point.
Floyd |
Floyd | [Your score has just gone up by one point.]
Floyd |
inky says, "hmm"
inky says, "I guess the obvious twist would be for Irene to be in on it"
inky says, "you can't trust those redheads"
inky says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd | Don't go, Sam. It's probably best for you to just wait here until the
Floyd | cops arrive.
Floyd |
Floyd | From the next room you see a flickering shadow.
Floyd |
Floyd | Is that a car you hear or are you just imagining it?
Floyd |
DavidW says, "well, hm."
inky says, "wow, it really does want us to just wait here, hunh"
inky says (to Floyd), "open metal door"
Floyd | You walk boldly right up to the warehouse door and pull it open.
Floyd | Unfortunately, opening a large metal door makes an awful lot of noise,
Floyd | something which is particularly noticeable at this late hour. No sooner
Floyd | do you open the door when three men wearing dark suits and packing heat
Floyd | emerge from the nearby office. You immediately recognize two of them
Floyd | as your friends Mickey Boy and Weasel Face Flynn. You assume the third
Floyd | must be Mr. Gabriele himself.
Floyd |
Floyd | Tony points a .38 at you and says, "Mr. Fortune, I grow tired of this
Floyd | little game you've been playing. I would have thought that by now you
Floyd | would have learned not to go where you are not wanted."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Yeah, well, I've never been too good at that."
Floyd |
Floyd | "That's really too bad. Mickey Boy, Flynn, take Mr. Fortune for a ride
Floyd | in the boat. I've had enough of his meddling."
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sure, boss."
Floyd |
Floyd | Before you have time to react, Mickey Boy clubs the back of your head

Floyd | to realize that they were outnumbered. The jig was up.
Floyd |
Floyd | I stepped out of the shadows and said, "Officers, I'm glad to see you.
Floyd | I think you'll want to take a look at what's in those crates over
Floyd | there. I think you'll discover that Mr. Gabriele and his stooges here
Floyd | have just received a large supply of narcotics. The other night Bob
Floyd | Watterson overheard them discussing this shipment and he must have been
Floyd | foolish enough to mention it to Ginger Andrews. She told Tony and he
Floyd | decided that they needed to shut him up. When I started digging around,
Floyd | they saw an opportunity to get rid of him permanently and pin it on

Floyd |
Floyd | Suddenly a dark shape with flowing red hair ran into the warehouse and

Floyd | You're halfway across the waiting area. There is a small gift shop to
Floyd | the west and some ticket windows to the east. Far to the north, you can
Floyd | see the stairs to the platforms. An equal distance to the south, you
Floyd | can see the main entrance.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can see a policeman here.
Floyd |
Floyd | You turn up your collar and try to slip past the policeman but since
Floyd | you're nearly the only person in the station, he immediately moves
Floyd | toward you. You turn away but he chases after you and soon it becomes a
Floyd | foot race.
Floyd |
Floyd | Desperately, you dodge and weave but he blows his whistle and soon
Floyd | there are cops coming from all directions.
Floyd |
Floyd | There is a brief struggle as the cops surround you. By the time it's
Floyd | over, they've added assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest to
Floyd | your growing list of charges.
Floyd |
Floyd | The cops toss you in the back of a squad car and take you downtown.
Floyd |
Floyd | After a brief stay in the city slammer, you're brought up on murder
Floyd | charges.
Floyd |
Floyd | You try to convince Clancy to help you but the best that he can do is
Floyd | recommend a good lawyer.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Time for bed, Junior" your mother says as she turns off the radio.
Floyd |
Floyd | "But, ma! They just arrested Sam! Can't I please stay up a little
Floyd | longer and hear how get gets out of it?"
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sorry. You have school in the morning. You'll just have to ask your
Floyd | friends about it at school tomorrow."
