ClubFloyd Transcript:
Ad Verbum by Nick Montfort, followed by
Things by Jacqueline A. Lott and Sam Kabo Ashwell

As played on ifMUD on January 11, 2009

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Ad Verbum, written by Nick Montfort. Ad Verbum was originally released as part of the 2000 IF Competition, where it took fourth place. It went on to garner Xyzzy nominations for Best Individual Puzzle, Best Use of Medium, and Best Puzzles, ultimately taking the Xyzzy for Best Puzzles. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

After we were finished playing Ad Verbum, we did a quick playthrough of another wordplay game, Things, a speed IF written by Jacqueline A. Lott and Sam Kabo Ashwell. Things was part of Speed-IF >= 20, and was mostly notable for using as few nouns as possible. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki. To jump straight to the part of the transcipt for Things, click here.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Jacqueline hollers, "ClubFloyd will be playing Ad Verbum by our very own Nick Montfort in about five minutes. Type 'toyshop' to join us."
vimes arrives, ready to play with the toys.
Jacqueline arrives, ready to play with the toys.
olethros arrives, full of fun, but no funk. olethros says, "ah a classic"
D asks, "I've never played this, what type of game is it?"
olethros says, "a classic"
Otto says, "neither have I"
Jacqueline says (to olethros), "heehee"
Jacqueline says, "Well, it's a game that plays with words."
olethros says, "it is a game with a very nice gimmick, you'll see"
Otto says, "probably a game where foreigners like me won't understand anything..."
Jacqueline says (to Otto), "Possibly. I know I'd have a very difficult time with a game like this in French."
Qfwfq exclaims, "Hello!"
Taleslinger says, "I think I solved two rooms, at max."
Jacqueline says, "But some locations I think you'll do fine in."
D asks, "It must be harder to write and play IF games in French, though, right?"
Jacqueline says, "And probably learn some things about the language, so in that respect it'll be good... especially playing along side native speakers who can explain things. I'm sort of envious of Otto and Taleslinger today in that regard."
Otto says (to D), "hmm, possible, but it's rather ok generally"
Jacqueline says (to D), "Well, there are lots of French games, actually. It's been a little tricky porting the parsers to French, but it's been done."
Otto asks, ".. Taleslinger Where are your from?"
Jacqueline says, "Oh, and I missed it earlier, Qfwfq... hello!"
Jacqueline says (to Otto), "He's in Germany."
Qfwfq :-)
Jacqueline says, "Okay, so we'll begin here in a second. All game discussion should be on the #ClubFloyd channel, and only game commands said aloud in the room."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "load adverbum"

Floyd |
Floyd | Foyer
Floyd | This is the mansion's spacious ground-floor antechamber. The wallpaper
Floyd | is peeling and bits of plaster have fallen from the ceiling here and

Floyd | there. There is a stairway, stable enough to ascend. The big area to
Floyd | the west must have once been a separate room, but the demolition crew
Floyd | seems to have already taken out a wall. A living room is east. On the
Floyd | south side is the front door. A Dumpster has been dumped here.
Floyd |
Floyd | The contractor clears his throat and points at the big Dumpster.

Floyd | "Forget the fixtures, but pick up everything that's not bolted down,
Floyd | including the stuff out back. Then, drop off all the debris - er, I
Floyd | mean, um, treasures - right here ..." He scrawls something on the
Floyd | Dumpster with a marker. "Good luck!" The contractor hurries out the
Floyd | front door, which slams closed, leaving you alone.
Floyd |

Floyd | You spot a door to the north, leading out back. It is shut quite
Floyd | tight.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
olethros says (to Floyd), "open door"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the difficult difficult difficult door or the
Floyd | southern door?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
inky says (to Floyd), "x dumpster" Taleslinger says (to otto), "Sorry, I was afw."
Floyd | It's made of steel, and almost entirely open on one end for easy
Floyd | deposition of debris. Scrawled across it is the phrase "ATROPHY CASE."
Floyd | Perhaps the contractor left out a space when labelling it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Jacqueline says, "Man, I haven't played this in years. I think I'll be fine to play along, as I don't think I'll recall anything."
maga arrives, ready to play with the toys.
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | You're the adventurer, in this scenario.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying nothing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Taleslinger says, "Hey, I get atrophy case. hehe."
Jacqueline asks, "South?"
Alex says (to Jacqueline), "Awwwk! Word on the street is that the South is the greatest region in the whole world."
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "s"
Floyd | The southern door leads out of the house. It is immediately
Floyd | recognizable as one of those doors through which one can pass only
Floyd | upon completing the game.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
olethros says (to Floyd), "open south door"
Floyd | I only caught that first part. Try truncating that command or using a
Floyd | different object.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Jacqueline says, "heehee. Okay, not south."
olethros says (to Floyd), "open door"
Floyd | Which do you mean, the difficult difficult difficult door or the
Floyd | southern door?
Floyd |

Floyd | >
olethros says (to Floyd), "difficult difficult difficult"
Floyd | Your difficult labor pays off. You open the difficult difficult
Floyd | difficult door.
Floyd |

Floyd | [+2.]
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "x difficult difficult difficult door"
Floyd | This difficult difficult difficult door looks like the kind that is

Floyd | always getting stuck stuck stuck. It now stands open.

olethros says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |

Floyd | Wordplayground
Floyd | Here's a sort of small, enclosed backyard, closed in with a high
Floyd | wooden fence and completely covered with asphalt.
Floyd |
Floyd | A door to the s, leading inside, is open.
Floyd |

Floyd | A little boy stands here smugly. 'Georgie' is embroidered on his knit
Floyd | shirt.
Floyd |
Floyd | There's one of those robotic puppies - the latest fad - here.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your object-sensitive eyes also notice: ... toy dinosaur.

Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy lets out a derisive little puppy laugh.
Floyd |
olethros says, "I dont think I played through this"
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "take dinosaur"
Floyd | [ ... ]
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "x dinosaur"
Floyd | The toy dinosaur looks like a triceratops. It is made of
Floyd | injection-molded plastic, and colored the same pale, milky green all
Floyd | over.
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma was playing Zork on my computer, and
Floyd | she's so ugly, she broke the Mirror Room!"

Floyd |
Floyd | >
olethros says (to Floyd), "jump shark"
Floyd | I only caught that first part. Try truncating that command or using a
Floyd | different object.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x boy"
Floyd | The boy looks about the size for second grade, but his serious,
Floyd | bespectacled gaze suggests that he may be slightly older.

Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's face looks like an 'at' sign."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "boy, hello"
Floyd | Georgie waves at you tentatively.
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy lets out a derisive little puppy laugh.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

inky says (to Floyd), "take boy"
Floyd | You move in to hoist Georgie away from the prize, but he eludes your
Floyd | grasp. He manages to stay near the toy dinosaur, too.
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "You got an elvish momma of great antiquity."

Floyd |
Floyd | >
inky says (to Floyd), "take puppy"
Floyd | The robotic puppy is endowed with locomotive abilities that are as
Floyd | quick and random as its prepackaged wit. It scuttles away from you

Floyd | quickly.
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so stupid, she tried to give hypertext
Floyd | Ritalin."
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Nitku says (to Floyd), "quip at puppy"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognize.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
D says, "I don't understand any of this bizarre stuff"
Jacqueline asks, "Wow. How many 'your momma' jokes will there be?"
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "ask georgie about dinosaur"
Floyd | "Miiiiiiiiine!" Georgie screeches, whisking the toy dinosaur away and
Floyd | setting it down elsewhere on the asphalt. "You can't have that. Not

Floyd | unless you know more dinosaur names than me, and nobody knows more
Floyd | dinosaur names than me. So there!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so stupid, when you were born she
Floyd | thought the umbilical cord meant that you were a peripheral."
Floyd |

Floyd | >
D asks, "Is this backyard part of what we need to remove from the premises?"
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "triceratops"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognize.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
D asks, "Like do we take the kid?"
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "say triceratops"
Floyd | Whom do you want to say that to?
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "say triceratops to georgie"
Floyd | Georgie reddens. He clenches his fists, twists back and forth while
Floyd | straining forward on his toes, and emits a trumpeting whine. "I was
Floyd | gonna say that one next!" he says. His concentration seems unbroken,

Floyd | despite this outburst.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh yeah? Tyrannosaurus!" Georgie says, with pride.
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so ugly, the computer took one look at
Floyd | her and said 'Illegal operation.'"

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "I think any location we encounter we have to take everything (though I'm not sure about the kid; he may just be part of the puzzle)."
inky says, "I think you have to get rid of the kid, yeah"
inky says (to Floyd), "say stegasaurus to georgie"
Floyd | Georgie looks puzzled, as if he hasn't heard that dinosaur name
Floyd | before. He sputters for a moment, perhaps confused by the novel name,
Floyd | apparently finding it difficult to think.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh yeah? Psittacosaurus!" Georgie says, with pride.
Floyd |

Floyd | The puppy lets out a derisive little puppy laugh.

Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "say onatops to georgie" inky says, "cheater!"
Floyd | "Is that supposed to be a dinosaur name?" Georgie says. "Nuh-uh!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's extra-wide, and SCSI."
Floyd |
Floyd | >

inky says (to Floyd), "say pteradon to georgie"
Floyd | "Is that supposed to be a dinosaur name?" Georgie says. "Nuh-uh!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so stupid, she thinks she can make a
Floyd | floppy disk into a hard disk by pulling on it."

Floyd |
Floyd | >
inky says (to Floyd), "say brontosaurus to georgie"
Floyd | Georgie reddens. He clenches his fists, twists back and forth while
Floyd | straining forward on his toes, and emits a trumpeting whine. "I was

Floyd | despite this outburst.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh yeah? Theropod!" Georgie says, with pride.
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy lets out a derisive little puppy laugh.

Floyd |

inky says (to Floyd), "say apatasaurus to georgie"
Floyd | Georgie looks puzzled, as if he hasn't heard that dinosaur name

Floyd | before. He sputters for a moment, perhaps confused by the novel name,
Floyd | apparently finding it difficult to think.

Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh yeah? Supersaurus!" Georgie says, with pride.
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so fat she'd barely fit on five
Floyd | CD-ROMs."
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Jacqueline asks (of inky), "Are you pulling from a list or do you just know this many dinosaur names?"
inky asks (of Jacqueline), "what, don't you?"
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "say godzilla to georgie"
Floyd | "Is that supposed to be a dinosaur name?" Georgie says. "Nuh-uh!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so poor, she's got a C-64."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Otto says (to floyd), "say azerty to georgie"
Floyd | "Is that supposed to be a dinosaur name?" Georgie says. "Nuh-uh!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma goes down more often than Windows 98."
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Jacqueline says (to Taleslinger), "heehee"
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "say puppy to georgie"
Floyd | "Is that supposed to be a dinosaur name?" Georgie says. "Nuh-uh!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so stupid, when she got hungry she

Floyd | asked people to forward spam to her."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
inky says, "I think the "puzzled" response means it looks like a dinosaur name but he doesn't actually know it"
D says (to Floyd), "kick georgie" inky says, "since Taleslinger made a typo and it still got accepted"
Floyd | Georgie is deft at eluding playground bullies, and dodges your attack.
Floyd | "You don't know-ow dinosaur names," Georgie sings. "You're just a
Floyd | stupid me-e-nie!" He manages to remain quite near the toy dinosaur,
Floyd | though.
Nitku says (to Floyd), "say dino to georgie"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so stupid, she thought USENET was
Floyd | previously owned."
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Floyd | "Miiiiiiiiine!" Georgie screeches, whisking the toy dinosaur away and
Floyd | setting it down elsewhere on the asphalt. "You can't have that. Not
Floyd | unless you know more dinosaur names than me, and nobody knows more
Floyd | dinosaur names than me. So there!"
Floyd |

Floyd | The puppy lets out a derisive little puppy laugh.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Okay, the spam joke was pretty funny."
inky says (to Floyd), "say abcsaur to georgie"
Floyd | "Is that supposed to be a dinosaur name?" Georgie says. "Nuh-uh!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so stupid, when tech support told her
Floyd | to reboot she started putting her shoes back on."
Floyd |
Floyd | >

inky says (to Floyd), "say abcsaurus to georgie"
Floyd | Georgie looks puzzled, as if he hasn't heard that dinosaur name
Floyd | before. He sputters for a moment, perhaps confused by the novel name,
Floyd | apparently finding it difficult to think.
Floyd |

Floyd | "Oh yeah? Prosauropod!" Georgie says, with pride.

Otto says (to Floyd), "xyzzy"
Floyd | Georgie lets out a high-pitched laugh. "That one's already been
Floyd | sa-aid!" he sings, taunting you. "You don't know any mo-ore dinosaur
Floyd | names!"

Floyd |
Floyd | The puppy quips: "Your momma's so butch, she shops at Amazon."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Floyd | A distracted figure with a huge bushy beard blunders in just as you
Floyd | speak the word of ancient magic. The man wears loose clothing, and an

Floyd | expression of intense concentration. He is clutching his frizzy hair
Floyd | with one hand; his other hand grips an intricate grid - the object of
Floyd | his attention.
Floyd |
Floyd | His eyes brighten as the word you've spoken reaches his ears. "Yes!
Floyd | Yes! That's it!" he exclaims as he draws out a pen and fills in a row

Floyd | of squares. "Now my hyperconstrained, double-acrostic, cryptic
Floyd | crossword is complete, and ready to puzzle others. That was all I
Floyd | needed - just a simple five-letter word, composed only of the letters
Floyd | 'X' 'Y' and 'Z,' that would fit here!"
Floyd |
Floyd | He grips your hand and shakes it fervently. "Thank you! Now that I've

Floyd | finished with that, I can get on to those other things I've been
Floyd | meaning to do, such as monkey-wrenching the demolition and saving
Floyd | recreational linguistics for future generations." He turns away and
Floyd | mutters, just before he departs, "I hope none of that will involve
Floyd | lying in front of a bulldozer..."
Floyd |

Floyd | The puppy lets out a derisive little puppy laugh.

inky says (to Floyd), "say thing2saurus to georgie"
Floyd | Georgie looks puzzled - for a moment. "Hey, you just said something

Floyd |

Floyd | Georgie sniffs. His eyes become large, resembling the eyes of an
Floyd | affrighted waif-child in a Margaret Keene painting. A big shiny tear
Floyd | gleams beneath his glasses, dripping from his right eye. Then the
Floyd | boy's face reddens as a bead of snot begins to droop from his left
Floyd | nostril. "That's ... I don't ... that's all the dinosaur names I know.
Floyd | Uh, well ... Waaaaaaaaah!"

Floyd |
Floyd | He gives the toy dinosaur a little kick, tipping it over. "Well, it's
Floyd | just a stupid toy. You can have it, anyway. So what!" Georgie runs
Floyd | through the difficult difficult difficult door, then runs across the
Floyd | foyer and out the front door of the house, disappearing.

Floyd |
Floyd | A bearded figure wanders in, oblivious to you and, it seems, somewhat

Floyd | uncertain of where he is going. His loose clothing billows as he steps
Floyd | about.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Walk east..." he mutters. He stops short after a few steps. "Walk not
Floyd | east!" he exclaims, and starts going in the opposite direction. He
Floyd | stops again, wanders around a bit, and finally leaves. By the time

Floyd | you've recovered from the shock, you realize that he has completely

Floyd | Initial Lobby
Floyd | The lobby of the mansion's initial floor - the one above the ground
Floyd | floor - is an ordinary and fairly well-maintained room. There are some
Floyd | things scrawled on the ground here, in the contractor's handwriting:
Floyd | '1 object' is written to the north, while toward the other three exits
Floyd | on this floor '2' is scrawled. The stairway that runs down to the

Floyd | foyer turns and continues up, to the next floor. The constrained

Floyd | the WARNING three years ago in some other game session and you
Floyd | remember it perfectly, but how do I know that? I'm not supposed to let

Floyd | While interacting with Ad Verbum, it is possible to enter areas that
Floyd | seem impossible to leave by normal means. These areas are not actually
Floyd | impossible to leave, but departure can be very difficult. The
Floyd | challenge of Ad Verbum lies, in part, in figuring out how to exit from
Floyd | these areas. Because of the nature of interaction in these areas they
Floyd | do not, in general, allow one to employ the HINT, SAVE, RESTART,

Floyd | RESTORE or QUIT commands. A somewhat hollow voice will reveal a magic

Floyd | Mountainous Pretty Encompassing Thing
Floyd | All around you, mountainous unimplemented things rise up into the
Floyd | lofty heavenly unimplemented thing. Beneath your pedal things, the
Floyd | well-worn linear pedestrian unimplemented thing descends into the

Floyd | lower geographically interstitial unimplemented thing. Nestled among
Floyd | the rocky unimplemented things, a notably implemented rustic wooden
Floyd | structural sheltering thing awaits. It looks promisingly warm.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "unlock sheltering thing with unlocking thing"
Floyd | Your manual things are so cold from the mountainous atmospheric thing
Floyd | that on attempting to unlock the wooden structural thing, you fumble
Floyd | the locking / unlocking thing and it falls to the flat underfoot
Floyd | things.

Floyd |
Floyd | A triumphant trilling auditory thing breaks the pristine absence of
Floyd | other auditory things, and a hoary sciuromorphic thing appears! With
Floyd | shiny optical things of evil, it pounces upon your locking / unlocking
Floyd | thing and ingests it forthwith!
Floyd |

Floyd | Oh no! Socially inappropriate verbal thing! How ever will you, the
Floyd | bold adventurous protagonistic thing, retrieve your locking /
Floyd | unlocking thing?
Floyd |
Floyd | >
inky says, "man, sciuromorphic"
Jacqueline says, "Heh. Yeah. A marmot."
Jacqueline says, "I love marmots."
Taleslinger says, "hahahahaha, socially inappropriate verbal thing!"
D says, "Unfair, I was wearing the gloves"
inky says (to Floyd), "hit sciuromorphic thing with vegetable thing"
Floyd | Attacking the hoary sciuromorphic thing doesn't appear productive.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
inky says (to Floyd), "throw vegetable thing at sciuromorphic thing"
Floyd | You can't throw the short vegetable thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "take vegetable thing"
Floyd | You pluck a relatively small thing of the vegetable things. You now
Floyd | have a plucked herbal thing!
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says, "That's a good way to curse"
D says (to Floyd), "examine hoary"
Floyd | A furry, cute yet dastardly sciuromorphic thing, which has lately
Floyd | swallowed your prized thing by which locked things are rendered
Floyd | unlocked (and vice versa). It is notably hoary.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
D says (to Floyd), "give vegatable thing to hoary thing"
Floyd | I don't know the word "vegatable".
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Taleslinger asks, "What was the error message, or did it just print it in the room?"
D says (to Floyd), "give vegetable thing to hoary thing"
Floyd | You're not carrying the short vegetable thing.

Taleslinger says, "OOps, Ilaw"
D says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You have manual insulating things (being worn) and a plucked herbal
Floyd | thing.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "give herbal thing to hoary thing"
Floyd | You seize the hoary sciuromorphic thing and force the herbal things
Floyd | into its oral thing! You hold its struggling furry corporeal thing
Floyd | against your corporeal thing and stroke its tubular peristaltic thing

Floyd | until it swallows. As you release it, it viciously bites your manual
Floyd | thing! Ow!
Floyd |
Floyd | The hoary sciuromorphic thing trills nauseously.
Floyd |

D says (to Floyd), "take all"
Floyd | I don't see what you're referring to.

Floyd |
Floyd | The hoary sciuromorphic thing looks a little queasy.
Floyd |

Floyd | Time passes...
Floyd |
Floyd | Eww! The hoary sciuromorphic thing violently defecates! Your locking
Floyd | / unlocking thing is returned, albeit somewhat icky!

Floyd | >

Taleslinger says, "ha ha ha"
Taleslinger says, "ewww"
D says (to Floyd), "take unlocking thing"

Floyd | afterwards.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Bert says, "How did you guys produce 500 lines of scrollback during a fifteen minute phone call? (skim skim skim...)"
D says (to Floyd), "unlock shelter thing with unlocking thing"
Floyd | Once again you insert the locking / unlocking thing into the thing
Floyd | which was made to accept it, and carefully unlock it. The flat wooden
Floyd | thing sealing the thing by which you may enter swings aside, its
Floyd | articulated metal things creaking!
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Taleslinger looks up hoary.
inky says, "we went up and down a lot of stairs"
inky says (to Floyd), "in"
Floyd | An emotionally satisfying thing swells in your metaphysical personal
Floyd | thing as you stride through the thing for entering or exiting the

Floyd | rustic structural thing. You light and stoke the heating thing, crack
Floyd | open a glass thing containing alcholic things, kick off your pedal
Floyd | insulating things, collapse onto the horizontal soft thing and rest.
Floyd |
Floyd | After a relaxing slumbrous thing, you awake refreshed and warm, and
Floyd | continue merrily on your ambulatory thing through the mountainous

Floyd | things. Hooray, you win the interactive thing!
