ClubFloyd Transcript: The Awakening by Dennis Matheson

As played on ifMUD on June 29, 2008

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Awakening, written by Dennis Matheson. The Awakening was originally released in 1998. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting Baf's Guide.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Jacqueline arrives, full of neither funk nor fun. DavidW asks, "What genre is today's game, anyway?"
Jacqueline says, "Lovecraftian, methinks."
DavidW says, "ah. Not my fave, but still interesting, usually."
inky says, "from the title I predict it is in the same genre as Narcolepsy and The Sleeping Princess"
Jacqueline says, "For some reason I really like Lovecraftian games, yet have never ever read any Lovecraft. I am not sure why this is."
DavidW says, "Maybe the original Lovecraft makes you forget you read it."
inky says, "I didn't think you were that into fantasy"
inky says, "(books)"
Jacqueline says, "Fantasy, yes. SciFi, not so much."
Jacqueline says, "I am annoyed at how they are often lumped together as a single genre."
inky says, "well, technically this is horror anyway, I guess"
DavidW says, "Sometimes you get a genuine sf/f story."
DavidW says, "Lawrence Watt-Evans's Brown Magician trilogy involves three dimensions: the normal one we know, a magical one, and a spacefaring empire one."
DavidW says, "It's a pretty depressing read, though, the way the story and the worlds are presented. All the ugliness and dirt, and almost none of the glamour of their genres."
inky says, "aw"
Jacqueline says (to inky), "I like horror, when it's done well. I loved Anchorhead, for instance, and the recent The King of Shreds and Patches IntroComp game."
Jacqueline says, "There's a mood, an ambiance to those."
DavidW says, "I suppose the Brown Magician might qualify as horror, except it's a rather mundane sort of horror."
DavidW says, "I've never really read anything quite like it."
Jacqueline says, "Huh. Thank you for possibly clearing his name. Possibly."
Jacqueline says, "ILAC"

Floyd | You remember darkness. And the cold. Cold and darkness. And silence.

Floyd | something you never knew you possessed has been lost.
Floyd |
Floyd | Suddenly, oblivion is split by a blinding light and a crash of sound.
Floyd | You awaken to the roar of a storm and a deluge of rain and mud.

Floyd |
Floyd | In the Mud
Floyd | Rain and muddy water are pouring down on you, making it difficult to
Floyd | see or even breathe. Sodden earth and mud surrounds you on all sides
Floyd | except overhead, where flashes of lightning illuminate a storm tossed
Floyd | sky.

Floyd | The howling wind sends the clouds racing across the sky. The almost
Floyd | constant flashing of lightning illuminates the landscape in stark
Floyd | black and white contrast, while the barrage of thunder joins with the
Floyd | wind in a mad concaphony.

Nitku says (to Floyd), "x mud" DavidW says, "muddy"
Floyd | The sides of the hole are made of dark, rich earth, now soaked through
Floyd | by the torrential downpour. As you watch, more and more mud is washed

Floyd | away and into the hole with you.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Yeah, I think we're just standing in the mud... though we, um, just woke up. Guess we were sleeping upright."

Floyd | the hole behind you.
Floyd |
Floyd | Graveyard
Floyd | Dozens of stone markers stand here, oblivious to the wind and the

Floyd | rain. Huge, twisted oaks, their limbs tossed by the wind, draw an
Floyd | unmentionable sustenance from the moss-covered, moldy ground. An odor
Floyd | of decay, which even the storm cannot dissipate, hangs over
Floyd | everything. An iron barred fence surrounds the graveyard, an
Floyd | ivy-covered barrier separating it from the world of the living. The
Floyd | only exit is through the gate to the east.

Floyd |
Floyd | A church rises to the east, its boarded up windows giving the
Floyd | impression that it is covering its eyes from the sight of the

ParserGirl asks, "What's the floyd shortcut again?"
Gunther says, "f or wf"
Jacqueline says, "Just >F WHATEVER"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x church"
Floyd | The old church has seen better days. Formerly painted white, the

Floyd | boards are now faded, peeling and rotted. Most of the windows are
Floyd | boarded up, and those that aren't have long since been broken out. The
Floyd | shingles have fallen from the roof, which sags alarmingly. A
Floyd | broken-tipped steeple rises from one end of the building, and a faint
Floyd | miasma of decay seems to rise from the structure.

Floyd |
Floyd | "The Awakening" is a text adventure game. You interact with the game
Floyd | by typing phrases like EXAMINE CHAIR or OPEN DOOR and the game
Floyd | responds by describing the world around you and the results of your
Floyd | actions.
Floyd |

Floyd | There are certain commands which are common to all adventure games.
Floyd | You move around by giving the compass direction in which you want to
Floyd | go; for example NORTH or SOUTHEAST. All directions can be shortened to
Floyd | one or two letters; in this case N or SE. You can also go UP or DOWN
Floyd | (U or D). In some locations IN or OUT work. You can also ENTER or
Floyd | CLIMB things.

Floyd |
Floyd | When you first enter a location, the game will describe the location
Floyd | to you. After that, it will only tell you the name of the location.
Floyd | You can see the full description at any time by typing LOOK (or L).
Floyd | You can tell the game to always give the full description by entering
Floyd | VERBOSE.

Floyd |
Floyd | You interact with the environment in many ways. You GET items to pick
Floyd | them up and DROP items to put them down. You can also PUT items IN
Floyd | things or GET items FROM others. Fairly complex sentences are
Floyd | possible, for example GET THE RED BRICK AND THE BLUE BALL FROM THE
Floyd | METAL BOX THEN THROW THE BRICK AT THE WINDOW is a valid input.

Floyd |
Floyd | You may encounter people or other creatures while exploring the world
Floyd | of the game. You can ask these people questions by typing ASK person
Floyd | ABOUT topic and tell them things by saying TELL person ABOUT topic.
Floyd | You can also SHOW them things. You can ask them to do things with
Floyd | PERSON, COMMAND. For example, to ask Bob to pick up the book, type

Floyd | BOB, GET THE BOOK.
Floyd |
Floyd | To look at an item more closely, EXAMINE it. (EXAMINE can be
Floyd | abbreviated as X) To get a list of everything you are carrying type
Floyd | INVENTORY (or I). Some other useful commands you can try are PUSH,
Floyd | SEARCH, SHAKE, THROW, RUB, KICK, CLIMB or READ. A part of any text

Floyd | adventure is learning what words the game knows. "The Awakening" knows
Floyd | hundreds of words, so feel free to try anything.
Floyd |
Floyd | If you get really stuck, you can access a hint menu at any time by
Floyd | typing HINTS. If you would rather not be tempted, you can turn the
Floyd | hint feature off by entering HINTS OFF.

Floyd | "The Awakening" is my first piece of interactive fiction. It is based
Floyd | (very) loosely on several stories by H.P. Lovecraft, most notably "The
Floyd | Outsider", "The Terrible Old Man" and "The Two Black Bottles".
Floyd |
Floyd | I mainly wrote "The Awakening" as a learning exercise. I had started
Floyd | several other games, but they were all too big and I found myself

Floyd | becoming overwhelmed by the scope of the game along with learning the
Floyd | language. I was inspired to try a smaller game by the Textfire games
Floyd | which came out in April of 1998. "The Awakening" became much larger
Floyd | than any Textfire, but the inspiration was there.
Floyd |
Floyd | It took longer to finish the game than I expected. My main problem

Floyd | involved the rope that is encountered in the game. Originally, it was
Floyd | far more complex than what is now implemented. Even what is there now
Floyd | doesn't work quite as well as I would have liked.
Floyd |
Floyd | I hope you enjoy the game. Since it is my first game, feedback is
Floyd | especially welcome. At this time (July 1998) my most stable e-mail

The

Floyd |
Floyd | A curtain of purple cloth hangs in the archway.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can also see a heavy wooden table (on which is a blue bottle)

Floyd | here.
Floyd |
Floyd | You hear a loud crash and see a flash of light through the cracks in
Floyd | the boards covering the windows.

Floyd | The blue bottle is warm to your touch as you pick it up. The warmth
Floyd | seems to travel up your arm and into the center of your being. It is
Floyd | almost as if you have found a missing part of yourself.

Floyd | Steeple Chamber
Floyd | This small chamber is about halfway up the steeple of the church. Rain

Floyd | and wind from the storm outside blows in through an open window frame
Floyd | and water collects in puddles on the warped floor, mixing with the
Floyd | droppings of the birds, or perhaps bats, which can be heard fluttering
Floyd | around overhead. Looking up, you can see a maze of beams and supports
Floyd | that form the interior of the steeple. Rain pours in from an opening
Floyd | higher in the steeple and trickles out through a trap door in the

Floyd | floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | A gaping splintered opening lies to the north.
Floyd |
Floyd | The top of the broken section of railing is visible sticking up
Floyd | through the trap door in the floor.

Floyd |
Floyd | You can also see an oil lantern and an old man here.

Floyd | Vestibule
Floyd | This small room is the entryway for the church. The years of neglect
Floyd | are obvious; the floorboards are rotten and warped and what were
Floyd | probably once stained glass windows are shattered and boarded up. Dirt
Floyd | and debris covers the floor. A set of double doors leads south back to

Floyd | the outside while a large archway leads north into the sanctuary.
Floyd | Overhead, there is an open trap door in the ceiling at about twice
Floyd | your height.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
inky says (to Floyd), "open green"
Floyd | You peel the wax away from the mouth of the bottle and pull out the

Floyd | cork. The old man suddenly realizes what you are doing. With a
Floyd | scream of "Noooo!", he throws himself towards you. As he collapses at
Floyd | your feet, a glowing green mist rises from the bottle and hangs before
Floyd | him. "No!", he whispers.
Floyd |
Floyd | Then, the mist starts moving slowly downward as he doubles over and

Floyd | screams in agony. As the mist soaks into the ground, he looks up at
Floyd | you and screams, "I'll get my revenge" I'll see you in hell. I'LL
Floyd | SEE YOU IN HELL! Ia! Ia! Fthagn... Aaaaagh...!"
Floyd |
Floyd | His body collapses to the ground. As you watch the body blackens and
Floyd | decays until, within only a few moments, what is left appears to be a

Floyd | many-months old corpse.
Floyd |
Floyd | With a loud *CRAK*, lightning strikes the steeple of the church. With
Floyd | a roar, the wooden structure catches fire. Clutching the second
Floyd | bottle to you, you race outside. You watch for a moment as flames
Floyd | consume the church. With a crackling roar, the steeple collapses

Floyd | inward and a plume of flame shoots skyward.
Floyd |
Floyd | Clutching the bottle to you, you make your way down the hill.

Floyd | Church Porch
Floyd | This wide, covered porch spans the width of the church front. A white

Floyd | picket railing surrounds the porch on three sides, except to the south
Floyd | where a short flight of steps leads down to the sidewalk. Two large
Floyd | windows have been boarded up but the main doors stand slightly ajar.
Floyd |
Floyd | Babbling to himself, the old man wanders after you.

Floyd | Sanctuary
Floyd | Once the heart of the church this room is now cold, dark and empty.

Floyd | Debris is scattered among the sagging pews and only shards of broken
Floyd | glass remain of the stained glass windows. Most of the interior
Floyd | fixtures have been removed, but a large portrait of Christ stares down
Floyd | at you from above the archway to the south. The pulpit still stands to
