ClubFloyd Transcript: A Bear's Night Out by David Dyte

As played on ifMUD on May 25, 2008

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of A Bear's Night Out, written by David Dyte. A Bear's Night Out was originally released as part of the 1997 IF Comp, where it took fifth place. It also received Xyzzy Award nominations for Best Setting, Best Game, and Best Individual NPC; it went on to win the Xyzzy for Best Setting. Finally, it was also nominated for Mejor Aventura (Best Adventure) in the III Premios Hispanos a la Aventura in 2002.

You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting Baf's Guide.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Bert arrives, ready to play with the toys. Jacqueline says, "I am unfortunately doing some stuff for work, and am thus more or less not here."
Taleslinger asks, "Does Mr. Dyte know we're playing this?"
Jota has had his fill of playing for now, and goes back to the Lounge. Jacqueline says, "But I adore this game and look really forward to the transcript."

Jacqueline says (to DW), "They've visited me. We carried them all around Alaska taking photos of them. heh"
DavidW says, "cool"
Jacqueline says (to Taleslinger), "But I'll pass along the transcript to David for sure."
DavidW says, "Maybe that's how I saw them."
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x david"
Floyd | David is handsome, debonair, forgetful and fast asleep. He also wrote
Floyd | this description.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | Quite the most beautiful furry brown teddy bear.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "hug david"

Floyd | >

Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "dance"

Taleslinger asks, "Hahaha, why is this implemented?"
Nitku says (to Floyd), "tickle david"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
schep says, "see also the ifMUD verb waylay"
DavidW says, "I don't know the history of the WAYLAY command. It's an in-joke of some kind."
Floyd | You tumble down, but being a soft bear, that's ok.
Floyd |

Taleslinger tries to waylay something, but suddenly realizes that he doesn't know what "waylay" means. Taleslinger says, "hehe"
schep says, "(use f *, not wf * so that everyone can see your input)"

Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "enter bed"
Floyd | You struggle, but clamber up successfully.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "sleep"
Floyd | You settle down in the warm fabric and fall asleep. In time, morning
Floyd | comes. The day of your owner's big plan to take you along to the Teddy
Floyd | Bear Picnic! Unfortunately, the picnic requires some kind of reply
Floyd | card for entry, and David can't find it anywhere. Ah well, maybe next

[cfspoilers] DavidW says, "It's weird when I'm not actively playing the CF game. There's a lot more... flailing, for lack of a better term."
trikiw says (to Floyd), "open cupboard"

Nitku says (to Floyd), "get down"

Nitku says (to Floyd), "get off"

Floyd | Cupboard
Floyd | When you aren't lying on the bed, you usually stay in here, snug and
Floyd | safe with your friends atop the warm pile of clothes.
Floyd |
Floyd | The cupboard opens eastward to the bedroom.

Floyd |
Floyd | On the pile of clothes you can see your good friends Matt and Terry
Floyd | Moose.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your warm winter jacket is here, which may be just as well, it's a
Floyd | little chilly.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x matt"
Floyd | A beautiful plush toy moose, in a kneeling pose, and a loyal (if
Floyd | silent) friend.

schep asks, "Hm, does the real life bear have a name?"
DavidW says, "Probably, but I don't know it."
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "ride matt"

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Wow - having been disconnected, I'm now really glad DW's the one logging."
Jacqueline arrives, ready to play with the toys. schep asks (of Jacq), "do you know the bear's name?"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take jacket"
Floyd | Taken.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

DavidW says (to Floyd), "wear it"
Floyd | Just the thing for a cold night.
Floyd |
Floyd | [Your score has just gone up by two points.]
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Hm... I can't remember."
Nitku says (to Floyd), "talk to moose"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.

Floyd | South Hallway
Floyd | This is the southern end of a plain carpeted hallway, which continues
Floyd | to the north.

Floyd |
Floyd | To the east is the computer room and to the southeast the bedroom. A
Floyd | bathroom (in the English sense) lies to the southwest, and one in the
Floyd | American sense to the south.
Floyd |
Floyd | A yellow plastic ball, known as a favourite toy of the family cat, has

Floyd | been left here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x ball"
Floyd | A spherical yellow plastic cage, with a shiny bell inside.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "push ball"
Floyd | Nothing obvious happens.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "shake ball"

Nitku says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd |

Floyd | Computer Room
Floyd | The computer room is neat but not often used. One day a new computer
Floyd | will arrive here, and surely then your owner will regain his
Floyd | enthusiasm. For now he keeps mumbling about bank accounts and
Floyd | expensive machines and repair bills.
Floyd |

Floyd | To the west lies the south end of the hall.
Floyd |
Floyd | A tall glass table stands here, home to your owner's old hobby
Floyd | computer. Next to the computer you can make out a blue disk through
Floyd | the thick glass.
Floyd |

Floyd | You can also see an ergonomic chair here.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x disk"
Floyd | You will have to get closer to the blue disk to see in detail.

Floyd |

Nitku says (to Floyd), "climb on chair"

Nitku says (to Floyd), "x disk"

Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "climb on table"
Floyd | You can't quite reach high enough to clamber up.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Floyd | You can't quite reach high enough to clamber up.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "jump"
Floyd | Full marks for cute and furry, but none for achievement.

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "jump on table"
Floyd | You can't quite reach high enough to clamber up.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
[cfspoilers] Taleslinger says, "Oh, just remember the solution. (shuts up)"
Jacqueline waves and makes an isquiesque departure for home.
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x chair"
Floyd | A strange looking padded chair on casters, designed for people to
Floyd | kneel on. This is supposed to be comfortable for them.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "d"

Floyd | American sense to the south.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "sw"
Floyd |
Floyd | Bathroom
Floyd | The bathroom has recently been tiled in glaring white. A doorway to
Floyd | the northeast leads to the rest of the house.
Floyd |
Floyd | Along the west wall is a large tub, which your owner apparently enjoys

Floyd | swimming in.
Floyd |
Floyd | To the south is the bathroom sink, the next subject of renovation,
Floyd | with a new copper pipe installed, and a storage drawer below.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Jacqueline arrives, ready to play with the toys.
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x pipe"
Floyd | A brand new sink pipe, still waiting to be connected, it leads from
Floyd | the floor to nowhere as yet.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "get pipe"
Floyd | That's not something a small bear can readily carry.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Nitku says (to Floyd), "x sink"
Floyd | In actual fact, the one thing this unit presently lacks is a sink. But
Floyd | it does have a sparkling new pipe and a working drawer.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Nitku says (to Floyd), "x drawer"
Floyd | A nicely laminated white drawer, presently shut.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "open it"
Floyd | The drawer wobbles around, and seems quite loose as you pull it open,
Floyd | revealing a yoyo and a ukelele.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Nitku says (to Floyd), "get all from drawer"
Floyd | yoyo: Removed.
Floyd | ukelele: Removed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Nitku says (to Floyd), "play ukulele"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Nitku says (to Floyd), "play ukelele"
Floyd | You strum a few chords, unconvincingly. Which isn't surprising,
Floyd | considering your soft toy paws.
Floyd |
Floyd | >

schep says (to Floyd), "x yoyo"
Floyd | A `Moose' brand glow in the dark yoyo, missing its string.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "ooh. Lightsource."
Nitku says (to Floyd), "x bath"
Floyd | A large white tub, still with quite a bit of water from the last time
Floyd | your owner went swimming.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Taleslinger says, "and a quite creative one at that"
Nitku says (to Floyd), "climb in bath"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.

Nitku says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |
Floyd | North Hallway
Floyd | A small knot of doors leading every which way, this end of the hall
Floyd | can be a little confusing for small bears such as yourself.

Floyd |
Floyd | Let's try to make it easy: northwest to the living room, north to the
Floyd | study, east to the front entrance, and south to the rest of the hall.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "Perhaps you're looking for the Pooh-Pooh Room."
schep says, "groan"
DavidW says, "'Want some more chicken?' 'No, thanks,' said the teddy bear. 'I'm stuffed.'"
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd |

Floyd | Front Entrance
Floyd | The front entrance is unremarkable, but for the charming antique clock
Floyd | hanging on the south wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | A door to the east leads outside, and the hall lies to the west.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd | The door is locked. Besides, it's cold and dangerous outside at night.

Floyd | The local centre for entertainment and laziness, the living room is
Floyd | permanent home to a very comfortable sofa and a television set. Both
Floyd | of these are much in use, usually at the same time.

Taleslinger says (to Floyd), "hug holly" DavidW says, "I'm sure you can wake the cat somehow."
Floyd | Holly purrs contendedly, and sleeps a little sounder.
Floyd |

Floyd | [Your score has just gone up by one point.]

DavidW says, "awwww"
Nitku says (to Floyd), "throw ball at cat"

Floyd | away.

Nitku says (to Floyd), "x cat"
Floyd | Holly's eyes dart about, looking for a toy to chase.
Floyd |

Floyd | The yellow ball is out of reach.
Floyd |

Nitku says (to Floyd), "give yoyo to holly"
Floyd | Holly sniffs the yoyo suspiciously.
Floyd |

Floyd | >
[cfspoilers] Taleslinger says, "I remember that you need to lure the cat using the ball."
[cfspoilers] DavidW says, "That seem obvious. Where, though, is another question." Nitku asks, "Should we do something with the cat?"
DavidW says, "Not now, but later."
[cfspoilers] Taleslinger asks, "This is spoilers, shall I tell you?"
[cfspoilers] DavidW says, "No."
[cfspoilers] Taleslinger twiddles thumbs.
Nitku says (to Floyd), "d"

Floyd |
Floyd | >

DavidW says, "We're supposed to get ready for the Teddy Bear Picnic. Try to find out what needs to be done to do that."
Nitku says (to Floyd), "s"
Floyd |
Floyd | Kitchen
Floyd | The kitchen manages to remain untidy, despite the fact that your owner

Floyd | tends to prefer home delivered pizza to anything else.
Floyd |
Floyd | A door to the south leads outside, and one to the north leads to the
Floyd | living room.
Floyd |
Floyd | Along one wall stands a high bench, featuring a sink full of dirty

Floyd | dishes, next to which you can see a telephone and an answering
Floyd | machine, if you step back and crane your neck a little.
Floyd |
Floyd | An insulated wire cord emerges from a hole at the bottom of the bench,
Floyd | leading to a socket in the wall.
Floyd |

Floyd | A picnic basket has been left here, containing a baguette.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Taleslinger asks, "Is nitku the only one who hasn't played this?"
Jacqueline says, "Mmkay, gotta go. Have fun, bears."
DavidW says, "bye Jacqueline"
Taleslinger bearhugs jacq.
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Thanks for the transcript in advance. Will post both when I return. And, if you'd like to choose a game before I get back and make the post, David, that'd be great, too. I need to start paying you a ClubFloyd Vice Presidential salary or something... perhaps three quarters of what I get paid to do it, or something like that."
Jacqueline waves.
Jacqueline waves and makes an isquiesque departure for home.

Nitku says (to Floyd), "x baguette"
