ClubFloyd Transcript:
Alchemist's Gold by Garry Francis
As played on ifMUD on July 17, 2022

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Alchemist's Gold written by Garry Francis. Alchemist's Gold was released as part of the 2022 ParserComp. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Knight_Otu asks, "The plan was Alchemist's Gold, as I recall?"
Jacqueline says (to KO), "It is, yeah."
Jacqueline says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask alchemistsgold"

CF |
CF | Of all the forms of alchemy practised throughout the ages, the best
CF | known is the quest to turn base metals into gold. Of course, everyone
CF | knows this is impossible. Even so, there's a rumour that an alchemist
CF | in the forest has figured out how to do the impossible and has been
CF | building up quite a stash of the shiny yellow metal.
CF |
CF | After picking up a lead in the local tavern, you think you've worked
CF | out the location of the alchemist's house. It's time to pay him a
CF | visit and make a little, er, withdrawal.
CF |
CF | After trudging through the forest for a day, you stop to get your
CF | bearings and have a rest. You feel like you're getting close.
CF |
CF | [Warning: During this game, you will find a map that is drawn
CF | using ASCII letters and symbols. This may sound weird if you are using
CF | a screen reader. The map is on by default. You can turn it off using
CF | MAP OFF and the map will be replaced by a verbose description. You can
CF | turn it back on again using MAP ON.]

Jacqueline says (to KO), "I think if the map looks okay then we can roll with that, but if it comes up all garbled we switch? I think we have to pick and can't have both unless we do map on, map off, map on, map off (and now I am channeling Mr. Miyagi)."

Jacqueline says, "Wait - 'You can hear someone to the west. It must be the alchemist.' ?? Sure. Must be."
Jacqueline says, "This game, man."
Jacqueline says, "This certainly was a game."
MoyTravis says, "This is extremely a "I want to make a light puzzler" game."
Jacqueline says, "Sorry, Garry Francis, I know I am sounding critical."
Knight_Otu says, "Not quite what I was expecting."
Jacqueline says (to Travis), "Yeah"
DavidW says, "yeah, I was expecting something more alchemy."
Jacqueline says, "I mean, it was solidly coded, intuitive, we got through it quickly but not too quickly. So all of that was well done."
DavidW says, "yes"
MoyTravis says, "The operative word in the title was Gold, not Alchemist."
Knight_Otu says, "Feels a bit like an old game book, maybe."

MoyTravis says, "One could graph it, had they the inclination."
Jacqueline says, "I mean, yeah."
MoyTravis says, "I would not! But the information is present in the words."
Jacqueline says, "One wonders why there is even a maze if the solution is handed to you..."
Jacqueline asks, "I guess we could have gone through this without killing the squirrel?"
MoyTravis says, "Well there are people in the world who do mazes recreationally."
Jacqueline says (to Travis), "I suppose there are."
MoyTravis says, "That's a good question, actually."
Knight_Otu says, "Unfortunately, I think we can't even enter the maze without the map."
DavidW says, "The cart did look like a dead end at first, yes."
Jacqueline asks (of KO), "If that's the case, then... hrm. Why then?"
Jacqueline says, "(That is a rhetorical question.)"
Knight_Otu says, "That's good, because I have no answer."
Jacqueline laughs.
DavidW says, "belatedly, I remember that Frobozz Magic Support has a one-way chimney."
Jacqueline says, "So does Zork I"
