ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Lonely Troll by Amanda Walker
As played on ifMUD on May 8, 2022

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Lonely Troll written by Amanda Walker. The Lonely Troll was written for the 2022 Text Adventure Literacy Jam, in which it took second place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF | To play this game, you will type commands when the cursor (>) appears.
CF | The game uses a VERB NOUN parser to interact with the scenes and
CF | characters. This means that in any location, you can type something
CF | like GET HAT, and the game will know what you mean. Sometimes you only
CF | need the verb; for instance, you can type TALK in the presence of
CF | another character to talk to them. Make sure you TALK to every
CF | character!
CF |
CF | The game will tell you what directions you can go, and you can type S
CF | to go south, N for north, E for east, W for west.
CF |
CF | You can make your own map on paper (that's what I like to do), but you
CF | can also type MAP and see a map of all the locations and who is in
CF | each one. Typing EXITS will show you every direction you can go from
CF | your current location.
CF |
CF | You can type HINT for a hint.
CF |
CF | Type VERBS or V to see the list of verbs you need to use in the game.
CF |
CF | You can type ABOUT to see information about this game and its art.
CF |
CF | You can type HELP to come back to this information.

CF | You give the last apple on the tree a good polish and step back to

CF | seen another troll like you for ages. You haven't talked to anyone, or

CF |
CF | Widely thought to be extinct, trolls were strong, purple-haired people

CF | having babies and died out. They were great growers of apples,
CF | wonderful builders, and could travel very quickly.

CF | CYCLOPS:
CF |
CF | Cyclopes (the plural of cyclops) are gentle, misunderstood creatures
CF | often treated as vicious and stupid. Nothing could be farther from the
CF | truth. Cyclopes are gifted farmers, especially in growing root
CF | vegetables like carrots. They are very tall, always bald, and have one
CF | eye in the center of their foreheads. Unfortunately, their single eye
CF | is often weak.

CF |
CF | DRAGON:
CF |
CF | Dragons are sociable creatures who make excellent companions, provided
CF | they are raised correctly. A dragon egg must be put in a very hot fire
CF | to get it to hatch.
CF |
CF | Baby dragons must be fed a pearl and a heartblossom flower to grow
CF | properly. A baby dragon must also be touched by a fairy's wand in
CF | order to grow to adulthood.
CF |
CF | Once grown, if well cared for, a dragon is the best friend anyone
CF | could have.
CF |
CF | > DavidW says, "well, so we grow our own friend, I guess."

DavidW says, "At least it's not a sea monkey."

CF ] Desert
CF | >
CF | > FIND 3
CF |
CF | FAIRY:
CF |
CF | Fairies are foul-tempered creatures who often have temper tantrums.
CF | The only way to calm a fairy down is to sing to her.
CF |
CF | Fairy wands get their power from griffin feathers. They are powerfully
CF | magical, and the touch of one is needed for a baby dragon to grow up.
CF |

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "find 4"
CF ] Desert
CF | >
CF | > FIND 4
CF |
CF | GRIFFIN:
CF |
CF | Griffins are noble and intelligent animals who suffer when it's time
CF | for them to shed their feathers and grow new ones. When old feathers
CF | are ready to come out, they get puffy and golden at the tip and itch
CF | terribly. Eating ripe bubbleberries helps griffins lose their old
CF | feathers. Bubbleberries must be fertilized with unicorn poop.

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "find 5"
CF ] Desert
CF | >

CF |
CF | MERMAID:

CF | jewels. They don't tolerate intruders unless they are offered a gift
CF | of jewels, and are often protected by swarms of jellyfish.

CF |
CF | PHOENIX:
CF |
CF | Phoenixes are rather silly birds who frequently feel the urge to
CF | explode into flames in order to be reborn. The best source of fuel for
CF | a phoenix fire is a dragon egg. Phoenixes cry quite easily when they
CF | are trying to burn themselves, and their tears turn into opals.
CF |
CF | > MoyTravis says, "Man I know you said it'd be short but that's a pretty wide variety of monsters we're being introduced to."

CF | UNICORN:
CF |
CF | Unicorns are a vicious species who exist only to find territory and
CF | protect it. Once a unicorn is established somewhere, it's impossible
CF | to remove it or convince it that anyone else has a reason to be there.
CF | The only way to distract a unicorn is to feed it carrots, for which
CF | they have a great weakness.
CF |

CF | Do you want more information on how to make ASCII art? >
CF | > YES
CF |
CF |
CF |
CF | To make ASCII art, you need to find a fixed-width (or monospace) font
CF | in your text writing program. That means that every character you type
CF | will be the same width so your text document becomes a grid with every
CF | space being the same width. I use Word, and the font I used in all
CF | these pictures is Lucida Console. You can Google "fixed width fonts"
CF | for your program and find out which are fixed-width.
CF |
CF | The second step is to make your picture on graph paper, using keyboard
CF | characters you think will work for your image. You can find a picture
CF | you like, print it out, and put it under your graph paper so that you
CF | can trace the image before converting it into keyboard characters. One
CF | thing to note is that the character spaces in your writing program are
CF | usually taller than they are wide, so when doing your image on graph
CF | paper, it always helps to make it a little shorter and fatter than you
CF | want it to be in the end.
CF |
CF | Finally, copy your symbols from the graph paper into your writing
CF | program on your computer. It takes some practice, but it's a really
CF | fun way to make art.
