ClubFloyd Transcript:
Fairest by Amanda Walker
As played on ifMUD on April 24, 2022

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Fairest written by Amanda Walker. Fairest was released as part of the 2022 Spring Thing. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF | Once upon a time, there was a great King who had ruled well and long
CF | in a prosperous land of green fields and happy subjects. His first
CF | Queen, a gracious and well-beloved lady, bore him his oldest son,
CF | Prince Conrad, before she died. The King remarried and had two sons,
CF | Hans and Roland, with his new wife, a scheming and avaricious woman.
CF |
CF | Now the King is dying. Although generally the kingdom would be
CF | inherited by the oldest son, the malicious whispers of his wife and
CF | the complaining of his younger sons, coupled with the fact that his
CF | oldest son Conrad is a hapless young man, have led to discord over
CF | which of the sons will be the next King...

CF | You are in the great hall of the castle with your father the King,
CF | your two brothers, the King's Magician, and your stepmother. The King,
CF | aged, sick, and exhausted, is on his throne, facing the five of you.
CF | He says, "Wife, how can I choose one of my younger sons to be King?
CF | Conrad..." he nods at you "...is the eldest, and the kingdom should
CF | rightfully pass to him."
CF |
CF | The Queen replies, "But my lord, he's not fit to be King. He has gone
CF | on no quests, defeated no enemies, and is not as handsome as my sons."
CF |
CF | All of which is true.
CF |
CF | The King wearily passes a hand over his face and says, "How can I
CF | choose?" He turns to his Magician and asks, "Magician, have you any
CF | guidance? How may I pick a son to lead after me?"
CF |
CF | The Magician pulls three snow-white feathers from his pocket and says,
CF | "These feathers come from the enchanted swan brothers and will guide
CF | those who follow them. We shall set a task to the princes, and they
CF | shall follow these feathers wherever they blow, and complete the task.
CF | Whichever one completes it best will win the crown. What task shall
CF | you set them, Majesty?"
CF |
CF | The King ponders this for a moment and says, "They shall bring me a
CF | carpet. Whoever brings the finest carpet, most worthy of a King, will
CF | have the throne."
CF |
CF | And so it is settled. You all set off out of the Great Hall to the
CF | front steps of the castle, and the Magician brings a feather to your
CF | youngest brother's lips and bids him to blow it. Hans purses his lips
CF | and blows.....
CF |
CF | The feather heads east, dancing on the breeze, and Hans follows it

CF | black eyes. And then you reach into the text, through the screen. Your

CF | And as you pull the mirror from the game, it dissolves and travels
CF | into your fingers, up your arm, your shoulder, your neck, and into
CF | your mind.
CF |
CF | The mirror tilts and winks in your mind. And as it shifts and turns
CF | and sparkles there, you know something about it instinctively.
CF |
CF | This mirror is a magical gauge of female beauty, but its eye is
CF | subtle. With so many beauties to choose from, it pulses with the
CF | reflections of lovely faces. It is supposed to know and reflect the
CF | fairest woman in the land, but it is wiser than most people, and knows
CF | that beauty is more than fair features, and that the fairest of all
CF | may change from day to day, moment to moment, as the good and evil in
CF | women's hearts act upon the world around them.
CF |
CF | And so you know that it can help you see the women you encounter with

CF |
CF |
CF | Every character and event in this game is stolen (sometimes modified,
CF | sometimes directly imported) from one of Grimm's Fairy Tales, with the
CF | base fairy tale being The Three Feathers. These stories are a
CF | basic-- and disturbing-- part of our cultural mythos. The original
CF | versions are often incredibly bloody and violent, and very unsettling
CF | in their assumptions about gender roles and relationships. Very few
CF | characters in these stories have names, and when they do, they are
CF | usually descriptive names: "Goose-girl", "Little Red Riding Hood",
CF | "Snow White", etc. Even "Rapunzel" is not a real name, but is the name
CF | of the vegetable stolen by the girl's father from the Witch, who then
CF | takes the girl in retribution.
CF |
CF | These archetypal characters (heroic princes, evil stepmothers,
CF | virtuous girls, damsels in distress, wise old women, witches, etc)
CF | always have defined roles and prescribed choices. And in fairy tales,
CF | although names often have magic significance (like "Rumplestiltskin"),
CF | characters never ask for names, and are never allowed to deviate from
CF | their quests without serious consequences.
CF |
CF | In fairy tales, physical form is of the utmost importance. Bad people
CF | are ugly (with the exception of some witches!) and good people are
CF | beautiful. Any woman or girl at the heart of a fairy tale is always
CF | surpassingly beautiful, and is guaranteed to love the hero (major
CF | heteronormativity, which I tried to tackle a bit at the end!).
CF | Sometimes these girls are clever and find their own ways to marry
CF | kings and princes. Sometimes they are enchanted, asleep, imprisoned,
CF | or transformed, and must rely entirely on the noble hero to save them.
CF | But many, many Grimm tales end with these girls marrying royalty,
CF | whether they sought it or not.

CF | PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUELord Byron famously wrote:
CF | "All tragedies are finished by a death,
CF | All comedies are ended by a marriage."
CF |
CF | In fairy tales, you usually find both marriage and death at the end,
CF | and they all have elements of both comedy and tragedy. So I stuck to
CF | this in the game's storyline: all the endings have elements of
CF | marriage and death.
CF |
CF | There are thirteen endings in this game, and only two that are happy
CF | endings for Conrad. But there are happy endings for some of the other
CF | characters, to whom I tried to give some agency and power that they
CF | never would have been allowed in the original stories, while sticking
CF | to the Grimm theme of just desserts for bad actions... usually
CF | violence.
CF |
CF | Some of my favorite Grimm tales are so violent and disturbing that
CF | they didn't make it into the game (see The Juniper Tree for
CF | an example), but all the violence in the game is well in line with the
CF | violence in the original stories (The execution of the false bride in
CF | a nail-studded barrel, and the horse's head nailed to the arch, in
CF | "The Goose-Girl," are depicted accurately here. And the horse really
CF | is named Falada!). After all, this is a world in which witches eat
CF | lost children, husbands murder wives routinely, and bloody vengeance
CF | is righteous. The Grimm ending to The Three Feathers is so
CF | egregiously misogynistic and violent that I booted it... I simply
CF | could not see a way to make it work here.
CF |
CF | I recommend that you spend some time reading the original versions of
CF | the Tales; they are terrifying, illuminating, and wonderful.

Knight_Otu says, "My original plan for Finish Your Foe was that there were several more possible opponents than there ended up being, but with largely the same introduction, varied by who the opponent was. In the end, it was just the three."
Jacqueline says, "Well done, Amanda."
Knight_Otu says, "And yeah, this was a good game."
DavidW says, "yes. I liked that."
Jade says, "there wasn't any good ending"
DavidW says, "yes, the dwarves one and the no wife one."
Jade says, "that was my appointment to Amanda"
Jacqueline says, "And yes, I collect original volumes of Lang's Fairy Tales, which often have Grimm in them, and so I am used to all this weird violence that is so wildly out of place if you only read one story, but if you read them all it becomes almost formulaic."
Knight_Otu says, "Conrad exiling himself to live with the seven dwarves was nice."
Jade says, "she implemented those after"
Jacqueline says, "I liked the women ruling the world one. And the nixie one was just delightfully violent and funny."
Jacqueline says, "Conrad was terrible himself, so the endings where he got what he deserved weren't necessarily bad."
Knight_Otu says, "True."
DavidW says, "Little Red Riding Wolf ending was one of the more predicable endings."
Jacqueline says, "I think the best ending was the one where he married someone else's true love and the kingdom prospered under excellent leadership."
Jacqueline says, "Like, everyone except Conrad did well there, and Conrad didn't do too badly."
Knight_Otu says, "The Conrapunzel ending, yeah."
Jacqueline says, "Yeah."
Jade says, "there has all kind of readings"
Jacqueline says, "Well, I must needs depart to another interactive fiction-related thing, scheduled at half past. Really enjoyed this. Thank you."
