ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Game That Never Ends by Earth Traveler
As played on ifMUD on January 23, 2022

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Game That Never Ends written by Earth Traveler. The Game That Never Ends was released as part of the 2020 Spring Thing. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF |
CF | Hi! I'm Earth Traveler, and welcome to my first work of IF, The Game
CF | That Never Ends!
CF |
CF | This is a rather bizarre work of IF, starring the featureless amnesiac
CF | protagonist being run through an endless gauntlet of puzzle rooms. On
CF | second thought, that isn't really that bizarre, except for the fact
CF | that the series of rooms is truly endless, and the puzzles aren't
CF | particularly challenging - except for possibly that one with the
CF | lights.
CF |
CF | In spite of the title, this game does have an ending, but you might
CF | have to think outside the box to find it. If you feel stuck, type HINT
CF | to display one of a list of hints.
CF |
CF | Thank you for playing!
CF |
CF | If you have any questions about the game or any bugs you would like to
CF | report, feel free to email me at earthtraveler413@outlook.com.

CF | it, and set off on your trip, hand in hand with Matt. DavidW asks, "Now, is any of *this* real?"
Knight_Otu says, "No."

CF | Car
CF | You're in the backseat of Bryan's car, cuddling in the back with Matt.
CF | You love his smile, and you love smiling back. This is definitely
CF | going to be the best trip ever.
CF |
CF | Bryan is up front driving, with his girlfriend Selena riding shotgun.
CF |
CF | The view of the forest cruises by.
CF |
CF | >
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Look at window
CF |
CF | You look out the window, taking in the majesty of the mountains, the
CF | beauty of the trees, the mystery of the underbrush. You wonder if
CF | you'll get lucky and see a deer, maybe even a big buck.
CF |
CF | "Man, it's a good thing I brought along some allergy spray," you hear
CF | Matt mutter as he looks out the other window. You look back at him.
CF | "Why?" you ask.
CF |
CF | He points at the window. "Look at these windows, they're covered in
CF | pollen," he says. You look closely at the window, and you can see it
CF | does have a very fine layer of yellow dust. "That's the kind of thing
CF | I love about you," you say to him, almost laughing in delight at
CF | having found someone so sharp, so observant to spend your life with.
CF | Because that's something you have no doubt about, can't have any doubt
CF | about when you look in his eyes?
CF |
CF | "Hey, can you two wait til we pitch a tent before you start making
CF | out?" calls Bryan from the front seat. You and Matt laugh, and Selene
CF | looks back at you with a hint of a smile...

CF |
CF | Campsite, Day
CF | You and your friends spent the afternoon hiking up, and found this
CF | awesome spot with plenty of room for your tents and a fire and a great
CF | view of the mountains. It even overlooks the city, looking very far
CF | away.
CF |
CF | You set up your tents, got all your gear out, but by then the sun was
CF | getting low in the sky and you were all kind of tired, so you decided
CF | not to do any exploring.
CF |
CF | You did manage to light a fire though, and that's what you and Matt
CF | were sitting together, staring into as the stars came out.
CF |
CF | Matt stands up with a yawn. "I'm going to bed, honey," he says. "Don't
CF | know how long you wanna stay up."
CF |
CF | "I'll join you soon, baby," you reply, giving his hand a kiss before
CF | he turns in.
CF |
CF | You go back to staring at the fire, letting your mind unwind a little.
CF |
CF | >
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Enter tent
CF |
CF | After a few minutes, you get up and join Matt in the tent. You're both
CF | pretty tired, so there's no fooling around. After another few minutes
CF | you're both asleep.

CF |
CF | Campsite, Night
CF | You're jolted awake by a sudden roar, a roar that sounds like
CF | something out of a nightmare. But you're certain immediately that this
CF | nightmare is taking place in reality.
CF |
CF | You hear something - whatever made that roar, probably - begin
CF | trashing Bryan and Selene's tent, and you hear both of them scream.
CF |
CF | Matt is already getting up, and crawls out of the tent.
CF |
CF | You hear another scream. It sounds like it was Selene.
CF |
CF | >
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Exit tent
CF |
CF | With a feeling of dread weighing you down, you get up and leave the
CF | tent.
CF |
CF | And you wish you hadn't.
CF |
CF | You push the flap open just in time to see some kind of monster grab
CF | Selene from behind and smash her in the head several times. When it
CF | throws her to the ground, the shape of her head resembles a split
CF | watermelon.
CF |
CF | Bryan screamed at the creature as it grabbed Selene, then ran into the
CF | forest as it killed her, sobbing the entire way.
CF |
CF | Matt looks frozen in fear, an understandable reaction because it's the
CF | same one you're having right now.
CF |
CF | > MoyTravis says, "This game has weird pacing, and by weird I mean not to my liking."
DavidW says, "yikes"
Knight_Otu says, "Note to Jacq - Not a family friendly transcript."
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Look at monster
CF |
CF | You can't make its features out very well, but you can very clearly
CF | see that it's tall, taller than Matt, probably seven feet, and that
CF | it's big, with big muscles, and it's walking upright and it's got some
CF | VERY long and sharp-looking claws.
CF |
CF | It turns to face you and Matt and roars again, a horrible metallic
CF | roar.
CF |
CF | >
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >RUN
CF |
CF | You feel sluggish, slow to react, slowed by fear.
CF |
CF | The roar seems to snap Matt out of his fear, though. He reaches down
CF | and hauls you out of the tent to your feet as the monster runs toward
CF | you. He pushes you ahead of him into the woods as the two of you
CF | stumble to a start toward the cover of the forest but it's already far
CF | too late, the monster reaches Matt almost immediately. It knocks him
CF | down with one of its massive paws, then picks him back up, and slashes
CF | its giant claws across with throat. Blood sprays from the jugular like
CF | a fountain as the beast throws Matt back to the ground.
CF |
CF | "NOOO!" you yell with a sob. Tears of sadness, of anger, come to your
CF | eyes. You look at Matt's dying form, then leap at the monster, putting
CF | your hands around its throat. The monster seems surprised at first,
CF | but easily wrestles you off of him and contemptuously casts you to the
CF | ground. You guess this is the end.
CF |
CF | > DavidW asks, "All of our commands are on auto-pilot, yes?"
Roger says, "quite possibly"
Knight_Otu says, "Looks like it."
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Look at Matt
CF |
CF | Oh god, Matt. Staring forever at the sky with glassy eyes. You
CF | should've had a life together? snatched away by some monster that
CF | shouldn't even exist?
CF |
CF | The monster glowers down at you, and you wait for the fatal blow.
CF |
CF | Suddenly the monster seems to tear off one of its own paws, and in its
CF | place is a hand. Before you can even process this, that hand reaches
CF | down and you feel a sting, the sting of a needle sliding into your
CF | flesh. You try to stand, to flee, to something, but the strength ebbs
CF | from your body within seconds. But you don't go unconscious.
CF |
CF | So you get to see the monster tear off its other paw, take off its
CF | head, and finally shed its hairy torso and legs. In its place is a
CF | human, but you're quite sure he's no less of a monster than the one
CF | portrayed by his suit.
CF |
CF | He sticks the paws and head into a backpack that was under his suit,
CF | then rolls up the body and manages to stuff it in as well. He turns
CF | his attention to you, saying, "The lieutenant colonel wanted one of
CF | you alive, and it looks like you get to be the lucky one."
CF |
CF | Some luck, you think as he hoists you over his shoulder and carries
CF | you away, handling you like one might a dead body?
CF |
CF | (...)

CF ]
CF |
CF | Infirmary
CF | The monster dragged you to some kind of military base. The drug he
CF | gave you has worn off now, but you still can't really move, because
CF | you've been strapped into some kind of dentist's chair. The monster
CF | left as soon as you were strapped in, but that was somewhere between
CF | several minutes and several hours ago, and nobody else has come in
CF | here since.
CF |
CF | You can see a pushcart with a scalpel that might cut through the
CF | bindings from here.
CF |
CF | >
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Get scalpel
CF |
CF | Yeah, that's not going to be happening. You can't reach all the way
CF | over there.
CF |
CF | Just looking at the scalpel, at its sharp edge, reminds you of what
CF | happened to Matt, reminds you of the blood, of it playing out over and
CF | over and over and over and
CF |
CF | You open your eyes. You feel like focusing might be important.
CF |
CF | >
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Escape
CF |
CF | Sadly, it's not quite as easy as that.
CF |
CF | >
Knight_Otu pushes the green 'space' button.
CF | >Wait
CF |
CF | With nothing else to do, you wait.
CF |
CF | Time passes.
CF |
CF | At last you hear the door open. Two men come into view. The first is
CF | dressed like a doctor, replete with a surgical mask, although you
CF | wonder what kind of doctor would agree to be part of something like
CF | this.
CF |
CF | The second is a man who looks like he's in his forties or fifties,
CF | already most of the way to bald with gray hair. He wears a gray shirt,
CF | black slacks, and a black vest, and has a United States Air Force
CF | patch sewn onto the latter.
CF |
CF | He looks you over for a minute, then turns to the doctor and says, "Do
CF | it." The doctor reveals a needle, rolls up your sleeve, dabs your skin
CF | with an antiseptic cloth, and injects you. You slip into
CF | unconsciousness within thirty seconds, left only with the sting, the
CF | sting, the sting of the needle?
CF |

CF ]
CF | The soldiers haul you deeper into the facility, into some kind of cell
CF | block, dumping you into the cot of an empty cell with no more ceremony
CF | than a group of mobsters dumping a snitch into a shallow grave. You
CF | can't move yet, of course, having been injected with the same drug the
CF | monster gave you.
CF |
CF | Cell
CF | The room is practically barren, with a dim yellow bulb in the ceiling
CF | and four utterly undecorated walls. Apart from your bunk, it's empty.
CF |
CF | But now, you remember everything.
CF |
CF | ***You have uncovered the awful truth...***
CF |
CF | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, QUIT or UNDO the last
CF | command?
CF | > Roger says, "well hunh"
Knight_Otu says, "That was quick and gruesome."
DavidW says, "uh-huh"
MoyTravis says, "F us I guess."
Roger asks, "think there might be another ending?"
DavidW says, "I think that's all we can get."
Knight_Otu says, "I'd like another ending, but I suspect no."
Roger says, "I wonder if this was a hand-off collaboration"
DavidW says, "Doesn't explain the archons stuff, though."
Krumar asks, "Did the stairs go down too?"
Knight_Otu says, "I think they only went up."
DavidW says, "That game only took an hour. Any other short games we could play? Or we could just stop here."
Knight_Otu says, "From the scrollback, yes, just up to the landing."
Krumar says, "I'm pretty surprised the game that never ends only took less than an hour."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
DavidW says, "well, you could got through room after room endlessly."
DavidW says, "I phrased that poorly"
Krumar says, "I would be up for another short one but I don't know how to choose a short one."
DavidW says, "Looking at CFS, we have already played Once Upon a Winter Night. That's the ragman game."
Krumar says, "Inside the Facility jumps out at me."
DavidW says, "Most of the others are longer than an hour."
Krumar says, "OK."
Knight_Otu says, "Huh, I recalled it being just "the ragman etc", but yes, that is the first part of the name."
DavidW has disconnected.
DavidW has connected. DavidW says, "sorry, lost connection again"
Knight_Otu says, "I'm not sure what else is short."
