ClubFloyd Transcript:
Episode in the Life of an Artist by Peter Eastman
As played on ifMUD on April 15, 2018

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Episode in the Life of an Artist written by Peter Eastman. It won Best Individual PC in the 2003 XYZZY Awards and took 11th place in the 9th Annual Interactive Fiction Competition (2003). You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | Alexander Pope once said, "A little learning is a dangerous thing." I
Floyd | don't know what he meant by that. I've always thought learning was a
Floyd | good thing. Without it, you end up in some boring job that you hate.
Floyd | Maybe he was one of those Communists who wanted to give opium to the
Floyd | masses so they wouldn't notice they were bored and there was nothing
Floyd | to watch on TV. No, wait a minute... the Communists were against the
Floyd | Pope. Well, whatever.
Floyd |
Floyd | It's time to go to work.
Floyd |
Floyd | Bedroom, on the bed
Floyd | I'm lying in bed. It's warm and cosy here. In fact, this would be
Floyd | a really nice place to stay if there weren't an alarm clock going off
Floyd | across the room.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "Okay, no sleepmask. Maybe I did it wrong."
ivanr says, "*shrugs*"
ivanr says (to Floyd), "x alarm clock"
Floyd | Without this, I don't know how I'd ever get up in the morning. It's
Floyd | currently buzzing loudly.
Floyd |
Floyd | The alarm clock is buzzing loudly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "Shouldn't be a dealbreaker unless there is critical information in thestatus bar."
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Well I think I look pretty
Floyd | good.
Floyd |
Floyd | The alarm clock is buzzing loudly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | I am empty-handed.
Floyd |
Floyd | The alarm clock is buzzing loudly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
ivanr says, "(I just pulled it up in a regular interpreter, and all that's in the status bar is the location and turn count, so I think we're okay)"
Knight_Otu says, "Sounds good."
ivanr says (to Floyd), "turn off alarm clock"
Floyd | I can't reach that from the bed.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
ivanr says (to Floyd), "get up"
Floyd | Okay, I'm no longer on the bed.
Floyd |
Floyd | The alarm clock is buzzing loudly.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
ivanr says (to Floyd), "turn off alarm clock"
Floyd | I turn off the alarm clock, and the buzzing stops. "The rest is
Floyd | silence." Shakespeare.

Floyd | Bedroom
Floyd | This is my bedroom - a great place to come back to at the end of
Floyd | the day. A doorway leads west into the hallway. The dresser stands
Floyd | against one wall, and the bed on the opposite side. There's also a
Floyd | closet, an alarm clock on top of the dresser, a large pile of dirty
Floyd | clothes on the floor (hey, it's still a couple of weeks till my
Floyd | laundry day!), and a life-sized cutout of Leonard Nimoy. What can I
Floyd | say? It's home!
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x nimoy"
Floyd | Mr. Spock was my hero when I was growing up. He had it all: strong,
Floyd | smart, always knew exactly what was going on. A lot like me.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says, "Well, we sure have a self-image."
ivanr says, "I have the sneaking suspicion that we (the PC) are being made fun of"
Knight_Otu says, "Possible."
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x clothes"
Floyd | There is a large pile of dirty clothes on the floor. Well, maybe
Floyd | 'pile' isn't exactly the right word. They're sort of strewn all over
Floyd | the floor. Seems to me like a good place for them.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x dresser"
Floyd | It's an old but sturdy dresser. I've had it since I was a child.

Floyd | wear.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Karona laughs.
ivanr says (to Floyd), "get all"
Floyd | clean clothes: I look through the drawers of the dresser, and pull
Floyd | out some clean clothing to wear: socks, underwear, and a pair of
Floyd | pants.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Plover arrives, ready to play with the toys.
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "wear socks and underwear and pants"

Plover asks, "I should have asked, but who?s the driver?"
ivanr asks, "what are we searching for?"
Knight_Otu says, "I think the room description is wrong about the hallway being to the west - we came in from the east."
Knight_Otu says, "We have no designated driver right now."
Plover says, "A bit Hitchhiker's Guide, when the game says the exit on the Heart of was aft, but it was port."

Floyd | stops me and shakes his head.
Floyd |
Floyd | The chicken watches me as I leave the bus. All the way off, I can

Floyd |
Floyd | Only when I'm standing on the sidewalk and the bus is pulling away do
Floyd | I look down to see what he has given me. It's a tiny flashlight,
Floyd | meant to go on a keychain. What on earth...? I look back to the bus,
Floyd | but it's already halfway down the block, and I can't see anything
Floyd | through the windows. All I can think of is a quote by Samuel Beckett:
Floyd | "He brings light, as only the great dare to bring light, to the

Floyd |
Floyd | I head on into the factory. It's just a few minutes till starting

Floyd | and heading to their stations. I still feel a bit weirded out by that
Floyd | guy on the bus, and the chicken on his head, and him giving me this

Floyd | step out onto the factory floor. Everything's normal here, just like

Floyd |
Floyd | Clop! A red wodget appears out of the chute.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "put widget in wodget"
Floyd | Ralph Waldo Emerson said that a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin
Floyd | of little minds, and he knew what he was talking about. He knew that
Floyd | sometimes the widgets would be green, and sometimes they'd be blue.
Floyd | So I've been doing this job for eight years, and every widget I've
Floyd | ever seen has been green. That doesn't mean the next one won't be
Floyd | blue. You've got to just take what comes and go on with your job.
Floyd | Emerson understood that, and that's why he was such a great genius.

Floyd | and... wait a minute! It won't go in! Hey - this wodget has a round
Floyd | hole! What's going on here? What the...! OK, wait... just a
Floyd | second... don't panic. Take a deep breath. It's going to be OK.
Floyd | Everything's going to be OK.
Floyd |
Floyd | Fine, so things change. The world is like that. Widgets used to be
Floyd | green and now they're grue. I mean blue. And wodgets used to have
Floyd | square holes and now they have round ones. That's OK. Round is a
Floyd | fine shape for a hole. I just have to put the peg into it anyway.
Floyd |
Floyd | But it won't fit! No! I can't deal with this! Someone must have
Floyd | made a mistake! They can't expect me to put these together. I just
Floyd | can't do it. No one can do it! I've got to find someone and tell
Floyd | them they've made a mistake. Then the holes will go back to being
Floyd | square, and everything will be OK again.
Floyd |
Floyd | That's odd... something seems to be happening further down the
Floyd | assembly line. I can't tell what's going on, but there's a lot of
Floyd | shouting, and I can see people running. Suddenly there's a clank, and
Floyd | the conveyor belt comes to a stop!
Floyd |
Floyd | >
ivanr says, "I remember that emerson reference from paul o'brian's review of this game. I am charmed by our PC"
ivanr says, "wait, uh oh"
ivanr asks, "should we go west?"
Knight_Otu says, "Probably."
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd | Perhaps you're wondering how I know the conveyor belt runs east to
Floyd | west. Well, I checked. "If you don't know where you're going, you
Floyd | probably won't get there." I don't know who said that. I saw it on a
Floyd | poster once. That very same day, I went out and got this
Floyd | super-durable, patent-pending outdoorsman's wrist-watch with built in
Floyd | compass, and since then I've always known exactly which way I was
Floyd | going.
Floyd |
Floyd | As I walk along the conveyor belt, I can see the room emptying out
Floyd | fast. By the time I reach the far end, most of the workers are gone,
Floyd | and those who are left seem to be heading for the door. Mr. Biggs,
Floyd | the president of the factory, is standing next to the doorway and
Floyd | shouting at them. He almost looks like he's going to step in their
Floyd | way and try to block the exit, but he knows he'd get trampled if he
Floyd | tried.
Floyd |
Floyd | Factory Main Floor
Floyd | This is the west end of the main floor of the factory. The
Floyd | conveyor belt passes down the length of the room and disappears into
Floyd | the wall to the west. A large set of double doors leads north to the
Floyd | lobby.

Floyd | >
ivanr says, "I saw we examine mr biggs"
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x biggs"
Floyd | For some reason, Mr. Biggs always makes me think of a bulldog. He
Floyd | can't be much more than five feet tall, and you always feel like he's
Floyd | about to attack you. No one messes with Mr. Biggs. I mean no one.
Floyd |
Floyd | Mr. Biggs glances up at me. "Get back to work!" he shouts.
Floyd | "There's absolutely nothing to be alarmed about! The company has some
Floyd | new owners, and they're just making a few changes. That's all there
Floyd | is..." He breaks off and lunges at the door in a desperate attempt to
Floyd | keep the last of the workers from getting away. He stumbles over his
Floyd | own feet, barely avoids falling, and collides with the wall. "Come
Floyd | BACK here!" he shouts, dashing out the door after them. It swings
Floyd | shut behind him, and the room becomes almost silent.

Floyd | This is the lobby of the factory building. There's a potted plant

Floyd | and south to the main floor of the factory. There are hallways to
Floyd | east and west.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x plant"
Floyd | I guess a plant that's made of plastic is a lot easier to take care of
Floyd | than a regular one. You never have to water it, just dust it once in
Floyd | a while, and it doesn't get sick or turn brown or anything like that,
Floyd | though if someone fell on it and broke it or something it wouldn't
Floyd | grow back the way a regular plant would. But then I guess you could
Floyd | just buy a new one. I wonder what company makes these things. If I
Floyd | ever leave this place, I ought to go and work for them. It sounds
Floyd | like a great business to be in!

ivanr says, "yeah"
Knight_Otu asks, "east was mentioned first of those two, so that?"
ivanr exclaims, "sure!"
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd | I know Mr. Biggs said there was nothing to worry about, but I'm not
Floyd | sure I believe him. I never trust anything the first time someone
Floyd | says it. I learned that from a guy called Lewis Carroll. He said,
Floyd | "What I tell you three times is true." What he meant is that everyone
Floyd | says a lot of stuff. Some of it's true and some of it isn't. If you
Floyd | want to really know, you've got to ask them again to make sure they
Floyd | mean what they say. Otherwise, they might just be saying it and not
Floyd | really mean it.

Floyd | Actually, I don't know why they call it that. It hasn't got anything

Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "listen at door"
Floyd | There's another long pause, and then I hear Mr. Biggs say, "It will
Floyd | be done right away. Exactly as you describe." There's a click as he
Floyd | hangs up the phone, and I hear him getting up from the desk. I
Floyd | quickly move away from the door, since I don't want to get caught
Floyd | listening to him. A moment later, the door opens and he comes out.
Floyd | I'm afraid he'll ask me what I'm doing hanging out in the hallway, but
Floyd | he doesn't even seem to see me. His face is practically white, and as
Floyd | he pulls the door closed behind him, it almost looks like his hand is
Floyd | shaking. He heads east along the hallway, and disappears down the

ivanr says, "okay, so we can check out the cafeteria or the restroom"
Knight_Otu asks, "Restroom or cafeteria?"
Knight_Otu says, "Timing."

Knight_Otu says, "sure."

Floyd | the factory being sold. It says there's some group of foreign
Floyd | investors who are buying it, but they don't want anyone to know who
Floyd | they are. Something about a holding company, whatever that is. And a
Floyd | lot of people are wondering what they plan to do with it...
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "read it"
Floyd | I flip through the rest of the newspaper, but the article about the
Floyd | Frobworks plant is the only one that looks really interesting. Except
Floyd | for an article about how to raise orchids, and it says that if you
Floyd | know what you're doing, you can earn hundreds of dollars just by
Floyd | having a bunch of plants sitting around your house. Maybe I should
Floyd | try that out. And there's an article here about how clear plastic
Floyd | bathing suits are going to be the big new fashion this summer, and
Floyd | everyone on the beach out in California will be wearing them. That

Floyd | the middle of the room. There aren't even any chairs, except the one
Floyd | Mr. Biggs sits in, so you have to stand up the whole time you're

Floyd | property of Grue Industries, Inc. If you are not authorized to
Floyd | possess this card, you are currently in violation of the law. Please
Floyd | contact the police immediately so you can be arrested and duly
Floyd | prosecuted." There's a black strip on the other side, just like the
Floyd | one on the back of a credit card. Other than that, it's completely
Floyd | blank.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
ivanr says, "this will make up for that bacon we missed"
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "eat apple"
Floyd | You know how in Snow White the witch gives Snow White a poisoned

Floyd | credit card through at the grocery.
Floyd |
Floyd | It's funny, but you know something? In all the years I've worked at
Floyd | the factory, I've never been here before. Usually, I just go straight
Floyd | to my place on the assembly line. A few times, I've been sent to the
Floyd | loading dock to do things, but I've always just gone right past the

Floyd | As I step into the room, the first thing I notice is the loud

Floyd | something. It looks like it's... No. Oh God, no. Please no, it
Floyd | can't be. No! Please!.
Floyd |
Floyd | It's the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in my life. There are
Floyd | two conveyor belts running into the machine, one carrying widgets and
Floyd | the other wodgets. And it's fitting them together. It's doing
Floyd | exactly what I do, but a hundred times faster. I can hardly follow it
Floyd | with my eyes, it's fitting them together so quickly. I could never
Floyd | keep up with this thing. What do they need me for, now they've got
Floyd | this machine? All I've ever wanted to do was put widgets together. I
Floyd | thought I was the best, I had it made for life. And now with this
Floyd | thing... what am I? What am I good for? I'm so useless now, I don't
Floyd | even want to think about it. Will anyone care anymore if I live or

Floyd |
Floyd | I saw this movie once about these two guys who wrote music. One of
Floyd | them was really popular, but the other one wrote better music, and the
Floyd | first one knew it. He couldn't stand knowing someone else was better
Floyd | than him, so he tried to kill him.
Floyd |
Floyd | I think I understand now what that guy must have felt. I've always
Floyd | thought of myself as an artist. I put widgets together, and I always
Floyd | thought I was really good at it. No one could put those widgets
Floyd | together like I could. I guess it's like that for all artists. We go
Floyd | along doing our thing and thinking we're really good. And then one
Floyd | day we meet someone who's so much better, we don't know why we even
Floyd | bother trying. You've either got to give up, or find a way to get rid

Floyd | There's a big machine in the middle of the room, clanking away.

Floyd | the other wodgets, and the assembled widget-wodgets are coming out a
Floyd | chute on the other side and falling into a box
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "put widget on belt"
Floyd | I drop the widget onto the conveyor belt. Within seconds, it has
Floyd | disappeared into the machine. A moment later, there's a strange
Floyd | cracking sound. It's hard to describe exactly. I guess it sounds
Floyd | sort of like a square-pegged widget being forced into a round-holed
Floyd | wodget at high speed, under lots of force. It's followed by a sound
Floyd | of belts squealing, which ends abruptly with a loud snapping sound.
Floyd | Then without warning, there's a deafening BANG! When my ears stop
Floyd | ringing, I realize that the machine has stopped. A thin stream of
Floyd | smoke is coming from it.

ivanr says, "ooh, I bet we can do something with box and the complices"

Floyd | me in the face, his eyes bulging out like he was going to explode.
Floyd |
Floyd | "So, I'll bet you think you're very clever, don't you?" he wheezes.
Floyd | "Yes, very, very clever, huh? Well I'll show you who's clever. I'm

Floyd |

Floyd | looks like he's smiling. "No. I have an even better idea. I'll let
Floyd | the owners deal with you themselves. I'm sure they can find an
Floyd | appropriate...use...for you." This time he really does smile, and
Floyd | something about it sends a chill through my whole body.
Floyd |
Floyd | He spins around without another look and starts walking away. "Let's
Floyd | go. Bring him along!" I'm half dragged, half carried through a
Floyd | series of doorways, down a hall I've never seen before, through
Floyd | another set of doors. Suddenly I find myself staring at a final
Floyd | doorway. It's open, and there are stairs leading down into darkness.
Floyd | A coldness, and a strange musty smell, rises out of it.
Floyd |
Floyd | "OK," says Mr. Biggs. "Throw him in." There's a shove, the hands
Floyd | holding me let go, and I find myself tumbling down the stairs.
Floyd | Something cracks against my head on the way down, and I hit the bottom

Floyd |

Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x telephone"
Floyd | How strange. There's no buttons, no dial, nothing. Just a handset
Floyd | sitting on a cradle, and a blank area where the buttons ought to be.

Floyd | The parking lot is completely empty.
Floyd |
Floyd | As I stand waiting at the bus stop, I have the strangest feeling.
Floyd | It's like waking up from a trance, or leaving the auditorium at the
Floyd | end of a concert. I know I've been somewhere strange, witnessed
Floyd | amazing things, but I'm not certain exactly what they were. "States
Floyd | of dreamy melancholy, fits of aimless joy." Was I the audience or the
Floyd | performer? Did it really happen, or was it just a fantasy? A witch's
Floyd | spell? Am I the artist? And if not, then who is?
Floyd |
Floyd | I think I'll stop off at the mall on my way home. I need an ice cream
Floyd | cone.

Floyd | Dear Mom,
Floyd |
Floyd | Thanks a lot for the cookies you sent. They were really great. I
Floyd | still say you make the best oatmeal raisin cookies in the world.
Floyd |
Floyd | My new job is going really well. I never would have guessed that
Floyd | screwing caps onto toothpaste tubes could be so interesting. My boss,
Floyd | Mr. Bucket, says I have a natural talent for it.
Floyd |
Floyd | I was really lucky to find a job so quickly. A lot of the guys from
Floyd | Frobworks are still looking. No one's sure what the new owners are
Floyd | planning to do with the building yet, but there's a rumor that they
Floyd | want to start a computer game company. Pretty weird, huh?
Floyd |
Floyd | Anyway, thanks a lot. I'll write again soon. I love you a lot.

Knight_Otu says, "whoops."
DavidW says, "I guess Floyd was slow."
DavidW says, "Congrats! Try the OUTTAKES."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah, that must be it."
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "outtakes" Knight_Otu says, "Hm. Slow again."
DavidW asks, "I've forgotten but maybe there's some weird animation or something that's doing this delay?"
DavidW presses the yellow enter button.
DavidW presses the yellow enter button. Knight_Otu says, "Oh, we wouldn't see something like that, right."
DavidW says, "I don't remember what's in the outtakes except it's quite long."

Floyd |
Floyd | It's time for breakfast! I sit down to a delicious meal of fried eggs
Floyd | and start... ummm... excuse me.
Floyd |
Floyd | I'm sorry, I just can't do this. I can't stand eggs. Even the smell
Floyd | of them makes me sick. Couldn't we please change them to something
Floyd | else, like toast or cereal?
Floyd |
Floyd | OK, wait a minute. I have an idea. We'll keep the eggs, but as soon
Floyd | as they ask me to eat them, I'll realize the bus is coming. So I
Floyd | won't have time to eat them, and I can just grab a pop-tart or
Floyd | something instead. That way we can keep your whole "cooking the eggs"

Floyd |
Floyd | Dear Mom,
Floyd |
Floyd | I have some very important news to tell you. I have decided to get a
Floyd | job with a company that writes computer games. I know this will come
Floyd | as a disappointment to you, since you've always wanted me to work in a
Floyd | factory like you and dad. I know what you will say about family
Floyd | traditions and your great uncle Herbert and all that, but this is MY
Floyd | life, damn it. I'm sick of wasting my life putting stupid pieces of
Floyd | plastic together day after day after day. It's time I did something
Floyd | that I care about, for a change.
Floyd |
Floyd | And while I'm at it, what's up with the cookies? How many times have
Floyd | I told you that I can't stand oatmeal raisin cookies? Why do you
Floyd | insist on doing this to me? Are you trying to prove something, or can
Floyd | you simply not believe I could really feel differently from you about

Floyd |
Floyd | Thank you for the cookies you sent. I guess you forgot that I don't

Floyd |
Floyd | I have some wonderful news for you. I've decided to get a job with a
Floyd | company that writes computer games. I know it's a bit different from
Floyd | what you've always imagined for me. But this is a great opportunity,
Floyd | and I think I could be really good at it.
Floyd |
Floyd | I hope you won't be too disappointed by this. I just don't want to
Floyd | keep wasting my life working at an assembly line. Not that there's
Floyd | anything wrong with working on an assembly line. I know you and dad
Floyd | have done it all your lives, and you really like it. It's just that I
Floyd | don't want to keep wasting my life

Roger disappears through an invisible gap in the MUD. You think you may have heard the sounds of chatting before the gap closed again. DavidW says, "there it is."
ivanr says, "there you go,"
ivanr says, "*."
Knight_Otu says, "Took some time, but better late than never."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "So I guess our house didn't burn down after all!"
DavidW says, "I think this game won best PC award at the XYZZYies."
Knight_Otu says, "That, or putting caps on toothpaste tubes pays better than I expected."
Knight_Otu says, "They do have a certain voice."
ivanr says, "I think it deserves that nomination"
ivanr says, "It was also plenty atmospheric in parts"
Knight_Otu says, "So we didn't have Perry for this, but I'm running a transcript myself."
DavidW says, "At the following XYZZY Awards ceremony, I got to pretend to be this person presenting the PC award to Sting of the Wasp."
DavidW says, "So much fun."
Knight_Otu asks, "That's the one where everyone is an evil b-word, right?"
Knight_Otu says, "Especially the protagonist."
DavidW says, "More or less, yes."
DavidW says (to KO), "Make sure you send a copy of the transcript to Jacqueline, please."
Knight_Otu says, "Sure. Wouldn't want this session to vanish into thin air."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Anyway, it's time to log off for me. Good night!"
