Essay: Yesterday I Met an Old Man

First posted in June, 2004

Yesterday I met an old man. He wore the most unfashionable and inexpensive of clothes, but conversation with him made it quite clear that this was not for lack of funds. To put it simply, the man had lived. He was old and happy and full of fond memories of places he'd been and experiences he'd had. And I think that's how I'd ultimately like to be - relatively lacking in material possessions, or seemingly so, but rich in experiences and memories. Little or nothing to show to others for my life save for that which resides inside my mind.

Eyesight is in conflict with inner knowing. - Rumi
