The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Operate! written by Cody Sandifer, and Micropuzzle written by Les Howarth & Gavin Lambert. Operate! was originally released as part of the Textfire 12-pack in 1998. CF | Billowing lights bear down upon the clean, white body and supporting
CF | table. In a similar pattern of sterility, a single blank wall forms a
CF | perfect circle around the arena. Above and beyond, through sheets of
CF | brightness, a full gallery of onlookers peers in from behind a plastic
CF | shield.

CF | There is a bone vat here. To the side sits your instrument tray,
CF | neatly centered on a short push-cart.
CF | Sitting on the instrument tray, bone tongs and a scalpel can be
CF | seen.

Jacqueline says, "Gosh this is... not the attitude I ever adopted while watching someone else try to play Operation."
Jacqueline says, "Oh, except the original game wasn't just bones. It was organs, too."

Jacqueline says, "Basically there were little body parts in those holes in the board, and each of the holes was lined with metal, and if you made contact with your tweezers while trying to extract whatever you were trying to extract, it buzzed loudly at you. Maybe the man's nose also lit up red, I can't recall."
Roger says, "right, the popular parlour game"
Jacqueline says, "Calling it 'a popular parlor game' makes it sound Edwardian."
Roger says, "not to mention all the bonejacking"
Jacqueline says, "So, let's see if taking cues from the crowd continues to work..."

CF | fear, the latter in delight. Bones now shine from the man's gaping

CF | adaptation are the same. From the very start of the story, you can
CF | only make a maximum of 100 turns before the Maximiser self-destructs
CF | (for some unexplained reason) and you're forever stuck at your

CF | This is perhaps a little less fair in this edition of the story — due
CF | to the expanded Inform parsing capability I've fleshed out many of the
CF | descriptions and scenery, and made some additional silly responses to
CF | various actions (like trying to remote-control different things), so
CF | it's pretty much inevitable that your first run through the story will
CF | end in failure — and probably several more — in both versions, a
CF | perfect run through the game (without examining anything you don't
CF | need to, and not making any wrong turns) will eat up 45 of the 100
CF | turns you're allowed, so there isn't a lot of room for playing around,
CF | unfortunately. Still, I felt it'd be too much of a departure from the
CF | original to remove or increase this limit.

CF | An especially peculiar choice in the original was that if you tried to
CF | UNLOCK TERMINAL without carrying the key, it would announce TAMPER and
CF | dramatically penalise the turn count — but also start announcing just

CF | passwords just wastes turns but doesn't trigger the tamper detection.

CF | This version couldn't quite exactly imitate that (at least not without
CF | seeming a bit petty, due to Inform's naturally better parser for
CF | two-noun actions), but it does link several related actions to
CF | triggering a similar effect.

CF | at the end (fun fact: the train was one of the objects it would award

CF | possible). And some of those items needed to be left behind in order
CF | to solve certain puzzles. As such, the maximum number of items you
CF | can still be carrying at the end of the story is actually 5 — if not
CF | for a bug that steals the key from you at the last moment, so it's
CF | actually 4. This makes the actual maximum score 15 in that version —
CF | or at least it would, except that for some unexplained reason you
CF | start the game with 8 points already. All up, this makes the
CF | real maximum score in the original come to 23 points. (And
CF | yes, that does mean that solving a puzzle correctly could result in
CF | your score decreasing.)

CF | This version does things a little bit differently. You're awarded a
CF | point whenever you first pick up an item, and you're not penalised by
CF | dropping one again, or using it to solve a puzzle correctly (although
CF | you are penalised if you manage to do something that will prevent you

CF | were fairly popular at the time. There were many different popular
CF | computer systems, which all spoke relatively common flavours of BASIC
CF | (albeit with some differences) — but they had incompatible hardware,
CF | and most could only store programs on audio cassette tapes that none
CF | of the others could read.

CF | As such, while it was possible to purchase commercial cassettes (for
CF | one specific system) containing games made professionally, hobbyists
CF | tended to publish the source code of their simpler games and programs
CF | in magazines, where the reader would type in a program that they found
CF | interesting in order to play it — often learning a bit about
CF | programming along the way, albeit passively (or more commonly, when a
CF | typo meant the game crashed and you needed to figure out where and
CF | why). Even when some hobbyist magazines started including cassettes
CF | with preloaded programs, these were usually still written in BASIC and
CF | people could peruse the source code for anything they found
CF | interesting. This was the one of the bastions of open-source gaming
CF | at the time, and no doubt helped motivate many people to learn to

CF | How do you distribute a game — especially a puzzle game — in the

CF | of its complete source code, where the person who will be playing the
CF | game needs to read (and re-read several times to avoid making typos)
CF | and type in every single line — and how do you keep them from
CF | spoiling
CF | the solutions to the games by doing so?

CF | Many games, of course, didn't even try to solve that. But some went
CF | to some lengths to obfuscate the source a bit with confusing variable
CF | names, convoluted logic paths, or even ciphering some of the data
CF | lookup tables used by the game. RAM constraints both helped (the need
CF | to pack more code and data into as small a space as possible, leading
CF | to more terse and minimal hard-to-read code) and hindered (harder to
CF | justify putting in some deciphering code) this process.

CF | Of course, this meant that some people had additional fun after (or
CF | sometimes before) playing a game, of looking through its code and
CF | trying to work out how it all fit together to produce the final game.
CF | You can think of it as the final puzzle challenge of a puzzle game.
CF | In fact, this very impulse (along with a hefty dose of nostalgia) is
CF | one of the main reasons why this remake exists and you were able to
CF | play it.

CF | The original version of this story was written in exactly 200 lines of
CF | BASIC code — although that's not quite an exact measure after all,
CF | because the book was intended to work on several popular computers of
CF | the time that all had very slightly different quirks, either needing
CF | slightly different commands for certain actions, or needing certain
CF | things trimmed out due to RAM constraints. This meant that in
CF | addition to the main program listing were a few amendment notes with
CF | different lines to type in on specific systems or other small changes.

CF | Meanwhile, this remake version consists of about 750 lines of Inform 7
CF | code (an approximation since I'm still adding tweaks here and there at
CF | time of writing), which in turn compiles to about 69k lines of Inform
CF | 6 code. (Most of that, of course, is the Standard Library -- Inform's
CF | parser is considerably smarter than the one in the original.
CF | But then that's also not counting the interpreter that's bringing this
CF | into your browser, or other platform of choice.)

CF | retained by the publishers (although permission to adapt the code was
CF | expressly granted). More recently, permission to produce modern
