ClubFloyd Transcript:
Episode in the Life of an Artist by Peter Eastman
As played on ifMUD on 2018-04-15

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Episode in the Life of an Artist written by Peter Eastman. It won Best Individual PC in the 2003 XYZZY Awards and took 11th place in the 9th Annual Interactive Fiction Competition (2003). You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Roger says, "So if people had not heard, Jacq is AFK today"
Iria asks, "So we're skipping it today?"
Knight_Otu asks, "Well, we don't need to, but is someone here with access to Perry?"
Roger says, "It's kind of an open-mike night"
ivanr says, "I wonder what sort of game would be appropriate to an open-mic"
ivanr says, "so..."
Knight_Otu says, "Well, not sure."
ivanr asks, "I'm racking my brains. Raising the Flag on Mount Yo Momma, maybe?"
Knight_Otu says, "The club played it before, but it wouldn't be the first to be replayed."
ivanr says, "whoops. I'm just riffing on the open mic thing, sorry"
Knight_Otu says, "I guess I'm not a big help with deciding."
ivanr says, "looking at the suggestions, Episode in the Life of an Artist might be all right"
ivanr says, "it's comp length and probably not being saved for anything"
ivanr says, "if people want to do something"
Knight_Otu says, "I'd be up for it, though we don't have the transcript bot"
Knight_Otu says, "I'm running a transcript myself, though I have no idea how helpful that would be."
ivanr says, "oh, yeah, I'm new here so I have no idea"
Knight_Otu says, "Huh."
Knight_Otu says, "Okay, no sleepmask. Maybe I did it wrong."
ivanr says, "*shrugs*"
Knight_Otu says, "Shouldn't be a dealbreaker unless there is critical information in thestatus bar."
ivanr says, "(I just pulled it up in a regular interpreter, and all that's in the status bar is the location and turn count, so I think we're okay)"
Knight_Otu says, "Sounds good."
Knight_Otu says, "Well, we sure have a self-image."
ivanr says, "I have the sneaking suspicion that we (the PC) are being made fun of"
Knight_Otu says, "Possible."
Knight_Otu says, "Aww."
ivanr exclaims, "a getting-dressed puzzle!"
Knight_Otu says, "Let's just streak."
Karona laughs.
Plover says, "Hi"
Knight_Otu says, "Hello."
ivanr says, "we just woke up"
ivanr says, "can't argue with that"
Knight_Otu says, "True."
Plover asks, "Try ?help??"
Knight_Otu asks, "I think we're ready to move?"
ivanr says, "I was about to say the same thing"
Knight_Otu asks, "Bath or living room?"
Plover says, "It is like one of the Infocom games."
ivanr says, "I fear a washing-up puzzle, so let's try the living room first"
Knight_Otu says, "Heh."
Knight_Otu says, "Insteadwe get a cooking puzzle, it seems."
ivanr asks, "should we see if we're allowed to step out of the apartment?"
Plover says, "And the game is in first son, rather like the Scott adams ones."
Plover says, "Person"
Knight_Otu says, "We can try."
Karona says, "Interesting."
Roger says, "But not in all-caps, for which we can be thankful"
ivanr asks, "wait, what?"
Knight_Otu says, "Fair enough."
Knight_Otu says, "No shirt, no shoes."
ivanr says, "it did mention other clean clothes still sitting in the dresser..."
Plover exclaims, "No shirt, no shoes, no service!"
ivanr says, "right, shirt and shoes"
Plover asks, "Shall we go west?"
Knight_Otu asks, "Shall we search?"
Plover asks, "I should have asked, but who?s the driver?"
ivanr asks, "what are we searching for?"
Knight_Otu says, "I think the room description is wrong about the hallway being to the west - we came in from the east."
Knight_Otu says, "We have no designated driver right now."
Plover says, "A bit Hitchhiker's Guide, when the game says the exit on the Heart of was aft, but it was port."
ivanr asks, "should we go back to the bedroom and try to put on the rest of our clothes?"
Knight_Otu says, "Sure"
Karona says, "ivanr, I like that idea"
ivanr says, "hmm"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Liar!"
Karona asks, "Did my text display twice?"
Knight_Otu says, "So we're not meant to go outside."
Plover asks, "I typed ?look?"
Knight_Otu says, "I don't think we're getting more clothing."
Plover says, "Deffinately like one of the Zork ."
ivanr asks, "maybe it's just a matter of shoes?"
Plover says, "games."
Knight_Otu says, "Maybe."
Plover asks, "Do you think we should enter the closet?"
Karona says, "Getting dressed should not be this hard"
Plover says, "Well, it is a game after all."
Knight_Otu says, "I don't think we can enter the dresser."
ivanr says, "ha"
Knight_Otu says, "Huh, 100 points."
Knight_Otu says, "And we have yet to get a single one."
Plover says, "this is gives us the rank, of, not getting dressed."
ivanr says, "we also have yet to put a shirt on, so"
ivanr says, "yeah :p"
ivanr exclaims, "there's a closet!"
Knight_Otu says, "Doh."
Plover says, "I?m sure the description of the clothes said shirt, or"
Plover cheers at his fellow ClubFloyders
ivanr exclaims, "you forgot the shoes!"
Plover says, "wtf"
Karona says, "Good thinking, Plover"
ivanr says, "(sorry)"
ivanr asks, "are we going to try to leave again?"
Plover asks, "Recon weshould go s.?"
Knight_Otu says, "I guess we can't leave until we sorted everything in here."
Plover says, "we use the stove to make breakfast."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Cooking puzzle is go!"
Plover asks, "Should we ?cook bacon? as apposed to ?put bacon in stove??"
Knight_Otu says, "Put the frying... right."
ivanr says, "sorry"
Knight_Otu says, "Don't be."
ivanr says, "I just remembered we were carrying that"
Plover says, "Yey I have, or we have, made a virtual"
ivanr says, "I guess we gotta leave now"
Knight_Otu says, "Let's urn of the stove..."
Knight_Otu says, "Or not."
ivanr says, "if we get the house-burned-down ending I'll be pretty impressed"
Karona says, "I just saw a poptart the other day when I replayed 9:05"
Plover says, "I hope our friend in the game himself.-)"
Plover says, "In 9:05, the poptart is in the kitchennet."
Karona exclaims, "Plover Yes!"
Plover gets out the InvissiClues booklet for the game
Knight_Otu slaps the invisiclues booklet away.
ivanr says, "I bet this is just a cutscene"
ivanr says, "that ends after a set number of turns"
ivanr says, "I don't see any indication of a puzzle"
Knight_Otu asks, "We probably just need to eat the poptart?"
Knight_Otu says, "Heh. We never did visit the bathroom."
Plover says, "a oiler"
ivanr says, "oh man, I wonder if it was possible to wash up and get different messages here"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Hah!"
Karona says, "0_o"
Plover asks, "*** we have died?"
Knight_Otu says, "No, but we may have no house to return to."
Plover says, "Guess we are homeless."
Plover exclaims, "in the game, at least!"
ivanr says, "I think this is an interesting game design moment, re communicating the difference between "you messed up" vs. "I remember this so you get a funny message""
Plover asks the in-game bus driver if he can get back to what is left of his
Plover says, "Could be a *long* bus-ride"
Knight_Otu says, "Maybe, maybe not."
Plover drinks winesome
Knight_Otu says, "... a chicken."
Plover says, "I will have to go."
Knight_Otu The chicken says "Your house is burning brightly right now."
Karona laughs.
ivanr says, "this sounds important"
Knight_Otu says, "Plot twist - we worked at frobworks and only now hear about being out of a job."
ivanr says, "I wouldn't be surprised, actually"
Knight_Otu says, "Out of a house, out of a job, and we haven't showered. What a day. :p"
ivanr says, "and our factory has been bought out by werewolves"
ivanr says, "or something"
Karona exclaims, "But at least we got to eat a pop-hyphen-tart!"
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
ivanr says, "ooh"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "zorkmids!"
ivanr says, "and it looks like we do work at *a* factory, at least"
Knight_Otu says, "Indeed."
ivanr says, "this looks timed"
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
Knight_Otu asks, "You wanna drive it?"
ivanr says, "I might have to step away in the near future"
Knight_Otu says, "Okay then. I'll try."
ivanr exclaims, "aha!"
ivanr says, "put in, I imagine"
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah, thanks."
ivanr exclaims, "we did it!"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Oh no!"
ivanr says, "I remember that emerson reference from paul o'brian's review of this game. I am charmed by our PC"
ivanr says, "wait, uh oh"
ivanr asks, "should we go west?"
Knight_Otu says, "Probably."
ivanr says, "I saw we examine mr biggs"
ivanr says, "things are heating up"
ivanr asks, "do we follow them?"
Knight_Otu says, "Well that confirms we are at that factory."
Knight_Otu says, "Sure."
ivanr says, "so, now we have to figure out which way we go"
Knight_Otu says, "Presumably east or west."
ivanr says, "we could run out of the factory, or we could wander around and maybe learn something"
ivanr says, "yeah"
Knight_Otu asks, "east was mentioned first of those two, so that?"
ivanr exclaims, "sure!"
ivanr says, "our PC is not very clever"
Knight_Otu asks, "Has he overtaken us?"
ivanr says, "considering Mr. Biggs just left the building, if I read correctly"
Knight_Otu says, "Right, he did."
ivanr says, "although I guess we don't know that for sure"
Knight_Otu says, "I misread that and thought we left him behind."
Knight_Otu asks, "Knock, or further east?"
ivanr says, "I bet there's something interesting in that office if it lets us in, so I say we knock"
ivanr says, "ah, we are being prodded"
ivanr asks, "ask him about himself, maybe?"
Knight_Otu says, "Well that's not ominous."
ivanr says, "I wonder if there's a way to listen at the door, or if we should just continue east"
Knight_Otu says, "Good thinking."
Knight_Otu says, "Ominouser and ominouser."
ivanr says, "yeah, something bad is going on"
Knight_Otu asks, "Further east then?"
ivanr says, "let's"
Knight_Otu says, "Choices, choices."
ivanr asks, "down to the basement?"
Knight_Otu says, "Sure."
ivanr says, "no dice"
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
ivanr says, "ooh, x the picture"
ivanr says, "bah, humbug"
Knight_Otu asks, "Aw. Landing dock next?"
ivanr exclaims, "sure, out we go!"
ivanr says, "maybe we should search them too"
Knight_Otu says, "Heh."
ivanr says, "oh, and I just caught that"
ivanr says, "that sounds like a hint"
Knight_Otu says, "Well then."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
Knight_Otu says, "Let's go west then."
ivanr says, "oh, right"
ivanr says, "yes, good idea"
Knight_Otu asks, "Huh, still?"
Knight_Otu says, "Oh. Wonder what we missed there."
ivanr says, "janitor's closet seems like a likely place for a crowbar"
ivanr says, "try entering it"
ivanr says, "oh, nvm"
ivanr says, "I was lagging"
ivanr says, "yeah, take and wear the uniform probably"
Knight_Otu says, "No coming out for this protagonist."
ivanr says, "I wouldn't be surprised if the janitor has a keycard, too"
ivanr says, "okay, well, search the uniform"
Knight_Otu says, "Espionage, my good person."
ivanr says, "hmm"
Knight_Otu asks, "Oh, but you'll take it, eh?"
Knight_Otu says, "Maybe we will yet wear it."
ivanr says, "okay, so we can check out the cafeteria or the restroom"
Knight_Otu asks, "Restroom or cafeteria?"
Knight_Otu says, "Timing."
ivanr says, "why don't we try the restroom first"
Knight_Otu says, "sure."
ivanr says, "since we so sadly missed it last time"
Knight_Otu says, "Heh."
Knight_Otu says, "But still no shower for us."
ivanr says, "alas"
ivanr says, "there might not be much to do here"
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
ivanr says, "this might be like the whole getting-dressed sequence - mimesis, as they say"
ivanr asks, "should we just check out the cafeteria?"
Knight_Otu says, "True. So let's go for the cafeteria, I guess."
ivanr asks, ">read, maybe?"
ivanr asks, "one more time for luck?"
Knight_Otu says, "Right."
ivanr says, "we could try opening the window, I guess"
ivanr says, "hmm"
Knight_Otu asks, "Snoop in the office?"
ivanr says, "sure"
ivanr says, "examine the desk"
ivanr says, "okay, papers and telephone"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Grues!"
ivanr says, "*ominous music plays*"
ivanr says, "the description of the desk might be hinting that we can look under it"
Knight_Otu says, "A mix of modern and zorkian setting."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Ah ha!"
ivanr says, "this will make up for that bacon we missed"
Knight_Otu says, "An apple a day..."
Knight_Otu says, "Everything closed. The perfect crime."
Knight_Otu says, "And since Mr Biggs doesn't know our actual name..."
ivanr exclaims, "now, down to the key-card door!"
ivanr says, "haha, yeah"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Yarr!"
ivanr says, "oh boy"
ivanr asks, "should we explore the other doors first?"
Knight_Otu says, "We probably... right."
Knight_Otu asks, "North first?"
ivanr says, "sure"
Knight_Otu says, "Okay."
ivanr says, "oy"
ivanr says, "maybe our PC can be convinced to wear that uniform now"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Ah! Now we get the uniform!"
ivanr says, "let's check out that machinery"
ivanr says, "we could try asking the guy about stuff, I bet"
Knight_Otu says, "Hm."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah, guessed so."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "But it would be convenient!"
ivanr says, "if we didn't get him in one hit, we might find ourselves in some trouble"
ivanr says, "besides, our PC doesn't seem like the type"
Knight_Otu says, "True, true."
ivanr says, "we could try another one of the doors"
Knight_Otu says, "So further west seems the only option."
ivanr says, "yeah"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
ivanr exclaims, "aaaah!"
ivanr says, "oooh"
ivanr says, "Now we *really* need that crowbar."
Plover asks, "have I missed anything?"
Knight_Otu says, "Quite a bit, I think."
ivanr says, "this game's philosophical tack is pretty interesting, and I think it depends on how seriously we're supposed to take this guy"
Knight_Otu says, "I am a bit sceptical about their artistry."
ivanr says, "welp"
ivanr says, "yeah"
Knight_Otu asks, "Wait, still 0 points!?"
ivanr says, "I bet it's all-or-nothing."
Knight_Otu says, "Probably."
ivanr asks, "I think the only thing left to do is barge in on the meeting, right?"
ivanr says, "unless there's a door we haven't tried"
Knight_Otu says, "I think so. The only other door is locked, I think."
Plover: : counts: counts the: counts the score: counts the score on: counts the score on his
ivanr says, "ooh, I bet we can do something with box and the complices"
ivanr exclaims, "oh, wow!"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Woo!"
ivanr exclaims, "Take that, automation!"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Widgetage!"
ivanr says, "something something rage against the machine, etc"
ivanr says, "let's check our score"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Rather than sabotage!"
Knight_Otu says, "Aww..."
ivanr asks, "what do you want from us, game!?"
ivanr says, "there is still the meeting room"
Knight_Otu says, "True."
ivanr says, "oh, ****"
Knight_Otu says, "We are likely to be eaten by a company of grues."
ivanr says, "hmmm"
ivanr exclaims, "oh, right, the flashlight!"
ivanr asks, "I guess we go up, now?"
Knight_Otu says, "Good thing chicken man wasn't repelled by our nonshowering."
Knight_Otu says, "I suspect it won't be that easy, but sure."
Knight_Otu says, "Right."
ivanr says, "okay, so we're going to have to find a key or a crowbar or something in this basement."
Knight_Otu says, "Or all of it."
ivanr says, "Brrr..."
Knight_Otu asks, "South?"
ivanr says, "Sure."
ivanr says, "Oh boy."
Knight_Otu says, "Uh oh."
ivanr exclaims, "A grue nest!"
ivanr says, "oof"
Knight_Otu asks, "Flee to the east?"
ivanr says, "Good idea."
ivanr says, "aaaaah"
ivanr says, "Reinventing the wheel! womp womp"
ivanr says, "hmmm"
ivanr says, "These are pretty good."
Knight_Otu says, "It had to end sometime, I guess."
ivanr says, "Aaah, the other end of the grue hotline."
Knight_Otu says, "Now where could the other end be.... right."
Knight_Otu says, "Batteries, please hold."
ivanr says, "Right on."
Knight_Otu says, "I think we have to brave the nest..."
ivanr says, "We can still go west from here."
ivanr says, "Oh, right. There's my spatial reasoning for you."
Knight_Otu says, "That's where we started."
ivanr says, "Nest it is, then."
Knight_Otu says, "Yes..."
ivanr says, "Oh."
ivanr says, "Huh."
ivanr asks, "We could try to unlock that door with various things, I guess?"
Knight_Otu says, "Maybe."
ivanr says, "Or maybe we have to turn the flashlight off."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "!"
ivanr says, "gulp"
ivanr says, "This feels like we're headed for a death ending."
ivanr asks, "turn it on now? or wait?"
ivanr says, "Hm"
Knight_Otu asks, "Well not turning it on it seems?"
Knight_Otu says, "Hm."
ivanr says, "Well, that's not the solution, I guess."
ivanr says, "re the flashlight"
ivanr says, "This is meta-game logic, but whatever the solution is presumably was designed to force us to explore the whole basement."
ivanr says, "so I don't think it involves just the nest."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
ivanr exclaims, "Aha!"
Knight_Otu says, "Oh."
ivanr says, "Well, well, well."
Knight_Otu says, "Hm."
ivanr says, "whoops, I blinked out for a minute there"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Hi David!"
DavidW says, "Hi. I overslept.:{"
DavidW says, "Episode of an Artist, I see."
ivanr exclaims, "Indeed!"
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
ivanr says, "We've been pacing around in this basement for a while."
Knight_Otu says, "Though we doubt the artistry of the protagonist."
DavidW asks, "That's the one where he has a book of sayings and quotations, right?"
ivanr says, "Yeah."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
ivanr says, "We haven't even examined that booklet, I think."
Knight_Otu says, "True."
DavidW asks, "Is that also the one where a guy was wearing a duck on his head on the bus?"
ivanr says, "It was a chicken, but yes."
Knight_Otu says, "Chicken. But yeah."
DavidW says, "oh, okay. It's been ages."
ivanr says, "The book thing is kind of sweet. I'm glad we examined that."
ivanr asks, "Did the circuit breaker seem to actually do anything?"
Knight_Otu says, "I don't think so."
Knight_Otu says, "We may have to find the light switch too."
DavidW says, "Looking at my notes, you're quite close to the end."
Knight_Otu says, "That's good to hear."
DavidW says, "Also, there's a nice bonus command when you win the game."
Knight_Otu asks, "Will it tell us whether we burned down our house?"
Knight_Otu says, "We kind of left the stove on."
DavidW says, "My notes don't say."
DavidW says, "I can give you the link to my notes since they're online, now, but they're also spoilers."
Knight_Otu says, "We've been flailing in the basement for a bit, but I'm not sure we're ready for spoilers yet."
ivanr says, "hmph"
Knight_Otu says, "I'm thinking we want to turn on the lights. We've switched the breaker, but can't find anything to turn on the lights themselves."
Knight_Otu says, "Okay, I think I'm out of ideas..."
DavidW asks, "What have you done with the cabinet?"
Knight_Otu says, "We've pushed it to reveal the breaker box, and opened it and read the papers."
DavidW asks, "and with the box?"
Knight_Otu says, "We tried to climb it but couldn't."
DavidW says, "The breaker box, I mean."
Knight_Otu says, "We opened it and switched the switch."
Knight_Otu says, "Sorry, typing a bit slowly."
DavidW says, "hm. My notes say 'turn on switch'."
DavidW says, "After that, my notes say: (lights & scream & crash!)"
DavidW asks, "Did that happen?"
ivanr says, "oh, maybe we need to turn off the flashlight now"
Knight_Otu says, "No..."
Knight_Otu asks, "Maybe we should restore and try again?"
DavidW says, "Sometimes my notes leave out stuff. I wonder if I did that this time."
Knight_Otu says, "I think we can safely restore. I think the breaker is the only thing we did after our last save."
Knight_Otu says, "That is new."
DavidW says, "oh. Maybe 'switch switch' is malcoded."
Knight_Otu says, "Probably."
Knight_Otu says, "Okay, maybe we can just get out now."
DavidW says, "You should be able to find something new or changed somewhere."
Knight_Otu says, "I must be getting tired."
Knight_Otu says, "Heh."
DavidW says, "There, that hole is new."
Knight_Otu says, "Er."
DavidW says, "push space, maybe"
Knight_Otu says, "Oh right."
Knight_Otu says, "whoops."
DavidW says, "I guess Floyd was slow."
DavidW says, "Congrats! Try the OUTTAKES."
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah, that must be it."
Knight_Otu says, "Hm. Slow again."
DavidW asks, "I've forgotten but maybe there's some weird animation or something that's doing this delay?"
Knight_Otu says, "Oh, we wouldn't see something like that, right."
DavidW says, "I don't remember what's in the outtakes except it's quite long."
DavidW says, "there it is."
ivanr says, "there you go,"
ivanr says, "*."
Knight_Otu says, "Took some time, but better late than never."
Knight_Otu exclaims, "So I guess our house didn't burn down after all!"
DavidW says, "I think this game won best PC award at the XYZZYies."
Knight_Otu says, "That, or putting caps on toothpaste tubes pays better than I expected."
Knight_Otu says, "They do have a certain voice."
ivanr says, "I think it deserves that nomination"
ivanr says, "It was also plenty atmospheric in parts"
DavidW says, "At the following XYZZY Awards ceremony, I got to pretend to be this person presenting the PC award to Sting of the Wasp."
DavidW says, "So much fun."
Knight_Otu asks, "That's the one where everyone is an evil b-word, right?"
Knight_Otu says, "Especially the protagonist."
DavidW says, "More or less, yes."

Floyd | of little minds, and he knew what he was talking about. He knew that
Floyd | sometimes the widgets would be green, and sometimes they'd be blue.
Floyd | So I've been doing this job for eight years, and every widget I've
Floyd | ever seen has been green. That doesn't mean the next one won't be
Floyd | blue. You've got to just take what comes and go on with your job.
Floyd | Emerson understood that, and that's why he was such a great genius.
Floyd |
Floyd | I fit the blue widget into the red wodget. They go together with
Floyd | an... almost satisfying... clack!.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "put complex on belt"
Floyd | I put the widget-wodget complex on the conveyor belt, which carries it
Floyd | off down the line.
Floyd |
Floyd | Clop! A blue widget appears out of the chute.

Floyd |
Floyd | Clop! A red wodget appears out of the chute.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "put widget in wodget"
Floyd | I put the peg of the blue widget into the hole of the red wodget
Floyd | and... wait a minute! It won't go in! Hey - this wodget has a round
Floyd | hole! What's going on here? What the...! OK, wait... just a
Floyd | second... don't panic. Take a deep breath. It's going to be OK.
Floyd | Everything's going to be OK.
Floyd |
Floyd | Fine, so things change. The world is like that. Widgets used to be
Floyd | green and now they're grue. I mean blue. And wodgets used to have
Floyd | square holes and now they have round ones. That's OK. Round is a
Floyd | fine shape for a hole. I just have to put the peg into it anyway.
Floyd |
Floyd | But it won't fit! No! I can't deal with this! Someone must have
Floyd | made a mistake! They can't expect me to put these together. I just
Floyd | can't do it. No one can do it! I've got to find someone and tell
Floyd | them they've made a mistake. Then the holes will go back to being
Floyd | square, and everything will be OK again.
Floyd |
Floyd | That's odd... something seems to be happening further down the
Floyd | assembly line. I can't tell what's going on, but there's a lot of
Floyd | shouting, and I can see people running. Suddenly there's a clank, and
Floyd | the conveyor belt comes to a stop!
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd | Perhaps you're wondering how I know the conveyor belt runs east to
Floyd | west. Well, I checked. "If you don't know where you're going, you
Floyd | probably won't get there." I don't know who said that. I saw it on a
Floyd | poster once. That very same day, I went out and got this
Floyd | super-durable, patent-pending outdoorsman's wrist-watch with built in
Floyd | compass, and since then I've always known exactly which way I was
Floyd | going.
Floyd |
Floyd | As I walk along the conveyor belt, I can see the room emptying out
Floyd | fast. By the time I reach the far end, most of the workers are gone,
Floyd | and those who are left seem to be heading for the door. Mr. Biggs,
Floyd | the president of the factory, is standing next to the doorway and
Floyd | shouting at them. He almost looks like he's going to step in their
Floyd | way and try to block the exit, but he knows he'd get trampled if he
Floyd | tried.
Floyd |
Floyd | Factory Main Floor
Floyd | This is the west end of the main floor of the factory. The
Floyd | conveyor belt passes down the length of the room and disappears into
Floyd | the wall to the west. A large set of double doors leads north to the
Floyd | lobby.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x biggs"
Floyd | For some reason, Mr. Biggs always makes me think of a bulldog. He
Floyd | can't be much more than five feet tall, and you always feel like he's
Floyd | about to attack you. No one messes with Mr. Biggs. I mean no one.
Floyd |
Floyd | Mr. Biggs glances up at me. "Get back to work!" he shouts.
Floyd | "There's absolutely nothing to be alarmed about! The company has some
Floyd | new owners, and they're just making a few changes. That's all there
Floyd | is..." He breaks off and lunges at the door in a desperate attempt to
Floyd | keep the last of the workers from getting away. He stumbles over his
Floyd | own feet, barely avoids falling, and collides with the wall. "Come
Floyd | BACK here!" he shouts, dashing out the door after them. It swings
Floyd | shut behind him, and the room becomes almost silent.

Floyd | and south to the main floor of the factory. There are hallways to

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x plant"
Floyd | I guess a plant that's made of plastic is a lot easier to take care of
Floyd | than a regular one. You never have to water it, just dust it once in
Floyd | a while, and it doesn't get sick or turn brown or anything like that,
Floyd | though if someone fell on it and broke it or something it wouldn't
Floyd | grow back the way a regular plant would. But then I guess you could
Floyd | just buy a new one. I wonder what company makes these things. If I

Floyd | I know Mr. Biggs said there was nothing to worry about, but I'm not
Floyd | sure I believe him. I never trust anything the first time someone
Floyd | says it. I learned that from a guy called Lewis Carroll. He said,
Floyd | "What I tell you three times is true." What he meant is that everyone
Floyd | says a lot of stuff. Some of it's true and some of it isn't. If you
Floyd | want to really know, you've got to ask them again to make sure they

Floyd |
Floyd | I think I understand now what that guy must have felt. I've always

Floyd | Basement
Floyd | Another basement room, just like the others. This one isn't quite
Floyd | empty: a tall metal filing cabinet stands against one wall. A small
Floyd | metal box, previously hidden by the cabinet, is mounted on the wall.
Floyd | Doorways lead north and west.

Floyd | Basement
Floyd | This is the oddest room. Well, the room itself is ordinary enough
Floyd | - more concrete, more pipes, doorways leading east and north. It
Floyd | looks like this was once a storeroom. I can see discolored patches on
Floyd | the walls and floor where large boxes must have sat for a long time.
Floyd |
Floyd | It's the current contents of the room that are strange. No boxes or
Floyd | furniture anymore, just a huge pile of... stuff... in the middle of
Floyd | the floor. It's a mass of all sorts of odds and ends: scraps of
Floyd | cloth, old phone books, broken mattresses, and who knows what else.
Floyd | It looks like a giant rat's nest. The strange musty smell that fills
Floyd | the basement is stronger here, like it was coming from this pile.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x nest"
Floyd | Please, don't make me go any closer. I don't like this place. I
Floyd | don't know what it is, but I want to leave. Please...

Floyd | Basement
Floyd | I'm in what must be the basement of the factory. The walls and
Floyd | floor are made of concrete, and the ceiling is covered with pipes and
Floyd | ventilation ducts. Large metal light fixtures hang down at regular
Floyd | intervals. There is a thick layer of dust on the floor. Otherwise,
Floyd | the room is completely empty.
Floyd |
Floyd | Open doorways lead south and east. A metal staircase attached to the
Floyd | north wall leads upward.

Floyd | This is another room, just like the last one. There are doorways
Floyd | leading west and south. The room is almost completely empty, except
Floyd | for one thing: sitting right in the center of the concrete floor is a
Floyd | little table, the sort of fancy table made from curved pieces of wood
Floyd | that you find in antique stores. And on top of the table is a
Floyd | telephone.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x tble"
Floyd | I don't know the word "tble".
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x table"
Floyd | It's a little wooden table. The feet are shaped like claws holding
Floyd | balls, and the legs are carved to look like they're covered with
Floyd | flowers. I have no idea what this thing is doing here. I can hardly
Floyd | imagine anywhere that it would look more out of place. I don't
Floyd | understand anything that's going on.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "e"

Floyd | Stairs
Floyd | I'm standing on a narrow metal staircase which leads down to the
Floyd | basement, and up to a closed door. Or rather, it would be closed if
Floyd | there weren't a huge hole smashed right through the middle. It looks
Floyd | like a freight train went through here, and the door got in the way.

Floyd | I climb through the hole in the door to the hallway on the other side.
Floyd | It takes a few wrong turns, but eventually I find my way back upstairs
Floyd | again. The whole factory seems to be deserted. Not a sign of anyone.
Floyd | The parking lot is completely empty.
Floyd |
Floyd | As I stand waiting at the bus stop, I have the strangest feeling.
Floyd | It's like waking up from a trance, or leaving the auditorium at the
Floyd | end of a concert. I know I've been somewhere strange, witnessed
Floyd | amazing things, but I'm not certain exactly what they were. "States
Floyd | of dreamy melancholy, fits of aimless joy." Was I the audience or the
Floyd | performer? Did it really happen, or was it just a fantasy? A witch's
Floyd | spell? Am I the artist? And if not, then who is?
Floyd |
Floyd | I think I'll stop off at the mall on my way home. I need an ice cream

Floyd |
Floyd | I was really lucky to find a job so quickly. A lot of the guys from

Floyd | planning to do with the building yet, but there's a rumor that they
Floyd | want to start a computer game company. Pretty weird, huh?

Floyd |
Floyd | OK, wait a minute. I have an idea. We'll keep the eggs, but as soon

Floyd | won't have time to eat them, and I can just grab a pop-tart or

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Dear Mom,
Floyd |
Floyd | I have some very important news to tell you. I have decided to get a
Floyd | job with a company that writes computer games. I know this will come
Floyd | as a disappointment to you, since you've always wanted me to work in a
Floyd | factory like you and dad. I know what you will say about family
Floyd | traditions and your great uncle Herbert and all that, but this is MY
Floyd | life, damn it. I'm sick of wasting my life putting stupid pieces of
Floyd | plastic together day after day after day. It's time I did something
Floyd | that I care about, for a change.
Floyd |
Floyd | And while I'm at it, what's up with the cookies? How many times have
Floyd | I told you that I can't stand oatmeal raisin cookies? Why do you
Floyd | insist on doing this to me? Are you trying to prove something, or can
Floyd | you simply not believe I could really feel differently from you about
Floyd | anything in the world?

Floyd |
Floyd | Dear Mom,
Floyd |
Floyd | Thank you for the cookies you sent. I guess you forgot that I don't
Floyd | eat oatmeal raisin cookies, but I really appreciate the thought.
Floyd |
Floyd | I have some wonderful news for you. I've decided to get a job with a
Floyd | company that writes computer games. I know it's a bit different from
Floyd | what you've always imagined for me. But this is a great opportunity,
Floyd | and I think I could be really good at it.
Floyd |
Floyd | I hope you won't be too disappointed by this. I just don't want to
Floyd | keep wasting my life working at an assembly line. Not that there's
Floyd | anything wrong with working on an assembly line. I know you and dad
Floyd | have done it all your lives, and you really like it. It's just that I
Floyd | don't want to keep wasting my life
