ClubFloyd Transcript:
A Fly on the Wall, or An Appositional Eye by Nigel Jayne
As played on ifMUD on April 30, 2017

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of A Fly on the Wall, or An Appositional Eye written by Nigel Jayne. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Jacqueline says, "Golly"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "All the Floydable SpringThing games are loaded."
Jacqueline says, "I did that much before I abandoned you all."
Genevieve says, "So how dare you have a paying job, and have to do such human things as eating and paying bills? ;-)"
DavidW says, "I've played Bobby and Bonnie. I started Enlightened Master, but I don't think it would work well as a group-played game."
DavidW says, "I'm partway through The Weight of a Soul."
DavidW says, "And I played Niney."
Genevieve says, "Oooh, Enlightened Master? That sounds cool. I'll have to check that one out some time."
DavidW says, "So I suggest we try A Fly on the Wall or left/right."
DavidW says (to Genevieve), "It is cool, but it's not quite the sort of game you'd expect from the title. Even though it really IS also that sort of game too."
Genevieve says, "My parents are going to be here shortly, so I don't think I'll have the chance even to be a fly on the wall for a Fly on the Wall, if you play that one. :-) I'll totally check out the transcript afterward though."
Jacqueline says, "I only have a couple of hours this morning, unfortunately."
DavidW says, "Bobby and Bonnie is a cute game. You play as a brother-sister team of bunny children."
Jacqueline says, "Left/Right wasn't Floydable, I don't think."
DavidW says, "oh."
Genevieve says, "Yes, I remember watching you guys play that for a bit and get exasperated by the limited command parser."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "load sleepmask st17aflyonthewall"

Floyd | In A Fly on the Wall, or An Appositional Eye, you're represented by
Floyd | Goldie, a Fortean Society member tasked with watching five (very
Floyd | high-definition) monitors that receive feeds from five paranormal
Floyd | hotspots in the Harrison Mansion. You begin in the Soul Dancers
Floyd | Ballroom where music is playing, and you're likely to hear other
Floyd | sounds throughout your vigil. However, this interpreter can't play the
Floyd | audio files. Only a small number of commands are needed to complete
Floyd | the game. Typical commands include X (or EXAMINE) [someone or
Floyd something] (e.g., x nun) and L (or LOOK), which describes your
Floyd surroundings. Conversation is handled with ASK [someone] ABOUT
Floyd [someone or something] or TALK TO [someone]. Sometimes the text will
Floyd | suggest actions that you can try. For example, you could try LISTEN TO
Floyd | MUSIC or LISTEN when music is playing.
Floyd |
Floyd | Unconventional commands are needed once Goldie settles in the Fly Eye.
Floyd | You can watch a room by typing its monitor number . Use LOOK (or L)
Floyd | to turn your attention to all the views, which will help you to decide
Floyd | what to watch next. To replay an event after it has played, type
Floyd | REPLAY. When you watch an event for the first time, ostensibly
Floyd | important events continue to play out in the other rooms, and you
Floyd | won't be able to see them. Fortunately, nothing of interest occurs on
Floyd | the monitors when you do something other than selecting a feed, such
Floyd | as examining or talking. COMMANDS shows many actions recognized by the
Floyd | game, and you should check them if you're unfamiliar with commands
Floyd | such as SAVE and UNDO. A hypertext version of A Fly on the Wall, or An
Floyd | Appositional Eye is available at
Floyd | [LINK], as is the original zcode
Floyd | version, A Fly on the Wall.
Floyd |
Floyd | Goldie won't usually offer comments about the on-screen events, but
Floyd | you can follow this thought process with THOUGHTS ON (they are off by
Floyd | default). Goldie will comment when an event is witnessed that is part
Floyd | of one of the storylines. THINK shows Goldie's current thought
Floyd | regardless of whether or not thoughts are activated and, if you're
Floyd | watching all of the monitors, it will hint at which monitor you might
Floyd | want to watch next. REMEMBER shows all the important events you've
Floyd witnessed, and REMEMBER [a room] shows significant events for a
Floyd | specific room (or person, if you specify one instead).

Floyd | The HELP command always displays this menu. Check out the Help Desk
Floyd | for general tips or the combinations to all three storylines. The
Floyd | staff here at the mansion wishes you a frightfully good evening.

Floyd | A green-skinned man with a stitch across his forehead lumbers toward
Floyd | you, two jumper cables swinging from his chest. Frankie bumps into
Floyd | Cleopatra standing next to the stage, sending her to the floor and
Floyd | knocking the headdress from her head. He extends his hand down to her,
Floyd | but she swats it away and glowers. Black Widow, a woman dressed in
Floyd | black with a red hourglass symbol on her back, picks up the headdress.
Floyd | Cleopatra snatches it back, stands, and returns to her spot beside the
Floyd | stage.
Floyd |
Floyd | Frankie stops in front of you. Are those batteries attached to
Floyd | opposite sides of his neck? you wonder. As Frankie speaks, his
Floyd | chin taps at the antenna protruding up from your forehead, and his
Floyd | breath suffocates your nose with alcohol. "Our whorey sister over
Floyd | there has sent me." He gestures erratically behind him. A nun with a
Floyd | hunched back bends over the punchbowl by the stage. You think he must
Floyd | have said "holy" sister, not "whorey."
Floyd |
Floyd | The nun straightens and turns around to face you. She rests her cup of
Floyd | punch on her pregnant belly.
Floyd |
Floyd | "She told me it's your turn in the Fly Eye, Goldie," Frankie says.
Floyd |
Floyd | Goldie? you wonder. My name isn't Goldie. Then you
Floyd | realize that, despite the alcoholic soup bathing his brain, Frankie
Floyd | connected your costume with the eponymous horror film, Goldie being a
Floyd | contraction of its star's surname, Goldblum.
Floyd |
Floyd | Frankie retreats toward Cleopatra. Arms crossed, she stands firm.
Floyd | Frankie stumbles away, passing Black Widow who, head cocked, watches
Floyd | Cleopatra.
Floyd |
Floyd | You glance at the double doors and consider making your exit to the
Floyd | Fly Eye, but the nun attracts your attention. She smiles and raises
Floyd | her cup in salute.

Floyd | The nun waves to you as you begin toward the hall outside. She strides
Floyd | off, targeting a man with spiky white hair and wearing a lab coat. The
Floyd | scientist takes a few steps back and stares at the floor.
Floyd |
Floyd | You head out the double doors, descend the stairs, and enter the small
Floyd | room nicknamed, for tonight, the Fly Eye.
Floyd |
Floyd | The wire frames of your wings bend as you gently lean back into the
Floyd | only chair in the room. The two floppy legs attached to your belt rise
Floyd | as you rest your hands on a table in front of a bank of monitors on
Floyd | the wall. The five screens receive signals from cameras in five
Floyd | different rooms in the mansion. Normally, these would be used for
Floyd | security, but tonight the Society is trying to record footage of the
Floyd | supernatural that will raise the eyebrows of even the most stone-faced
Floyd | skeptics. While you're hoping to witness such phenomena, following the
Floyd | exploits of any one of the costumed characters would probably be more
Floyd | interesting, after looking at the screens to decide which captures
Floyd | your attention.
Floyd |
Floyd | The only person you know well is Gregory Hoblett, dressed as the
Floyd | Russian mystic and healer Grigori Rasputin, in the Laboratory on
Floyd | monitor 3. Everybody in the Society likes Hoblett, unlike Grigori who
Floyd | survived a stabbing, possible cyanide poisoning, and two point blank
Floyd | gunshots, only to succumb after being shot twice in the back and
Floyd | beaten.
Floyd |
Floyd | The sasquatch chuckles quietly from the playroom on monitor 5, which
Floyd | is wired to record the electronic voice phenomena of ghostly children.

Floyd |

Floyd |
Floyd | The nun sips from her punch as you approach.
Floyd |
Floyd | "So, did you see anything good on your watch?" you say to the nun.
Floyd |
Floyd | She rests her cup on her belly. "I did hear some odd sounds out in the
Floyd | hall, but that's about it. But there's always something going on with
Floyd | this bunch." She gestures her cup at the guests. "I'd keep an eye on
Floyd | them, if I were you." She laughs.
Floyd |
Floyd | Most of the guests have congregated into small groups in which someone
Floyd | — or something — tries to talk over the music. Holographic dancers
Floyd | materialize momentarily to dip, spin, and swing their partners next to
Floyd | the corporeal partygoers before disappearing to continue their dance
Floyd | in the ethereal. You thought that Robin Hood was up on the stage, but
Floyd | the flute hanging from his neck suggests that instead he is the Pied
Floyd | Piper of Hamelin, playing his enchantment. Black Widow watches
Floyd | Cleopatra stand guard over a shadowed area next to the stage and
Floyd | uncomfortably close to a pair of stacked speakers. Cutlass in one
Floyd | wobbly hand, Frankie spars with an invisible foe as the pirate tries
Floyd | to get his weapon back. The nun smiles at you from the refreshment
Floyd | table along one wall. You suppose it may be time to make your exit and
Floyd | take your shift in the Fly Eye.

Floyd |
Floyd | Axe in hand, Rasputin continues to root around in the chest at a dark
Floyd | corner of the room. The medicine man leans his totem-laden staff onto
Floyd | the wall between the two of them. He taps a couple of dark bulbs
Floyd | surrounding the vanity's mirror. When they don't light, he tries
Floyd | tightening them into their sockets, but that doesn't work either. He
Floyd | gives up and studies himself in the mirror's reflection. He reaches
Floyd | into a pouch on his belt and applies more black makeup to his face.
Floyd |
Floyd | Rasputin stands, turns, and kicks over the staff. Animal figurines
Floyd | spill onto the floor. He drops the axe and begins to gather them up.
Floyd |
Floyd | Watching Rasputin, the medicine man retrieves his staff. He scowls as
Floyd | Rasputin, on his knees and talking constantly, polishes each totem
Floyd | before looping them onto their former holder. A raven settles down the
Floyd | staff first, followed by an owl, frog, and wolf.
Floyd |
