ClubFloyd Transcript:
Dreamland Revised by EpicNightmare
As played on ifMUD on March 13, 2016

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Dreamland Revised written by EpicNightmare. It was part of the Imaginary Games from Imaginary Universes Game Jam. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting Renga in Blue.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Jacqueline says, "So hey, good job on Sherlock last week, you two."
Teaspoon says, "David has been heroically sorting through the Imaginary Games jam and finding out that they are mostly not Floyd-playable"
Teaspoon exclaims, "thanks!"
Jacqueline says, "I can do the download/upload, if you want, David, so it doesn't eat your bandwidth."
DavidW says, "Dreamland Revised is the only viable game in this batch I've found so far."
Jacqueline says, "Well, let's play it."
Jacqueline says, "I'm in for something short and game jammy today, I think."
Teaspoon says, "Sounds like a plan"
DavidW says, "The blurb for Dreamland is bizarre in its own way too."
Jacqueline asks, "hm?"
Teaspoon says, "I wonder whether we are actually going to be playing that game. The comp rules said it could be a *sequel* to the described game."
Teaspoon says, "or remix, or etcetera"
DavidW says, "The blurb is a bit long to cut-n-paste here without warning."
Jacqueline asks, "Pastebin?"

Jacqueline says, "huh"
DavidW says, "It's gonna be weird whichever game we play."
Teaspoon says, "quite"
Jacqueline asks, "So, do you need me to install it, DW, or had you already downloaded it?"
DavidW says, "I've downloaded it on my machine. I haven't put it on Floyd yet."
says, "gimme a sec to give it to Floyd."
DavidW says, "okay, it's loaded as 'dreamland'."
Teaspoon says, "thanks"
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "load sleepmask dreamland"

Floyd | > DESCRIBE GAME
Floyd |
Floyd | Hi, I'm EpicNightmare. If you're at my cloud, you know that already,
Floyd | but it's tripped all over AIXeddit now and I have no idea who's
Floyd | running it, so. (Enabled updates are the best.)
Floyd |
Floyd | If you haven't played Dreamland (by Wonderland's Alice) you should
Floyd | play it before playing this. I think Dreamland Revised is great,
Floyd | because I did the best I could, but it's also crammed full of
Floyd | spoilers.
Floyd |
Floyd | Here's my original review.
Floyd |
Floyd | ----------------------
Floyd | Dreamland (Wonderland's Alice)
Floyd | This is some new VR/AR thing I looked at last month. The gimmick is
Floyd | it's a game that you play in your dreams. I found the concept
Floyd | intriguing, so I hooked up the ol" REM Enhancer and downloaded the
Floyd | game's app to it. At first, I couldn't tell if the game was working
Floyd | (REME and other dreamtechs can be pretty buggy), but a few days in, I
Floyd | started having the trippiest dreams. A woman, dressed all in white
Floyd | with no eyes, asks me if I have visited the "Quartzian Palace". Far
Floyd | off in the distance, I see a castle that glows in many colors, but the
Floyd | way there always seems to be blocked by a chasm. Over many nights I
Floyd | struggled to find a way there, sometimes through bizarre dangers,
Floyd | often through places of great and strange beauty, until one night, I
Floyd | finally managed to find a way into the palaceā€¦
Floyd |
Floyd | Aaaand it turns out the ending is some serious "Don't forget to drink
Floyd | your Ovaltine!" bullshit. Like, seriously. Watch it on Youtube if you
Floyd | don't believe me. It's such a shame, because the game was so cool up
Floyd | to that, but I honestly cannot recommend this game in good conscience
Floyd | thanks to that ending.
Floyd |
Floyd | I deleted the app off my REME the next day. I'm still getting ads in
Floyd | my sleep. Goddammit.
Floyd | ----------------------
Floyd |
Floyd | So what you want to do is get across the chasm and STOP THERE. Do NOT
Floyd | use your Visage to pass the portcullis, do NOT go into the Quartzian
Floyd | Palace, that's what trips off the ads. Believe me you do not want that
Floyd | shit. Come back and play the REAL ending here.
Floyd |
Floyd | If you don't know how to work this game, key HELP ME.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Teaspoon says, "whoa"
Teaspoon says (to Floyd), "help me"
Floyd ] End-World
Floyd | >
Floyd | > HELP ME
Floyd |
Floyd | Okay, you've never played a game like this. Neither had I. They are
Floyd | completely fucking weird, so don't feel bad.
Floyd |
Floyd | The big problem I had when I was making this game is that Dreamland
Floyd | was a fully enabled system and this isn't.
Floyd |
Floyd | The way this is supposed to work is that you key what you
Floyd | want to do, and then the game does it. But Inform 7 is from 2020, so
Floyd | instead of understanding English, it has a list of verbs and a list of
Floyd | nouns and it pairs them off in grammar structures. Like this:
Floyd |
Floyd | EXAMINE (something) <-- look at whatever-it-is
Floyd | TAKE (something) <-- pick something up
Floyd | PUT (something) IN (something) <-- you get the idea by now, right?
Floyd |
Floyd | Whoever made this system made some really weird decisions. For
Floyd | example, the built-in input to find out what you're carrying was
Floyd | INVENTORY, but that isn't even a verb. I made it so you can key WHAT
Floyd | DO I HAVE instead, because that makes a lot more sense.
Floyd |
Floyd | The built-in input to walk around is with compass directions, like
Floyd | NORTH SOUTH EAST etc etc. First off, this bears no relation to how
Floyd | people walk around in real life, and second off, it's not like
Floyd | Dreamland had a stable compass. I put in a thing so you can just key
Floyd | GO (wherever) and go where you want to go. GO only works when you're
Floyd | right near where you want to go, so don't try to teleport around the
Floyd | map that way.
Floyd |
Floyd | The worst part of this was figuring out how to convert enabled stuff
Floyd | into this system. Example, we all know how to change the Visage from
Floyd | state to state. But how do you describe that in just one verb? And
Floyd | there are like forty different names for the different states,
Floyd | depending on whose cloud you hit. I went with ASSUME VISAGE and
Floyd | Depardu's emotive list, like ASSUME DETERMINED VISAGE, but you can use
Floyd | the Allis creature list instead if you want. Key SHOW LIST if you need
Floyd | a reminder.
Floyd |
Floyd | There aren't any puzzles here, so if you paid attention when you
Floyd | played the original, you shouldn't have any trouble. If you played it
Floyd | too long ago and your memory is flaky, key REMIND ME for a reminder.
Floyd | If you can't figure out the right input, key WHAT DO I DO NEXT to get
Floyd | the next command (or just NEXT, I made it easy.)
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Teaspoon asks, "everyone read that?"
DavidW says, "I have now. That's a lot to take in."
Teaspoon says, "There's some terrific worldbuilding here"
